Macbook Fails to Boot, no Apple Logo, any ideas?

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this might be a hardware or OS problem or this is in the right category, but I'm hoping someone can help me out with a problem I'm having with a friend's Macbook.
When I hit the power button, the chime plays, and the screen turns light gray or white, and then stays there. No apple logo, or spinning gear, no other icons, just gray. I've left it like this for a while and nothing happens.
If I hold Option to try and get a list of drives (with or without the install cd) it gives me a working mouse cursor, but never gives me any drives.
If I try safe mode, nothing happens, white screen, no change as long as I try it.
Same thing if I tried to boot from CD, the CD spins for a while, but then nothing.
Same for verbose mode.
If I try to reset the PRAM it does reboot correctly and chime again, but no other change.
It seems like these options are functioning, but nothing is working after that.
I've read that the missing logo might mean a problem with firmware, but I can't see any way to fix that without OS X installed.
Is it possible the HD has failed? Would that also explain the missing logo?
Any ideas from anyone with a similar problem? I've Google'd different variations of the problem, but can't find anything except problems with the Apple logo present.

it is possible that is had been dropped. an easy fix you can try is to reseat the ram. to do this is very easy. you may already know how but if you dont here is some instructions. just make sure you take them out as if you were replacing them to inspect them of obvious damage (such as it being cracked) also while you are in there reseat the HDD. who know this may fix it but it is so simple and quick that if it does not work it is not a waste of your time.

  • MacBook won't boot past Apple logo on start up

I recently installed 10.5 on my MacBook and it worked fine until today when I installed a security update and a MobileMe update on it. after it restarted, none of the applications would work (including system preferences and finder) and would not shut down without using the power switch. When I went to boot it up again, it gets as far as the Apple logo with the spinning loading icon, but won't go any farther than that, and after about a minute, the fan starts running at high speed. I ran the hardware test and booted it from the disc and both showed no problems. the disc utility on the disc boot was even able to read the hard disc information. I'm hoping that this isn't a hard disc problem, because I already went through that before in February.

*I ran the hardware test and booted it from the disc and both showed no problems. the disc utility on the disc boot was even able to read the hard disc information.*
This suggests that your problem isn't hardware but that your OS installation is munged. I suggest that you run your OS installer and use Archive & Install. Assuming you have enough empty drive space, this will install your operating system without disturbing your data or applications. You'll have to reapply all the OS updates and you might find that a program or two also requires reinstallation, but not many. The last time I did an A&I on my personal computer I didn't have to reinstall any programs.
What happened? Dunno but given that you'd just installed an OS update before this, I suspect that the updater either failed or that there was a small OS problem that the updater magnified. Being in charge of a couple Mac labs, I see one or two of these post update failures a year even though I always run Disk Utilities to verify the disks before I update.

  • My iMac won't boot passed Apple logo..ideas?

My iMac has been out of commission for a few mow. It happened out of nowhere one day, I came home from work, started it up like I always do, and when Icame back into the room, it was booted to my desktop but everything was distorted and pixelated, colors skewed, lines all over. It worked enough for me to reboot it. From that moment on, I've never made it passed the Apple logo. The screen is distorted at the logo, with tons of blue vertical wavy lines. The spinning wheel just freezes. I've tried holding the button to boot from the install disk and all that does is bring up an error in a bunch of languages telling me to reboot or power the computer off. I've tried using the fsck mode to repair permissions, but that made no difference. I cannot boot in safe mode. I tried running the Apple Hardware Test by holding command+option+P+R and everything checked out okay. I even took out the two chips from beneath the screen, made sure everything was clean and reinserted them. I'm not helpless when it comes to computers, but hefty problems such as this stump me..even still, the DIY fix it methods I've read through are straightforward yet nonetheless not helpful for my problem. Various forum postings with similar problems led me to believe it may be the graphics card, but I wanted to check with you guys for myself..would the graphics card prevent it from booting completely like that, or does my problem lie elsewhere? My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this..I hope someone has some sort of insight or ballpark estimate of the damage ($$) for me!
    -Lorenzo

With the pixelated disply, it sure sounds like Graphic card.
But not Safe Booting indicates a serious Hard Drive or other problem.
(Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), but we can't do that test.
ballpark estimate of the damage ($$) for me!
If you no longer are covered by AppleCare, it may not be worth having it fixed, I'd pure guess around $1,000

  • I removed an app on the 3gs, and now my phone is really slow, so i turned it off, and turned it on again, and its stuck with the apple logo any ideas what to do?

ive also tried holding the home button and the sleep/wake button, it went off and came on and is still stuck on apple logo

If after you have tried the restart method (Hold down the home button and the power button for at least 15 seconds) then I would advise doing a complete factory reset on the phone.
Connect the phone to your computer, and once the device appears in the top right bar, click on it (It will be titled something like "Amanda's iPhone, or iPhone").
Once you have done this, click on the back up iPhone option, (This will save whatever files on your iPhone that aren't on your computer, to your computer.)
After this is done, click the "Restore iPhone" tab to completely reset the phone. If this option won't work, try the first method again when your phone is plugged into your computer and hold the home and power button the same time.
Hope one of these will work for you:)

  • 2011 Macbook Pro white screen after apple logo and spinning wheel

    Hey there guys,
My 2011 Macbook Pro has encountered some problems. Firstly while i was at school, i opened up my computer, usually the computer would require you to type your password, but my login page became fuzzy, white lines everywhere. So I restarted my computer and everything was okay. After that i came back home, my computer was running fine, after surfing the net for a few hours, my whole computer suddenly became blue. So what i did was i just restarted my computer, after that my computer would boot up Apple logo would come up, the spinning wheel would also come up, after 30-40 secs it would turn black screen and come back on as a white screen and would just stay like that. It would be on the white screen. Tried some rebooting ways but all didn't work.
1st: I wanna know whats the problem?
2nd: Is this a harddrive failure? (Because i have alot of important documents and personal stuff in my hard drive and i hope it isn't a crashed hardrive)
    Thanks for your help..
PS: Im running on Moutain Lion, but i have no idea what version it is.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Starts to boot, shows Apple logo for 2+ minutes, then starts again

Yesterday the computer started to boot up as usual with the 'boot chord', Apple logo, then the screen went black, and started over again.  This time it successfully booted and ran normally for the rest of the day.  This morning, it never gets beyond the boot process; i.e. start chord, Apple logo for several minutes, then black screen and the whole process repeats over and over again.  Front panel status LED is on and steady.  I tried 5 different boot disks (internal HD, two external SuperDuper clones, a DiskWarrior DVD and the OSX 10.6 install disk and the results were the same.   It is still under extended warranty, but I can't afford the downtime for Apple to repair it.  Any idea what might be wrong?  Any thing else I might try to get it going again?

Hopefully  the Time Machine backup is intact and the computer will continue to work with it connected (requires a 3rd party eSATA RAID controller card).  Assuming all the hardware works, I am unclear how best to restore the app's from the TM backup.
The official way to do a full restore from TM is to boot from an installation DVD and select "Restore from Time Machine" from the Utilities menu. I don't see how that will work if your backup is on a third-party RAID, because the controller requires a driver that isn't on the DVD. That may be why you can't boot from the DVD.
I think your best bet is to clone the installation disc to a bootable volume and install the RAID driver on it. The volume could be hosted on an external storage device or burned to a DVD. See here for an example of how to do this.

  • Why does my 4s keep returning tot the boot screen (apple logo) when I press the home button to see the lock screen?

3 or 4 times since I first fired up my iPhone 4S yesterday, it has displayed the boot screen (apple logo) when I press the Home button to display the lock screen. After 10-20 seconds the phone displays the lock screen, but at that point it has to search for a cell signal (as if the phone just booted up), which takes another 20-30 seconds.
Is anyone else having this issue?
Another thing that has happened only once, but that seems related, is that when I clicked the lock button on the top of the phone, the phone displayed the spinning circle that usually displays when an iPhone or iPad is shutting down.
Any ideas on what MIT be causing this?

Disk repair hasn't worked as well.
I just wanted to add a quick observation: after I tried the TM restore for the first time, Safe Boot in verbose mode seems to be stuck at this line "VBoxAdpDrv: version 3.1.0 r55467". This may point to the problem being a Virtual Box problem.
I use Virtual Box extremely rarely - haven't used it in many months. After a re-install, I'm going to remove it and then try the upgrade. If it works, then we've probably found the culprit. If it is real, Apple should maybe add a line saying Virtual Box known to cause problems with this upgrade (or fix it ).

  • HT201263 Iphone not booting up, apple logo seen intermedantly

Iphone 4S - not booting up
apple logo comes and goes intermedently

Hey, I've got two suggestions for you, one is better than the other. Both are based on personal experience.
Better, but still inconvenient: There is an app that's causing you issues. I had a bad installation of an RSS reader that was causing slowness, reboots, and very, very long backups. When I restored the iPhone, I did so without any apps and lo, the problems were gone. When I reinstalled that app, they came back. I know things are supposed to be walled off and such, but I've seen a number of apps updated to fix a memory leak, and those can cause issues. The app has since been updated and the issue went away.
Second, and more painful: The battery is, in fact, on the way out. Same iPhone, a year later. Battery wasn't holding a charge. Acted a bit like you describe. Stupidly allowed a non Apple certified person do the fix, as he charged less than half of the $2200 Apple wanted. Now I have a 3GS because he botched the repair and Apple got the $200 anyhow.
I hope it's the first, I really do. But that battery is pushing 3 years old, and I'm sure it's been cycled enough times that it's near its end of life. Might want to consider one of the better third party repair shops that will do a diagnostic for free or a nominal fee. Avoid Bubba in the next town over at all costs. I should have.

Plug it into the charger/wall socket and let it charge for at least an hour. It just might start charging. If you have already tried charging it for a fair amount of time and it didn't work, try restoring the device with iTunes.

I keep getting an error The ipad can not be synced because the sync session failed. same error for my iphone. any ideas?

Try deleting iTunes from your computer. Do not delete your iTunes library. Then download and install a fresh copy if iTunes. Reboot your computer after installation of iTunes.
Then reboot your phone. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.
Reconnect the phone to your computer running iTunes and see if the sync process will go through.

Have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to boot up properly ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should reappear and it will hopefully boot up fully - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
