Macbook fails to boot and safe boot won't log in

This is my first post here after owning a mac for about 2 weeks and then having a serious problem that needed a good dose of Unix know how to fix!
Symptoms are:
1. If you try an boot the Macbook you get a blue screen with a working mouse pointer but nothing else and none of the shortcut keys work
2. If you try and boot in to Safe Boot it won't accept a user name and password (not even root) and gets into an infinite loop.
Cause:
Something called ypbind is trying to contact a Domain that doesn't exist so it gets into a loop and fails. This problem seems to be fairly easy to achieve by playing with the Directory Utility (I was trying to connect to a Windows work group).
Solution:
Boot the macbook into Single User mode (by holding Command-S during start-up). You may need to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button to get it to restart.
At the command prompt locate /etc/defaultdomain and clear its contents using Vi or Pico. Some people have suggested that you can delete the file but clearing it works as well. Then reboot (type exit). The machine should reboot fine. Other things I did to be on the safe side were to check the hard disk and check the permissions using the diagnostic tools on the OSX install CD (it's bootable).
This took me ages to sort out so I hope this helps someone else in the same position.

I have just managed to get duped into getting re-infected with that same PC Optimizer Pro virus.
Ordinarily, System Restore does not remove all the damage from a virus.
Now that you're able to back up your important files, it seems best to to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents and reload the applications.
   Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery tab > Recovery tab > Remove everything and reinstall Windows
If that doesn't work, you can obtain recovery media from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here. For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery media, which begins on p. 57 of the User's Guide.

If you restore to Windows 8, be sure to follow the instructions when you upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Leopard always boots into Safe Boot

Every time I restart Leopard it boots into "Safe Boot" mode. To get it to boot into regular mode I have to keep hitting "x" after the startup sound while booting.
I read that Leopard shouldn't boot into safe mode unless I hold down the shift key when starting up. My shift key isn't stuck down (I wouldn't be able to type this message in lower case if it were). But Leopard insists on booting into safe mode by default.
I applied the latest updates just this morning. So everything is up to date.
What can I do to get Leopard to boot by default into normal mode again?

Maybe I need more specifics. I clicked on the Apple menu in the topbar and clicked Restart. I then clicked Continue when prompted to restart immediately. I then held down the Command, Option, R and P keys. While holding down the keys I heard the startup chime once (not twice) and my computer started normally.
I'm wondering if I did the right thing since I didn't hear the second startup chime.
Did I miss something?

IMac randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7 (??)

Is anyone else having problems with their Mac (running a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7) randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a restart or shut down?
(Indicators being: seeing the login screen even when "automatic login" is enabled, the proper video drivers not loading - indicated by laggy desktop animations, WiFi not working properly, Menu Bar icons that normally show - not showing, etc.)
**Note: I migrated from a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup, but did not import "Settings". I thought this would be the best way to keep from encountering any issues with 10.6/10.7 incompatibility.

I think i got it :
The progressbar while booting ( booting in safe-mode ) came from the wireless keybord and is reproduceable.
At evening I shut down my iMac an put off my mouse and keyboard. To startup I put on the iMac and immediatly after I switch on keyboard and mouse. In tihs case the keyboards sends some event wich leads to safe-mode.
Know I wait until I switch on the keyboard. In my opinion this is a bug, i can live this way but i hope it will be fixed.
I will know take a look at it while not switching off the keybord, power consumption should be acceptable

Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
and paste into:
C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error.

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD, restart your MacBook while holding down the C key, this should start your Mac from the optical drive instead of your hard drive. Choose your language and install Snow Leopard. When it's done and you've restarted on your new 10.6.3 system run software update to upgrade to 10.6.8. Done.

My MacBook Pro won't load any web page I have restarted and safe booted still nothing

My MacBook Pro will not load any web pages. Safari opens but when I click on top sites or type in a website it will start but not get past half of the address before stopping and going no further. I have restarted and restarted in safe boot and still no change. I'm am connected to the internet wirelessly and my iPad mini is connecting to the internet wirelessly fine, so I think the internet is fine. What can I try next?

Reset Safari.
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
Uncheck the boxes beside all items.
Just check the box beside “Remove all website data”.
Click "Reset".
Empty Caches
Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.

does your MacBook Pro have a removable battery? If so, then it originally came with grey installation DVDs. If it doesn’t have a removable battery, look on the bottom of your MacBook Pro for its serial number (it’s etched there in tiny print). If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three of them; if it has twelve, write down the last four. Include the three or four characters in your reply; they can determine which model MacBook Pro you have, and the model will determine whether it originally came with grey installation DVDs or not.
If your MacBook Pro did originally come with grey installation DVDs, then you’re going to need to find them (or buy a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit) to reïnstall Mac OS X on your current hard drive, or to install it on a replacement hard drive.

Macbook pro 10.8.3 Safe boot hangs

Retina MacBook Pro Mid 2012 running 10.8.3 with latest SMC update.
My system will not complete a "safe mode" boot, it hangs with the progres bar at about 1/4 of the way. I am trying safe boot to be able to run the system while all extra drivers etc are disabled for diagnostic purposes.
Things already tested:
From Recovery Drive: Disk utility has been used to repair the disc and reset permissions.
From the Recovery Drive, start terminal and run "fsck_hfs -f /dev/disk0s2", completes correctly
I tried a save boot with verbose mode on. (In terminal before reboot, execute "sudo nvram boot-args="-v -x" )
The boot process shows it passes the fsck_hfs (no surprise), then it shows:
IOThunderboltSwitch(0x0)::listenerCallback - Thunderbolt HPD packet for route = 0x0 port = 12 unplus=0
AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::checkStatus - received Status Packet, Payload 2: device was reinitialized
And there is hangs.
So it looks like whatever comes after the Multitouch Driver initialization is what is causing the hang.
Any suggestions about this?
Is this a hardware problem or a software one?

Having the same problem, with a 2014 MBP running Mavericks 10.9.5, no peripherals connected.
Took it to Genius Bar today, where they reinstalled the OS, and after taking the afternoon to get it up and running again, I'm again having the boot problem. It hangs at exactly the same place, right after the AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::checkStatus message. Only difference is that before today's visit it wouldn't boot into Recovery mode -- it'd only boot to Single-User -- and today it will. It won't boot into normal or Safe mode.
This is a nearly-brand-new MBP, so hardware failure (while certainly possible) seems a bit improbable. Other points against hardware failure:
booting into diagnostics mode, the system reports all is OK
fsck is not reporting any errors
when I boot into Single-User mode I can still read files on my hard drive (e.g., system logs in /var/log, my user files)
it fails to boot even with no peripherals connected
Can anybody point me to a detailed list of the events that should occur in a successful boot? Specifically, I want to know what should happen after the MultitouchDriver event mentioned above, since (one would think) that would narrow down the list of places to look and questions to ask. The standard procedural info ("just reinstall the OS") isn't reassuring.
Oh, and I tried to post this as a separate question -- after all, my version isn't 10.8.3 as this thread suggests -- but the browser in Recovery mode (Safari 7.0.6) won't let me post a new question. (On the main page for this community, the search box's "Submit my question to the community" does nothing when clicked, and often neither do any of the links that come up in search results.)

And I think this issue is coming from a few different problems I've had with my MacBook Pro on lion...one major thing was probably the fact that I changed from Lion to Mountain Lion...and then changed right back (I think I did back up my stuff first), but somehow it didn't agree with my computer. Also I've been wearing it out a lot by throwing it with the case into my car frequently...maybe a bit much, idk...also though I have a lot of trouble keeping up with the numerous files that build up on my desktop and don't know where to begin. Let's just say my computer has pretty much had it, although for months it's been functioning normally.
...oh yeah and did I mention I had to get a brand new hard drive, with that not really making a difference as to how bad I, um, throw my computer around (it's not as bad as you think but to be candid, blech). I did bang my computer at one point in a rage attack and made sure no one really knew when I took it to get it fixed? TMI...that's what I deserve....so.

Anyways at the bottom of this help article you will notice the very end of PRAM reset directions where you hear the start up chime two times. That did not happen, but somehow out of nowhere the computer stopped the safe boot mode routine and the progress bar didn't show up as I continued to hold down the given keys. I really don't know where my luck came from there...and I also found an article that fixed my computer the first time and I cringe to say that it came from a person on Apple Discussions complaining about something similar that one of my friends helped me google. Planning to actually bookmark the applehelpwriter article in case I just happen to need it but i'm pretty sure someone will be on here with an answer at some point.
SO....I did get my comp fixed twice now, but I hope that somebody will go back and read the beginning of my question explanation to see if I'm doing something that may be overwhelming my computer. If this safe boot thing happened to me instead of me testing the computer myself AND MORE THANA ONCE yikes...something needs to be done. Take note that the only reason I'm asking the community's advice is that I'm past my computer's contract so if I wanted to I couldn't take my computer to get it fixed and I planned to take one or two more classes in college again to complete my certificate.
Please help, some people must run into this situation at some point, either way if they ask or don't I'm sure they're lucky to get it fixed somewhere.

27" imac yosemite update hangs. Required power cycle and safe boot to get the update going. Now all OS X update do the same.

27" iMac Yosemite update hangs.
The original upgrade to Yosemite (10.10) took almost a full day! The computer hung during one of the reboots and just showed a blank grey screen, no apple logo, no progress bar, nothing. I left it like that for about an hour thinking it might be working in the dark... Eventually I had to power cycle. Disconnected power at the wall outlet for about 5 minutes, then reconnected and tried to start. After about 20 minutes, got to the same point, grey screen:no action, again waited at least an hour.
Then I did a safe boot. System came up OK in safe mode to the log in screen. As soon as I logged in, it proceeded with the interrupted update, which ran to completion. Yay!
Now, every update to Yosemite that arrives gives men the same grief!
To add some more, the "Pro Video Formats 2.0.1" update has installed about 4 times, and is asking to be installed again? There's no indication that it fails the update so whats going on?

I saw the set hibernet mode to 0 trick and it failed. Guess I can try 3 because reinstalling OS X did nothing but cost me another few hours and a little faith in Apple. Getting annoyed as I see how many people complain of the identical issue and the fixes are variable and random. Suggests to me that it is a major design flaw in the hardware and Apple got too cute with the just works idea and didn't put a damned power button on the display so there is no manual way to do it and no 'insert a pin here' type trick to reset the thing.
Asking for a refund tomorrow. Past the 14 days so maybe they'll say no but if so then every time this happens I will swap it out. At least then I know it is a three hour fix and as I was working on this for hours today it occurred to me that if the trick is to do 57 different things and maybe one will work then that is not why I made the switch to Apple. I could plug everything in on my PC and it all 'just worked'.
Really poor customer service - the support folks are very nice and I am sure they know that this is a systemic issue but aren't allowed to say so. Feeling pretty stupid for going on faith right about now.

The repair button is always clickable when you are on your Recovery partition, it's nothing to worry about. Do this instead.
Then start in single user mode (Command-S)
Type fsck -fy to check your disk first (it wont let you start working on a disk until you have checked it)
Then type mount -uw / (dont forget the slash) to mount your Macintosh HDD
Then type passwd username with username being the username of your admin account
It will make you type the new password twice afterwards. From then you can boot into OSX as normal and use that account to fix the rest of your passwords.

Only boots in safe boot - Believe I tried everything

So, I here I was needing to use my Mac when the only thing I get is a spinning wheel and nothing else. I have a 13-inch mid 2012 MacBook Pro running 10.9.4 here is what I have done.
Entered into Recovery mode and checked permissions and repaired disc,
Re-Installed Mavericks over the top
Erased and restored from Time Machine Backup
Erased HDD and installed 10.8 (Machine boots fine)
Installed 10.9.4 won't boot
reset PRAM
reset SMC
Boot in safe mode fine
Repaired disc permissions and it still won't boot with a fresh copy of 10.9.4
Have checked memory
Reseated the memory
Now I am at a lost, thanks for any tips

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
