Macbook Extreme Harddrive issue!

Hi there.
I am in dire straits over a problem I am having with my Macbook black.
When I open up my Macbook and turn it on, the computer plays the startup sound and goes to the loading screen with the Apple logo. Although the spinning animation beneath the logo continues to turn, it is on this screen that the computer hangs. It refuses to go beyond this screen.
I attempted to follow the steps on page 91 of my User's Guide. I tried the option of powering down and then powering on while I hold the option key. When I do this, it displays the harddrive icon, yet when I press on the arrow to select it, it does the same thing as before and hangs at the loading screen.
I also tried to access the Disk Utility function, however, I cannot get into this, either!
I also tried to reinstall the operating system, however, when I go to do that, it does not show my harddrive as a volume to install the system software on.
At the time, I was working on a document in Microsoft Word. I restarted my computer, and this was the result.
I am running the latest version of OS X, and everything was installed from Apple Update yesterday.
There were no additional peripherals attached to the computer at the time.
Please help, it is absolutely essential I figure this out, as I have a paper due Friday and a large exam on Monday, as well as all my notes from the semester stored on this machine.
Thank you in advance. I am a Mac newbie and some help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to apple forum.
If your hard drive is not showing, it could be failed or not properly seated loose by accident or shake.
Try to reseat the HD using this:
http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/diy/order.html
Hope that help, if not you should bring that to apple store.
Good Luck.

I cannot get the new mac mini to wake from sleep and trigger the displays - this is the second mac mini I have had and both have had the same issues. It worked before on my macbook extremely well...
Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • Macbook Pro Wifi Issue

I incorrectly posted this in the wrong thread this morning.
I'm hopeful you might be able to help me diagnose a problem I'm having. I'll provide as much detail as possible.
I have a first generation MacBook Pro. As of this morning I was running 10.5.6 and up until this week was using a linksys router and a comcast cable modem.
I used to have a great wifi signal throughout the house (always full strength), and around 12-18 months ago noticed the signal would weaken. The best I would get would be minus the top bar on the signal, and usually only if I was directly above or next to the room with the router. There were no new phones or devices added that might adjust the signal. On the other side of the house, I would have no signal at all.
My wife has a nine year old ibook and has no issues connecting through wifi.
When I bring my laptop to her parents' house or to the Apple store, where they use Belkin on N or Airport Extreme, I get a full signal.
I've recently suffered a hard drive failure and had a replacement drive installed. The problem persists despite the software update.
Not knowing if it was a router issue or an airport card issue or a combination thereof, I went to the Genius Bar. The genius recommended I upgrade my router to Airport Extreme, and if that doesn't work to return it and he'd focus on the airport card or antenna. I could get the flat rate repair (no AppleCare at this point) for $320+ to repair the problem if Extreme didn't work.
I installed the Airport Extreme router and got a full signal in the basement, far side of the house, upstairs - everywhere. Until around 10pm. The signal died from the basement. If I walked into the room with the Airport Extreme router, I'd get a full signal. If I left the room, I'd get a partial signal. If I walked any distance (10-12 feet), the signal would die. I restarted both the modem and router with no change. I reinstalled the linksys router and got a depreciated connection. I restarted the Airport Extreme again and got a full signal throughout the night, morning, through restarts, and when I returned home from work.
Last evening after using youtube extensively it died again. Linksys would barely work if I switched back, and no matter how many times I restarted I couldn't get the signal to last outside of the area of the router. I left it in the basement overnight shut down, restarted this morning, and had a full signal.
I'm looking for any potential guesses as to what may be causing the problem. I don't want to replace the card if it's the antenna or sink too much cash into a machine if it's a heat related issue linked to Generation 1 syndrome.
During all of this the ten year old ibook works fine. I know a lot of macbook pros have issues with their wireless and don't want to sink in the cash if it's more complex than that. Any advice is much appreciated!

    Hi nashie1002,
If you are having issues connecting to your WPA2 WiFi network after a recent update, you may find the troubleshooting steps and settings in the following articles helpful:

  • Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue

Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue
    Running latest version of Mavericks.
    Followed the exact bootcamp proceduce.
Have official window 8.1 version on cd.
All goes well until I have to format the 65Gb partition. Disk=0 and partition=4
Can't get over it. Altough I formatted it via a hint found on the internet with "dislpart" in NTFS. Wich also went weel and give the labelname "BOOTCAMP". But still no luck.
    I have two questions:
1/ How to start my mac again in normal mavericks mode?
2/ How can I overcome the windows installation issue?
Tried already a lot of hints found on the internet.

First, make a time machine backup. You will need to erase ands reformat your hard drive. I had the same issue. The issue is that you can't install Windows using bootcamp without having the hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do this from disk utility or recovery mode (hold down command and r at startup). Then you have to restore the backup to the hard drive. Then make a usb installer drive with bootcamp and then partition and install. Here's a tip: after you install bootcamp and are in the Windows desktop, go into the installer drive and then go into the bootcamp or support folder, then find a installer that contains the Apple bootcamp drivers. Also, you will need to convert the disk to an iso file. TO MAKE THE USB DRIVE FROM A DISC, USE THIS LINK

  • Macbook pro shutdown issue

Macbook pro shutdown issue when I push the power button it immediately goes into sleep mode

    Hello Marrio22,
Thank you for the question.  With OS X Mavericks, the power button has new functionality:
OS X Mavericks updates the power button behavior on Mac computers.
Using the Power Button to Sleep & Wake
Tap the power button in Mavericks to put your Mac to sleep or to wake it up:
Tap the power button once to put your Mac to sleep.
Tap the power button again to wake your Mac.
Press the power button for less than a half a second to sleep or wake your Mac. This duration is similar to pressing the Space bar or Return key to wake your Mac. The power button works this way across all Macs using OS X Mavericks, including both notebook and desktop computers.
    Accessing the Shut Down Dialog
Press and hold the power button for 1.5 seconds, to bring up additional options:
Forcing the Mac to Turn Off
Hold down the power button for 5 seconds to force the computer to turn off. Important: You may lose unsaved documents if you force the computer to turn off this way. Use this method of turning off your Mac only if it has become unresponsive for an extended period of time. Normally you should shut down the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu, or from the shut down dialog pictured above.

  • Macbook Pro 96gb kingston SSD + 1TB WD Scorpion Blue: Harddrive Issues

    Hi,
I would like to ask to following thing:
I installed the 96gb kingston SSD & the 1tb WD Scorpion Blue in my macbook pro (Mid-2008 model).
I use the 1tb as storage drive so my data gets moved to this drive. Now the following thing is happening:
When I try to play a file in itunes (.m4a audio file for example) the file gets loaded but suddenly stops playing. Same when I move large amounts of data to the hard drive it suddenly stops, the beachball pops up wait 10/15seconds and then continues.
Is there a way this can be fixed or is this a drive error? Should I check it with drive genius?
I don't have them installed in any raid or something like that. I just plugged them in and installed Leopard 10.6.7.
    Greetings,
    Maxime

I have to add that both drives are formatted with Journaled HFS+

  • Airport extreme connection issues

Yesterday, I bought a new Comcast-compatible modem (Motorola SB5101) and an airport extreme.  These replaced an old (5 years or so) SB5101 and an equally-old airport express, which was too old for my new MacBook Pro to be able to manage it through airport utility.
I replaced both components because I got sick of my internet connection dropping constantly, many times a day for the last few years.  (I know, but it's true!)
Comcast insists that the signal coming into the house is fine and is constant, so it's not the ISP dropping the connection.
The cable comes into the house, into the modem.  Ethernet goes from the modem into a Sprint AirRave (Sprint says that must be how it's set up).  From the AirRave, the ethernet goes to the airport express.  From there, I can connect computers and devices wirelessly, but from the airport express, an ethernet also goes into my home distribution panel, so that in each room of the house you can plug directly into the ethernet (about 8 outlets).
The problem happens whether or not the AirRave is installed.
Sometimes the connection drops for a few seconds and re-connects.  Most often when it drops, and I go into Network Preferences Diagnostics, Wi-Fi = green light; same with Wi-Fi Settings, Network Settings, and ISP.  But Internet and Server = yellow.
Sometimes running the diagnostic fixes it and it re-connects.  Other times you must reset the airport and/or the modem.  Sometimes it will not re-connect even after multiple times re-setting those deivces.
Since installing the airport extreme yesterday, sometimes I get a message on my Macbook Pro that says my MAC address is being used by another device (?).
I have no knowledge about networks AT ALL, no idea how my computer can have the same MAC address as anything else, no idea what specific settings I should be using -- I always have let the setup happen automatically.
If anyone has any idea how to solve this I'd be very grateful.  I'm not sure whether I've given enough details, like I say I lknow NOTHING about how to set up a Network.
It was a nightmare setting it up yesterday, once I got it up according to instructions, I was in an endless loop -- every time I tried to open a page in my browser, I was taken to the Comcast Setup page instead, asking for my phone number and account number.  Entering this took me to a new page saying "unable to connect with our system."  I was on the phone with Comcast forever trying to fix it, resetting the modem and airport over and over again.  Eventually somehow it worked, but later that night (and again already this morning) the connection has dropped a number of times.
I thought getting new components would fix the problem, now I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do.
    Anyone?
    Thanks!!
    -- Craig.

Since installing the airport extreme yesterday, sometimes I get a message on my Macbook Pro that says my MAC address is being used by another device (?).
This usually indicates that there may be something amiss with the NAT service or that each network client cannot access it properly.
To verify that the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), Motorola modem, or Internet service is NOT the issue, we will temporarily remove the AirRave from the network equation.
To do so, please power-down the modem, AirRave, AEBSn, and computer(s). While they are all powered-down, disconnect the Ethernet cable going to the AirRave.
    Next,
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the AirRave and Ethernet distribution patch panel.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Temporarily connect the Ethernet cable coming from the modem to the WAN port of the AEBSn.
Reconnect the Ethernet cables coming from the AEBSn's LAN ports to the Ethernet Distribution Patch Panel.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Macbook and itunes issue - something more .......?

    Hi
I'm wondering of this is not an iTunes specific issue as I have tried everything but the issue is still not resolved.
I cannot get iTunes to work and I have done all the usual stuff to try and repair it? I have, switched users, permissions, removed iTunes folder and associated files to desktop, deleted iTunes from system, reinstalled new version even reinstalled system software OSX and Software Update - and still it crashes on launch! OSX is 10.6.5 and the iTunes is the new download from apple 10.1. There is nothing connected to the Macbook by USB etc.
Does anyone have any further ideas please as now I am wondering if there is another issue to do with the hardware or some other issue..
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • MacBook Japanes keyboard issue (and very poor Apple customer service)

I AM A BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED APPLE CUSTOMER / USER.
Over the past 3 years I have been a loyal purchaser and user of Apple products. I have bought a PowerBook G4 17", 2 Airport Extremes, 2 Airport press, 2 Ipods, 2 Nanos, 1 Shuffle, Aperture, various accessories and more recently a black MacBook.
I have relocated to Japan with my job in the past few month where I purchased my MacBook from an official large retailer (Yodobashi in Tokyo) because I was buying many other household items at the same time. My laptop works beautifully but is equipped with a Japanese keyboard (katakana) which is proving very confusing for all non Japanese users (incl. myself).
I visited the Apple flagship store in Ginza (Tokyo)to share my request. I was informed that they could swap the keyboards but only for laptops purchased in the flagship store. I believe that my Apple product merits the same level of customer care as an Apple product purchased in that store.
With this in mind, I am still seekigng a solution to my issue and would be grateful for some help. I believe that as a loyal customer and an English speaking user, I am entitled to being able to swap my keyboard (particularly as the service is provided).
Does anyone have any useful hints as to how I get my keyboard swapped (by Apple preferably to avoid voiding the warranty).

    Hi desalaberry.
    Welcome to macbook forum.
I am not to familiar with Japan authorized service center and their apple store policy, you also can check this:
    http://www.apple.com/jp/store/english/
    Keyboard and Mac OS Language
Your Mac can be ordered with an English language (U.S.) style keyboard, or Japanese - the choice is yours. The Mac OS X operating system supplied with your Mac is multilingual so can be set up in English and a large range of international languages.
If your macbook still returnable, just return that to the original store and order one with english layout on apple store at Ginza or other near you:
    http://www.apple.com/jp/retail/business/
    (scroll down to bottom)
Other way is to buy wired or wireless english layout mac keyboard and connect that to your macbook.
Hope ypu can talk it out with them.
    Good Luck

  • MacBook Pro Heat Issue

I just recently received my MacBook Pro this past Wednesday and I've been addicted since. This is the first Mac I've ever owned and felt it was time to move onto something better and more stable than M$. I do use Linux but it doesn't have near the support like Mac does except maybe Suse (only because of Novell).
My problem is my MacBook Pro gets very hot. I've read the entire book that came with my machine and I noticed that it said that the operating temps are between 50-95F (10-35C). Am I reading/understanding this wrong? I've performed average use of my machine and have used a Class 2 Laser thermometer (made by Stanley) to take the temp and i've reached up to 115 degrees F just above my function keys.
If i remember correctly from left to right it goes Northbridge, GPU, and then CPU. The 115 mark was at my CPU on the far right side. I also never hear the fan on this machine come on. This is the quietest lappie I've ever heard after extended use. You hear the fans spin up all the time in the Dells, Gateways, Compaqs, etc.
One of my coworkers turned me to the overheating issue with these machines and it made me quite nervous. I understand that they had somebody who had cerebral palsy apply the thermal grease. What i gather and understand is that is now become an insulator instead of an adhesive. Is there a Real way to remedy this situation?
I've read stories of people having this issue and stating they took the machine apart themselves, cleaned up the goop, reapplied AS5 and their temps dropped (from reports) 15-25F and even only 2 degrees F. I know that silicon can take a beating in the heat but i'm kind of worried about the other components in my machine.
Is this firmware update really going to make a difference or is this some form of coverup? I'm being cynical now but i'm worried that such a great product is going to be a very large paperweight. I ran tests on my old Gateway 600 series laptop (top of the line when i got it) and it hangs and about 98-99F at its high points. The fan also kicks on and is loud as **** but seems to cool it enough to be reasonable. Although, this machine does make me quite warm when sitting on my lap.
Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what can be done? Or what have you done to try and remedy the issue? Am I doomed like the rest of you that have this lappie? I haven't seen anything from apple about this issue other than some firmware update.
Thanks for the help and ideas in advance!

Master P, you did misunderstand Apple's specifications for the range of operating temperatures. Those specifications apply to the ambient environment in which you operate the computer. In other words, Apple recommends against using your computer if your room temperature is at 95 F or above, or below 50 F -- temperatures that would be uncomfortable both for you and the computer. Of course some people such as photojournalists do productively use their MBPs in extreme environments such as the Sahara Desert or the upper slopes of Mount Everest, but I'm sure they understand they are reducing the life expectancy of some of the components, such as the hard drive in the computer.
A temperature of 115 F or higher on the metal strip behind the function keys is perfectly OK. You don't need to touch that strip to use the computer. My criterion is whether the parts that I need to touch remain comfortable -- the keyboard, trackpad and wrist rest areas. They do on my computer, although the left wrist area can reach body temperature after extended use.
In my opinion the recommendations to remove and reapply thermal grease fall into the Urban Myth category and do not make technical sense. And performing that "fix" will likely void the warranty and an AppleCare policy, should you subsequently have a logic board or CPU failure. The "fix" will be immediately visible to Apple service folk should the computer have to be sent in for repair.
No, you are not doomed. My CPU temperatures after hours of operation generally run in the 40 to mid-50 C range, depending on what I'm doing. At the moment CoreDuo Temp is reporting 48 C. Continuous 100% load of both processors for extended periods results in CPU temperatures in the 60s-70s C, which is well below the maximum continuous operating temperatures specified by Intel.
The SMART disk temperature of my 7,200 rpm hard drive has always been reported by Hardware Monitor to stay well below the operating temperature maximum of 55 C recommended by Seagate.
So I expect to get years of useful service from the MBP.
Both because I like the tilt for typing and because it provides an additional heat sink to cool the computer in heavy use, I use an aluminum tilt stand whether the MPB is on my desk or in my lap. I use a KoolSink because it's very portable, but there are many laptop stands that work well.

  • AirPort and MacBook Pro Internet Issues

I have two unrelated issues with my network set-up.
My ISP is AT&T U-verse, however I use an AirPort Extreme as my main router. The Extreme network is extended by an AirPort Express so that a PC on the far side of my house can receive the connection. In this part of the house, my MacBook Pro can receive the signal, but the PC running Windows 7 with a Linksys Wireless-G USB Adapter will not connect. This is a new problem, as this computer used to be able to connect (but with a weaker signal than my MacBook) up until about two weeks ago.
The second issue is with my MacBook Pro (2011 model running Lion). Sometimes, when the computer wakes from sleep, I am told that my IP address is in use by another device on the network and that I should enter a new IP address (no idea how to do that). I am unable to get on the Internet when this message is displayed and I have to reboot my AirPort Extreme in order to get back online. I think that when my MacBook wakes from sleep, it is being duplicated on the network because once I was told that the Shared name of my computer was already used and that it would change to Anthony's Macbook Pro 2. It also seems to only happen when the MacBook falls asleep while still open.
If it helps, these are the devices connected to my network: MacBook Pro (2011, OS 10.7), iMac (2006, OS 10.6.8), PC (Windows 7), PlayStation 3, Wii, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS
    Thanks in advance!

Also, just found out that the two iPhones also will not connect to the Express, just my MacBook.

  • Time Capsule & Airport Extreme Speed Issues

    Hello everyone!
I hope to be able to have a solution to my home network problems..??!! (hopefully!)
My Home Network Setup & Problem
I have my ADSL modem hard wired into a 1st generation Airport Extreme, I also have a 3rd Generation 2TB TimeCapsule extending the wireless network.
One iMac & one MacBook Pro (new(ish) ones) use the network for home use.
All softwares and firmwares are upto date.  My house is relatively small with excellant wireless coverage throughout.
My problem is that when I transfer files wirelessly across the network either to my TimeCapsule or computer to computer it peaks at about 2mb/sec and is "sporadic" at best!
I monitor the wireless traffic with iStat Pro and see a graph which goes up and down continuously, it obviously is not happy.  The same happens with downloads from the web but this might not be a network issue, but maybe it is?
It is not normal to wait 4hrs for a 7Gb transfer, surely!!
Any suggestions would be most helpful.  I've reset everything, started from scratch and had no success.  I can answer any questions you may need to know to help with this, i'm not an expert with computers but I have an alright knowledge.. Please don't confuse me with too much technical lingo but I understand the basics!!
All machines have OSX Lion also
    Matt

Possibly, but I would venture to guess that the TC is not in the optimal location to maintain the highest data transfer rates on the extended network with the AEBSn.
To help locate where that would be, we will need to make Signal-to-Noise Ratio calculations to measure the signal quality of the AEBSn at the location the TC.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
You can easily find the Signal and Noise value using System Profiler on your Mac laptop.
ref: Click on the Apple icon on the menu bar > About This Mac > More Info... > Contents > Network > AirPort > Interfaces > en1 > Current Network Information > Find your wireless network > Signal / Noise
While your still in the System Profiler, note the value for Transmit Rate.
These values should be negative numbers. For example, mine currently read: -67 dBm / -95 dBm, with a transmit rate of 27 (Mbps). Plugging in these numbers yield: SNR = -67 - (-95) = 28. My Mac Mini is about four rooms away from my AEBS with about five walls between them. As you can see, the signal is still quite useable ... but the bandwidth is minimal, especially for streaming.
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
Again, what we are interested in is the SNR value of the AEBSn at the current location of the TC. Since we only want to measure the AEBSn, you will need to (temporarily) power-down the TC. With your MBP near the TC, take the signal & noise measurements. Since we are trying to find the best location for the TC, move the MBP to the next possible location that you can place the TC and take the same measurements. Repeat this as many times as you require to build a good sampling of data for different potential locations. Now that you collected the data, plug them into the SNR formula to come up with the SNR value. Note these values and determine which location provides the highest SNR value ... this, theoretically would be the best location of the TC. You will want SNR = or greater than 25dB.

  • Advice appreciated on a MacBook pro HDD issue

    Hello,
I've just suffered my first real system problem and even though I have a few ideas for how to fix it I thought I'd post here and ask for some advice to see what you guys think.
First the problem... Basically my MacBook Pro's HDD has an issue and won't boot. I don't think it's a physical problem with the hardware (although I'm open to advice on this too), I think it just needs a reformat and fresh install of the OS. But obviously I need to get my files off of there first and this is the problem, but read on for more details.
So that's the problem in a nutshell, but here's the full detail.
It's a MacBook Pro, late 2011, 17", 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, bought in Miami September 2011 while I was on holiday there (I live in the UK), came with Snow Leopard installed, was upgraded to Lion a few days after purchase and then upgraded to Mountain Lion about a month ago.
Last week I was using it when it suddenly restarted itself. I let it restart, then began using it again and about five minutes later it restarted again, but this time it didn't boot properly.
It stayed on the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning clock-type wheel. There was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen, it took ages to move, then finally got to about 33% and the machine restarted itself again.
I tried lots of restarts but every time it did the same thing or it never even showed the progress bar, and just had the spinning clockwheel forever.
So I held down alt and booted from Mountain Lion's recovery partition instead. I launched Disk Utility and tried to verify / repair the drive but it came back with errors and said that it couldn't fix them. Apologies, I realise typing this that anyone reading would probably quite like to read the error long but I can't remember it and I'm not currently at home. If needed I'll run it again and post.
Anyway, the basic point is that Disk Utility is giving a message saying to copy all my files off the drive and reformat because it can't fix it. Incidentally the SMART status of the drive is fine / normal. Not showing any problems there, which is why I'm hopeful it's not a hadware issue.
So I need to copy my files off, and this is the real reason I'm posting this thread, because I don't mind doing a reformat / fresh install of Mountain Lion, but my last backup is a couple of months old (I know, naughty me) so while it wouldn't be the end of the world to copy files back from that, I would lose a bit of data so would like to get them off the MBP's HDD now.
At this point, let me list the kit I have at my disposal:
    - At home I have the aforementioned patient (MacBook Pro), a 2TB external HDD with USB2 / FireWire 800 and a NAS box that sits on my network. I also have one of those cables that lets you connect an internal HDD via USB (more on this later, as I suspect it's going to be my best hope).
    - At work I have a Windows 7 PC which I do not have any admin rights to, A Windows XP PC that I do have admin rights to and an iMac that is running Leopard (10.5.8) and cannot be upgraded due to various boring work reasons I won't go into here.
So the first thing I tried was booting into the recovery partition, launching Disk Utility and trying to clone the HDD over to the external 2TB drive I have. Cloning the drive like-for-like gives an error message (again apologies, I can't remember it) and trying to copy to an image file on the external drive gets all the way to the end (takes ages because Disk Utility keeps going to sleep) but then when I try to mount the image it gives an error and fails, so I don't trust this method.
So booting to recovery and using Disk Utility seems to be no good.
I thought about trying to take the MBP to work and launching it in target disk mode, then copying files, however I read that you can only have one FireWire device (the target computer) connected when doing this and my iMac at work doesn't have enough internal HDD space to copy all my MBP's files off, so I would need to have an external drive connected to the iMac in addition to the MBP, which sounds like it's not a good idea, or not supported by Apple anyway.
I thought about making a bootable Mountain Lion USB stick as I have a 16GB USB stick I could use for this, however I don't know how to make the bootable USB using my iMac as it's on Leopard (can't be upgraded for work reasons) and doesn't even have the Mac App store on it for me to re-download the Mountain Lion install file.
I think I have the Snow Leopard DVD that came with my MBP so could probably boot off this, but does that allow me into Finder or anything that would let me copy docs from my internal HDD properly over to the external drive? Or is it just going to look similar to the Mountain Lion recovery partition, with Disk Utility and a few other options?
I don't know whether the Mountain Lion recovery partition lets me install Mountain Lion onto my external drive? Or a USB? I was a bit scared to start clicking through options to see whether it would ask me which drive I wanted to install to, just in case it doesn't and begins erasing the main HDD as one of the first things it does.
So this leaves the cable that allows me to connect internal drives via USB. This cable has saved my bacon in the past and I suspect it may be my best option once more. Obviously this means I'm going to have to open up the MBP and remove the HDD but I installed the extra RAM myself and I've installed full-size (3.5") HDDs in the past so I should be able to handle that, unless there's anything radically different with 2.5" drives I'm not aware of.
I've heard people mention DiskWarrior in the past but to be honest if I'm going to spend that sort of money I'd prefer to just put it towards an new, larger HDD, probably a 2TB model.
So there we are, thanks for reading this far. If you have any advice about another (or better) way to get my files off the MBP I'm all ears.
I've never actually done a fresh install of Mac OS before either, only upgrades downloaded from the Mac App Store so any advice around that might be handy too, but mainly it's the file copying I want help with as I'll probably just boot from the recovery partition to reformat and reinstall Mountain Lion.
    Thanks

Yes, on your profile.. But, did you phone update just before this happened?
I want you to view this image on both your phone and computer: Fiery Sunrise | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
If it looks different, it is not your images, but rather your iPhone....
