MacBook drank some of my Starbucks!

I spilled a small amount of coffee on the left side of my Macbook. I removed the battery and let it dry for a day. Now, it boots up fine, and displays the login screen.
However, some keys don't work at all, and some incorrectly. Thus, I am unable to enter my password to login to my user account. I am, however, able to get into the Guest Account. Except for the keyboard, everything else appears to be functioning fine.
Is there anything I can do before I take it in to Apple Store?
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.

Not without doing more damage. It needs to be cleaned to get rid of the residue from the coffee. There may be a chance the keyboard has to be replaced.

By the way, I have tried shutting of the display switching in the power settings.  That was basically the only real answer I found anywhere.  It didn't work.

  • MacBook Air and wifi at Starbucks

I went to the local Starbucks cafe in Seoul as I usually do. I have connected to the internet many times in the past without any problem at Starbucks. I use the wireless connection. I just find the provider with the strongest connection and I type the name in and it connects straightaway.
Today, I had some trouble. I enquired at the counter and the guy gave me a brochure. It said that there was a new system in place. It was a wifi connection. It said that I just type in google and it will take me to their page and there is a free internet connection option with Google. I think Starbucks and Google partnered to do this. It said once I got that done, I need to put in my social security number etc.
But the problem is I couldn't get the Google page to come up.
When I tried to connect using the older method, I managed to get the homepage (Yahoo!) to come up but any other pages would take a long time to load and some would not load even after an hour. I could just see the header and none of the information on the webpage below it.
So my question is: does this MacBook Air (1.86 GHz) 120GB that I bought 2 months ago have wifi? Or do I need to get something else - like a USB modem or something like that?
I do not understand what wifi is exactly.
At home, I have a wireless connection with the internet provider I have.
If I have the wifi built in, how come I can't connect to the internet at Starbucks well, and I can't get that google page to come up?

BEWARE... Never. let me say NEVER GIVE YOUR SS# to log in for free wifi. You may have just had your identity stolen. That is a way of getting your id and they could have hacked your computer and had all your personal info off your computer too. All of your personal info (name, address ect) are all on your computer and you may have gave them the only other thing needed to completely steal your Identity. I have heard of this happening in hotels that have wifi in them. Others will set up a wireless access in a room nearby and steal identities of the hotel guest and have them cleaned out before they even get home.

  • Converting from a PC to a Macbook Pro - some questions

Hey guys. I'm a long-time PC user who has finally given up on PCs and am very seriously considering buying the Macbook Pro 15-inch.
I'm relatively clueless about Mac issues and especially about transferring my data from PC to Macs, so I would appreciate some help on the following:
    1) How do I transfer my files from my current hard drive to a Mac? Is there some sort of wizard that can sort my data for me?
I have a hard drive with years of documents, software, old backups; and I understand that I can bascially plug and play via USB. However I have absolutely no clue what files should goes to which locations on a Mac.
    2) Should I bother getting the discrete graphics version?
I do some products/marketing graphics design on Adobe CS3 on my PC, and some light gaming (mostly RPGs, no heavy-duter shooters like Crysis etc). I'm wondering if the integrated graphics version is enough for me.
    3) Lastly, are there common issues with the Macbook Pro 15" I should know about?
    Thanks for the help

Hello, One thing you may want to consider is how to view all your years of documents from your PC. Apple offers iWork and uses apps Pages (word processing) and Numbers (spreadsheet), and Keynote (presentations).
You can open your Office docs with iWork but for me, I found iWork difficult to use.
There is also Open Office (openoffice.org). I do not have much experience with this but have used it a few times to open Word docs. I haven't used it to create any docs though...
Finally there is Office for Mac. I've just recently purchased this and there are some differences from MS Office...I'm still finding them so can't give a lot of detail here..
I switched back to Mac in 06 and have been very happy. You may have already done this but go into an Apple store and play around with one. This will help you understand where to move your PC files. Or as mentioned, the Apple store will do this for you.
Then there is this forum. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable people here.
    Good Luck!

  • Macbook Pro – Some Keys Not Working!

    Hi
    I'm running a 15-inch ( mid 2010 ) Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8.5.
Some of my keys have stopped working.
I've been throughout his forum but found nothing that helps.
The 't' key sometimes does nothing and sometimes this... IORTUY
other keys that dont work are: number 5, hypens, square brackets and volume up.
    Random I know.
    Anyone experienced this?
    Thanks
    B

    I'm on a MacBookPro8,2,
    Intel Core i7 2.3 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
    SMC Version (system):          1.69f4
    OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
I have the same issue with some of my keys, it comes and goes, but it's mostly there.
I have to carry a small Bluetooth keyboard with me now, this really *****.
I'm paranoid thinking this might have something to do with a keylogger process, or maybe just some process in the system that keeps taking all the IO bandwidth for the keyboard, I don't think it's hardware related
I've installed an antivirus and performed an exhaustive scan and found nothing wrong.
When I started typing this post I had to go and get the external keyboard, now I'm typing back again with the keyboard, no clue what might be causing it.

  • Right after upgrading to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro, some websites on Firefox won't load videos and some look like html (or something like that).

I've used Firefox for a while on my MacBook Pro (about 1.5 years old) and it's worked great. Should be fully updated too. Immediately after I upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion, some websites wouldn't load correctly (looked like html or something). Also some websites like YouTube show video fine, but then at least one other website doesn't show the video window at all, much less play it. Safari doesn't have that problem. Any ideas?

Did you try turning off power nap?

  • Bookmarks don't display correctly on a 13" MacBook Pro, some subfolders won't expand, Anybody have this issue? Thank you!

    I am using a 13" MacBook Pro, Mid-2012 with OS 10.9.3.
A while back I created some sub-folders in several bookmark headings. Several of them do not expand when hovering over them. The bookmarks are displayed towards the right side of the screen, and the next tier or level should display towards the left. It does not. I have deleted and reinstalled the bookmarks several times. I have removed the subfolders, and the book marks work fine.
All of the bookmarks display and work correctly on my 27" iMac.
Is this a screen real estate issue? Is there a fix for this?
    Thank you!

These two folders have done this ever since I created them. I have deleted all bookmarks in Firefox and then reintroduced them all... Problem still persisted. I took the bookmarks out of the subfolders and deleted the subfolders. Bookmarks worked. I recreated the folders and added the bookmarks in, the problem still persisted.
I have a 27" iMac. The bookmarks open to the right, then the subfolders, right again. But they function because of the extra real estate. On this notebook, they open right, then left... With the exception of these two subfolders. It is a conundrum!
This issue actually drove me back to Safari. I like Firefox, but this is crazy!
    And, thanks for your help!

  • Why won't MacBook play some DVDs?

My black MacBook OS X 10.4.11 will not play some DVDs. I am not talking about burnt or data dvds, I mean movies. It plays most but will not play others, and it is not because of scratching or corruption because most have been brand new purchases.
This is annoying, how do I fix this?

What year and month did you get your MacBook. To make sure listen to these CD drive noises, tell me which one sounds like yours:

  • Macbook casing - some give and creaking

    Hi,
I've been using my macbook for a month now and am very happy with it, but ive noticed that on the left hand side, the white plastic in front of the usb and firewire ports has some "give" on it, in that i can press the plastic in under the palm rest area. On the right hand front corner, I can press the grey plastic on the palm rest can be pressed down a little. It obviously doesnt affect the use of the macbook, but am worried that it will get worse over time, as it certainly wasnt like this when i got it, and its not as a result of anything ove done (ive treated the thing like a god!!).
    Anyone else had similar issues?
    Thanks
    R

The plastic by the ports 'pushing it a little' is common ...there's nothing there to brace the side and what hold the shape together is just the molding itself. The right palmrest I don't believe is usual ...if it gets worse I suggest bringing it in.

  • Does my MacBook have some sort of graphics lag?

    Hey guys.
I've had my MacBook for two weeks now, and it’s been an "okay" experience. I detest the high-pitched sound it makes; it’s driving my crazy when I'm working on essays late at night. But alas, it’s not my primary annoyance.
Recently I've noticed horizontal lines running up the screen when the Flurry screen saver is running (Screen grab: http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture4jc0.png). This line runs up the screen every few seconds, and its really irritating. Presumably this is something to do with the MacBook graphics chip? I would really like to know if this problem occurs in other MacBooks or if I have some sort of defect in mine.
It also does the above when viewing iTunes visualisations in full screen.
Any thoughts/comments would be gratefully received.
    Cheers,
    Chris.

    Devin,
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
I did the test and got a score of 84 which seems to be pretty average for a MacBook, compared it to a few and the memory seemed to compare well to most MacBooks (Link: http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=188535&doc2=1)
Not really sure then - If your MacBook, and presumable others, struggle on it, then maybe it is just literally the chip working as hard as it can. I'm just trying to reassure my self that I don’t have a faulty unit.
On a side note, the high pitched sound on mine comes from the top left of the machine near power adapter connection - It exerts the high pitched noise whether or not it is plugged into the AC power. It's not so bad in the day, as I don't really hear it in louder surroundings, but at night it’s absolutely infuriating - I just run a few programs in the background and it fortunately stops. Certainly not ideal, I'll probably end up phoning Apple Care about it, as I'm sure it’s not an intended sound.

  • How to on a MacBook Pro-some switcher questions

I bought my first Mac in March of this year but i am still learning all the time about it.
I have some questions about Mac OSX at the moment i am designing a website for my sister she has bought her own domain with Fasthosts and i have been designing her website mainly in Windows XP via bootcamp because i do not know how to save in html on my Mac. Do i need to buy software so that i can design websites on my Mac so that i can save in html? I want to hand encode and then save in html? Is there a application in Mac that will allow me to do this? In Windows i can encode by hand in notepad and just save in html very simply. Also, Is there a way to edit what i have already done in Windows on my Mac. I tried using Text-edit and that does not bring up a plain text version of the code when i open up what i have already done.
Also, how do i resize a picture using my Mac. I often use Paint to do this because i have not figured how to do this on a Mac yet?
I have been wondering about this for a while also but how do i refresh a page using Mac OS. In windows you press F5 to refresh a page but what do you do with a Mac?
I am finding that the Mac does not cater as well for people who do not want to buy extra software to use it for example to have a Paint programme that is decent you need to buy extra software wheras on Windows XP Paint comes free of charge.

I bought my first Mac in March of this year but i am
still learning all the time about it.
Welcome to Macs!!! I hope you're enjoying them!
I have some questions about Mac OSX at the moment i

Two sided question - yes and no. I have never purchased any but there are some for purchase... I forget their names and I'm sure another user will chime in with them.
You can use both iWeb or Nvu. iWeb is more drag and drop, but you can publish your site to a folder, and then send that to your ftp server using a program called Cyberduck. Nvu is a free HTML editor... very similar to Microsoft Frontpage. It's decent, i've had it a while ago, but it's a bit slow and has a few bugs still. But what do you expect for free?!?!
I want to hand encode and then save in html? Is there
a application in Mac that will allow me to do this?
As a new web designer, I don't know what you mean by hand encode... But I think NVU will help you out with that.
In Windows i can encode by hand in notepad and just
    save in html very simply.
Yes - NVU you can edit the html code inside the program, or you can open the html codes in Text Edit and edit them that way.
Also, Is there a way to
edit what i have already done in Windows on my Mac.
I tried using Text-edit and that does not bring up a

Again, you can open the html in NVU and do it there.

use Paint to do this because i have not figured how
to do this on a Mac yet?
Paint?!?!?!?! Oh boy! In many programs there is the "inspector" button (like iWeb) and you can do it easily.
In iPhoto you can click on File-->Export--> And rescale the image in the size you want.
I have been wondering about this for a while also but
how do i refresh a page using Mac OS. In windows you
press F5 to refresh a page but what do you do with a

Refresh? You mean like safari? Apple+R

Really?? Paint is terrible. Any program that windows gives you for free, apple has a better counterpart available for download on the internet for free as well.
You can also try GraphicConverter. This was previously free on powerbooks but was forgotten on Intel Macs... probably because they didn't have a universal binary at the time. There is a free trial, give it a shot.

  • Macbook misses some key events for a few seconds

I have noticed that for last two months or so something strange happens to my Retina MBP. Once in a couple of days it stops responding to some key events. It is like it handles only one keypress out of 4-5. Nothing seems to be wrong with the keyboard and it is not about a particular key or keys. And about 10-15 seconds later everything goes back to normal. I do not see any suspicious messages in the logs, the computer is connected to the power supply...It happens just by itself in the middle of the day, when I am typing.
Almost looks like some interrupts get lost by the system while it is busy with something else. But I have checked the load level and running processes - nothing interesting there....And whatever it is - it happens during a very short period of time.

    Hi,
No, I have not returned my MBP yet. In fact, I would rather avoid doing this unless I am convinced if it is a hardware issue. And I do believe it is not. Just recently I have spent some time investigating it and I have found very stroing correlation between the moments when this happens and these messages in the kernel log:
    Jan 13 10:49:54 mbp-wifi kernel[0]: Sandbox: sandboxd(96471) deny mach-lookup com.apple.coresymbolicationd
    Jan 13 10:54:31 mbp-wifi kernel[0]: Sandbox: sandboxd(96499) deny mach-lookup com.apple.coresymbolicationd
    Jan 13 10:54:31 mbp-wifi.home sandboxd[96499] ([96497]): mdworker(96497) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd
    Jan 13 10:54:31 mbp-wifi.home sandboxd[96499] ([96498]): mdworker(96498) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd
    Jan 13 10:56:32 mbp-wifi.home sandboxd[96504] ([96503]): mdworker(96503) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd
    Jan 13 10:56:32 mbp-wifi.home sandboxd[96504] ([96502]): mdworker(96502) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd
And I have also noticed that my Spotlight database gets reconstructed too often, which means it gets corrupted.
From all this I conclude that it is most likely the software issue and it seems to be linked to spotlight. I saw people reporting similar things. So now I am researching on how to fix it without disabling the spotlight.
In general, I believe that the quality of Apple software is going down, it is not like 4-5 years ago And Apple does seem to care less and less about it.
If in your case it happens all the time, not just once in a while, and you see that a particular key has problems - it is possible that we are talking about the different issues and yours might be really about the keyboard.

  • Transferring docs from DELL to Macbook pro, some files got corrupted or won't open.

I got my mcbpro with os lion and i transferred all of my documents from my DELL laptop on an external harddrive, however i can open some jpgs and word docs and others won't open giving: Item “NAME.JPG” is used by Mac OS X and can’t be opened.
Also, one folder that had all of my school docs is completely blank, and I have it backedup.
I do have the necessary apps to open these docs (for example office for mac, and preview for jpgs) and I can also open some word docs and jpg images I have so I dont really understand why those ones won't be opened.

    http://www.macworld.com/article/153952/2010/09/superguide_switchingtoamac.html?l src=nl_mwweek_h_cbstories
And starting in Lion you can migrate the files from your PC to your new Mac.

  • Replacing a MacBook HD- some questions

I'm having a few small problems with my MacBook's hard drive , and I'm also running out of space. I plan to replace it soon. How can I replace a hard drive myself? What compartments should I open? What hard drives will be good in a MacBook? After I replace the HD, how can I get my original files back? How can I install Mac OSX on the new HD?
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
How can I replace a hard drive myself?
Here you will find a comprehensive guide to change the HD yourself, including what tools you may need.
What hard drives will be good in a MacBook?
It depends on how much space you wanted, and how fast you want it to be. 5400rpm is the speed on the factory HDs, you can get HDs in 7200rpm but it would create more heat and uses more energy.
After I replace the HD, how can I get my original files back? How can I install Mac OSX on the new HD?
There is a couple of ways to do this, I think the easiest way is to firstly buy a 2.5" HD external case, then put your new HD into it, then use programes like SuperDuper(its free) to clone your old HD onto the new HD and make it bootable.
Then you just simply swap the HDs and starting using your MB like you do now with extra space. Oh and put your old HD into the external casing as a backup storage.

  • Addressbook - export and import to different MacBook - omits some photos

I can't quite see what the link may be. My husband and I each have a Mac Book. Once in a while I copy the Master address book to my husbands computer (Using the File - Export - Address Book Archive) and then Import on the other machine.
For some reason SOME of the contact photos don't make it to the 2nd machine - most do. I can't see any relationship for those that don't. I've tried exporting just one of these as a VCard and importing - but the image does not appear on the 2nd machine
    Any ideas?

According to what I have heard yes but I have not tested.
