MacBook fan running very loudly
I have been having issues with my MacBook overheating and causing the fan to run very loudly (so loudly I can't listen to music or watch videos on it very well). I have had the motherboard replaced twice this year alone by Apple and I still have coverage till November of this year. They told me if I keep it on a flat surface (like a desk), the problem shouldn't keep happening. More times than none, I only have one application running like Safari or Firefox with only one page open and still the computer is incredibly loud. Any suggestions? I really do not want to take it out to a retail store again unless I can get a new MacBook out of it since it'll be the third time the motherboard has been replaced.
Hi Brandon: This is a shot in the dark, but check out the troubleshooting tips in the Apple article below.

Satellite A300D - Fan running very loud and notebook is getting very hot
I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction as what to do with the overheating problem i currently have with my A300D. I have had the laptop for under a year so it is still under warrenty but i am not sure where to go or what to do in order to repair it.
The problem: Around two months ago I noticed the fan running very loud and also the laptop becoming very hot. Now it runs so hot the laptop switches itself off completly. The heat being fanned out of the laptop is so hot! burns your my infact.
Has any one any advice they could offer me.
Thanks
JamesHi James
You wrote that you have the notebook under a year so my questions is did you already clean it?
The notebook should be cleaned every 3-4 months and I do this every 3 months. Every time I do it Im wondering how much dust comes out and after this procedure the notebook is a lot of cooler.
Here is an interesting Toshiba article about this:

Compressed air spray is really useful and you should check it yourself!!! ;) -
27'' iMac fan running very loud?
I recently had to have a logic board and a video card replaced under Applecare, (get it, I have always needed my iMacs fixed). I have 'Carbonite' installed as backup. My activity monitor (when Carbonite is running) is showing that Carbonite is really working the 4 cores of the processor. Between 75 and 99%. My fan NEVER ran really loud before on this iMac, or my last two iMacs. I have used Carbonite as a backup for the last three years. The reason for the logic board and video card burning up MAY have been that the fan did NOT come on.
I'm going through a lot of phone calls with Carbonite to see if they have any answers. In the meantime I'm disabling Carbonite. So far the loud fan is not coming on.
Does anyone else have the problem of a very loud fan running? And why do you think that is?Hello, let's see some temps & fan speeds please.
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

I am wondering if anyone has had or heard of the fan in a 24" iMac suddenly running quite loud? My computer is a year old and today I turned it on and it sounds like a desktop DELL!! The fan is so loud. Is this an ugly monster rearing it's head? or is this a minor issue that might go away?
Please help.
CheersIt probably means the computer thinks it is overheating. Maybe it is overheating. As Miriam suggests, intense computational activities generate heat. Possibly dust has accumulated on the inside, or where you are positioning the computer is blocking the flow of air. If the software that controls the fan is not working properly the default mode is to run the fan at full speed. Have you run disk utility to verify your drive to check all seems okay?
Alternatively the computer just thinks it is overheating. There are also hardware analysis tools that come on the disc with your Mac.
There's third party utilities that report temperatures, but Apple says you shouldn't reply upon these, and take your computer to a service center.
This isn't one of those liquid cooled CPUs is it? There was a post about one of those overheating recently and the guy found the coolant had leaked and left a puddle under his computer.

Mac Mini Fan Running Very Loud
Hello,
The other day whilst play Rome: Total War I noticed the fan on my Mac Mini (bought new in 2012 with fusion drive, quad i7 2.3GHz, 8GB Ram) was blowing a gale. I downloaded MagicanPaster to monitor the Mac Mini and this occurred every time I played RTW, or when I exported a file on iMovie. I know a bit about computers, but not anything about technical stuff so wanted to check that my Mac Mini was behaving within "normal" parameters. The MagicanPaster reported the following whilst exporting an iMovie file:
CPU
- 15% system usage, 58% user usage
- 260 Processes
- 1632 Threads
RAM
- 300MB Free
- 2.3GB Inactive
- 2.5GB Active
- 1.2GB Wired
Hard Drive
- Read 75MB/s
- Write 656 KB/s
Temperatures
- CPU 97oC
- Disk 32oC
The Temperature of the CPU is my biggest concern, but like I said I don't know if that's just what happens when using iMovie.
Thanks for any help,

I have the same Mac mini as you do but with 16GB of RAM. Normally in a room with an ambient air temp of 41℃ the average temperature of the four CPUs is around 55℃.
You actually keep your room 'normally' at 105 degrees fahrenheit, the equivlent of 41℃ ?
No the room temperature is more like 74℉ but the ambient air sensor in the Mac mini "sees" a temperature of 41℃ in its immediate vicinity which is inside the Mac mini enclosure. 105℉ is more like the Outside Air Temperature during the summer here in Texas. -
My Macbook Fan Is Running Very Loud...
My fan has been running very loud for the past week and I'm not sure whats wrong with it.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If the fan is working all the time, it looks like a sensor problem.
Run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Plug the MacBook Pro to its charger, choose your language, tick the box to run an extended test and start the test. If at the end of the test you see an error, copy it here.
It's probable that this is a sensor problem, but if the problem doesn't happen during startup, it would be a process which is consuming your CPU. Open Activity Monitor, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and order processes by CPU. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU than the others? -
My fan is running very loud...Not sure what the problem is..Does anyone have any suggestions?
If it is your fan, the cpu is working very hard.
1. check with Applications/utilities/Activity Monitor, <all processes> , click the %cpu column, what process is running more than 50%?
2. install the widget iStatPro (free), clik the Dashboard: iStatPro will let you see the CPU usage, the temperatures, and the fanspeeds.
If there is a process that is "eating" the cpu, in activity monitor you can quit that process. Check in System Preferences/Accounts Login Items tab, if it is there, delete it there. Restart the system. -
MacBook Pro running very slowly - please see EtreCheck report
My MacBook Pro (mid 2012 model) has become very slow and unresponsive recently. Pretty much any click or command I make there is a delay, and often the coloured spinning wheel appears for a few seconds until it executes the command. Very frustrating. I know this is a popular question, but I've pasted my EtreCheck report below, s others have done. Any tips on what I should do would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Why is my fan running so loud?
I purchased my 13" macbook pro about 2-3 weeks ago, But have noticed just recently my fan running quiet loud and constantly. I have done two smc resets that didn't change anything, checked my activity monitor to find nothing wrong, and checked my exhaust rpm and temperatures which were perfectly normal. Does anyone have any other information that would help me fix this frustrating problem?

You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years. You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired. -

One of my fans is very loud, while the other one isn't, is this an issue?
Hello there, Snake97.
The following Knowledge Base article provides a great step for fans running at full speed:
iMac: Fans run at full speed after computer turns on

In order to correct the issue, reset the SMC. Your iMac should now start up and operate as expected.

Mac mini fan is very loud when watching a dvd
Hi,
Just bought a Mac mini (2GBRam 2GHz intel) and when watching a dvd the fan spins very loud which gets very annoying! Is this normal for watching dvd's on the Mini as I have a Macbook with similar specs and there is not much sound from that when watching dvd's. I installed 10.5.1 on the Mini and the Macbook still has 10.4.11...Any ideas? The reset is always worth trying, just in case the problem is in the system controller. However, I'm not sure that I'd blame MacOS itself for the problem, because it does not appear to be similarly reported elsewhere. As such, I'd say that if you can't resolve this with a reset, you may find the next best option is an erase and install of Leopard, followed by downloading and installing the 10.5.1 update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1051update.html
Of course, since an erase and install wipes the hard drive, it is essential you back up your data before you do this! -
By using iPhoto an Switch, the fan become very loud.
Hello.
I have the brand new MacBook Air 2013, with Intel i7.
Now when i using iPhoto an Switch, then the fan become very loud.
In iPhoto i have the problem, when i look for photo's.
When i change the bitrate of an mp3 in Switch, than the fan speed up i make a lot of noise.
I have make an SMC reset, but the problem is still there.
Anyone with the same problem, or have a fix for this.
Thanks. You fan operates when a temperature threshold is reached, it sounds as if there is a slight noise, that one of the locking screws that bolts it is vibrating against its screw-hole or the board.
Call apple or go to the store and see about an exchange, I dont know how loud it is on your machine, but it should not be "making a lot of noise". Its sounds like an off balance bearing in the fan hub,......but without hearing it, i cant determine if its THAT problem, or merely a bolt rattle holding the fan assy. in place -
My powerMac G5's rear fans are very loud?
Hi, I recently got a mint condition Dual 2.0 GHZ PowerMac G5. The computer boots perfectly, it's very fast even though it's got only 512MB of ram and so far, it has never crashed, I'm even posting my question with this computer, however, the rear fans are very loud, they're revving very quickly, and if I want to put it to sleep the fans are still very loud and it won't wake, I have to restart the machine. Does anybody how to fix it? I already reseted the PMU, I cleaned the entire computer with air, updated all the way to 10.4.11 since it had 10.4. Another thing I found was that when I opened the case to clean it, I noticed that a plug was loose, right near the ram. I have no idea where it should be connected or what is it for and I don't know if it's related with my problem, but I uploaded a picture of the cable to see if anybody knows where it should go.
Amed wrote:
Thank you for being quite helpful, and like you said, I checked the diagnostics on system profiler and I also got that it passed on diagnostics. I also checked my computer using techtool deluxe, it said that my CPU was working properly so I'm pretty much in doubt now. What do you think I should do next?
OK, your comment above in the singular is puzzling, and going back to your post with the System Profiler snip shows Number Of CPUs as 1. You should see the following, if both CPUs are recognized:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
So the question is why is one of the CPUs not showing up? The system log listing points to a mismatch, which may simply mean that a thermal calibration needs to be run, but if the problem is only dealing with thermal calibration, both CPUs should show up in System Profiler. Since I haven't used Tech Tool since the days of Classic Mac, I am not familiar with how it reports things like a "missing" CPU, for instance.
Not sure whether we are dealing with a truly dead CPU here, a "wrong" CPU, or what. You can compare the EEE numbers against what should be compatible, for instance (see the DV Warehouse discussion of EEE numbers on any of the 5 CPU product pages, plus the listing of some G5 CPU modules for more information).
Finally, you can actually narrow down your model (there are two iterations with the same reported 7.3 designation) by inputting the serial number to the Chipmunk site model lookup and know for sure. -

Mar 26, 2015, 08:20:29 AM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/plugin-container_2015-03-26-08 2029_[redacted].crashI’ve tried running 10.10 on quite a few different computers with 4GB of RAM and a standard mechanical hard drive and all of them performed worse with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks (10.9). And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money.
