Macbook freezing and not restarting

Lately my macbook has been freezing when I move my mouse to the dock, and applications won't launch, just bounce. Also, when I restart, it won't restart, icons disappear but it won't go any further. I repaired permissions. Any idea what may be going on here?
processor 2 GHz intel core 2 duo
RAM 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

The restart issue indicates that some application/process is getting stuck while you're shutting down.
In addition to trying Safe Mode, create a new user account, log out of the old account and into the new one. See if things work any better in the new account.
Were you having issues before you upgraded the hard drive? Was the new drive trouble-free for any period of time?

  • Macbook freezing and not working well after Lion installation - thoughts?

    hey guys,
i have a late 2007 macbook running OS X Lion 10.7.2.  It was running absolutely great with snow leopard; seriously i loved it, no complaints or major issues.  I recently bought and installed Lion, but now my laptop is not working correct and freezes ALL the time. seriously i have to turn my computer off every 2 or 3 minutes, 5 or 10 if i'm lucky. programs and applications are also not working so well.
    WHAT COULD THIS BE?
    HOW DO I FIX THIS?
    uninstall lion? reinstall snow leopard?
    PLEASE HELP
    thanks everyone!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Boot in safe mode. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
    Test. Same problem now?

  • PowerBook G4 keeps freezing and not restarting sometimes for hours

I just bought a used G4 and wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled OS X10.4. It suddenly started freezing on me(seems to have been when music started either in iTunes or on a webpage) and so I force quit and when I went to restart it didn't do anything. The caplocks button responded so I knew that there was power. But no fan, no hard drive sound, nothing. When I went to a "genius" to figure out what was up, I pressed the on button and it started. Then when I got home it shut down twice and one other time a bunch of vertical lines covered the screen and it beeped.
I have done everything from removing the battery(which is full and charges fine)to reinstalling the OS, to verifying the disk and repairing the disk. It hasn't done it since yesterday but it makes me nervous. The previous owner bought a new one because the same thing happened to him and when he brought it to Mac911 they said there was nothing wrong with it.
Does anyone know of anything I can do to fix this? Or if I'm just setting myself up for disaster by keeping this system?(I can still return it but I really need it.)
Thank you in advance for any help that you may offer.

Update: Since I had noticed that the iBook booted up more or less normally when cold, I got to the genius bar 40 minutes early and let my computer get good and warm so it would slow down and freeze, which it did. I didn't get a definitive answer from the genius because my computer got so bogged down that he couldn't do much of anything with it. He said to do an erase and install, and if it was still acting the same, it was likely to be a hardware problem and I would need to send it off to Apple for diagnosis and repair.
When I got home, I discovered that I had a disc with Tech Tool Pro which came in my original Applecare package. I decided to run it, and everything passed except that the Surface Scan reported "Failed: Error=-4". I'm not sure just what that means.
Anyway, it might be that your computer was cold when the geniuses looked at it and that's why they didn't find anything wrong.
I actually stuck my computer in the fridge for 20 minutes and then set it on an aluminum plate to help cool it. So far it's been working for about an hour and a half instead of the usual 20 minutes or so, but it's still slow and I get the spinning beach ball more and more. I plan to try an erase and install tomorrow, but I actually don't expect that to fix it since it seems to be temperature related.
If I find out anything more, I'll post back.

    MacBook Pro will not restart.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are unable to get it working using the above, then you will need to try this:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
And, if this doesn't help, then the HDD is failing or has failed.

  • Whenever i try to download OS X Mavericks, it will download to 995.6MB then will freeze and not download any further.

Whenever i try to download OS X Mavericks, it will download to 995.6MB then will freeze and not download any further. I have tried restarting the download a couple of times and still nothing happens. Restarted computer and still nothing. I don't know what is happening or if it is a problem my side or on the apple side of things. I am running quite a powerful computer so i dont think it is the computer that is having problems either.
Help would be highly greatful. Thanks!

    Hi casturrr,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of what you are describing. If your whole system is hanging or freezing completely, and it is occuring during the download and not during the install portion, you may find the troublehsooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

Did you try more than once? If so:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here.

My MacBook pro did not restart after the software update

WHAT??? Now that's a disappointment! I was sure the all-seeing, all-knowing Prof. Kappy would instantly discover the problem thru time and space....
Ok, back to the issue at hand, the Prof. is right. In none of the OP's participation, nor in any of his choir of followers save mommy power is there the least hint of what Apple product is failing. While y'all get a move on and disgorge the details, may want to try a Safe Boot. Hold down the Shift key prior to the startup chime and wait awhile. IF it starts, then it means you have some third-party software that's causing the problem. Else there's a strong probability a complete reinstall will occur in your near future.
In the future and in spite of what some purists may say, be sure to service the system disk BEFORE patching. By "service" I mean booting up the Mac using your Install DVD (Snow Leopard or priors) or booting in Recovery Mode (Command R, in the Lions and successors), running the Disk Utility found in that mode and doing a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions. Until NO errors show up. Cause patching up an already damaged system will only make things worse.

    Many thanks.
That's consistent with an application (other than QuickTime itself) having dropped old QuickTime componentry in your system files.
So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, open the "System32" folder.
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)
