MacBook freezing problem

My MacBook freezes constantly, to the point that I can't do anything at all with it. I took it to a comp repair place that i suspect didn't know what they were doing, who suggested that I reinstall the disc that came with my comp that I don't have anymore. He then suggested that upgrading to snow leopard might help. I bought snow leopard at best buy, but my comp freezes before I can install it. I have to write this from my iPhone because my comp is an expensive brick at this point. Is there anything I'm missing??
P.S. My Mac is using OS X version 10.5.8 if that helps

If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do similar testing.
The alternative would be to take the system to either an Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider and have them run the hardware test. You can find the closet one to you at http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/ .

Purchased a brand new Macbook on May 29. I have not installed any software or connected any peripherals. Yet my MacBook continues to freeze up at least two times at start up, I'm very concerned. I do not expect this from a $1600 laptop. What should I do? Please help.

Macbook freezes with Error Message in a Black Box and asks for reboot.

Now here is new problem (i dont know if specifically macbook related or something to do with Mac software). I have faced this thrice today.....
Suddenly my Macbook freezes and in the center of the screen I get a black transparent box (quite big) with error message written in few languages. It simply asks me to hold down the power button for sometime to reboot the Macbook. I have found the Macbook freezes completely, no working keys, trackpad, etc all disabled. And after I push the power button the macbook shutsdown.
On rebooting there is no problem at all, i just loose all the work that was open...
Can someone tell if there is some remedy.. or what needs to be done.... Also is this hardware related or software...
I must mention my macbook is also have RSD problems...

What you are seeing is the message that results from what is known as a kernel panic: a serious error usually caused by some sort of hardware malfunction. The path to debug this is to make sure you unplug any external devices you have attached (if any) and see if the problem persists. If you still have the problem, it could mean a bad video card, logic board, RAM, RAM slot, etc. If you have RSD, then you already know you have a hardware problem, and this is just more evidence of it. Time to go to an Apple Certified Repair shop and have them look at it.

Why my new macbook freezes?

It's exactly the 5th times that my new macbook freezes! I don't understand why! The screen remains like a screenshot, it's all blocked! And I can't do anything eccept force shoutdown by holding pressed the shutdown button!
I don't understand if it's an hardware or software problem. I copied the system.log of the last freeze, so I paste it here, hoping you'll help me

Boot (hold shift key down) and run in Safe Mode for awhile. See what happens.

Macbook freezes up with a black box in the middle of the screen.

My Macbook freezes up with a black box in the middle of the screen. Inside the black box is a message to power down and then re power up.
The Mac does re-start, but freezes up again after a while.
Does anybody know how to get rid of this problem?

It's not a virus, or any other kind of malware.
Most likely, you've got a problem with the Flash Player software. First, download and run the Flash uninstaller for Mac OS X 10.6 and up:
uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg
Then, download and install a fresh copy:

MacBook freezes on startup

Problem: MacBook freezes with the blue background and "Mac OS X" dialogue box upon startup.
What I've done about it(without success): Turned it on while pressing the "Option" key, clicked on the image of HD that comes up, but to no avail. Still freezes at blue screen with "Mac OS X" box.
Background: I updated iTunes, Quicktime, and a security update from Intel last night. Downloaded iTunes from the apple website, installed, and ran it. Was updating Quicktime/intel update using Software Update. While things were downloading, I was browsing in Safari, when Safari froze. I Forced Quit Safari, then tried to turn it back on. However, Safari wasn't responding, so I decided to restart. Please note that when I clicked on restart, the Software Update was not running in the background. Typically, it prompts me to install the updates after downloading, but I got no such message this time. Macbook failed to turn on and got stuck at the aforementioned screen. I turned it off by holding the power button, didnt bother with it overnight, then tried it again this morning with out success. Even after waiting for about 30 mins, I couldn't get past the blue screen with OS X dialogue box.
Questions: So, what do you think I should do? I have some pretty important stuff that I havn't backup-ed recently. Is there any way to solve this problem at home, or do I need to send the computer to an apple store? And if I do need to get a new computer or reinstall OS X, is there a way to transfer the stuff from my current HD without losing them all?

i have the same problems, has what that guy suggested work, i have also checked the hardware to see if that was the problem by installing the install disk 1 and it wasnt the prob so i tried to eject the disk and it doesnt come out. i have no idea what to do

2009 MacBook freezes

I bought my McBook in Nov. 2009 and part-exchanged my old Toshiba laptop for an extra 2GB of memory.
Best deal in town, IMHO, but the problem is that my Mac has had a tendency to freeze, completely out of the blue.
Sometimes it will be no start-up and very often when viewing Video, either streamed, on CD or from iTunes downloads.
Is the RAM faulty?
Thanks in advance for all expert opinions. I read some posts on the subject, from 2009, but I wondered whether more may be known now about this fault.

Macbook freezes randomly on Playback in Garageband

After the last Garageband update, my Macbook freezes (Mouse cursor still movable, graphics frozen, keyboard not working, sound still playing) on playback. The project has a quicktime movie (soundtrack project) in it. I already tried different compression modes (JPEG, H-264) for the movie, but that didn't help.
The project worked just fine before the last update. Since then I also updated to the latest perian version. But should that stop the whole computer?
The only way to quit ist forced shutdown.

Thanks for your reply. But all the things mentioned there didn't describe my problem (complete system hang).
I just reverted back to Garageband before the last Update with Time Machine: and it seems to work! I hope Apple fixes whatever is wrong there. Maybe I should have used the downloadable update instead of "Software Update"?!

Macbook freezing after waking from sleep

My 4 GB RAM macbook freezes for 30 seconds after I wake it from sleep mode. Sometimes it is unresponsive and sometimes the beachball comes up. I have 200 gigs of free space and no login items. The bluetooth wake is also turned off. What is the problem?

I have noticed similar behaviour. I think it depends on the network activity being carried out when I closed the lid, and maybe it has to wait for something to time out. I don't really know, I'm just guessing.
I have noticed that when it happens, I have to close the lid and watch the light on the front. This will be solidly lit. When it starts "breathing" I can open my MacBook again and it will work ok.

Macbook freezes post snow leopard when attempting to use minidisplay- hdmi

Previously, the setup worked without a hitch.
Have a mini display port to hdmi adapter, then run the hdmi into lcd tv.
Under 10.5, always found the tv right away and moved into either dual monitor or mirror mode.
Now under 10.6, as soon as I connect the hdmi cord to the tv, the macbook freezes. Thought maybe I could power down, connect cord, then power up -- but that did not work either. As soon as I clicked my account name to log in everything freezes.

Unfortunately I can't say that I had the exact same problem, but it's pretty similar. Apple doesn't make a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter so whatever you're using it's 3rd party. I too purchased an adapter like this (from NewEgg.com) and my 10.5.7 machine did the exact same thing with the first adapter, the second adapter and 10.5.8 had it properly working but the colors were horrible.
Regrettably it wasn't until I went to a MiniDisplay Port to DVI and then DVI to HDMI that I had consistent success in both Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Where did you get the adapter? It'd seem odd that the adapter just suddenly went bad but it might be worth trying a different one or a secondary option. In one particular case, my nearby Apple Retail Store let me try my MacBook Pro over MiniDisplay Port to DVI to HDMI on their big TV to see if it worked.

MacBook freezing - 13" 2GB 2x2.4Ghz

1.4 years old (ish) MacBook freezes when using iTunes, VLC, firefox and quite a few others. I get the spinning ball and i can only switch apps a few times before the thing totally freezes - the mouse pointer moves, but nothing else works.
I had this problem and thought it might be the OS, so did erase & install. Repairing the internal HD from disk utility (in the installer) checked out fine. Software update on new install to 10.5.6, but it still happens, with only a minimum of apps installed.
I think it's the HD, but why did it check out OK in Disk Utility?

RAM can and does fail, it's possible that is what is occurring. You can take a look at Activity Monitor to see how the RAM is being used and how much is free. You can also run Apple Hardware Test and see if that detects any errors. You can locate AHT at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If you find any errors then if you're under warranty still or have AppleCare (highly recommended) the problem would be covered.
Another thought I had is 2 GB is almost nothing these days and you would see a nice performance increase if you upgraded it to 4 or 8 GB. By replacing the RAM that would almost certainly eliminate failing RAM. To upgrade to 4 GB is only about $52 and 8 GB is about $118.

Brand New Macbook Freezing / Faulty Adapter

Hopefully someone out there can help me..
I was given my Macbook Pro as a gift from the parents back in October last year. I remember it freezing on the first or second day of having it, but anyway.. since then it has been fine, until now!
About a month ago, I had my Macbook on the bed & I actually dropped it onto the floor [it worked fine] however, the magsafe charger has been faulty since. I have to wiggle it about to get the light to stay green/orange & sometimes it flickers faintly & the icon switches from charging to just normal on screen. Can someone tell me if I can get a new charger from the Apple store? I have the standard 1yr Warranty.
The other problem, which ONLY occurred this last 2 weeks is that my Macbook will just freeze. No wheel, it will just show the cursor where I last had it & NOTHING will work. I have to hold down the power until it switches off. I send a report to Apple [whatever this means] and sometimes it'll just freeze again a few minutes after. It has even froze on the actual loading up screen [with the white apple/loading icon]. Most of the time my Macbook freezes, I don't even have ANYTHING open.. which I'm guessing is bad news! I used to play my Sims 3 game smoothly before, however, now it also freezes a couple of minutes into it - so I've given that up!
I keep sending these reports & when I restart my Mac, about 5 minutes of using it [IF I'm lucky not to have the thing freeze on me] I'll get the ''You need to restart your computer'' message - and this also, just freezes up my screen. I was sending an e-mail earlier & half way through writing it, it happened & I lost everything! There is NO overheating/unusual noises.. the only time my mac heats up is when I'm using Final Cut / Sims, but even then it doesn't heat up more than usual..
I'm getting annoyed now because I have 2 x 3500 word essays to write & it is very annoying having to autosave every 2 minutes! Help!!

Your Mac should never freeze. There could be any number of causes, and the drop could be a factor. Unfortunately, the 1 year warranty does not cover accidental damage, although you may have homeowner's or renter's that does.
Since the freezing was present before the drop, it could be hardware or software related. A good place to start might be with the Apple Hardware Test, which is located on one of the gray system discs that originally came with the computer. Run the extended version if you can.
If the AHT runs to completion, see if it gives you any error codes that would indicate a hardware problem. If you get any, call Apple and tell them. Error codes indicate a hardware problem which Apple hopefully will be able to fix under your 1 year warranty.
If you cannot even run the AHT because your Mac freezes, then that in itself indicates some sort of a hardware problem, and again, you will need to call Apple about it and see if you can arrange for repair.
It's possible that the freezing and the kernel panic message you received may relate to your RAM not being well seated, so you might want to try reseating it. Instructions will be in your owners manual.

If none of this has helped, you might want to try reinstalling the OS.
As for the MagSafe adaptor, you want to try a different one just to be sure the damage is to the adaptor and not to the port in the computer. Here is a link for troubleshooting these:

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it might be quickest to make an appointment at the genius bar and get them to help you with this. They have a hardware test they can run from the store feed, and they would know what to check.
