MacBook doesn't go into standby mode as it should?

I recently set the standby delay on my MacBook to 600 (seconds) thinking that would cause it to go into standby/hibernation after 10 minutes of sleep. However, when I open the lid after several hours of sleep, I find that the "lag time" before I can enter my password that I have previously noted and interpreted as a sign of the system coming out of standby is not there. Also, when i use "pmset -g log" to view the power logs, there's no indication that the system goes into standby mode after the set standby delay. Here is an excerpt from the logs:

Shouldn't there be a log entry somewhere around 1:44:29 (i.e. after 600 seconds of sleep) indicating that the system is going into standby? As can be seen from the log, the battery drops from 88% to 82% during this 8 hour period. As far as I can understand, standby mode is equivalent to Windows "hibernation", where the contents of the RAM is stored on the drive, meaning the computer uses no power during standby. So why isn't standbydelay 600 working as I expect it to?

Update: Uninstalling Avast didn't seem to help. I've also set "autopoweroffdelay" to 600 and "autopoweroff" to 1, no effect. I closed the lid 7 hours ago, computer was still in sleep mode when I opened the lid (nothing connected to it)
So far, setting "hibernatemode" to 25 is the only thing that actually puts my computer into standby/hibernation, although it does that straightaway. I've set hibernatemode 3 for AC power and hibernate mode 25 for battery.
So much for Macs' "just working", the guy who came up with that clearly never owned a Mac... at least not for some time.

    Remove "Boom" and test.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't go in standby mode...

    Hi!
I just got my new MacBook Pro and everything works fine but it just won't go into standby mode. I tried to quit every app and to disconnect all devices but it still won't work. The displays turns off but the hard drive keeps working and the indicator light is on.
If I close the lid it works without any problem.
What could be the problem and how do I solve this problem?

Doesn't it seem that with so many reporting this as a problem that it's more than just an isolated hardware situation for c0heed?
It's hard to tell. That's why I suggested the reinstall to try and eliminate a software issue.
There are all kinds of things that can cause sleep issues with a Mac. Sometimes when I close the lid on my MBP, I can't get it to wake back up and have to force quit it. It's very intermittent and there are no clues in the logs either to the cause.

  • My new macbook pro retina randomly goes into standby mode

My new macbook pro retina randomly goes into standby mode. I have to close the screen and wait a few seconds and re-open it in order for it to come back on.
Sometimes it immediately goes back into standby mode again after closing and reopening the screen. I have checked the battery level everytime, and it has never been below 40% when this occurs. Is this a Mountain Lion issue?

    Well I fixed my problem.
I took it into the Apple store. Even without the other two monitors they were able to recreate the problem. One symptom (I had) was that one of the Hot Corners was set to Disable screen saver. If you then put your cursor there, you'd go into screen saver mode. Change the setting to another corner and the problem follows you there.
The Apple person at the Genius bar logged out as me and back in as test and same problem. He tried some stuff and finally said I needed to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS (Lion). I'd only had the machine for 12 hours and had just migrated my data to it, so I didn't mind doing that. I did it at home.
    Problem solved.
BUT... then I reinstalled the driver for my EVGA UV Plus 19 (most current drivers) and bingo problem back. Uninstall. Problem gone. I'm now using mini display port to DVI for one monitor and HDMI for the other I think the machine is a bit warmer this way (versus using a USB to the EVGA device) but at least it's not sleeping all the time. Someone might say "it (the heat) is your imagination" or something else. Or someone might say "use the other thunderbolt port for another mini-display port to DVI" but I need that for the LAN... c'est la vie.
Maybe I'll write to evga and see what they say. Maybe they'll fix their driver and/or Apple will fix it.

My iPhone turns off whenever it goes into standby mode and has to be turned back on to work

That's normal behavior. It turns off automatically in order to preserve the battery. Pushing the On/Off button turns it on immediately. This also requires entering the passcode and prevents the phone from being accessed by anyone but you.

    Hello Quentin,
It might be worth attempting a restart of the iPad, and then a reset, should restarting fail to resolve the issue.

  • ITouch doesn't go into sleep mode

I have noticed recently that my iTouch doesn't go into sleep mode. Usually the screen will go dark after a couple of minutes if it is not being used. This isn't the case. When I plug it in to charge, it doesn't go into sleep mode either. I have tried to reset with the top and home button and that hasn't worked. Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?

    Hey SFJenn,
    Make sure Auto-Lock is set in Settings> General> Auto-Lock.
If it is but you still see the issue, try resetting and/or restoring the iPhone.

  • IPad doesn't go into sleep mode when guided access is enabled

My iPad doesn't go into sleep mode when guided access is enabled despite having set "enable sleep mode" to on in the settings menu.  COnsequently, my battery life drains very quickly during the day as the screen doesn't dim or go into sleep mode at all.  Help!

Seems this feature is lost with iOS 7.0.4.  I just bought 4 iPod Touches for employee use and NEED to have sleep mode enabled for guided access to conserve battery life.
I did have 1 iPod that allowed me to enable sleep mode (and I tested that it allowed the top button to be pressed to immediately go to sleep), then after it ran the 7.0.4 upgrade it no longer allowed sleep mode when in guided access (I did not check the original version of iOS on the iPod but it was obviously older than 7.0.4).
Is there some new hidden way to turn this on or did Apple delete the option?

  • External screen doesn't go into standby when putting MacBook Pro into sleep

I'm using a new MacBook Pro with an external monitor (DELL P2411H) through a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter.
When putting the Macbook into sleepmode, the external screen goes into standby but immediately wakes up, then goes back into standby and wakes up ... this cycle doesn't stop. The only option is to manually push the powerbutton on the display.
I'm having this issue too when using a MacBook Pro 13", so it's not a single issue.

I got similar Problem, my external monitor will go to standby mode and then switch on immediately, and the go to sleep , and the monitor will show no signal detect

  • MacBook Pro doesn't go into sleep mode after connecting Thunderbolt display

    Hi,
after connecting a Thunderbolt display to the 2011 MacBook Pro 13", the system doesn't stay in sleep mode.
When pressing cmd.alt.eject it goes into sleep for 1 or 2 seconds and then goes back on.
everything works fine otherwise and the MacBook goes to sleep without problems if the Thunderbolt display is not attached.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jordi

    I found the problem.
It turns out that it has nothing to do with the Thunderbolt Display, but with Bluetooth and the Magic Trackpad.
When I installed the TD, I also added a wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad that I had been using with another system.
If the option to allow the system to wake up by Bluetooth devices is enabled (system preferences, Bluetooth, advanced), the MacBook Pro will go to sleep and immediately wake up.
Simply disabled that option and everything works fine.
Now I need to open the lid of the MBP to wake up the system. Kind of a huge power button :-)
    Thanks for your help!

  • IPod classic won't sync, doesn't go into disk mode what do I do next?

Here we go, another iPod classic problem.  A few days ago I noticed a lag while going through my artists list.  Went home, tried to sync, iTunes said I had a corrupted file please restore.  Not the first time this has happened so I thought it would be an easy fix.  Nope.  Restore didn't happen.  Now my classic doesn't turn on unless plugged in to my PC.   Went through the motions for everything Apple reccomends, nothing.  The screen looks like it's in disk mode, but doesn't say disk mode on it.  It won't go into disk mode, so I can't reformat it on Win 7.  Shows up in windows as removeable drive but does not show up in iTunes so I can't change settings or do another restore.

Main Issue: Short; in disk mode all I get is a screen that says "Okay to disconnect" with a check mark
In Disc mode, yes that is all you see on the Ipod Screen, as the iPod becomes an external hardisk and not a media player with Menu. I's main function is to store files to/from the Mac.
Hard reset (using the menu and middle buttons
Reset the iPod - you ust press the Menu and center button for about 10 secs till the logo comes ON.
I need to be able to put in disc mode to at least run diagnostics on it and can't even do that.
If you want to go into disk Diagnostic, read  this excellent post from tt2.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17028567#17028567
Today, the ipod is not even being recognized by the computer to say that it's there. There is no "connecting" screen, not even a charging symbol.
*Exception: It will charge when hooked up to a charger in an outlet which leads me to believe it's a software issue in the ipod.
You can try all the above, but you should know that when connecting the iPod to a Mac, do not use the Keyboard USB port, or any USB Hub. if you are using a Macbook Pro, only one USB port can be use for the iPod, the other one is not a high Power USB 2.0 port, which shared the Internal bus with iSight and other IO devices like Mouse, infraRed, Bluetooth etc.
So take a look at your Mac user manual and see which USB port to use.
    Have a nice day!

  • HT202124 Is plug in a USB wireless receiver (Logitech Unifying Receiver) prevents Macbook Pro Retina going to standby mode?

As the title implies, is this prevent Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2014) from going to standby mode? It's not convenience to unplug the wireless receiver every time I don't use the notebook though.

That kind of panic can be caused by an adapter for an external display that isn't connected to anything. See this thread.
There are also reports that the panic may be triggered by waking an external display from sleep. To test that theory, open the Energy Saver preference pane and click the lock icon to unlock the settings, if necessary. Move the Display sleep slider all the way to the Never position on the right. See whether there's any change.
