  • No fan noise and heating up

    Hey to all,
I have a macbook pro running on leopard since a few months.
I was reading this topic about high noise of the fan nad heating up on the left side (above and below.
Well i have the same thing ( heating up that is)but "NO FAN NOISE".
Since i dont hear anything, meaning that the fan doesnt work at all?
    Should i be worried?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

You should never be worried - it's not good for you!
If you are concerned I think the first step should be downloading and installing the "iStat Pro" widget, easily located in the downloads section of Apple's web site. It will show you up-to-the-second system-wide temperatures as well as the speed of your fans.
It may be that you just haven't been doing anything with your system that taxes its resources enough to cause the fans to ramp up.

  • 2011 MBP Fan Noise and Heat Concern

I have a 13 in. MBP with the i5 processor and it seems that everytime I start up: netflix, watch youtube, browse a certain website (soundcloud), or run any of my CS5 programs, the fans rpms shoot up, it heats up and I can even hear the CPU working like crazy. I'm wondering if these are common symptoms or indicative of a faulty processor or of poor internal cooling (ie. the heat sink or fans). I also have reason to believe that this issue has caused my battery cycles to prematurally increase past 1000 since I got this machine in the summer of 2011. Does anybody have any advice on what steps I should take to resolve this issue without breaking the bank if it is not a faulty processor?

Stop using Chrome and it's associated software. It is running your CPU usage way up.
Heat will not cause battey cycles to increase, but programs that are using too many CPU cycles like Chrome is will certainly run down the battery quickly - heat or no heat.
You can't hear a CPU working.

  • T430s fan noise and fan speed monitor not working?

Hi, I just bought this T430s from the outlet store. I noticed a rather loud fan noise and found out s lot of compalints about the T430 model. I guess the problem I have is not as severe as those T430 users (e.g. the noise may not be as loud), but I still want to monitor the fan speed. Here's my problem:
    1. none of the third party software can show fan speed, they can only show the cpu temperature, such as speedfan and aida64.
    2. I tried to download the fanspeedcontrol driver from lenovo, but after installing it, the task manager does not show that the fanspeedcontrol exe. is working.
I do not want to change the fan speed, but just want to monitor the speed so that I can have a better understanding of whats going on. Does anyone have the similar problem?
    Thanks.

Hi Alan, (I know this conversation was from several months back),
I don't know the answer to your questions.  It seems that your fan is operational, as far as its most basic functional requirement.
I don't have experience with any particular software programs or widgets that indicate fan speed, sorry.
Do you have any view, through software, of the CPU (and GPU?) sensed temperature?  Those would be very good data to observe.
If it were either disconnected or non-functional, I assume that your computer would report a POST error right after power-on (and self test).
But I just wanted to suggest here that in an unfortunate possible scenario, consider if the thermal grease on the heat sink(s) was inadequate (or was missing), then the fan would be running higher than normal (probably always spinning at a high rate), and it won't be taking enough heat away from the processor(s), i.e. inadequate cooling.
Which could be corrected by a technician (or DIY).  This is pure speculation, it is not a definite, at all.

  • Macbook pro retina start to make loud fan noise and work slow

I bought macbook pro retina display less than one years ago. For some reason my macbook pro has been making loud fan noise for about five mounth. Whenever macbook pro makes the noise, all the programs start to run slow. Typing, opening safari, and etc takes forever. It takes 20min to 40min for the noise to stop. At first, the macbook pro made noise once or twice in a day, but now it's making the noise frequently; It happens every 2-3 hours. It got to the point where it start to annoying me. Is there a way for me to fix this issue? If not, can I use one year warrenty to fix this problem? Thank you.

If your Mac works slowly when fans turn on, it's quite possible that there's a process which is eating the CPU and/or RAM.
Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), select "All Processes" above "Show" (in the toolbar) and then, order the processes by CPU usage. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU or RAM? If so, tell us the name.
Additionally, you can reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Hi , i have late 2011 model of 13 inch macbook pro. Installled mountain lion . Around 200 gb of free space. Now when i start my mac os the icons lag and it takes time to open up even scrolling the mouse you can see it drag and also the fan runs at high rpm .The cpu processesor runs at peak. When i switch on the windows the fan noise still there but the performance is good. Please advice me what might be the problem and what shall i do to solve it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Santa Rosa Macbook fan noise fix, sort of

I don't know how many of you guys noticed this, but when I got the new Santa Rosa MB it was definitely louder than my previous C2D Macbook. Even when idle doing nothing.
I found out that the lowest rpm on the new Santa Rosa goes at 1800, which in a quiet room at night is way to loud personally.
In order to fix it just download fan control 1.2 and then put the lowest RPM setting to 1000. For me that instantly made the MB super quiet again.
Hope that helps to those that wish more silence out of the Santa Rosa books.

I made an appointment at the Apple Store I got it from (4 days after I purchased). I told them about the weird clicking noise and they took it to the back (store was pretty loud) and came back in a few minutes and offered to exchange it since I was within my 14 days. The new one is way quieter and only makes fan noise with intensive processes (as expected). Doing some research after the fact, I believe my issue was the ticking/clicking one described here: http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=MacBook#.22Mooing.22fan_noise.2C_Ticking.2FClicking_Fannoise Overall, they handled it pretty well (I was prepared to field an inquisition about this manufacturing flaw, luckily I didn't have to and they recognized the problem pretty quickly), and I'm finally enjoying my new MacBook.

  • Satellite U920T-11C fan noise and touchscreen fails sometimes

    Hi,
I just purchased the U920T-11C a few days ago.
I like it but there a few issues they are putting me off and make me want to return it.
The first issue is the loud fan noise that comes on. Is there anyway to turn this off?
It happens about 15 mins into using the web and then goes on and off every 5 mins or so. It is really loud and being in quiet room it is noticeable.
Is there anything I can do to stop this? I am only using the web and not running any other programs.
Also I have noticed the touchscreen fails to respond for no particular reason. I don't know if there is a pattern but it is frustrating when it just stops for no reason and then sometimes just works again.
Looking at these forums it seems like it is a common problem with the Toshiba. I have a few days before I can return so if these are not solved I think I might just go form the Samsun ATIV Book 9 Lite instead.
    Thanks

    > It happens about 15 mins into using the web and then goes on and off every 5 mins or so. It is really loud and being in quiet room it is noticeable.
I assume the noise is coming from the fans which need to run faster in case the internal temperature would increase.
What you could do is to change the cooling module performance in single power plan.
You could also decrease the CPU performance. This would lead to smaller heat dissipation and the fans would slow down.
    > Also I have noticed the touchscreen fails to respond for no particular reason. I don't know if there is a pattern but it is frustrating when it just stops for no reason and then sometimes just works again
You could try to calibrate the digitizer
Go to control panel (Windows key + X -> control panel) -> Tablet PC setting.
The first tab Display contains options like Configure the pen and touch display.
Here you should be able to start Setup and to identify the touch screen.
The first option should contain 1 internal LCD
At the bottom you could find button to calibrate and reset the settings for this internal LCD.
But it could be also an hardware malfunction. I cannot say for sure why this happens but maybe an technician should take a look on the hardware.

  • High Fan Noise and 100% CPU usage by Dock

My MacBook Pro 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8 just started making a constant fan noise. When I checked the Activity Monitor, it shows my Doc CPU usage as 100%, and my Percent User Usage is about 52% System 2.5% and % Idle is 47%. These numbers are when there is nothing running except Activity Monitor. When I log out and log in as another user, the high fan noise stops, and the CPU usage of the Doc is <1%. I have tried restarting my computer, Rebuilt my Permissions, Emptied the Trash, and Reset the SMC (I think I did it correctly for the MBPro, but the Power Light did not change, and nothing seemed to be any different on my computer.) I think I recently did a recent Apple Update, but I don't know how long ago that was. But it was sometime in the past few days. Does anyone have any idea about what could be going on?
    Thanks,
    Frank

  • Mac Pro will not boot, constant loud fan noise and nothing else

    hello,
earlier tonight,i put my mac pro on sleep, then later on, when i wanted to take it off sleep and use it, it made the loud fan noise, which it always does but goes away, but this time it the fan wount slow down and the loud noise stays and i dont see anything on the screen. im guessing the fan noise is the ATI x1900 card...
any help please..i just bought it 2 months ago...

Hi, here are the steps I would go through. I would unplug the Mac Pro completely from everything and look at the video card's fan intake to make sure it isn't plugged and just make sure everything "looks" correct. I would then plug the machine back into one monitor/keyboard/mouse (leave all the other peripherals disconnected. Once that is done push the power button. Does anything happen? If not then if you have another mac and an external hard drive, make a copy of the OS on the drive and see if you can get the Mac Pro to boot off that drive. If the video card doesn't work then it will not show anything when booting off an external drive. If the external boot does work then I would suspect that you have a bad hard drive (or it crashed). At that point I hope you have a back up of all your data and such.
Mind you these are steps I would go through. What a nightmare. One other thing to check, make sure your monitor didn't die.

  • Macbook strange noise and 3hr battery life

    Hi,
My new macbook (before-june09 model) is making a strange DVD Drive noise when I turnit on, restart and wake from sleep. It also gives me only 3hrs of battery life.
I recently exchange my 2.5GHz macbook with NO noise and 5 hrs of life because I wanted to upgrade for this 2.66GHz, 350 GB, 4MB RAM when the price dropped due to the new models.
Now I'm starting to regret,is anybody having the same problem, or I just got a bad one.
    Thanks

This is the temp on my uni 08 vintage after adding a 256GB Crucial M4. That's right, 150 degrees Fahrenheit when measuring with a meat thermometer just above where the SSD resides in the chassis. The battery lasts about 38 seconds when I take it off power. .... I'll try the 0309 firmware to see if that helps.

  • Problem with fan noise and battery on g510

    I bought an new lenovo g510 ( core i5 4200m and amd r5-m230 ) from 3 days
and notice that fan has a noise most of the time and when i check the battery wear level on hwmonitor it is has 1 % wear level so why i got these problem and my laptop is bought from just 3 days !!!!!!

Hey. Really sorry for late answer. i got same model (but i7 , r7 m265 )
For the fan noise ; check out gpu and cpu temperatures . clean the fan dust with power manager program. and update drivers.
for the battery , %1 wear is nothing . only affects 1-2 mins . battery has internal smbus battery fuel gauge and it automatically calibrates battery full charge capacity. but you can manual calibrate fcc with power manager. we are very lucky because on some hp ,samsung etc laptops , battery comes with %10 wearage (like my old laptop).
you post this message 6 months ago. if your battery wear is >%15 now , send battery to service. they will replace a new battery. if battery wear <%10 , your battery is normal

  • Horizon 2 fan noise and stand damage

Picked up a new horizon 2 on boxing day. The fans run constantly and are quite loud. Even just idling on the desktop or browsing the web the fans are running all the time. Are other owners experiencing this?
Also, there are scratches and paint damage to the stand. Anyone else have this? The store I bought it from sold out and will not be getting more stock so I couldn't exchange it.

    hi rob1234,
When you open Task Manager do you see any significant application(s) that's eating up CPU resources?
      - Link to picture
If there are applications that's eating up CPU resources then the sound that the fan is emitting is normal (Idle or on full load) as the fan is trying to cool down the CPU/GPU.
If there are no application(s) that's eating up CPU/GPU resources, try to boot in to the BIOS > Advanced Tab > CPU Setup and ensure that EIST and CIE (Enhanced Halt State) are enabled then C-State to C1C3C6C7.
