Macbook Forum Post: My Black MacBook is no slouch and beats my Dual 2.5GHz

Hi Everyone,
I jusy came about this post on the Macbook forum and could not believe it. Maybe it's a good thing I did not upgrade to the Quad from my 2.7 dual.

Yes, the Core Duo Macs are fast. That's no secret. They also have small drives, limited memory, limited video and limited expansion.
Whatever replaces the PowerMac is going to be very fast. I'm hoping they'll have more than 4 cores. I'll get one next year, but I'll probably get a MacBook before then.

At startup hold down the Option/Alt key and from the screen that comes up select your OS X partition to start the computer from. Then use the Boot Camp Assistant app to Remove Windows and the partition you reated for it and it will Automatically place the space you allocated for the Windows install back into the OS X partition.
    NOTE:
Do NOT use Disk Utility to erase the partition that was created for the Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant app again to do that.

Getting the black screen on my 6mth old macbook pro. Reboot and nothing happens. It sometimes rebbots by holding down on/ off key. But will go black screen and die a few minutes later. Any help much appreciated.

If you experience distorted video or no video . . . take your affected product to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store to determine which service and support options are available. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
No, it has not cost anything in the past.
Note: as of Dec 7th 2012, it is unlikely products qualify for this extended repair coverage.
That does not mean it's an automatic "no."

  • Whick MacBook (Black or White) show scratches and fingerprints more???

    Hi,
Which color MacBook shows more wear and tear, the Black or the White model?
When I get one, I do not want it to look like H-E double sticks within a week. We have a 12" iBook G3 (VERY OLD...) and it is white and it does have fine scratches everywhere but they are not exremely noticable or bothersome. I'm assuming the white MacBook is made out of a similar material and will eventually look the same as the iBook G3 (It took about 6 years to look how it does now so it did hold up nicely...) So I guess my question is, does the Black MacBook show as much wear as the White model or is it worse? Is the Black worse because of the black iPod scratching hysteria?
    Thanks SO MUCH!

Thank you so much for all of your help everyone! I still have ample time to decide which color I want to get. I am leaning towards the white after seeing that pic of the finger print plagued black MacBook. As I said before, we have taken excellent care of our old, old, OLD iBook and it looks very good considering how antiquated it is. I did not know that pic of the peeling black MacBook matte finish was at an Apple Store. I thought it was his after several days. You really do not know what abuse it might have suffered at the store, but at the same time it could really be peeling because of the quality of the finish. I would say the white one is a safe choice and a better deal, then again black is awesome too!

  • "Error Disk too Slow" Macbook Pro 2011 - Maverick and Yosemite - The Great Grand Mystery Unfolds!!!

    Hey everybody,
Logic Pro X user here, have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, upgraded to 16gb of ram, 2.8ghz intel core i7, running latest version of Mavericks and more recently on a separate partition I tried Yosemite with a  clean install of only Logic Pro X.
I use Apogee Quartet as my audio interface, I have a OWC Mercury Elite Firewire 800 external drive that I record to, all LPX files are on my internal drive.
Before Mavericks I had 0 issues with this setup, no with just one sole drummer track, or one single audio or software track, I get the various disk too slow errors after a few seconds.
I have tried reinstalling LPX, I tried a clean partition with nothing but Logic Pro on it (both Mavericks and Yosemite).
I have reset my PRAM and used Apple Hardware diagnostics as well as memtest (i think it was called) and even reverted back to my old original RAM that came with the computer.  All hardware tests passed, I have verified and repaired disks from disk utility as well as from the recovery partition.
I have worked with Apple a bit over the phone doing these things, I have also read just about every thread on this pervasive issue.  And its ruining my experience as a user.  I absolutely loved Logic on Mountain Lion, no issues whatsoever! I'm considering reverting back to it actually.
On a side note I also have a HDMI Tv connected through the thunderbolt display, and a self powered USB hub that I connect my wireless mouse, iPhone cable and WD MY passport drive (which I only use for Time Machine).
I'm basically at my wits end and open to anybodies suggestions, I even tried resting the SMC and several other things advised in these forums.
I'm Stil under Apple Care and wondering if going into them is my only hope left.
I find that garageband acts the same, but I have no other system issues! its so bizarre, performance on all other programs is totally fine, its only when I want to record that I get issues.
For the record I do have some 3rd party VTS (Arturia V collection, EZ drummer 2 and AMplitube) but when I did the clean partition they weren't there and I still had the disk to slow error, so I'm not convinced its because of those.
Also Since the partition I obviously have played with my storage but I still have 75 gas of space on the mavericks partition (out of 500gb ) and on Yosemite partition I have 125 gbs available and on my Firewire external drive I have about 150gb left on a 500gb drive, so I'm not convinced its a space issue either (especially since before Mavericks Mountain Lion seemed to work just fine.)
HELP! Please help...I'm so exhausted trying to fix this on my own, and admittedly I've run to the end of my own capacity and don't know where to go from here.
Thank you for any suggestions, sorry for the long post, and if I have left anything out please let me know, this is my first post.

And yes I did upgrade my apogee drivers to the recent ones they just released.

  • My blk MacBook wouldn't start and is now stuck in Single user mode

    Hello all-
I recently inherited my brothers old black macbook when he got the new "macbook air" and while surfing the web land safari froze, I tried to force quit- nothing happened. I held the power button until it went off. When I tried to reboot it got stuck on the blue screen with the apple logo and the spinning (loading) circle, it never get to the log in screen. After hours it just becomes a blue screen. After reading forums I tried rebooting in single user mode and I haven't been able to complete the process because i can't enter commands. Here's what the bottom part said i can give the rest if needed:
    +nfs_boot : networking is not initialized+
    +panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002C561D): fsbootinit failed with 6+
    +Debugger called: <panic>+
    +Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)+
*soooo then there were lots of codes after that (let me know if you need them)*
    Kernal version:;
    Darwin Kernal Version 8.11.1
Sooooo I don't know what to do....Please help
I don't have apple care and the nearest apple store is 3 hrs away and I cant get there til monday, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks soo much
    Jade:)

What you've gotten is a kernel panic. There are a few things that can cause this.
The first thing to do is get your hands on the disks and follow my last set of instructions for verifying and repairing your hard disk.
While you wait for them, however, there are a few more things to try:
    1) Hold down the commandoption+pr keys while you turn the computer on. Continue holding them until the Mac restarts a second time. This will reset your NVRAM.
    2) Reseat the RAM modules inside the MacBook. Poorly-seated RAM modules are one of the leading causes of kernel panics at startup. To do this, follow these instructions:

  • Macbook Pro Color Profile and Calibration for Photo processing.

    Hello Friends,
May be it has already discussed in many forums but somehow I got confused about different solutions of the questions and due to this asking once again here.
I am using Macbook pro of 2012 and there exist many color profiles in the Display settings.
I am a photographer who uses Photoshop for the editing as well as Canon Software.
To get the most accurate Monitor Calibration Should I use default "color LCD" profile ?
I am not using any External Calibration tool. I have manually calibrate the screen but somehow I am not 100% confident on that.
In that case should I go for default "color LCD" for my photo processing. I found some light yellow cast/warm color on that profile but I am not sure..
Any help/suggestion will be much appreciated.
I am using:- MacBook Pro + OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5
    Warm Regards,
    Ari...

Which model MacBook Pro? [EDIT] my bad, didn't see it in your original post
You mentioned that there is no error message when you try to change the profile; something is probably being reported to console though. Open Console.app (in /Applications/Utilities/) and see if anything is reported to it while you're experiencing these problems. If so, please post it here and I'll take a look at it.
Are you using the default profile that came with the machine or did you create your own by using the Calibration Assistant?
You might try opening Color Sync Utility (in /Applications/Utilities/) and verify or repair (if necessary) your color profiles.
    Hope this helps....

    Help...

"That guy" (me) does NOT work for Apple. I have never been employed in the computer or technology industry at all, and am now retired and beholden to no one. I've been reading and posting in the Powerbook and MacBook Pro forums here practically every day since 1994/5, and I've seen hundreds and hundreds of posts from people who bought worthless batteries from cut-rate vendors. These clunkers wouldn't take a charge, didn't have nearly the capacity they were advertised to have, never gave a low-battery warning before shutting down for lack of power, never reported their condition accurately (or at all, in some cases), couldn't be calibrated successfully, or were stone dead a month or two after being purchased, when the warranties on them proved to be imaginary because the manufacturer and/or the reseller couldn't be found.
I'm not plugging Apple batteries for machines that can use offerings from other manufacturers; some third-party batteries have consistently proved reliable. But third-party batteries selling for half or a quarter of what Apple charges are being produced with limited (if any) quality control, using components from who knows what Chinese factories, employing workers under God knows what conditions. Some of these batteries miraculously turn out
OK, and if you've gotten one, bully for you. A very large percentage of them (compared to Apple or NewerTech batteries) are duds, not worth even the little one pays for them.

  • Macbook Pro constantly crashing and beeping

Hi all. This is my second attempt at typing this problem out, so I hope it doesn't crash before I'm done.
For the last month my Macbook Pro 15" mid 2010 has been crashing at least 2 times a day. It is not even kernel panics, but good old hard crashes to a black screen. The crash is then followed by 9 beeps: 3 short - 3 long - 3 short.
Not 3 constant beeps which would mean a RAM error, or 3 long - 3 short - 3 long which would be a firmware issue. No, this is litterally a SOS signal, and I have no idea what causes it.
I have upgraded my macbook with more RAM and a 750 Momentus XT drive. My first suspect was the ram because of the beeps, but switching back to the old RAM made no difference. The other suspect was the XT drive which has recieved mixed reviews when used in older macbooks, but switching to a cloned drive has also made no difference.
I have also tried all the old tricks like reinstalling the OS and resetting SMC and PRRAM.
And many of you will probably mention the problem with the NVidea cards in the 2010 Macbooks, but I had mine tested at the apple store my macbook passed the detailed video test, so I hope that is not the problem since I'm way past the extended warranty.
I hope some of you can suggest what to do next.

But what kind of problem are we talking when I have tested two sets of RAM seperatly, ran MEMtest on all of them, and cant find the specific beep sequence on the link you just posted?
I have had the "normal" ram error with 3 repeating beeps on an older mac, and that turned out to be a bad stick. This is not like that.

  • I updated to MacBook pro last night and now safari won't open

I updated my MacBook Pro last night and since I did this I can not open Safari.  It crashes and sends a report to Apple.  Not tech smart enouh to figure it out can anyone give me simple suggestions?

Please elaborate on what exactly you mean by it "won't open".
Do you try to launch it and get an error message from the Finder (for example, something like "This application is damaged and cannot be launched....")? Does an icon for the application ever appear in the Dock when you try to launch it? Does it start to launch and then immediately crashes (Finder will display an "unexpectedly quit" dialog)? Or does it start to launch and never seems to "finish" launching (in other words, it basically hangs and is unresponsive)?
If the application crashes, please post the contents of the crash log here.
Otherwise, if the application seems to be hanging, can you, before attempting to launch it, open the Console.app application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder), and see if anything is reported when you attempt to launch it? If so, please post it here.

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 and the airplay feature does not come up.  it comes up in itunes but not on the menu bar or in the displays settings.  What can i do?

I just bought my macbook pro 2 weeks ago.  I am new to apple so it is pretty much greek to me at this point but I have been able to figure out or google most of my questions.  I have found a million posts about the Airplay feature for mirrioring and most of them are the same issue having a mac that is pre 2011.  There should be no reason I would not have the Airplay option on my system.. I have done the updates avaliable for both the mac and the AppleTV unit, which is a Gen 2 or 3, Also brand new as of 2 weeks ago.  Does anyone know what else I can do or is this something I will have to take in the the Apple Store to fix?

  • Design Limitation On ALL Santa Rosa MacBook Pros, 2.2 and 2.4 GHz

While searching the Internet for answers to my new $2500.00 MBP headphone (output jack) has audible hissing sounds I found several posts on Macrumors.com and macintouch.com to explain the design Limitation/Problem. To summarize:
    The Problem
The issue has three components, as described in this MacinTouch Report:
    - A low hiss that is constant whenever the audio circuitry is on
    - Static that occurs whenever anything is playing... even something quiet.
    - A series of high-pitched noises that occur somewhat randomly. The best comparison I've seen is that it's like listening to those hearing tests where you raise your hand when you hear a tone.
The problem only occurs with low-impedance headphones (more on this below).
    Some Facts
    - The problem occurs on ALL Santa Rosa MacBook Pros, 2.2 and 2.4 GHz. It is a design flaw on Apple's part, and returning your machine for a new one will not help. There are plenty of people who say they can't hear the noise, but those people either have high-impedance headphones or speakers, or just don't have very good hearing.
    - Only Santa Rosa MacBook Pros seem to be affected by this particular static problem. I've seen some reports of other machines having audio issues, but they are always different.
    - The 'Audio Update 2007-001' that Apple released about two weeks ago doesn't fix it. It does fix a popping problem on all Intel Macs (including the SR MBPs), so it's worth installing, but that is a different problem than this one.
    - It does seem to be an Apple-specific problem; I've been unable to find any other reports of non-Apple Santa Rosa notebooks having the same problem.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their new MBP?
    Thanks,
    B

I experience the issue as well both in OS X and when I'm in Windows Vista.
Whenever a program uses audio, there is an annoying high-pitched hissing noise from the built-in speakers.
Of course the severity of the problem depends on the individual hearing ability, but everyone I have asked, have been able to hear the noise.
Apple is known to be the first choice of audio professionals; however this problem is below that standard.

WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

I just got my ATD and late 2011 MBP up and running. I've not tried running without the power adapter from the ATD plugged in, but I just tried and didn't have any problems with the display not waking. You may want to take your query to the ATD forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/peripherals/thunderbolt_display - perhaps someone there has experienced a similar issue.
