MacBook doesn't recover from Save to disk/RAM

Recently discovered I have an issue with my MacBook Pro 15" Early 2011: When it turns itself complete off due to low battery, it saves everything to RAM (or disk?). However, if I reattach power and try to resume, it starts up, shows the progress bar in the bottom, but only lights up the first one or two bars and then stops working completely. I've waited for several hours the first time, but it just stopped. Closing the lid and reopening will switch of the display, but otherwise have no impact. The power LED will light up if closed, will otherwise be off. Restarting it by pressing the power button (hard reset) gets it to work again, and Lion boots with my recently opened programs as well (even though I specified it shouldn't do that).
Normal sleep mode, putting the MBP to sleep and resuming by closing/opening the lid, works fine! (As long as the battery is charged).
I swapped the HDD for an SSD a while ago (Corsair Force GT, not Apple) and upgraded the RAM to 8GB. Not sure whether the issue occoured previously or not, but am not experiencing any issues with the system otherwise.
Running Lion, 10.7.1.

If http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) does not work, take your MBP to your local AS or an AASP for FREE diagnostic testing.

  • Lion OSX major network issue with MacBook but cannot restore from Snow Leopard disk - help!

I have a network with an airport extreme with two expresses and a time capsule extending the network.  The network has a Mac, apple TV and two iphones which all connect absolutely fine.  The macbook did too, until I upgraded to 7.6.1 on the airports.  I took the airports back to 7.6 but the Mac simply isn't speaking properly to my extreme.  It drops, speeds up, slows down and works differently in different part of the house.
Been to Genius who said, macbook is fine, try either a completely fresh install on the mac, or reset the network.  The reset of the network hasn't worked, so I wanted to reinstall snow leopard then lion on my mac.  Put the disk in, and it came up with the error can't install the Mac OSX from the install Mac OSX disc.  I have therefore tried the original leopard disks, which simply restart, chime and restart (continuously).
I need some help as this is my work computer and I don't seem to be able to get any help from anyone.
So I need to know the following:
    1) Has anyone got any other solutions for the extreme problem (have tried dragging out the preferences but that didn't work either);
    2) How do you reinstall an OS from the disk - as this in particular is a nightmare.
    3) Anyone able to suggest a work round??
Would be very grateful for assistance.
    Thanks

Hello ddownn and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Firstly it will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. That would include the OS and particulars about the Mac Pro.
"this system doesn't beep three times."
The normal diagnosis for that is RAM problems.
"I am able to complete the installation by using the DVD in my Mac Pro in Target Disk Mode with a FireWire cable"
But that shouldn't work because the install (build) would be particular to the Mac Pro.
"I recently installed a new HDD and formatted it from a Mac Pro via Target Disk Mode."
    Partitioned to GUID?
"disk spins up and stops about three times, then ejects and a folder icon with a question mark appears"
These DVD drives in these old laptops can often go bad. Try this:

  • Migration Assistant- Recovering from a hard disk failure

    Was running on OS X 10.8.5 on MBP 8,3 (2011 17")
Many issues with slowness, and software, and then boom, the hard disk failed.
No software recovery worked.  Drive has been shipped for physical recovery.
I did not use migration assistant to set up the new hard disk.  Not going to live with migrated issues like the last 2 years….
I have a 3 month old backup that has most of my static data.  It's a bootable clone running on a Lacie Thunderbolt external.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Installed new SSD
    2. Formatted new SSD, installed Yosemite 10.10.1
    3. Did fresh installs of Adobe Creative Cloud Apps, Bought new Extensis Suitcase 6, reinstalled Office 2011
    4. Reset up the email boxes from scratch (some issues- so did not want to migrate)
    5. Imported HTML bookmarks from old Safari.
Now, I thought I would get the easy part…. run Migration assistant to selectively bring over about 500gb of desktop files, docs, photos and music.
It won't work. It forces me to create a new user on the machine.
How do I work around this to get the permissions changed and moved to the new machine/account?

I thought I would mention the issues with Third Party SSD and Yosemite:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2849366/mac-wont-boot-about-yosemite-and-your-th ird-party-ssd.html

    Hi mariocedeno,
Let's try resetting the SMC and see if anything changes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
If that does not resolve the issue, the next scenario would be to try a different charger and battery to see if anything changes. Based on the information provided in System Profiler it's not immediately obvious if we're dealing with a battery, charger or CPU related issue that's causing this.
If you don't have access to another charger & battery, our next best course of action is to arrange service/diagnostics via an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider. Is the unit still covered by Applecare/one-year limited warranty?

  • Macbook doesn't wakeup from sleep

    Hey gang!
I am a new Windows-Mac convert and I couldn't be happier about my decision. I bought a beautiful black Macbook on July 23rd and I was in love with everything about this machine until the first week of August. I put my Macbook to sleep with the lid closed for about an hour and when I went to open the lid it made a brief noise like always and then the monitor flickered and went black. The sleep light went off and the hard drive was spinning but the monitor didn't come on. A few days later I turned it off completely and then when I went to turn it back on it wouldn't start without me pressing down the power button for a few seconds. Then I was on and working away like nothing happened.
I read all the posts I could find on these forums and followed all of your advice which was: 1. Reset PRAM 2. Reset PMU 3. Take it to the Apple Genius Bar and see what they say and 4. Call Apple Care.
Resetting the PRAM did nothing, resetting the PMU also did nothing. I took it to the Genius Bar and showed the guy there what the problem was. I made sure that I let my Macbook sleep with the lid closed for over an hour so he could see exactly what it was doing. He said, "it looks like it's dead." He got it started, changed my power setting to not put the hard drive to sleep when possible and asked me to try and replicate the problem so he could see if that fixed it. The problem is that I would have had to wait an hour or so to see if that fixed it and I couldn't wait. So, I went home thinking it may be fixed and it wasn't. It did the same thing when waking up. The guy at the Genius Bar also told me he ran diagnostics and that nothing was wrong and that he never heard of this problem before.
Ok, so I called Amazon (where I bought it) and told them I had a DOA and they said they'd send a UPS guy to come get it this week and give me a new one.
Sorry for the long post but it's almost done.
My question to all of you is this:
I reinstalled the OS doing a clean install which deleted the Hard Drive and downloaded the various updates and since yesterday I have not had the problem again. I even let it sleep with the lid closed all night and in the morning it woke up PERFECTLY. I called Apple Care and they said since that worked it probably was a software problem and not a hardware and most likely will not reappear. But I have read here that this MIGHT be a reccurent problem and some people have had the problem loads of times. The fixes only help for a short period of time.
So, do I still send it back for a new one and maybe encounter the same problem, or do I keep it for another few days and test it out some more and maybe risk not being able to return it to Amazon?
My 30 warranty is up on the 23rd of this month so I do have 2 more weeks to test. I thought some of you might have had this problem and fixed it with a simple re-install of the OS. If any of you have permanently fixed this please let me know how.
Again, sorry for the huge post but I wanted everyone to have all the information and for people searching for this topic in the future to also have all the info.
Thanks for the help in advance!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I didn't get any response to this question which is ok, but I wanted to give everyone an update so that if anyone has this problem they have at least one solution.
I decided to send my Macbook back to Amazon last week. I printed a UPS return slip from Amazon's website and they paid for it to be sent back to them. As soon as UPS confirmed that they sent my Macbook back they overnighted me a new one. The new one has been working perfectly for a few days now. I have put it to sleep overnight and it woke up without a hitch. Hopefully this problem doesn't come up on the new one.
The point is, if any of you have a product that doesn't work exactly the way it should, SEND IT BACK! No other company on Earth expects you to "DEAL" with broken products and it shouldn't be this way with Apple. I strongly suggest purchasing your products from Amazon, especially after this experience. They didn't even test the computer to see if it was broken, they just gave me a new one.

  • Macbook won't boot from install disks

I have tried to boot my sisters macbook the other day from her install disks so I could use disk utility to repair her disks (I think there is a problem with the block count) so I inserted the CD and held 'C' on startup and I got to the grey screen for about 10 seconds but then the computer went black, chimed again and gave me the same screen and kept repeating until I let go of 'C' where it booted from the hard drive. The problem is not the CD as I tried to boot from another leopard install disk. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Reboot holding down the shift key until you see the spinning cog. When the desktop finally appears (it will take a good while) launch DU and Repair Disk. Then empty the Trash. Then reboot. Then try again to boot from the (correct) OS installer DVD (not a CD).

  • Data Recovery from crashed Hard Disk

    Hi,
My HP Pavilion Laptop's internal Hard Disk (Seagate) has crashed Suddenly and it is not getting detected by system.
This hard disk contains some of my important documents which I want to recover. When I contacted a service center, I was told that it can be recovered by some expert professionals but that is a bit costly affair.
Can anyone suggest, how the data can be recovered from the hard disk.?
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Regards,
    Rajeev

If your hard drive is spinning then using an effective data recovery software you can do recover your data yourself. I would advice you to try Kernel for Windows Data Recovery Software to recover your data from Windows file system.

  • MBP not recovering from sleep

I updated to Mavericks almost one month ago the day it was released and now my mbp doesn't recover from sleep mode, I have to force shut it down and when I turn it on again firevault says that I'm already logged in and I return to the session, like if it wasn't even shut down. This used to happen when I bought for the first time this mac and got the screen replaced and the problem was solved but now it has returned.
    Basic specs:
    OSX 10.9
    MBP Late 2011
    2.4 Core i5
    8gb ram 1333mhz ddr3
    What should I do?

I'm trying this, it was posted on another thread by e.MinaTTi and seems to be working.
    Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
run pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
If you see "hibernatemode     3", you may go on the process, or else you need tostop and try other solution
    run sudo pmset hibernatemode 0

  • Macbook Pro doesn't start from internal disk. How to?

    Hi.
My Macbook doesn't startup. I tried to repair it but it isn't possible and now I need to do one last backup copy before format it. But it doesn't pass from the grey apple screen.
I've checked the S.M.A.R.T. and it is OK. What else can I do to start from the internal disk on last time?
    Thanks.
    Best regards,
    Telmo

Hi. Yes, I did. It goes on and on with the grey apple screen.
I just need it to boot one last time to save one Word document that I didn't had the chance to backup.
The internal disk appears on the disk utility when I star from the install disk and I select it to boot but when restart nothing happens.

  • When I turn my MacBook Pro on, the white apple screen shows up with loading circle, but doesn't go from this screen. Why?

It's just a white screen with the apple logo. It doesn't move from this screen regardless of how long it's on. The charger is showing a green light. It was amber before I let it fully charge. I've tried turning it on with and without it plugged in. I hear the hard drive start up when I turn it on. And the caps lock light turns on when I hit it. Any suggestions? Help please.

Start your MBP holding the OPTION key.  This should show two HDD icons.  Select the one on the right, the RECOVER icon.  This should display a four option menu.  Select Disk Utility and repair the disk.
If no success, the the only other avenue is is a reinstall of the OS.
    Ciao.

  • Recovering from a disk crash

i experienced a hard disk failure on my MacBook Pro today. at first Safari started complaining it's unable to save bookmarks, then Mail gave errors about not being able to write data. i tried logging out and logging in again with the same account but i got this error:
'You are unable to log in to the user account "aspa" at this time.'
i then logged in as another user and tried to mount user aspa's home directory disk image (which used FileVault). the mount operation failed with the following message:
"The following disk images failed to mount
    aspa.sparseimage corrupt image"
rebooting didn't help either so i booted the system from the installation DVD disc and tried running verify and repair in Disk Utility but both operations failed. verify failed with this message:
    "Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume
    Invalid record count
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: Then underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
repair operation failed with similar errors. i then booted the system in single-user mode and tried running 'fsck -fy' which again failed:
    "** /dev/rdisk0s2
    ** Root file system
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid record count
    (3,1)
    ** Volume check failed"
i started the disk in FireWire target mode and tried copying files from the failed disk to another machine but copying failed:
tar: /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/Applications/...: Read error at byte 17832448, reading 10240 bytes: Bad file descriptor
trying to copy the user's home directory disk image resulted in similar errors.
it appears that there was some sort of error with the root file system which then made the sparseimage brake. i was advised by Apple support to reinstall the operating system which i'm now doing.
the operating system installation took quite a while but it seems to have gone fine. still, i'd like to get some assurance that this problem was not due to a hardware fault. i've run Apple Hardware test which didn't report any errors. are there any good test programs which would test the hard disk for failures? any ideas on whether this was caused by a software or hardware problem?
if i remember correctly, before the re-installation the disk was split into two partitions. i deleted all the partitions prior to the installation to make sure that everything will be wiped out. the installation program didn't re-create the other partition. what is this partition used for? should i recreate it and re-install?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

5 days after I had recieved my mbp, my harddrive failed as well. I did try to reinstall the OS but with no luck. At some point during installation, it would stop telling me to try again. So I took it to the nearest technical service center and they confirmed the hd-failure and replaced it. this was the 80gig @ 5200rpm. but since you were able to reinstall the OS again, you should be fine. have you run the diskutility again?

    regards,
    rik

    Rik,
Please reread my first post carefully & make sure you follow its instructions closely. The "Repair Disk" step (not the verify one) should be run while your Mac is started up from the install disk, then the "Repair Permissions" step should be run after you have restarted normally.
Some background info that may be helpful:
Disk Utility (& all such disk utilities) must temporarily "unmount" a disk to affect a repair of its file system (which is what the "Repair Disk" step does). Unmounting a disk makes it unavailable for normal use. The disk containing the operating system that is currently running the computer (the startup disk) cannot be unmounted. This is why the "Repair Disk" button is grayed out if you run Disk Utility with your startup disk as its target.
Repairing permissions does not require unmounting the disk but it does require a healthy file system, which is why the disk repair must precede it. Apple recommends repairing permissions on the start up disk while booted from it, which is why it should be done after restarting normally.
The verify steps do not actually repair anything. They just run the checks that the repair steps run to determine if any repairs are needed & report the results of those checks.
The routine that repairs permissions is part of the OS itself. Disk Utility, Onyx, & all other such utilities that repair permissions actually just tell the OS to perform this routine. Thus, it doesn't matter which one you use to do this repair, nor is one utility any better than another at doing this. So if you prefer, after restarting after doing the disk repair from the install disk you can do the permissions repair with Onyx.

  • Recovering keychain and application liscense keys from a crashed disk

My OS X partition is too corrupted to boot from or repair with disk utility. I have a windows bootcamp partion that I can boot from and the files on the OS X partion can be read from windows and copied to an external hard disk (NTFS if it makes a difference) but it's very slow to copy large amounts of data (as in days for the application folder).  I'd like to recover both my keychain and whatever liscense keys are used to tell applications that I own them.
    My plan is to
copy everything important. Including what I put above
    Reformat the OS X partition
    Reinstall Snow Leopard
transfer Keychain information from back up disk
tranfer liscense information files if they exist
    reinstall Applications
I'm not sure where the liscense information is stored or if the Keychains file and folder will actually work like this and if I'll have access.
I can try and copy important applications directly but windows doesn't recognize them as applications so I'm not sure if I'll be missing important information when I try and transfer them back.
Is this a very bad idea and should I just have a professional try and fix this?
    Thanks

  • How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?

    Hi,
How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?
I have a Time Machine disk (A) including the backups of several different Macs (B, C, D & E) generated with an old Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac PowerPC) over the years.
I have transferred the old Mac contents to a new Mac with OS X 10.8.3 using Migration Assitant. All OK.
Now, I want to erase such TM disk A to use if for other purposes, but first, I would like to RECOVER the backups of some Macs inside it (D and E). Is that possible WITHOUT formatting the destination disk and selecting only some Macs from the TM disk and not the fulll TM disk? How?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that is messy, anway. I simply used the same external disk as Time Machine disk for different Macs. And that worked OK all the time for years.
The ExternalTimeMachineDisk contains the folder Backups.backupdb
which contains the following folders (each one corresponding to the Time Machine backup made from each Mac):
    Mac1
    Mac2
    MacBook1
    MacBook2
In relation to my message above, is it possible to select specific files, folders or full Mac backups from such Time Machine disk and save them to other disk? How?
    Thanks.
