Macbook Freezes When Connecting External DVI Display

I have a Macbook 2Ghz Core 2 Duo running Leopard (10.5.1). Occasionally (not every time, but fairly frequently), when I plug in my external monitor DVI monitor, the screen will fade out (as it normally does) and then fade back in, but only half way. The machine is then completely frozen -- I cannot move the mouse and no key responses are registered. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button until the Macbook powers done completely.
Note that there are times when I plug the same monitor in and everything is fine.
Has anyone else had this experience?

I also have another strange behavior associated with the external monitor. Sometimes (but not all the time), when I pull out the DVI cable to disconnect the external monitor, the Macbook spontaneously reboots itself.
Anyone else have this experience?
