MacBook for field-/location audiorecording (film & video)

Searching for tips about a recording setup for field/location use. My purpose is to record 4-5 wireless + 1-2 boom mikes in the field. The ability to timestamp files by incoming TC would be a strong plus. Also syncing to the cameras sync/blackburst videosignal.
Currently using a 4-channel ENG-mixer sending 2 tracks directly to the camera. Feel that 4-track DAT is stable and sturdy, but way too expensive.
My thoughts about this is a MacBook (not purchased yet!) and a Metric Halo I/O 2882 firewire interface (yes, I got this one!). Recording software could actually be anything - this is just for raw recording - no editing/mixing/plugs. Recording will be done in 24-bit/48kHz mode. No more than 10 tracks simult. This seems to me to be a rugged setup, but I still got no TC reading option (?!?). Any tips? Is the MacBook sturdy enough to bring into cold and rainy weather, dusty fields and warm synny days?? Any experiences?

it too have been eyeing boomrecorder, or its more expensive and more feature / cluttered? competitor metacorder. you can dedicate a track for LTC timecode or if you are running with a camera that does not have TC, you can even run you Mac in free run TC and use it as a "slate" in front of the camera, as it displays numbers, scene, take, etc... it syncs by continuous LTC timecode feed, but if for any reason it loses sync, it will freerun until sync is regained.
for field recorders, however, do you need it portable, as in rigged onto a harness/bag, or is it going to be carted? AC powered or DC powered?
The MH 2882 and a MacBook/Pro would be inherently DC powered, and a viable solution. I personally strap everything up into a harness and wear it on my chest, so Apple does not have a computer with an appropriate form factor for me to run boomrecorder on. To bad, because that would solve all of my needs.
The next best things seems to be the Sound Devices 744t, which supports any standard 2.5" hard drive, flash card, and supports simultaneous recording to both formats for security. BWF, TC in and out, 4 drives, which is fine by me. in your case, you would have to mix several mics to tracks, and personally I would be more comfortable to track all mics to their own tracks for more flexible editing in post... also you'd have to bring some external gear to the mix since i think the sound devices only has 2 built in mic pres.
I wish that Apple would come out with something like the Sony UX1. only downside is that it does not have firewire, except on the optional dock, and it only runs XP, so no boomrecorder or metacorder. come on apple, don't make us wait anymore for a tablet or UMPC killer!

Will a 800fw to thunderbolt adapter cable work? I understand that using a USB port connection is not fast enough for video editing. I read somewhere the G Drives don't connect well to MacBook Pro.

    Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
    Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
    Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
    you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

    When you open the project, it should ask you where the first file is located. After you tell it where it is, it should be able to find the rest of them if they are located near the first one.  Then save the file.  If you move the files again, you will have to relink them again.

  • I am 12 and want a 13 inch Macbook for video editing and stuff I cannot do on my iPad.

    I need a Macbook for video editing and stuff I cannot do on my iPad (flash web browsing, iMovie or Final Cut Pro for YouTube, small games, photoshop, Reaktor 5, etc). I was thinking of buying the MacBook Air 13" refurbished intel core i5 for $999. I can pay up to $1,300 so I was thinking of getting the 13" MacBook Pro with retina display refurbished intel core i5 for $1,260. But then I couldn't buy many accessories or AppleCare. I do not really want to buy the non-retina MacBook Pro because it is not as portable and I am only 12 but I don't know much about how heavy it is because there is no apple store where I live but this is why I came here. So which MacBook should I buy? (I am probably going to wait until the new MacBooks in June 2013)

    Congratulations on your upcoming graduation and the really wonderful gift you anticipate from your parents. Unfortunately, I am unable to give you information about upcoming Apple products or promotions, as I honestly don't know.
    All my purchased music, and games, and videos, etc are on the computer I am currently using. Is there a way to transfer all of it to my new MacBook I will be receiving?
    If the computer you are currently using is a Mac, yes, it can be transferred. One of the difficulties with the new MacBook is that it does not have any firewire ports, which will make networking a bit of a pain, but it can be done. Post back after you have your new computer with specs and we will give you directions on how to do it.
    And are they going to make a new Macbook? So should I wait?
    While I do not have any specific information about upcoming products, it is fairly certain that Apple will be coming out with new products. Of course this is a continuing process so you can be waiting for a long time. I would, personally, go ahead and get one now, and that should certainly see you through college. By then who know what wonderful products will be available!

    Ziatron is correct that Flash does not work on an iPad, but it does work on a Mac. See Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.160.

  • Best MacBook for Creating Video

    I need help choosing the best MacBook for creating sports videos using either iMovie or Final Cut.  I currently us a Mac Mini but I want to purchase a laptop to be more mobile.

    Any layer may be replaced with new footage by simply selecting the layer you want to replace in the composition, then selecting the new footage in the project panel, then holding down the Alt/Option key and dragging the new footage to the composition.
    If you want to automate the process of replacing footage you'll have to use a script.
    If you want to use a project as a template then simply copy the template file in it's folder and paste it into a folder that contains the same structure as the template. IOW, the folders should look like this:
    Template Project
         >template.aep
         >Footage
    New project
         >copiedtemplate.aep
         >Footage
    Your footage has to have the same filename as the original template project.
    You can also save an AE project as a template (aet) project. That's what they are doing on siges like Video Hive. The template isn't easily overwritten so it maintains the work. Then you simply add your footage using the first technique that I talked about.

I have mapped the IBIPFLOC for functional location but it doesn't have any address fields. So how to load the address fields of functional location thru LSMW direct input method. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Praveen,
    You can create a separate LSMW for this or you create a LSMW for FLoc upload along with the address details. I don't think this is possible with the standard program you have chosen.

    Did you try viewing the video in a different browser? Firefox or Chrome maybe?

  • I have the newest imovie as i got a macbook for christmas, i have made a video and want to upload it to youtube and it is a quicktime file, but yet it is still taking ages to upload and youtube says if i change the format it will take less time,help?

    I need help for how to upload a video on youtube when it is a quicktime file but how i change it to a streamable format in order for it to not take as long to upload, how do i do this?

    I have the same issue.  If you are exporting from iMovie version 10.0.1, I run into the same issues if I export directly to YouTube or if I export to file then upload to YouTube.
    Google's help file doesn't properly address this problem and thier help is also out of date.  In talking to a support rep at Apple, they said the export to YouTube should just work or the exporting to a file then uploading otherwise it's an issue for Google support.
    If someone can post a solution that works (is a streamable format - which is different than the format that YouTube accepts as it will accept many formats but take a long time to process them), I'd be interested to hear also.

    However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
    This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
    Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
    If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
    Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

    I'm also getting some really bad sound quality on facebook notifications. I've been forced to disable them they sound horrible like they are clipping.
    Trying to figure out if this is a problem on all Late 2013 15" macbook pros or if mine is defective? This occurs even at around 20-30% volume levels with the Facebook notification sound problems...

  • BADI for storage location restriction in IW32

    Dear All,
    I am working on one scenario in this user has to get the error message :-
    1. Whenever he doesn't enter the Storage Location in Component Tab (in IW32) and also he should not be able to save the Maintenance Order.
    2. There is ZTABLE (ZTPM058) , if there is no entry of the Storage location in the ZTABLE then also he should get the error.
    I have used the BADI BADI_DI_PCS2_1 to do this but the problem is when the user enter the component manually then it works fine , but when he selects the component from List button (it is in the bottom of the component tab screen) , then this BADI doesn't work correctly.
    Basically when the user selects component from List  then it should first put data into the component tab and then give the error . but this is not happening.
    Please suggest what can be done.

    Also maintain in OMJ8 and in material master under MRP2 view the default storage location in the field "Prod. stor. location"

  • Process_order api - Validation Failed for Field Bill To

    I am relatively new to the EBS world and I'm having some issues with calling the OE_Order_Pub.Process_order API. When I call this API I am getting a return error of "Validation failed for field - Bill To".
    For a background...I have an APEX application where users can choose parts from a small part master list to add to an existing order. The existing order will not have a status of Closed or Cancelled and there will be atleast 1 line in the order before the new parts are added. The parts will be added as new lines to the order with some of the new line data defaulting to the same information as the first line. I am using EBS version 12.1.3 with a multi-org setup. It seems that the orders under one org (id=3) are working fine, but another org(id=569) they never work and keep getting the error. I am setting the context to the org of the order and initializing the apps user information with the responsibility "Order Management Super User".
    Do you have any idea what could be wrong or how I can debug the error to get a little more detail?

    hi i m doing e-learning project. i have to capture video from webcam and voice from headphone and send to client.
    but my code is working fine for either one at a time.
    DO i need some extra hardware interface for receving both Audio and video. im using code AVTransmit and AVReceive found from this site only
    After running TX
    i give Dsound:// & vfw://0 in Media Locater only sound is received and no vedio
    and when i give vfw://0 in Media Locater only live video is transmited.
    im using JMF1.1.2e.

    I do this all the time, I put my MBP to a 60 inch Sharp. If you have the video working do the simple thing first. Check to make sure your sound is on your TV and Mac. Then if that doesn't work go to System Prefrences and under sound go to a tab called Output and see if your TV is listed and if it is change it to that setting
