MacBook Duo Core upgradeable to 802.11n?

Sorry if this has been asked before.
But just wondering if it's possible to upgrade my Macbook to wireless N. I bought my first ever Macbook last year and only months later they came out with the Duo 2 Core version with wireless n which really ****** me off

Are you sure Apple is selling it in the Apple store. I could not find the upgrade there. As far as I know you have two choices for the N upgrade for the Core Duo machines.
You ca buy the 802.11n MacBook module and install it yourself. There are places that sell the module online. You also can have one of the companies that sell the modules to install it for you. This is what I recommend unless you are comfortable tearing down the MacBook to replace the card.
The following is a company that sells the module.

  • New core duo 2.0ghz but 802.11n enabler won't work!!

Just bought a brand spankin' new MacMini for the living room to use as a Media Center. Have got an Airport Extreme so wanted to upgrade the new mini to 802.11n wireless like my MacBook is.....but it doesn't seem to stick! The install of the Enabler 'seems' like it works but when you check the settings for wireless it just shows a/b/g but no 'n'! Shouldn't this now work with the new mini!??

I'm upset about this as well, I just got my mini the other day with expectations that I could enable the "n" portion of the airport "extreme" card inside it as well so I could finally make use of the full 5GHz band with my new Airport Extreme router that I got a few weeks ago when my son got his iMac.
Surely it has to be that it's not installing because it's reporting that this is a "mini" and not the MacBook's or iMac or larger, and not because it had anything to do with the C2D processors which only had a Airport "Express" card in them, which is the difference between them. When I seen that it said Airport Extreme on the box, even though it only said "(802.11 a, b, g)" I, like many are expecting it just needed to be updated with the patch to activate the "n" on it, like the previous generation MacBooks, iMac, etc. The newer generation Mac's all have it already activated and the software patch installed is why they say it on the box.
Or at least, that was my thinking behind it. Did they rip us all off and only put an Airport "Express" card inside the new "Mini's" and falsely advertise it has an "Extreme" card in it? I haven't payed any attention, as of yet, to know if anyone has dissected one or not and posted pics of it.
Where is the patch fix to update the new "Mini" to make use of the "n" portion of it? They have been feverishly releasing all sorts of other updates for everything else they released of late, why not the updated driver patch for the "Mini"? Surely all it would need is a check to see which "Mini" it's being installed on to make it activate it, to make sure it's not trying to install on a previous "Mini" but still allow it on the newest ones, especially once you've spent the $179 for the new router that has the patch inside it and it already recognizes 802.11a, it's not like it's a b/g only card.

  • Current MacBook Pros Now Upgraded to 802.11n Networking - Software Upgrade

"These Mac computers support 802.11n in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station using the included enabler software:
iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)
MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme card option"

and the new airport handles 802.11a in addition to the ones already mentioned above in the prior post...
Also, although 802.11n is still draft, Apple pushed this out (as they did with draft-g) hoping they have the right technology for the soon to be finialized spec. The hopes are usually that the hardware remains the same and if there are slight alterations, that a simple firmware update will fix it... Obviously it is always a risk, but chances are it will workout in the end, because imagine if it didn't! It would be bad for consumers and for apple. Hmmm you just bought our $180 router that we were wrong on, and now we are releasing an entirely new one, sorry. This will most likely not happen.
BTW Apple TV doesn't really impress me, I was praying Apple would come out with DVR like ability... Sense they do not have such I still think Windows Media Center, and TIVO, have an edge for people who do not like to buy non-HD quality shows that can be HD for free over the airwaves... Just my random tangent for the day.

  • I have a 2006 model macbook duo core with 10.4.11, can I somehow upgrade to lion?

My 2006 Duo Core Macbook has OS X 10.4.11.  Can I upgrade this computer to Lion or do I need to buy a new one?  Computer is in great shape and would like to keep it.  Any info would be awesome.  Thanks!
    Dave

If it's a Core Duo model than you can upgrade only as far as Snow Leopard 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better is needed for Lion.
You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD for $29.00 at any Apple retailer of from the Online Store.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

    Hey guys
    3 questions!
    1)
Can the first generation Macbook Superdrive with:
"Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer read support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed"
    Able to read DVD+R DL?
    2)
Also, i backed up my tiger DVD onto an external HDD in a .dmg image form.. however i do not have a DVD+DL writer in my Mac but i do have one in my PC. Any PC softwares to recommend?
Is it reliable to change the image extension from .dmg to .iso then burn it in Nero?
    3) any better softwares?

    1) Yes, It'll read Dual-Layer +R DVD's.
    2) Nero burns DMG into bootable images.
    3) Alcohol 120% does the same thing, and I like it better.

PowerISO also burns and views DMG, it's my favorite.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n upgrade options for early Intel Core Duo iMac

I have an iMac from mid 2006. I recently purchased a Timecapsule - partly for the wireless back ups, and partly to upgrade my wireless network to 802.11n. There is a software upgrade from Apple that upgrades older 802.11 a/b/g Airport cards in the iMac to 'n' standard. Here is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjIzMDkzNA
The page states that the upgrade is compatible "If you have a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)". What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work. I have also tried to install Airport Extreme updates (2007002 and 2008004) and these report that the hardware is not compatible. Doing some searching around these forums and others, the issue with the original Core Duo iMacs not being upgradeable to 802.11n is out there - shame Apple weren't more explicit.
I have seen that there are various USB based 802.11n adapters available. Whilst searching on this topic, I also came across a site offering various Mac upgrades, including an upgrade to the Airport card to upgrade wireless capability from 802.11g to 802.11n. It looks like a straight replacement for the internal card - link here:
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=461
The company offering this is in the UK, but the product appears to be from a Sonnet, a US company. Does anyone out there have experience of installing this product (or having it installed) and can you comment on how it performs? Is it a seamless replacement for the original Airport card?

What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work.
If it says you need to have a Core "2" Duo processor, then it seems to me they are telling you very clearly that it will not work with the earlier Core (no "2") Duo iMacs.
The "late 2006" iMacs with Core 2 Duo (except for that one education model they mentioned) have wireless networking hardware that is 802.11n capable. When they were initially sold, Apple chose to NOT enable the "n" capability for some reason; maybe because the standard was still in flux and not enough testing had been done with the driver. Later, they enabled the "n" capability with a firmware update. But that was only possible because the wireless hardware was already capable of doing "n."
Earlier iMacs do not have this hardware so there is no way to enable it with a firmware or software update. 802.11g is plenty fast enough for Internet access (you won't notice a difference with "n"). If you are using Time Machine over wireless, it may take a while longer to do that initial backup (you could connected it by Ethernet cable when it is doing that initial backup), but subsequent backups are incremental, so the "g" versus "n" speed difference will not be as critical. Since your iMac is Core Duo (32-bit) and the future of Mac OS X is 64-bit, especially after Snow Leopard's release, it may be best to save your money and keep your iMac intact (not opened).

  • Question: why the 802.11n doesn't work on my brand new MacBook?

    dear sirs,
I've just found out that the 802.11n upgrade doesn't work for my MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core Duo. How come? Is it possible? What should I do to have it talk to my also new AirPort Extreme 802.11n at the same rate?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Tomaso

Also on http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/performance.html it states:Most currently shipping Mac systems support the next-generation 802.11n technology in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station.2
    2. All Mac computers with Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Xeon processors except the 17-inch iMac with 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor support the 802.11n technology in AirPort Extreme. These 802.11n-compatible Mac systems require enabler software that is included on the AirPort Extreme CD.

  • Upgrade to new duo core macbook

Can anyone tell me if my software designed for my ibook G3 (or soft ware for the G4 for that matter) will run if I upgrade to the new macbook duo core??

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
That depends on what software you're talking about.
Anything that runs in Classic won't work. Most other applications should work through Rosetta (emulation for Power PC applications written for OS X).

  • What's really working in 802.11n ?

I have the new Airport Extreme Base Station and a MacBook Pro (Core Duo) with the right card in it - acc. to Apple both capable of the 802.11n protocol. And?
None of the "pure" 802.11n settings on Airport let my computer connect with the base station. It has to be left on the "802.11n (802b/g compatible)" setting.
This leaves out the menu selectable "802.11n only (2,4GHz)" and the "802.11n only (5GHz)" options.
This is such a shame because I would have preferred especially the 5GHz options combined with "...n" because the band is less common and suffers less snooping and interference. But my main question is then: do the "Extreme" devices actually deliver 802.11n? How would I know? Traffic seems no worse through my (now disconnected) old AirPort ExPress.

Hello Osmund Iversen. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have the new Airport Extreme Base Station and a MacBook Pro (Core Duo) with the right card in it - acc. to Apple both capable of the 802.11n protocol.
If you MacBook Pro has a Core Duo processor, than according to Apple, it is NOT upgradeable to 802.11n. Only MacBook Pros with Core 2 Duo processors qualify.

  • Can I swap out my airport card for one that handle 802.11n?

I have an older MacBook Core Duo and I see the newer MacBook Core 2 Duo can connect using 802.11n?
Is it possible to swap out the airport card in my MacBook with an updated one to get the faster speeds?
    Thanks

Yes, there are third-party cards that will work. QuickerTek has one that should work.

  • What do I do to get my MBP to enable 802.11n?

I have been wondering why my internet connection wasn't as good as my girlfriend's who recently got a new MacBook, so I purchased the 802.11n enabler because in network utility it only had 802.11 a/b/g so I looked at the requirements and it was noted that the "n" came with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, but mine is just a simple 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo. I have upgraded to Leopard and the reason why I mention this is because I have also read that when upgraded to 10.5, Leopard automatically updates to enable 802.11n. Well I sit and wonder if something went wrong while updating? probably not, but I can't even install the AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002! @!#$? I have a mac, it runs 10.5.2 and the requirements for that update are 10.4.8 and higher, and an Intel-based Macintosh. I meet the requirements. Should I have had updated the Airport Extreme before updating to 10.5? Why is this a problem? it should be easy... right?

That's exactly what you need to do - and what I did a year ago. Check iFixit.com for instructions. Check this out

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler software

Today I purchased an Airport Extreme and was able to set it up quickly
on my iMac (2.15 GHz Intel Core Duo). I was also able to connect to it
on my MacBook (2.0 GHz Core Duo). In looking at the connection information
from the Airport the MacBook is connected using 802.11a.
The Apple Store says that the Airport Extreme includes the 802.11n enabler software, but
I was only able to find the software package for controlling the router.
I must be missing something. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry but Core Duo Macs do not have 802.11n hardware.
Only Core 2 Duo Macs have the 802.11n hardware.
The enabler is on the disc but isn't compatible with your Macs.

  • AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler not working

Hello, I just installed the Time Capsule software onto my 1st gen MacBook. I saw that it installed the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler, but after looking at the network utility. All that show up is: Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g), it does not give the little 'n.' I ran the installer twice, but no joy. Any help would be great!
    Thanks!

ursina, Welcome to the discussion area!
Go to the Apple menu and select about this Mac. Does it say "Intel Core Duo" or "Intel Core 2 Duo"?
Only the Macs with "Intel Core 2 Duo" processors have the 802.11n hardware. If you Mac book has the "Intel Core Duo" processor the enabler is useless.

Please don't post your email address in a public forum. You never know who is going to pick it up.
First use KB 301724, How to identify your iMac to identify what type of iMac you are having a problem with.
Then click on the appropriate icon below to visit the area for that iMac and post your question there.
