Macbook freezes for around 10 seconds

Hello everyone,
I'm having some problems with my macbook. I bought it about 2 years ago. I have the current Mac OSX 10.5.8 and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM. The problem I've been having has been occurring for about 3 days now and it's where my macbook applications will freeze and give me the "thinking" cursor for about 10-20 seconds. I can still open finder and look through my files and pull op the Dock and select other applications. I'm hoping its just a software problem and someone has a fix for me!
Thanks,
Clint Webb

That sounds all right...look through this link...
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html
You might want to open up 'Activity Monitor' (in your Utilities folder)...select 'CPU' and from the top of that window select 'All Processes'...check to see if something is using too much CPU%
It could also be that your hard drive is getting ready to fail...so be sure to back up anything important...in case..
You can check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utility by clicking on the model of the drive in the left column (not MacIntosh HD) to see if it is 'Verified/Failing'...not a 100% test
Also to check the hardware out in the MacBook take your install DVD1 and hold down the 'D' key while restarting to boot into the Apple Hardware Test (AHT)...run the extended tests..
That is all I can think of right now...

  • Macbook freezes for a few seconds

I have a macbook pro (mac OS 10.7.5). As I use it ,the colorful spinning ball appears for no reason and the mac freezes for a few seconds. When I write something, when i use Itunes ,when i scroll down it happens everytime. I did a format on my hard drive but nothing change. Does anybody know what is going wrong?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Firefox keeps freezing for around 10 seconds and then continueing. My computer does never ever freeze and has good enough hardware so I suspect there is a problem with the software such as the plugins or anything else around Firefox. What can I do?

I have an I7 processor, 6 GB of RAM and a GTX 460 GPU.
As you see it is not a hardware problem.
It happens quite often on several websites.
I do not use a lot of plugins or addons. Actually, I use none. The only ones I have are the ones the browser requires to display content such as Adobe software, etc.

As a temporary get around, dare I say it? I'm using Google Chrome which doesn't have this glitch in it. Been doing so for a couple of days now and no problems at all. I've gone back to Firefox a few times and the two or three second freeze every 10 or 15 seconds resumes, so I'll maybe check Firefox in a few months and see if there is any improvement. Or maybe, I'll be so used to Chrome by then I won't bother.
    Hope this suggestion helps.

  • Firefox freezes for around 10 seconds when loading a video on YouTube

So everytime I'm loading a video on YouTube, it takes a very long time to load (10-15 seconds) and while the video is loading Firefox becomes completely unresponsive. I can't do anything until the video is loaded, and when it takes such a long it becomes annoying.
I have the newest versions of both Firefox and Flash Player.

Does this happen with other browsers as well? If no, maybe an extension is interfering. Here is how you can disable them to test that: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Uninstalling%20add-ons#w_how-to-disable-extensions0-personassf-and-plugins

Thanks for you post, I was under the impression that one of the new macbook pro's comes with 16GB RAM out of the box.
I'll try your solution although I feel like is rather utilise the RAM I've paid for.
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/10462096123 Suggested that it's possibly the new memory compression causing the issues. This seems to fit, because I'm a game developer I tend to have quite a lot of memory intensive applications running.
Will report back if I find a solution, if there are any more suggestions I'm all ears.

After I type in my login details and press "enter" on a website, Firefox freezes for around half minute. This has gone on for around 5 months. I've tried disabling add-ons to my Firefox but they don't seem to affect this problem. My version is 17.0.1.
How do I combat this problem? Many thanks in advance.

    * Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

  • Display turns black for around 10 seconds

I just encounter this problem twice in a day, it happens without any warning:
First the display of my macbook turns black suddenly without any warning and can last for around 10 seconds before wakes up again. During this time, I can hear the noise of hard disc or fan but it seems that the display does not respond to the keyboard. My battery is full and the power adaptor is connected. The power saving is on, but I do not think that is the cause since my finger is keeping moving on the touchpad all the time and the display does not respond to the keyboard as it should when shutting down for power saving.
I was browsing the web before these accident and the model of my Macbook is Macbook2,1; It is 16 months old and runs Tiger 10.4.11.
Currently my macbook function normally but I do not sure if this accident indicates some big problem. I have checked the troubleshooting section but all the related article is about more serious problem. Has any one here ever encountered the same problem before? Does that serious?
Thank you very much for all possible help!

Do you have an Apple Care extended warranty because it sounds like the begining of inverter failure. If it is a bad inverter, that is a hardware failure and can't be fixed with software.

  • Long click to select an alternate tool, the flyout freezes for a few seconds

When I long click to select an alternate tool, the flyout freezes for a few seconds before I can select a tool. How can I fix this? My only work around right now is to know the tool shortcut and then to cycle through it with shift+tool shortcut.
    Thanks,

So I don't know what happened. This has been the case ever since I can remember, but today I got a wacom tablet and now the tablet and the mouse can use the sidebar as normal. All I can assume is that the drivers for the tablet fixed some preference list file error...

  • Every 15 seconds or so my MBP freezes for 10-20 seconds

Hey everybody, I've got a weird problem where sometimes (every couple days or so, and then it lasts until I reboot) my MPB gets in a state where everything stops working except the mouse... No menus, dock, etc, no CPU Use icon in the menu bar. This lasts for around 20 seconds (it varies) and then everything starts working again for a short period before it starts all over again. I have no idea what's prompting this state or what if anything I'm doing that contributes to the problem.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to steps I could take to try to diagnose/fix it?

It appears I'm having the same issue. Everything is frozen for about 5-10 seconds, then back to normal for another 5-10 seconds, then frozen again, then normal again, and so on. I never shutdown my MBP (sleep only), so every 2-4 days I have these strange freezes and I'm forced to reboot in order to restore normal conditions. I'm able to quit all apps and reboot normally, I just have to keep waiting every 5-10 sec frozen cycle has passed in order to enter keyboard commands and mouse clicks.
The problem happens out of the blue and I still couldn't find a valid pattern for me to reliably reproduce the issue. It's really weird, and annoying
I took a quick glance at the console logs and couldn't find anything out of normal.
Regarding the advice given by Allan Jones, I just had this problem and AirPort is off, I'm wired.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Applications randomly freeze for a few seconds?!

    Hi guys,
I have had nothing but trouble with this most recent iMac I purchased 4 months ago. It's the 24" described in my profile. AppleCare came out and recently replaced my faulty HDD, and put a 500gb Hitachi in (replacing 500gb Seagate).
Anyway, for no reason, after a fresh install and all the updates, applications will freeze for a few seconds and show the spinning beach ball- doesn't matter what application (Wow, Safari, Quicktime, Skype, Adium, etc.)- anything! I can see in activity monitor that there is a spike in the disk activity at the time, but cannot explain why. It's a brand new hard-drive! Interestingly, there is no corresponding jump in CPU or RAM access, so it's obviously some kind of data-dump issue with the HDD....the new HDD...
Looking in Activity Monitor, it appears to be the data read/sec that is spiking.
This is extremely frustrating, and I thought the new HDD would solve this, but apparently not. I don't particularly wish to reinstall OSX, and AppleCare in Australia is shut at the moment (midnight)
Does anyone know of a solution, or why it's happening?
I never had ANY of these problems with my first 24" that I bought late last year, with stock everything (hdd, gfx, etc.)....I feel like this one is faulty by nature....
    Thanks!
EDIT: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/showthread.php?t=36763 shows my original HDD issue with the previous HDD....you can see this *****

It has to be the HDD. Calling Apple in the morning...
Sound like that could be a HDD problem. One way to confirm it is to look at the Console application from your Utilities folder. Look at the System Log and Console Log and see if you see any lines with text like "disk0s2: I/O error." at the times when you see the freezes and hear the clicks. Note that the numbers in the disk0s2 part can change, depending on how your drives are set up.

    Thanks, Charles.
Looking at the Console log, it doesn't seem to have any i/o errors. Since both logs are quite lengthy, and the quoting system here is a bit akward, I've linked them:
    Console.log: http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/clip.php?clip=e04
    System.log: http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/clip.php?clip=e06
Couldn't really see anything there, but have a look if you'd like. Looking forward to calling Apple Support today and finding out what the deal is...only just got this new HDD put in!

I am hoping someone can please enlighten me as to why Acrobat 7 freezes for a few seconds everytime the program is started.  If starting the program directly from executing the associated pdf file, the program loads the first page, freezes (stops responding) for approx 6 to 8 seconds, then responds to user interface again.
It is not the machine as I have the same problem on many different machines.  Help please.

Disabling hardware acceleration seemed to solve the problem. Thank you all very much, but before I close this thread as solved, I've always had that feature enabled to the best of my knowledge. Why did it suddenly cause problems?

    Hello, Dthoney.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try closing all opening applications and power cycle the device.  Once this is done test to see if the device becomes responsive.
iOS: Force an app to close

  • AR8 freezes for about 40 seconds after start

    Hi,
I use SuSE Linux 10.0 on a Thinkpad R51 and I installed the 8.1.1 enu rpm version of adobe reader and I use a dual head xinerama display.
    Biggest problem:
Adobe Reader starts up normally and for about 2 secs, it can be used normally. Then, it freezes for about 40 seconds. Nothing is possible in this time. Afterwards, a normal use is possible.
    Minor problem:
Everytime I open a PDF document with the Firefox plugin (FF 2.0.0.6), the plugin seems to be loaded and initialised again. This is very time consuming. In AR7, one had to wait for plugin initialisation only when opening the first pdf document.
Is there a plan to fix these issues? Otherwise, I will downgrade to AR 7.0.
    Thanks,
    Al

    Hi Al,
Could you answer the following questions in regards to your problem, for us to better understand the problem scenarios -
    Regarding your first problem ---
    1. The freeze after launch is happening on "every" launch of the reader, or is it occassional?
    2. When the reader window is hung, do you see any sort of progress bar or alert on the screen?
    3. If you try to launch the the reader from the terminal, do you see any alert/warnings on the console while the reader is hung?
There is also a small exercise we would like you to do, in order to verify a known issue (you would need 'root' access to do the following) -
    * Temporarily rename the folder "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts" (the font folder under /usr/X11R6) to something else (say "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts_dummy").
    * Restart acroread a couple of times.
Do you still see the problem of the application getting hung? Please do let us know your observations. Also don't forget to restore the name of the folder "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts" back to its original name.
    Regarding your second problem ----
The behaviour is basically due to the browser's handling of external plugins. In Reader 7.0 due to some issues, we sometimes missed indicating to the browser that our work was done, and that is why an instance of the plugin persisted.
This was however corrected and in Reader 8 we now correctly tell the browser when the PDF file is closed. It is at this point that the browser should decide whether to keep the plugin loaded or to close and unload it. And it seems that at present Firefox immediately unloads us after the last document is closed.
Anyway thanks for pointing out the problem. We'll take note of it and try to find a workaround to improve the performance in the future release.
    Regards
    Salil
