MacBook forgetting settings after restart

Hi. I have a very annoying problem with my MacBook Pro 2012 model. Since I updated the MacBook to OSX Mavericks, It has been acting wierd. Every time I restart it, the trackpad and the dock settings resets theirselves. So for example if I add a program or move around some icons in the dock, it resets when I restart the computer. Same with the magic trackpad. Every time I restart the computer, all settings resets. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with me not having the proper file permissions. I have reinstalled OSX and I have tried the disk repairing tool but neither of it worked. Anyone have any ideas? I'm willing to try anything. This is so annoying!

It seems nobody in the world got this problem...

  • Lose airport settings after restart

After restarting powerbook, airport settings are changed and can no longer use bonjour printer or see airport express. As instructed by Apple, if I throw out system configuration folder and restart computer, it works fine again until it is shut down, then same problem. There must be a better answer!

I'd love an answer to this, I've had this problem for a while now

  • MacOSX forgetting Magic Mouse settings after restart

    Hello together,
since today my MacOS X (MacBook Pro, 10.6.6, early 2011) seems to forget my Magic Mouse movement settings every time I restart OSX and after waking up from sleep mode. The settings are always put to minimum automatically.
Every time I have to fix it in the System settings.
I have already repaired the HDD access rights and set the Magic Mouse to Favorite. Without effect to the problem.
Does anybody have an idea what could be the reason for this problem and how to solve it?
    Thanks and Regards
    Manuel

    Manuel,
Try going into System Prefs->Accounts. Unlock it. Look in "Login Items" and delete MagicPrefs application. Restart your computer. It worked for me...

  • Macbook pro dies after restart period

    Hi there!
My sister has this macbook pro 13 from around 2010. This morning when i tried to boot the computer after lack of battery had turned it off itself. It started off naturally (perfect sounds etc) but here the strange thing happens; It shows a progress bar below the "progressing wheel" but with no progress in the progress bar and suddenly it turns black.
What i have tried so far but with no luck:
    - Reset the PRAM's - (cmd, option, R and P)
    - Disconnected all battery and power, press and hold the PB for 5 sec and furthermore waited 5 minutes before reconnecting it and restarting it.
    - Ejected the Hard drive and connected it to my MBP Retina 15" to start the hard disk from there, no luck.
Finally i ran the recovery mode and ran the disk utility where i only had the option to control the disk. It came up with something like this:
Re: Open error 5: "Input/output error" on usr/lib/mecab/dic/apple/ja/BE/char.bin Open error 5: "Input/output error" on u…
Open Error 5: as you see.
Think it's weird that i cannot open my normal home drive, but recovery works fine, so it shouldn't have something to do about the hard drive i would think. More likely the directory and the startup folder.. Is there any fix for this problem? Cannot seem to find anything but "Do a clean install"
The thing is that we have a lot of pictures etc. on the hard drive which my sister haven't backed up so she would be very sad if everything disappeared.

    Hi Lkurth,
How many times does your macbook beep?
I found this information from an old Apple support article.
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • 10.6.5 installed, MacBook Air dead after restart

I've just seen a report that somebody killed his MacBook Air with the 10.6.5 update. How does that happen? Is the upgrade safe to install? The report was on trick77.com

I (tried to) update to 10.6.5 on my Macbook Air 11.6" last thursday evening. *Sadly this resulted in the death of the machine*. Despite being connected to mains through out the machine never restarted after the install. *Pressing the power button does absolutely nothing*.
I took it in to the 'Genius Bar' the following morning. The 'genius' told me there was nothing that could be done. A replacement is on its way.
Luckily i had everything backed up so haven't lost any data but it is still a major inconvenience. Because mine was a custom spec (4GB ram instead of 2GB) they were unable to replace it in store - i have to wait probably a week an a half for it to be shipped and delivered.
*_My advice:_ definitely do a full backup before updating to 10.6.5, but if were you i'd wait a while. There's a number of reports of this issue, and there's bound to be more over the coming days as more people attempt to install the update. You can live without 10.6.5 for a week or two, wait until more is known.*

  • Why wont my ibook save my settings after restart?

i have a snow ibook g3 power pc 500mhz, 256mb of ram, 15gb hdd, os x tiger. this is my first mac, i plan on using it as training wheels before i go out and get a macbook air. i have tis problem where i make changes to the dock, short name, time and date, and my wallpaper. every time i restart all of my changes get reseted to what they were before. the only thing that doesnt change is my account name, and when i try to change my short name in finder next to that house thing, it tells me "this name is already in use" though there is no other account. this is really frustrating because i plan on using this wonderful machine when i go back to school, but i want it to be perfect; or very close to. im some what computer savvy, but not when it comes to os x. im using a windows 7 hp and i want to make the switch but i need help.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Changing your short user name via the Finder is a no-no and can cause numerous problems. Use this utility instead:

  • Fcp 6 'forgets' rendering after restart

    Hi,
I'm editing HDV footage captured in prores. Several layers and corrections, hence lot of rendering.
I render everything b4 shutdown, but the next day fcp says everything needs rendering.
Any suggestions what I do wrong?
    KC

    thank you
unfortunatly it doesn't work even after trashing prefs, caches, scratches, everything... the only thing that changed on my computer since the successful renders last week were the screensaver settings. it just finished rendering again with the same problem
i'll try rendering without any filters and starting a new project for the color corrections... see where that leads.

  • ITunes keeps forgetting settings after upgrade to 9.0.3 (15)

My iMac autoupdated itunes and now every time I log on it's as is i'm logging on for the first time, keeps asking me if I want to keep my itunes folder organised etc. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software but the same problem occurs. Also each time I restart itunes it 'forgets' my iPhone is synced as a remote (using the remote app) and I then have to reset this.
No problems with any of this before the update. Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks

You may have a corrupt preferences file.
Quit iTunes. Go to your user account/Library/Preferences folder, locate a file named com.apple.iTunes.plist and drag it to the trash.
Start iTunes again and complete all the setup questions. You should not have to do this again. You will have to go through all the selections in iTunes > Preferences as they will revert to default.

  • Tiger reverts to orginal dock and settings after restart

Every once in awhile Tiger reverts the dock and all my icons back to the original sizes and items. It also makes the icons the default size and bugs the crap out of me. What the heck is going on?

The dock reverts when I have to force restart it (by holding the
power button for 5 seconds.) So...
A hard computer shut down or restart is not good for a hard drive under any platform and having to do so with OS X should be rare. I can't remember the last time I was forced to perform a hard shut down or restart with my PB.
As a first step, I suggest Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.

  • After restart maverick starts in Disk utility and wants to re-install?

For many days, my computer wanted to restart, because off 10.9.3 update. Havent had the time to re-start yet, but today i was forced to because off other problems and my macbook hanging.
After restart, it did not start as normally, but starts in "choose language screen" and moves to disk utility screen after that. Here I can choose to re-install everything or to restore from time machine. I do have a week old backup, but i would rather have my system back up runni g without that.
I have tried pram and smc reset. I tried disk utility repair too. Trying to repair my hard disk (first level called 750.16gb wdc wd750...) i got an error
"Live file system repair is not supported"
Trying to repair second level (under this 750.16 and called disk0s2) i got an error saying:
"Disk utility cant repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Is there something wrong with the update, my hard disk or something else?
If the last change is to restore from time machine, i could try that. But my frien just had a similar problem after changing hard disk, and that restore was not going by the book. (We could onlu restore one user).

If you were to get a copy of one of the utilities that I mentioened earlier, they come with a bootable DVD if your Mac is supported to boot from their DVD.  If not, they would need to be installed on a bootable drive from a working Mac and then you would boot your Mac from that external drive.
If you just want to install OS X from a backup, you will have to format your hard drive before you can reinstall anything to it.

  • Why do my sound output settings keep resetting after restart?

Just bought a MBPro with OS 10.6.4.
After restarting my sound output settings keep resetting to Soundflower (2ch) from Internal speakers.
It doesn't take too much to change it, but it is pretty annoying and I'm assuming there's some obscure setting that can fix this.
    Anyone able to help?

This fixed it on my Mac Pro. It might work on a MacBook Pro.
    Delete these three files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
    /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
    /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Reselect whatever sound device you want as your default in the Sound Preference Pane.
    Restart the computer.

  • MacBook Forgets All Settings

The last couple of days something strange has started occurring on my MacBook. Whenever I reboot, my Mac seems to forget a lot of settings. It forgets what AirPort network I was connected to, my sound volume, the order of my menu bar icons, what icons I have turned off, my display profile, my appearance settings, and probably a whole bunch of other things which I have yet to notice. After the settings are forgotten, I have to manually go change each setting back to its original setting except for one, the color profile. I can't figure it out, but when I bring up the color profile setting, without clicking anything my MacBook instantly remembers.
So what's going on and how do I fix this? I can't really pinpoint what happened when this issue started up. The only thing I notice is my bootup times are now a lot longer. That's about the only thing different. So any ideas on what's going on? By the way, I have tried reseting my PRAM.

I have tried reseting NVRAM. On an Intel machine, reseting PRAM and NVRAM are the same shortcut. I also tried reinstalling the 10.4.7 Combo update. The first time it booted up after installation, my settings were intact. However, each reboot after continued the trend of loosing settings. I have also repaired my disk permissions.
Now playing with the user accounts has been very odd. The second user account so far has not had an issue, but it has shown me something weird with my current user. If I log out and log back in, my settings are correct, even if they weren't when I booted up. If I don't set my user account to auto login, my settings are retained after a reboot when I first log in. I just find this behavior very weird.
Another thing which I have noticed is I'm now loosing certain settings after a sleep. I loose my Airport connection, my sounds, and my appearance settings when I wake from sleep. It's not every time, but maybe 50% of the time.
Any ideas on what my next step should be? Also, does anyone know where these settings are stored? Are they stored in PRAM or the hard drive? Is their a preference file I can just delete and have it recreated on a reboot? Thanks in advance for any answers.

  • I selected restore factory settings on my ipod touch but now after restart it stuck on apple icon what will i do anybody help me out plz, even it's not appering on itunes on my p.c

i selected restore factory settings on my ipod touch but now after restart it stuck on apple icon what will i do anybody help me out plz, even it's not appering on itunes on my p.c

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • After updating to 10.10.3, now my Macbook Pro will not stay logged in. I log in after restarting, and it will stay logged in for 3-5 seconds then immediately log off and go back to the login screen. Any help?

After updating to 10.10.3, now my Macbook Pro 15" (mid-2014) will not stay logged in. I log in after restarting, and it will stay logged in for 3-5 seconds then immediately log off and go back to the login screen. Any help?
By the way, I also updated my Macbook Pro 17" (mid-2009) and it seems to be running fine, though I haven't tried to restart it and log in. I'm afraid I won't be able to get this one to work either if I do.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
