Macbook freezing on wake up

I've had my first macbook pro for about 4 months now and for the past month or two, whenever I have woken it up after it has been asleep for 6+ hours it has made the same noise it does when turning it on and I get the spinning beachball and can't enter my password for about 20-40 seconds. It's really really annoying and I have no idea how to fix this. Can anybody help?

With the "Power Nap" feature enabled, the computer enters a so-called standby mode after it has been in sleep on battery power for more than a certain time (one hour, by default.) In that mode, the contents of memory are saved to a file, and then the power is turned off. When the computer wakes up, the contents of memory are restored from the file. As a result, waking from sleep takes longer than it otherwise would. The benefit is that sleep can be prolonged indefinitely without draining the battery or having to reboot.
You have three choices. One is to do nothing. Use the machine as designed. That's what I recommend.
The second choice is to disable Power Nap in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. Uncheck the box marked Enable Power Nap... in each of the tabs. You won't get the wake delay anymore, but you won't get any of the features of Power Nap either. See this page for details:
OS X Mountain Lion: About Power Nap
The third choice is to increase the delay before standby mode is triggered, or to disable standby mode completely. This is an unsupported option and you're on your own as to the consequences. If you choose to go this route, proceed as below. These instructions are for advanced users only. You are tinkering with the hardware configuration at a low level, with the possibility of doing damage from which it may not be easy to recover.
Back up all data.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Drag across the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
sudo pmset –a standbydelay
Don't copy the blank space at the end of the line.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. Press the space bar, then type the delay you want, in seconds. For example, if you want to change the standby delay from the default one hour to eight hours, enter 28800. Don't put commas or other punctuation marks in the number. To disable standby, enter 0 (zero.)
When the command is complete, press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. After running it, quit Terminal. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

  • MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion freezes on wake up

    Hi,
My MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion (up to date) 1 week old freezes on wake up.
Plugged on power or not, same issues.
    No apps running.
When it goes to sleep itself i wake it up it freezes for few seconds
When i put it to sleep mode same issue.
    With the lid same issue...
I already try setting up the sleep mode from 3 to 0 with terminal command it didn't work.
Can it be an hardware issue ?
    Any ideas ?

Dear TheSmokeMonster, Dear all MacBook pro 13'' late 2011 users,
    Here is the update.
As TheSmokeMonster mentionned (above) they asked me to reinstall MAC OSX Lion by shutting down the computer and holding cmd + R while switching it off. Then you choose the language and you are good to go for a looooonngg 4GB download (it took me 8hours yeah chinese ADSL :-/ )
Lion reinstalled itself automatically and restarted. - it did not solve the issue.
I called Apple Care again and we try to run the hardware diagnostic by restarting the computer and holding D. FYI do not try it as this command does not work on the new version of macbook pro.
Here is the intersting part! As the Apple Care already did everything they could to help me. We booked an appointment the my local Apple Store in Shanghai (a real one )
The Genius remake again the SMC and PRAM reset - same issues and he also tried to boot Lion from his own external hard drive - Same issues. So we started to think that it was a Hardware problem.
We tried another MBP 13'' late 2011 (last hardware update) in the shop to see if it works properly and it DOESN'T!
Yeah you heard me. I have been trying more than 10 MBP 13'' (2.4Ghz 4GB and 2.8Ghz 4GB) put them asleep and they all freeze on wake up!! it also does it on Mac book air 13'' it seems to be a global issue on all the new 13'' machines. A compatibility problem between Lion and the new hardware architecture of the 13'' ? just my guess.
Anyway FYI this issue doesn't occur on MBP 15 and 17"
I was just amazed by this global problem so was the genuis. We could not find any solutions cause even a replacement one will have the same problem. They told me i could change for a 15" but i had to go back to the Apple shop where i bought it which is 2000Kms away not really convenient So i file the cas and i took my MBP 13'' back with me.
They will contact me later for further explanation.
    To be continued.

  • Freezing: Macbook won't wake up from freeze; takes 10 hard reboots to fix

I've been reading a lot about people having 'freezing' and 'wake up from sleep' issues with macbooks; apparently all of us are having this issue after upgrading to Leopard. Well, for me -
Everything is fine until my Macbook goes to sleep for a long period of time. It's usually after I wake up the next morning - I open the lid and just watch the beach ball spin for minutes on end. I do a hard reboot, but get a grey screen until the blinking "?" comes up on screen. I hard reboot again. I do this about five or six times on average to finally get the apple logo.
I was hoping this recent big apple update would have fixed my problems, but they're still here.
I'm running the first batch of intel core duo, 2GHZ. 1 GIG memory. I have apple care, but where I'm currently living I'd have to mail to to an apple store.

I don't have a solution for you, but am looking for one myself. I just bought a macbook (2.2 ghz, 2g ram, 120hd) yesterday and am experiencing the same issue. The machine won't wake after a long sleep no matter what I do. So far, I have only had to do a hard reboot once to get it back up, but still not something I care to deal with.
I called apple less than 24hours of my purchase and they said to come in to meet with a genius. I am going to have to ask for a replacement for sure. On the phone, they said that it didn't sound good the problem that I am having and that i could take out the battery. I definitely do not want a problem machine right out of the box.
Good luck and will post more after I go to the apple store on saturday.

  • Why my new macbook freezes?

It's exactly the 5th times that my new macbook freezes! I don't understand why! The screen remains like a screenshot, it's all blocked! And I can't do anything eccept force shoutdown by holding pressed the shutdown button!
I don't understand if it's an hardware or software problem. I copied the system.log of the last freeze, so I paste it here, hoping you'll help me

Boot (hold shift key down) and run in Safe Mode for awhile. See what happens.

  • MacBook freezes after shutting the screen closed down

Since some time ago, my MacBook freezes when I close the screen down for substantial time like a few hours or maybe even an hour, so that I have to kill the MB by pressing the power button for a few seconds. I did this almost everyday for maybe a few weeks now. Perhaps this is the after effects of a fall and there is no cheap cure for it?

Many here have reported no wake from sleep or failure to sleep, running 10.6.3 and other versions, on MacBooks and MBPro's, using Parallels and VMware. Some say deactivating the Sudden Motion Sensor and shutting down Parallels and VMware ,before sleeping, helped.

  • Macbook freezing after waking from sleep

My 4 GB RAM macbook freezes for 30 seconds after I wake it from sleep mode. Sometimes it is unresponsive and sometimes the beachball comes up. I have 200 gigs of free space and no login items. The bluetooth wake is also turned off. What is the problem?

I have noticed similar behaviour.  I think it depends on the network activity being carried out when I closed the lid, and maybe it has to wait for something to time out. I don't really know, I'm just guessing.
I have noticed that when it happens, I have to close the lid and watch the light on the front. This will be solidly lit. When it starts "breathing" I can open my MacBook again and it will work ok.

  • Macbook freezes with Error Message in a Black Box and asks for reboot.

Now here is new problem (i dont know if specifically macbook related or something to do with Mac software). I have faced this thrice today.....
Suddenly my Macbook freezes and in the center of the screen I get a black transparent box (quite big) with error message written in few languages. It simply asks me to hold down the power button for sometime to reboot the Macbook. I have found the Macbook freezes completely, no working keys, trackpad, etc all disabled. And after I push the power button the macbook shutsdown.
On rebooting there is no problem at all, i just loose all the work that was open...
Can someone tell if there is some remedy.. or what needs to be done.... Also is this hardware related or software...
I must mention my macbook is also have RSD problems...

What you are seeing is the message that results from what is known as a kernel panic: a serious error usually caused by some sort of hardware malfunction. The path to debug this is to make sure you unplug any external devices you have attached (if any) and see if the problem persists. If you still have the problem, it could mean a bad video card, logic board, RAM, RAM slot, etc. If you have RSD, then you already know you have a hardware problem, and this is just more evidence of it. Time to go to an Apple Certified Repair shop and have them look at it.
    Good luck!

  • My MacBook pro wont wake up from sleep. The screen is blank at all times, but I can hear the fan for 5 sec then everything stops. Please help! I don't kno what to do.

My MacBook pro is about 3 yrs old. It is a 2008 model right before the new design came out. Recently I closed it up which puts it to sleep and a couple minutes later when I opened it up the screen stayed blank but could hear the fan running but then the power clicked like it was shutting down and I could hear nothing more. My power supply is working and I have already tried resetting it. Can anyone help me? I don't live exactly near a Mac store to get help.

Before resorting to an LB change-out, try this, as it has fixed many of the "silver-key" Macbook Pros with wake-from-sleep issues:
    1) To get the computer running, do an SMC reset. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Your MBP model uses the first option under the subhead, "Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
    2) If you get it running, go to System Preferences > Network and select your Airport connection
    3) In the result main pane, click the "Advanced..." button.
    4) You should be looking at a window with multiple tabs at the top; the "Airport" tab (far left) should be active---if not, make it so.
    5) There is a panel showing "Prefered Networks." Use the "minus" button below that window to eliminate any networks that you don't need to access on more than a weekly basis. I'm down to two: the home Airport Extreme Base Station and the network for a museum at which I volunteer once a week.
    5) Click "OK" and close System Preferences.
Now try letting it sleep and see it if wakes up.
When this happened to my Late 2007 MBP, I used Console to read system.log and found that, on waking, the compuer was looking for the wireless network at a lodge where I'd stayed weeks earlier and miles away. Clear the morass of old networks and keeping the list short has completely cured my wake-from-sleep issues.
The steps I listed take less time to do than to read, and are within the ability even of novice Mac users.
If that doesn't work, you may need to seek professional help. If you take it to an Apple Store and they recommend a logic board replacement, ask about a "Depot Repair." Instead of replacing the logic board on-site (which will whack you to the tune of US$700-1100), they send the computer to a central Apple refurb facility that fixes whatever they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$315 (last time someone reported using the service here). Turnaround is about one working week, and people who have taken of this service have reported being very pleased with the outcome.
You don't show a geographic location. This service may not be available if you are outside North America.

  • Macbook freezes when connecting external display

I have tried to connect my MacBook to an external monitor, a ViewSonic VA1912wb, but the MacBook freezes each time I try. There is no opportunity to go to System Preferences with the display attached. Has anyone got an idea how to deal with this?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GHz, 2 GB

    Hi,
    Sorry for the delay.
I reset the PRAM, and there was no discernible difference in the computer's behavior with the external monitor.
I began the process to repair the directory per your FAQ, but had difficulty in understanding how to boot to a different disk. My Mac OS X install disk is 10.4.6 and I have upgraded to 10.4.8 on my MacBook. I am a Mac newibe, so I may be missing the easy solution.
I decided to try something else in the interim. I connected my monitor to the computer with an analog cable rather than the DV-I cable I had been using.
It almost works perfectly. I am not able to get the MacBook to offer me a choice to use the display at it's native resolution (1440x900), but I can run it at 1440x1050, which is serviceable.
I will close this question, then and put the other issues in the appropriate forum.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Macbook freezes up with a black box in the middle of the screen.

My Macbook freezes up with a black box in the middle of the screen. Inside the black box is a message to power down and then re power up.
The Mac does re-start, but freezes up again after a while.
Does anybody know how to get rid of this problem?

    Hi Steven,
That is known as a kernel panic. They can be caused by many things. The "treatment" is to go through the steps listed here and try them out:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • HT1338 my macbook freezes every time i go to you tube.

my macbook freezes every time i go to you tube.  Do i have a virus or something?  what do i do?

It's not a virus, or any other kind of malware.
Most likely, you've got a problem with the Flash Player software. First, download and run the Flash uninstaller for Mac OS X 10.6 and up:
    uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg
Then, download and install a fresh copy:
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

  • MacBook freezes on startup

Problem: MacBook freezes with the blue background and "Mac OS X" dialogue box upon startup.
What I've done about it(without success): Turned it on while pressing the "Option" key, clicked on the image of HD that comes up, but to no avail. Still freezes at blue screen with "Mac OS X" box.
Background: I updated iTunes, Quicktime, and a security update from Intel last night. Downloaded iTunes from the apple website, installed, and ran it. Was updating Quicktime/intel update using Software Update. While things were downloading, I was browsing in Safari, when Safari froze. I Forced Quit Safari, then tried to turn it back on. However, Safari wasn't responding, so I decided to restart. Please note that when I clicked on restart, the Software Update was not running in the background. Typically, it prompts me to install the updates after downloading, but I got no such message this time. Macbook failed to turn on and got stuck at the aforementioned screen. I turned it off by holding the power button, didnt bother with it overnight, then tried it again this morning with out success. Even after waiting for about 30 mins, I couldn't get past the blue screen with OS X dialogue box.
Questions: So, what do you think I should do? I have some pretty important stuff that I havn't backup-ed recently. Is there any way to solve this problem at home, or do I need to send the computer to an apple store? And if I do need to get a new computer or reinstall OS X, is there a way to transfer the stuff from my current HD without losing them all?
    Thanks for the input.

i have the same problems, has what that guy suggested work, i have also checked the hardware to see if that was the problem by installing the install disk 1 and it wasnt the prob so i tried to eject the disk and it doesnt come out. i have no idea what to do

Maybe you need a new VGA adapter? Can you bring your MacBook and adapter in to an Apple store and have them test your adapter and a known working adapter?

  • My MacBook freezes occasionally...is there a way to bring it out of frozen?  What would be causing it to freeze?

My MacBook freezes @ least once a week.  I have to shut it down.  What might be causing it to freeze & is there another way to bring it out of frozen other than shutting it down?

Not enough free space on the disk can cause the system to freeze...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space
Check the startup disk in case it needs repairing >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)  <  your profile
If that is correct, when you can, you need to update to v10.6.8
Updates are available from your Apple menu > Software Update...
Not enough RAM can cause the operating system to freeze also. You may want to consider increasing memory. To see how much memory you have installed click your Apple menu icon then click About This Mac. That will prompt the System Profiler. See Memory under Hardware on the left.

  • MacBook freezing problem

My MacBook freezes constantly, to the point that I can't do anything at all with it. I took it to a comp repair place that i suspect didn't know what they were doing, who suggested that I reinstall the disc that came with my comp that I don't have anymore. He then suggested that upgrading to snow leopard might help. I bought snow leopard at best buy, but my comp freezes before I can install it. I have to write this from my iPhone because my comp is an expensive brick at this point. Is there anything I'm missing??
P.S. My Mac is using OS X version 10.5.8 if that helps

I am wary of getting anything when I'm not sure whether I will have a chance to even try it
If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do similar testing.
The alternative would be to take the system to either an Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider and have them run the hardware test. You can find the closet one to you at http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/ .
