MacBook drive crashed,  Cannot download from iPod

Hi,
My MacBook drive crashed. When I try to connect my iPod to the MacBook with the new drive it won't work. iTunes tells me that the iPod is registered to another computer. You can only register the iPod to one computer at a time? It will not let me download from the iPod to the MacBook. If I want to register the iPod to the new drive it is going to wipe out al the information currently on the iPod. There has got to be a better way. Please Help.

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti (which has already been referenced in the link above) but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
Comparison of iPod managers
Senuti Mac Only
PodView Mac Only
PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac & Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac & Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Did i completely misunderstand iTunes Match? Do i have to start over?

I just purchased a new macbookpro and I would like to put the music from my iphone to my macbook.  I have downloaded from iTunes, however it want to add ALL music to my macbook.

When you plug in the iPhone, go to the menu bar and select "Transfer all purchases" to move them to your MacBook Pro.
If that doesn't work. Go here for a whole list of Apps that can help you.
I personally like Music Rescue the most.  You can get it here and use the License Key that they give out for FREE now.

  • HT5085 I bought music on my iPhone and cannot download from the cloud to my macbook pro.

I have done this in the past with no problem. My computer is a Macbook Pro and is activated for my itunes account. I manually search or the songs Ive bought on my iphone and can see it says purchased but its grey and not clickable. I dont understand why I cannot download them from the cloud into my computer.

What you can redownload will show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage
Or if you want music that you buy on your phone to automatically download on your phone then you can use automatic downloads : Store tab in iTunes > Preferences (command-comma) - that will only apply to new purchases made after you turn it 'on'

  • I cannot download from iTunes to iPod

For days I have been trying to download from iTunes to my new iPod, but my iPod never shows up in the source list in iTunes. I had to reinstall iTunes because it was not working properly and now it works just fine, but the iPod is not listed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the iPod hardware more than a dozen times over the last two days, I have followed all the instructions I could find online for fixing computer problems, and I still cannot get it to work. If anyone has any ideas, please..I'll try anything.

Your not alone, I am having the very same difficulties and have re-installed, re-set etc etc many times. I also spent an hour on the phone to Apple who could not resolve my problem, and the store I purchased it from is just a retailer and cannot help either. It may be something on my computer doing some corrupting - but I just don't know! I am virtually at the end without a clue what to do next except take it back and forget about owning an iPod

  • Old hard drive crashed, cannot get iTunes to find files

    Hi,
Please help. Been working on this for weeks and can't get it right. Am at my wit's end:
Old hard drive crashed; had new one installed. Tech person was able to find my iTunes on old drive and saved to thumbdrive. Downloaded most recent software and synced iPod - it "read" some of what was on it but would not play anything. tried to consolidate libraries/import from thumbdrive, then could view my whole library, but when I try to play any song it says it cannot locate the original file - does not matter if i purchased it from iTunes or added from CD. This computer is authorized, I've tried all the other "tutorials," added files (didn't work), tried using my iPod to xfer music to new computer - didn't work. I have my old hard drive booted and ready to go, can see the files and have copied them direct from drive to drive, still didn't work (followed the directions to keep music folder organized, etc.) What am I doing wrong?? I can't use my iTunes at all - just downloaded three new songs and that's all I can play from it. iPod itself seems unaffected.
    Thanks!! - [email protected]

Hi, you said you still have access to your old hard drive.
Can you move the entire itunes folder from the old to the new?
Not just the 'itunes music' folder - you need the parent folder of that.
It has an important file named itunes library.itl that holds ratings, play counts and the paths to your music files.
Copy that entire itunes folder and all its subfolders over to the new PC.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes and choose the ITL file you just copied over.

  • Hard drive crash - re-download iTunes purchased songs?

    Hello,
My hard drive crashed on the weekend and I lost several purchases I made through iTunes. Is it possible to get permission to re-download them?

Are they synced to an iPod? If so, you can transfer purchases from iPod to computer. Apple is not obligated to let you download purchases a second time. This is why it's important to have a backup.

  • Firefox crash, cannot download

I was downloading when my computer with Firefox, it crashed last week and I had to replace my motherboard. I just got the computer back from Apple.
Luckily the hard drive was saved.
So when I got my MBP back, I realized that Firefox now cannot download.
There is a 'part' file in the download folder but its zero K.
I switched off Downloadhelper and Flashgot, but upon restarting its still error.
I am worried if I throw away the cache or some other thing, that my bookmarks will be deleted, or that the 'Save Image to folder' add on disappears, since I have about 30 different folders pre-linked using that extension.
Can someone advise me on how to make the download active again without having to reinstall all my extensions again, or lose my bookmarks?
    Thanks!
    Calvin

    /Users/my_account/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
Cache is ~/Library/Caches/ and should be cleaned out regularly.
    Export your bookmarks.
    Firefox will import from Safari
~/Library/Safari (not sure why it doesn't get put in /Application Support
I'd get to know your computer, where things are, and keep backups (two) current.
Also, some good preventative maintenance goes a long way, along with backups, to repair your disk directory while booting from backup hard drive.
If you want to check or change the ownership, after repair permissions, BATCHMOD is an easy to use, safe tool. Find it on http://www.macupdate.com

  • External USB drive unusable while downloading from Internet

I searched for something similar to this, but didn't see anything...
I have a 802.11n AEBS (100MBit version) with firmware 7.2.1. I have an 500GB SEAGATE ST3500830A 3.AA USB 2.0 disk attached. I am on a MacBook Pro Core 2 with a 7200 RPM hard drive. I have my AEBS connected directly to my cable modem. I have one device - a Vonage VoIP adapter - connected via Ethernet.
I get about 5MB/s transfer to and from the disk under normal use. I store my music on the shared drive and have no problems streaming music or even movies from the air disk until I decide to try to download something from the Internet. The disk slows to literally bytes per second if I try to download anything from the Internet.
If I'm streaming a movie, downloading a big web page makes it halt and stutter. If I download a large file that takes more than a few seconds, everything on that disk comes to a screeching halt. I can't even stream (or copy, or move, or access in any way) anything on that disk until the Internet traffic is stopped.
Basically, if I'm using bittorrent, or if I'm downloading an installer, or whatever would cause me to access the Internet in some way for sustained transfer (like doing feed refresh in NetNewsWire,) it totally kills my ability to use the disk at all. As soon as the Internet traffic dies, it all starts right back up like nothing ever went wrong.
That means, it is totally impossible to say download anything from the Internet directly to the air disk. What kinda bull is that?
This is the default behavior regardless if I'm the only computer on the wireless or if there are others. It happens when connected via Ethernet. It happens in 5GHz mode. It happens in 2.4GHz mode. I have reformatted the disk twice. I have tried just about everything imaginable outside of chucking the thing in the river and buying a new one.
Anybody else have this problem? Found anything to fix it? Any ideas what I can do?
I commented in another thread about having a problem with the AEBS crashing regularly (requiring an unplug and restart) using bittorrent. I wonder if the two problems aren't related in some way. Perhaps the CPU is underpowered for all the NAT translations, encryptions/decryptions, and IO in different directions going on?

It may not be a problem with your AEBS but it could be an issue with your cable modem or your VoIP adaptor. Here are a few suggestions:
    1) Disconnect your VoIP adaptor.
    2) Connect your MacBook Pro directly to your cable modem with an Ethernet cable and try to download from the Internet.
