MacBook freeze after desktop loads

I repaired permissions, and this still occurs.  I have a new insall of OS 10.7 as I purcahsed a new HD for my MacBook.
Any ideas what would cause this?
Any ideas how to reover or force a reboot when it hangs? Right now I am just holding the power button until the MacBook powers off.

You're responding to a post from five months ago. If that's how long you had to wait for the issue to reappear, it may never be resolved.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

If you hold down the "shift" key on your keyboard when you log in, does the same thing happen?

I used the original G5 install disk to start up the computer to run tool disk, but it can't repair the problem, I have techtool pro and it reports a problem and also says the computer it's corrupted, what should I do.

Unfortunately, no. This is one of my classroom machines, and I don't have the storage capacity to keep them all backed up.

  • Satellite L - LCD monitor flashing black after desktop loads

My LCD monitor has started flashing black at startup. It doesn't do it if I log off and log back in, only on startup. I can log in, the desktop loads and everything looks normal then after about 7 seconds everything goes black, then the taskbar quickly appears then disappears and then the desktop becomes visible again momentarily but goes black again. It repeats this very fast two or three times then starts normally.
Everything seems to be working fine otherwise. I disabled my antivirus so it wouldn't startup but that didn't help. I've done some registry cleaning lately so I restored everything back to well before this started and that didn't help either. I've done a lot of installing and uninstalling of software lately but can't pinpoint anything that might have caused it. This computer is about 2 years old. I have Vista 32 bit, service pack 2.
Anyone ever seen this before or have any ideas what the culprit might be? Really appreciate any advice.

OK, I connected a CRT monitor from another computer and it basically did it too. As the laptop screen was flashing off and on, the CRT screen went black and then came back on when the laptop went back to normal.
I think my graphics card is Intel Display Driver 7.15.10.1502. Does that sound right? I checked for an update through the Device Manager and it said no update is available. The same version is the only one listed at the Toshiba Downloads page. It's included with my Toshiba Application Installer so I'm tempted to uninstall/reinstall, but I'm afraid if it doesn't automatically install at at startup I won't have a monitor. Any advice on this or anything else is appreciated.

  • MacBook freezes after shutting the screen closed down

Since some time ago, my MacBook freezes when I close the screen down for substantial time like a few hours or maybe even an hour, so that I have to kill the MB by pressing the power button for a few seconds. I did this almost everyday for maybe a few weeks now. Perhaps this is the after effects of a fall and there is no cheap cure for it?

Many here have reported no wake from sleep or failure to sleep, running 10.6.3 and other versions, on MacBooks and MBPro's, using Parallels and VMware. Some say deactivating the Sudden Motion Sensor and shutting down Parallels and VMware ,before sleeping, helped.

  • Macbook freezing after waking from sleep

My 4 GB RAM macbook freezes for 30 seconds after I wake it from sleep mode. Sometimes it is unresponsive and sometimes the beachball comes up. I have 200 gigs of free space and no login items. The bluetooth wake is also turned off. What is the problem?

I have noticed similar behaviour.  I think it depends on the network activity being carried out when I closed the lid, and maybe it has to wait for something to time out. I don't really know, I'm just guessing.
I have noticed that when it happens, I have to close the lid and watch the light on the front. This will be solidly lit. When it starts "breathing" I can open my MacBook again and it will work ok.

  • Help: Macbook freezes after sleep and gray screen freeze on startup

I've got a new MacBook (45 days old, minimal usage) and I'm starting to have some problems.
When my computer goes to sleep after inactivity I have a hard time waking it. The screen turns on right away but the mouse/cursor remains frozen. The computer does not respond to any keyboard commands. I usually have to reboot the machine when this happens. I noticed this problem a few weeks ago and it has since become more and more frequent.
I've also noticed that with some regularity my computer freezes on the gray screen during start up and never reaches the mac icon. This has become more and more frequent since I first noticed the initial problem and happens one in every 3 or 4 startups.
I haven't installed any new software except for the regular software upgrades. Nothing extraordinary.
Is it possible that these problems are related? Am I doing something wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The grey screen on startup may be the known issue, especially if you start to get vertical lines on the screen. If you can reboot using PRAM reset, go to the displays control panel, set the resolution to something besides your current resolution, then revert to your original setting. That should fix that part.
As far as the freezing after sleep goes, I had a similar issue where the macbook would not actually go to sleep (white light stayed solid), and opening the lid would result in a dimmed screen that I had to force-shut down the computer to get out of. After sending it in for RSD, this seems to have been resolved.

  • After installing ox lion macbook freezes after start up

so... just like the title says. after installing ox lion on my macbook pro, sometimes it freezes right after start up, and I could not click on anything, and i had to force it to shut down by holding the power button.
I don't know if anybody else have the same problem or not? is it a bug or something? hope it can be solved soon.....

I just don't know if this is showing some sort of problem..
If your Mac boots to the Desktop without freezing, nothing to worry about. The screen color may vary somewhat betweeen one Mac OS X to another.
This can help startup issues also.
Disable the Lion "resume" feature ...
    Open System Preferences > General

  • Macbook freeze after Lion

My Macbook Pro freezes every now and again, especially when using Safari. This happens after an upgrade to Lion.
When I pop out the forced stopping window and give it the command to stop Safari, that window to freezes.
Mouse pointer still moved though, but can't select anything outside the frozen window's scope.
Safari was not running full-screen this time, so the link I suggestede earlier is not confirmed.
Hope This Helps in solving the issue.

I am having the same problem except I get the pinwheel and cant do anything, it just freezes randomly.  However mine freezes upon reboots if i do not leave that box checked that says to reopen windows.  I have to hold the power button down to shut it down then it will come back up ok.  I hope they fix this with a patch soon especially since I had 0 problems before the upgrade

  • MacBook freeze after upgrading the hdd

    Hello,
I have following problem with my MacBook. I have made a upgrade of my harddisk to a 500gb WD Blue Skorpio Harddisk. I made a backup of the old HDD and install the new HDD. After the changing, the computer boot normal. But then he freezes every time for a few seconds.
For Information: The HDD is partition into 2 GUID Tablet Parts. What is your recommandation. It is a problem of the HDD or it is a Problem of my MacBook.
I asked Western Digital for support, but I get no answer. I hope some knows the problem and can help me.

    Hello Jay
    Hello iyacyas
thank you for the fast response due my Problems. In the evening I will try Jays recommendation.
    @iyacyas
The only reason to use two GUID Partitions is, to have a better overview about my files. In the main Partition I have all Mac OS files. The second Partition is for Medial file, like Music, Videos and Pictures. There is the folder of iTunes. I know, I didn´t need such differentiation. But to hold that were a good idea to get a better overview about my files. Sorry I worked too long with windows.

  • My Macbook freezes after using it for awhile

I startup my MacBook (aluminum 2008 verions) running lion 10.7.1 and after about 5 minutes of using it, my computer displays the rainbow cursor and freezes. I am unable to click on anything or force quit.
My processor is 2.4 Ghz and has 2Gb ram.
It would be great if someone could give me any thoughts ASAP as I have an assignment due next week and need my computer.
    Thanks in advance

Your problem is caused by third-party software that you installed. I'd need more information to be more specific.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Macbook freezes after change of wifi location

Finally I can reproduce the freezing of my macbook air. If I change from wifi location for example i go to work from home the following happens:
the MBA will not fall a sleep resulting in a very hot MBA in my bag.
the MBA will fall a sleep but it is not possible to wake it up again
the MBA will fall a sleep and is able to wake up again after opening the lid but now it will freeze the entire mac within 5-10 minutes.
I have to push the power button for a long time in either cases.
I just did a complete restore so i have no extra software installed.
Is repair the only option here?

Can you reproduce the problem after erasing the startup volume and installing OS X, without restoring anything from a backup? If so, the machine needs to be serviced.

  • Macbook Freezes after 4 GB RAM upgrade

I work on many Macs for my company, and we have been upgrading our Macbooks with 4 GB of RAM standard. But this causes the screen to freeze, image to break up into different colors and locks up the whole system.
I thought it was the OCZ RAM we were using, so we switched to Crucial. But the same problem exists, and it exists on over 10 machines so it cannot be that all of this RAM is failing. This must be a problem with the unibodies or with OS X?

Please note, I am fairly new to Mac, and only found this info after much searching on-line...
I also have had problems after upgrading to 4GB of RAM, I bought Kingston from Best Buy in Edmonton, AB. I have spent a great deal of time searching for a solution, and just thought I would share what I have found.
It seems to be an issue with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card and the way it accesses memory, and it seems to affect anything over 3GB of RAM. Now that being said, on Nvidia's website, with some searching there is a pdf document stating which RAM is compatible with this video card. I should mention that this issue also affects MacBook Pro users with the 9400/9600 graphics card. According to the pdf, my Kingston memory is not on the compatible list...I'll try to include this list:
The tables below list the SO-DIMMs that NVIDIA plans to support on their GeForce 9400M G platform.
Note: Using an SO-DIMM from this list does not imply reduced or simpler design validation on the part of the OEM. NVIDIA recommends customers to perform their full suite of memory interface design validation testing on their systems.

The first part is the manufactrer name, next is type of memory, then latency, then density, then part number.
Another solution seems to be to edit the com.Apple.Boot.plist to set maxmem to 3456, which cuts available memory after rebooting to 3.5GB, on my MacBook, I got fair results with 3072, basically 3GB, it doesn't freeze as often, although I haven't played any movies, etc, for a few days, which always seemed to lead to my freezes. But the system seems much more stable for the moment.
Another solution which I am going to test when I get home and have access to my original RAM is to put one of the 1GB sodimms which came with my machine in the first slot, and one of my Kingston modules into the other slot, I've read that this solves the problem completely. Now I realize this leaves you with 3GB Ram, not the 4 I wanted, but further research showed me that the performance hit is not that significant from 3 to 4 GB, There are a couple of websites with testing results for different RAM configurations, and for my needs, the difference is minimal, I know that may not be acceptable to everyone. If I had bookmarked one of these pages, I would include the link.
Another solution seems to be a change to one of the Kext file, link is here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=127611
but this is related to kext for MacOSX on a PC, and I don't know enough about dealing with kext files to feel comfortable doing things like this to my MB.
I don't know if anyone else will find this useful, but if it does, great. In the meantime, I will be able to test the 3GB RAM configuration on Friday, and will test out the MB with movies, etc and post how it goes... one test I read about is to use the program REMBER, and do multiple hard drive searches, etc while it is running, according to the website I found that on, it leads to the freezing fairly rapidly, so at least the problem can be reproducible for those who take their Mac Books or Mac Book Pros into an Apple Genius Bar or where ever so that they can see the freeze in action.
    Cheers,
    Dan

  • Why is my 2011 macbook freezing after unplugging from tv?

Hi Everybody! Ive searched the forums for this but couldnt find anything the same. However, this is my first post so forgive me if i missed an answer to this already.
Lately, i've been plugging my early 2011 13" Macbook Pro (i7 running lion)  into my 1080p sony bravia tv to watch movies or play games. I am doing this using a mini display port to dvi adapter plugged into a dvi to hdmi cable. So far, every time When i'm done using the TV and I unplug the mini displayport adapter from the laptop, OSX seems to freeze solid. It will not respond to mouse movement or key strokes but will respond to a short press of the power button - which brings up the shutdown dialog (i cannot do anything with this since it will not respond to anything else)
Any ideas on what could be happening here?
i've been through the crashreporter logs and there is nothing to be seen.

    markhole wrote:
I will try that this evening. Have you heard of anything like this happening before? or am I just doing it wrong by unplugging the cable? It works fine when I unplug from my monitor using the same adapter but a different dvi cable...
Sorry, but I don't have a 2011 MBP, nor am I on Lion, so I cannot test, but it has always worked fine for me to just disconnect the cable up through 10.6.8. So I don't know if this is a Lion issue, a 2011 MPB issue, a cable issue, a TV issue, some combination of these, or an issue on just your individual setup.

  • HP Device manager for C6100 series on macbook freezes after 1.1.1 update

Okay, I had this same issue on my Powerbook after the hp 1.1.1 update for my C6100 Photosmart printer/scanner and I Googled the answer but didn't save it - I now have the same issue on my MacBook Pro. When I try to scan via the HP Device Manager I get an error "the program may be unstable, it is recommended that the program be closed and restarted"
I know the resolution is to remove the 1.1.1 update but I can't remember how the heck to do this... anyone? Help! I know it's super easy and I'm stuck.
    Thanks all!

That doesn't work. I ended up just using the uninstaller and removing the entire thing and then by the CD I reinstalled it again so it doesn't have the update 1.1.1. Of course it asks if I want to update when the updater runs I deselect it. Now I remember there is a simple way to make it skip this update every time too so I don't inadvertently install it again but I don't remember that simple task either.
