Macbook for Uni - Which one?

Okay so first I apologize if I have posted in the incorrect area.
So soon I shall be going to Uni, and I am looking at purchasing a macbook for college, but unsure of which one, I have my eyes set on the rMBP starting at £999, I will be paying for this on finance also.
Anyways my use case will be
Word documents
Software development
Networking
Emails
Steaming
So which computer should I get, the rMBP or a Macbook Air (1.4Ghz 8GB RAM 128GB SSD)?
I ideally need very good battery life, light weight and reasonable speed in compiling and general system performance.
Many thanks!

The 13" Retina model is going to be a more powerful machine - but the Air is certainly going to be lighter and have better battery life. If the maximum of portability and battery life top your must-have list, go with the Air. For better performance, and still lightweight and decent battery life, go with the MacBook Pro.
Good luck - hopefully you'll get some more opinions!

  • Junked old macbook for a new one. changed apple id password from a different mac. i want to login and it asks for name and password. no matter what i type i cant seem to login. any way help?

junked old macbook for a new one. changed apple id password from a different mac. i want to login and it asks for name and password. no matter what i type i cant seem to login. why cant i just enter my apple id and password. or is there a way to change whatever name and password are on the new one from another mac so i can login. anything helps...thanks

Just open System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock the preference pane with your root password.
Set the New Account to be an Administrator and fill in the rest of the data and then click "Create User".
I would suggest using this user to be YOU with admin capabilities. I wouldn't use the root user - too much damage could occur if you're not sure what you're doing. If you have files, etc., that you want to move to this account, simply but them in the Shared folder - or if you 'rescued' some old files and the like from your 'trashed' MBP, you can put them in your NEW admin account folders.
Hope I've explained myself well - call back with any questions!

  • AirPrint vs. Printer Software for Macbook Pro? Which one is best?

I know I use Airprint for my mobile gadgets, but when setting up a new HP officejet printer in system prefs for my Macbook Pro and my Macbook Air, I have a choice between using Airprint as the driver OR using HP Printer Software specific to my printer as the driver.....which one is best to use?
    Thanks much for your help.

Thank you for the response. I suppose I can try each format, but was hoping for a quick answer and possibly some information about differences between the two that I might not readily notice.
I am trying airprint now and notice no difference in speed to print, but do notice that there are different printing choices in the print dialogue box.

  • Can I exchange my MacBook for a new one?

Ok, so my Dad bought a MacBook for me yesterday, and he wants it now. But he doesn't want mine, he wants a new one. He wants to exchange my one-day old MacBook for a new MacBook that is exactly like mine, cept still in the box. Is this possible? Or would I just have to return mine and buy a new one?

In the United States, you can return your new computer (as long as it was not custom-configured at the factory) for a refund for any reason up to 14 calendar days from the purchase date. Apple will charge yo a 10% restocking fee for doing this. If your computer was purchased online and custom configured (added RAM, a larger hard drive or pre-installed software), then you cannot return it for a simple refund. You can find the complete sales policies here:

  • Can i turn in my trade in my old macbook for a new one ?

Cani trade in my old macbook for credit towards a new one ??

No, Apple does not accept trade-ins.

  • Would Apple exchange my Macbook for a new one for free?

Will Apple exchange my Macbook for another without having to pay the '10% Restocking Fee'? It has been under 2 weeks since I've bought my Macbook. The reason I want to exchange it is because:
Ever since I've installed the latest updates, my Macbook has been performing like a 1980 computer, not a 2007 computer. Since I've installed the updates, it has:
1.) Loading pages on the internet has slowed down by ALOT. I mean it takes about 20 seconds to load the Apple.com page.
    2) My download speed has slowed down to about 60/KB per sec. It used to be about 600/KB per sec.
    3) Videos take FOREVER to load, as if I had dial-up. I have Cable Internet.
    4) Games I play lag WAY more then they did before the updates. A game has even froze. It never used to do this.
Would Apple replace my Macbook for free? And is it worth returning, I mean, Would a HD format or something fix my problems?
I've tried emptying the cache, trying Firefox, resetting my PRAM, and nothing seems to work totally.

This is the returns policy for the apple store online. So provided its within the 14 days you should be able to get a refund. Take a look at the policy below.
    Dib.
[7.1 If you are not satisfied with any Product or the terms of any entitlement to Services you have purchased from us, you may return the Product to us or cancel the entitlement to Services and obtain a refund of the price of the returned Product or Service entitlement if you contact us within 14 Calendar Days of delivery of the Product or entering into the contract for the purchase of of Services. If you choose to return a product the transportation charges set out in paragraph 7.2 paragraph D below will apply.
However, you may not return a Product and claim a refund if the Product concerned is:
    a) Software which we supplied to you sealed and unused and you have broken the seal or which you have successfully downloaded from the AppleStore website; or
    b) a personalized iPod with an engraving made in accordance with your specifications.
You may not obtain a refund for a Service if you have commenced use of the Service.]

  • Watch HULU on HDTV - iMac or MacBook Pro? Which one should I use?

I have this dilemma which computer would perform better on streaming video from the net. I wanna drop the cable company so I have been looking to buy a converter to HDMI with AUDIO included like this: http://www.brilliantstore.com/hdmicables_dekcell_cpa1454.html
    or like this:
    http://www.kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495
but can't make up my mind if I should use the iMac or BMP and they have different video output (Mini-DVI/Mini Display Port). So I could use some feedback on which one you think would handle the project better (speed, resolution... etc.) or if it's make any difference at all, for specs please look below.
    Thank you!

The Imac and you don't need any converter.

  • Blu Ray Drive for W500 - which one?

This my first post! I have a W500 (4058), 64-bit Win7, 8GB Ram. I have seen multiple blu ray drives for the W500, so I'm not sure which one is best (or even what the real differences between them are). Here are the FRU that are supposedly compatiable with the W500: 1.) 43N3215 2.) 42T2538 (or 42T2539) 3.) 43N3230 Any one have any of these? Any problems with locating the drivers, etc? Thanks.

An additional question that should be asked is this:  What is the height of the various Blu Ray drives?  Are they 9 mm high or 12.5 mm high? There has been a lot of discussion about the UltraBay disk caddies not properly filling the UltraBay slot on the W520 because they are not high enough to fully fill the UltraBay slot. Michael

  • Compress video for DVD which one?

I have almost 9 hours video (instructional DVD, I have 6 units). I wonder if I use two dual layer to fit 9 hours. Possible? I use FCP Compressor. Which setting that will be good quality and same time to fit two dual layer? Should I use Sorenson software (I don't have one)? I know Compressor has many settings to select but not sure which one. Do you think will it fit 2 dual layer dvd? Thanks

If you use the 150 minute dual pass preset you can put that much on a simple menu'd DVD I know... But that's 4.7 gigs - a dual isn't twice that size, it's 8.5 gigs.. A VBR will vary a bit in size, depends on movement in the frame...

  • Did you get a case/sleeve/briefcase for your new MacBook Air? Which One?

I'm wondering what is any case/sleeve/briefcase others bought for their new MacBook Air. I'm in the market, and feeling overwhelmed. If you've bought anything to carry/protect your Air, can you post the make model, and price? thanks!

I had been looking for a case / sleeve for my MBA 11" since I purchased it about two weeks after it was released. Today I re-visited Best Buy and they had a Targus 12" Netbook Slipcase that fits the MBA 11" just about perfectly. The Slipcase is 12.4" x 0.79" x 9.65" on the outside and 11.7" x 1,5" x 8.3" on the inside for the laptop. The MBA slips in the case with no need to squeeze it at all. There is no extra room on the side, but it fits beautifully. The top of the case has only about an extra inch or less. This is the best solution that I have seen thus far. It can be purchased for under $30.

  • Internet security applications for XP - which one?

I'm about to do boot camp and add XP. Once I've turn the machine into a windows PC I'll need to have some anti-virus, firewall and all that. Don't trust XP's own offering.
Which is the most compatible internet security application when using Boot Camp and/or VMware Fusion? Has anyone got an 'avoid this' recommendation?
    Thanks for any ideas.

For 10 yrs I've said, "avoid Norton" but I have to admit that Norton Internet Security 2008 really is good, a complete ground-up rewrite and works very well and I'm not even aware it is there unless I want to. Working.
AVG Suite was annoying, in your face, and why I had to find a replacement. It just bogs system down and always asking or telling you and wants to put a notification up (which goes away after 30 seconds).
Real-time AV applications - for viral malware.
Do not utilize more than one (1) real-time anti-virus scanning engine.
Disable the e-mail scanning function during installation (Custom
Installation on some AV apps.) as it provides no additional protection.

"...Windows Defender did excel in behavior-based protection, which detects
changes to key areas of the system without having to know anything about
    the actual threat."
A clarification on the terminology: the word "malware" is short for
"malicious software." Most Anti-Virus applications detect many types of
malware such as viruses, worms, trojans, etc.
What AV applications usually don't detect is "non-viral" malware, and the
term "non-viral malware" is normally used to refer to things like spyware
    and adware.

  • Iwork or appleworks or office for Mac - which one?

I have just purchased a Mac mini - my first Mac ever! My first surprise was that it didn't come with bundled software, no word processor, no spread sheet, no outlook (or equivalent). it does have something called ilife but i haven't found out what that does. My needs are simple; all I want is to be able to access my emails through something like outlook, write letters and use a spread sheet. My husband also bought an apple so it would be good to be able to sync our emails as we use the same address. iwork doesn't have spread sheet functionality and neither provides an environment for accessing / sending emails nor a sync capability. Appleworks seems to have some issues with future support and doesn't provide the email / sync options. office for Mac seems to have some issues with functionality (cf microsoft office). Does anyone have any solutions that are not going to cost me more than the MAC itself?

When Apple created a distinctly consumer line of computers it began bundling AppleWorks and a few other programs (which varied from time to time). I’m surprised that Apple has chosen to replace AppleWorks with an incomplete iWork product and stop bundling.
iLife is the package that includes iTunes (for organizing your music), iPhoto (for organizing your digital photographs, iMovie (for editing your movies), and iDVD (for creating your own DVDs from your own music, movies, and photos). It is an incredible package but, of course, doesn’t include word processor, spreadsheet, or database. But you have missed Mail, a very powerful email program. Give it a look.
AppleWorks isn’t going to be supported any long, that’s true, but it currently works quite well and while it isn’t going to be supported in the future, if you found it in a bargain bin it would be well worth getting. Mariner Software makes Mariner Write and Calc and bundles the 2 for under $100. I’ve used both. Does Microsoft sell a student version of Office in the UK? If you have a student in the household you have a legitimate right to buy it. Office might not be available in an Intel native version yet (Universal Binary) but I’m aware of no problems - I’ve been using it with my mini for over a month. RagTime is an all-in-one product like AppleWorks and is offered free for non-commercial use. As such it is well worth the time to download and test out.
