MacBook Freezing/ Turning Off

hello all-
Although I've been reading this site for a while, this is my first post- sorry about the length of this, but I want to be as clear as possible.
I have a black MacBook Core Duo 2GHz, 1 GB Ram (512x2). I've had the computer for about 4 years now (Apple Care expired several months back)and have tremendously enjoyed owning it. Originally it came with a rather small HD (I think it was about 80GB) that recently crashed. I swapped it out for larger HD. Originally I tried a WD 320GB at 7200RMP but was continuing to have problems so I swapped it out for a WD 500GB at 5400RPM but my problems persist! For some reason, the issues occur at lesser frequency with the WD 320 GB at 7200RPM.
Here is the issue (note, prior to the HD crashing I never had any problems): the computer at random times will freeze (nothing works: force quit, mouse/ keypad, keyboard, etc). The only way to get it out is to hold the power button or take out the battery. After that sometimes it'll boot back up and sometimes, I'll have to keep taking the battery out a couple of times until it boots. Oddly, at times, the computer may stay on for hours without any problems and at other times, it won't go 5 minutes before it crashes. No matter what, I can't consistently replicate the freezing. I've updated the software and yesterday installed Snow leopard hoping it's a more stable OS- but the problem persists. Crash and System logs show nothing. I've done the verify disk and permissions with no benefit. I've run hardware testing via the install disk and came up clean. I've reinstalled the OS at least 3- 4 times to no avail. I've reset the PRAM and PMU, neither of which helped. I've even tried to switch out the RAM but that didn't help. At this point I don't know what else to do.
I took it into the Mac store and the guy basically shrugged his shoulders and didn't do much else. He didn't run any kind of diagnostics testing. His only suggestion was to leave it and open a work order and have the tab running while they work on it. Unfortunately, he couldn't give me any idea of what's wrong or how much it'll cost to fix. I'm reluctant to do this because I don't want to end up with a bill for $1000 or more. I like this computer, but I have a limit as to how much I'll spend on fixing it- it may be cheaper to just get a new MBP.
Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar issue: Almost 4 yr old MacBook. Started randomly freezing up (not blank screen)about 3 months ago. Will run normally for hrs or even days, then it just freezes. Usually after sleep. Sometimes, it will freeze up if I pick it up off of the table. I can unfreeze it if I tap on the left side of the trackpad area. Then, after about 5 seconds, airport drops out. If I manually induce sleep and awake again, airport reconnect. I have tried all possible tests and solutions; reset all the system stuff, reinstall the system, etc. Just went back to the genius bar this week and was told it was a failing hard drive. Replaced the drive-no change. I think my problem is related to a faulty system management controller. Don't know if there is a fix for it. I can use my macbook regularly most of the time. It's just frustrating that no one, even apple can diagnose the problem.

  • Macbook air turned off without warning?

Hi! Last night my macbook air turned off without warning and wouldn't turn back on until I tried again this morning. A few weeks ago I had my battery and logic board replaced and since then it the screen has gone blue for a few seconds and then back to normal a few times, (in case this is related at all). Is there something I should do to make sure this doesn't happen again.

As you say it is just been repaired I would take it back to the place that repaired it and ask them to look at it.

  • My MacBook suddenly turned off. And won't turn on

My MacBook suddenly turned off.  There was a click sound and then nothing.  I have tried to restart it but nothing happens. No sound no lights. It is plugged in and the power cord shows green. I have not damaged it in any way.....

    Here is what to do;
    1. Unplug everything from your computer.
    2. Take off the bottom of your MacBook / Pro / Air.  (There are usually 3 screws that are longer than the rest near the vent, remember where they go.)
    3. Carefully unplug the battery from the logic board.
    4. Wait 10 seconds.
    5. Plug the battery back into the logic board.
    6. Put the bottom cover back on.
    7. Reboot the computer holding the "Option" key.
I posted this originally here. Re: My Mac randomly just turned off and now it wont turn back on, the charger light is faintly flashing green and amber?!?!

  • MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.

MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.  Battery had 41% just before this happened and green indicator on power cord is showing, so it seems like it's charging.  What should I do?

The led on the power adapter should be amber if it is charging.  Green just indicates that it is supplying power to the MBP.
    Try a SMC reset:

However mine skips this completely and just turns off. WHY? does this mean the battery is bad?
Resetting the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html) fixed the problem in my case. then i did the calibrate the battery again this time it went to sleep not shut down i did this 3 more times why?
the 3 forced shut downs without entering SafeSleep. with logs indicating improper shutdown, will that cause severe corruption to the os and do i have to reinstall the os now?2.66 ghz 2010

without entering SafeSleep. only one time it worked on 10.6.4

This is a current sensor on the power bus. This seems consistent with your symptoms.
A faulty sensor on the logic board means  the board has to be replaced,  take in for repair:

You either need to plug in your charger and if that isn't working if your machine is less than a year old take it in to your nearst Apple Store and let them deal with it. Or if you are out of warrantee you will need to get a new battery for your Mac

  • Cleaned files and apps with "app cleaner" and now MacBook Air turns off during start up. What happens? What can I do? Please help

Cleaned files and apps with "app cleaner" and now MacBook Air turns off during start up. What happens? What can I do? Please help

The "app cleaner" managed to do bad things to the file system so that it is unable to boot any longer.
This is the primary reason I always recommend that any of those so called "cleanup" apps never be used. They do more harm then good.
Try a safe boot by holding down the shifgr key when you hear the boot chime. Maybe that can fix the damage.
    Let us know what happens.

  • Macbook pro freeze+turned off

Hi, I'm using macbook pro 15" 2.4GHz with Lion OSX 10.7.4 (i've just updated it for a couple weeks)
I've just experienced that my mac suddenly freeze (i was using iTunes, adobe illustrator, and my adium+skype was on) and turned off.
It goes on again (showing the same screen as before it turned off) in a minute but i still can't move the cursor.
So the only thing that i can do is just press & hold  the power button until it turns off.
Does anybody know why is this happen?
When it happened, my battery was 60% and i didn't plug in the charger.

  • My Mac freezes, turns off and restarts.

My Mac keeps turning off. It freezes, shuts down and restarts. It's happening quite frequently, everyday, and I'm really worried now. It happens at least a few times everyday but it hasn't been as frequent as it is now. I'm not sure what it could be. A virus? I have a version of MacKeeper. Isn't that supposed to prevent viruses from infiltrating into my system? I'm not tech person so I'm really lost here. Any help would be appreciated. My MacBook Pro is from 2010. Thanks.

There may be other issues, but you should start by getting rid of "MacKeeper."
"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    First, back up all data.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

  • MacBook suddenly turns off at 40% of battery charge and trackpad doesn't work

    Hello,
I had to replace the battery of my white MacBook (13 inches, mid 2010), because it was swollen, and the capacity was about just 20-30% of its original one. I bought a new one. Specifically, this one. After replacing it, I have those problems:
When I run on battery, the computer suddenly turns off at about 40% of the charge. No warnings. Just turns off.
The trackpad is not working properly. I can move the mouse, but I can not click. The swollen battery was pusing the trackpad, and I guess it's broken now. I don't know if I can replace it.
Coconut battery tells that the maximum charge of the battery is below the design capacity. Not sure if this is a problem, or Coconut battery is just comparing my battery's numbers with the theoretical numbers of a brand new battery. Check a screenshot
The battery drains too fast. From 100% to 65% in about 20 mins. So, at the end, I have less than 1 hour of battery time.
I've tried resetting the SMC, following these instructions. Specifically, pressing (left side)Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time, releasing all the keys and then pressing power button to turn on the computer. Not worked. I think it was even worse.
Could it be a problem of this specific battery? Or maybe just the MacBook doesn't accept batteries like that one? It's not original.
In the first case, I would return the battery to get my money back. In the second case, I guess I should have bought an original one.
Additional data that may be useful:
    Mac OS X 10.8.5 (12F4S)
    EFI boot ROM version: MB71.0039.B0E
    SMC version: 1.60f6
About EFI boot and SMC versions, those are the last available official updates, obtained from here.
    Many thanks in advance.

I'd say it was a faulty battery.

  • MacBook Pro turns off during boot?

This is kind of a long story.
I have a 13-inch, Mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks. I was using it near a bathtub, when a moderate amount of water spilled onto the keyboard. I immediately dabbed out most of it, and put it upside down for some time. It was running then, with all the keys and trackpad working fine. t turned it off, and tired turning it on after half an hour. Nothing. I decided to keep it switched off for 7 days, during which I would open the lid every now and then to find vapor on the screen from the keyboard which I would wipe and close again. I turned it on when there was no vapor spotted for 3 days. I plugged it in after 7 days, to see that the battery status indicator was erratic. It turned on with a sound from the SuperDrive (the usual click). There was no startup chime. A few minutes later, it turned off. I decided to reset the PRAM and SMC, and I realized that I can get to my account window successfully (and type a 22 letter password) as long as I keep any key pressed throughout bootup (option, command key, etc). I have tried many times, but it just turns off with a "nik" sound. I haven't backed up, and I have about 270 GB of important data stored that I CANNOT lose.
If it helps, it's 250GB drive crashed in December but it was replaced with a 500 GB and has been running smooth until this.
Please help me! Any advice at all is extremely appreciated. Thank you!

Take the HDD out of the MBP and install it in an enclosure.  Connect it to another Mac and see if you have access to the HDD.  If so, copy what ever files that are important to you to another HDD.
Then you can take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Prepare your self  for unfavorable news.
    Ciao.
