Macbook games

Hi,
I know the Macbook is not for games but somehow I was able to play Call of duty 2 so would Call of duty 4 Modern Warfare work at all?

They are making a mac version yes but only the MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac Pro could handle it.
There is no way the intergrated graphics card could handle COD 4.
On the other hand if you're looking for games then one of the biggest Mac games out there has got to be World of Warcraft and it can run on a MacBook and very well i might add.

My MacBook is only a few months old and I've run games and game demos on it. But lately, when I try and open a couple of my demos, the screen goes black and flcikers, as if going to full screen mode to play the game, but then exits the program, without any warning or explanation.
I have tried the games using the different resolution the games offer, but no luck. Any advice?

  • MacBook games lag :'(

Hey guys. I have a question i was hoping you guys would be able to answer. So basically, i have a MacBook Pro late 2011 with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, with 4GB of RAM. My graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB and pretty much all good games lag
    Any suggestions or tips?

    Hello,
Based on your current specs, I would imagine you're getting some lag. MacBooks aren't exactly the greatest at playing games (although the newer ones are quite capable), but there is always room for improvement. You can upgrade your RAM to up to 16GB which should make a noticeable difference, but 8 will also be fine.
As far as graphics cards go, not much you can change with MacBook Pro's, but I believe your model should have 2 - 1 integrated, and one dedicated. The computer should automatically switch between them (when it needs more power it'll switch to the dedicated). I dunno though, your computer may be different.
Next is the game settings. I've got an early 2011 MacBook pro with i7 and same amount of RAM as you, but it's just 2.0 GHz. Playing any games on highest settings is usually a lagfest (on Mac and Windows Bootcamp). I would reccomend turning off things such as anti-aliasing and various filtering. Another option that makes a big difference is resolution. If you can live with a little bit lower settings, this can be a big fps increaser. Try going from 1440x900 to 720p. This allows me to play games like Assassin's Creed III and Battlefield 3 with no hassle. Usually around 30 fps - could be better, but for a laptop, does great. Also, playing while plugged into AC power can help a little bit.
..another option is an external video card. Never used these, but I heard some of them are pretty good

  • New motherboard (M42A) in repaired MacBook 2.0ghz?

My fiancee just sent her MacBook 2.0Ghz, purchased about two months ago, in due to a sudden and total failure... screen went black, no response to any of the usual diagnostic and recovery tricks. She shipped it in, and the repair ticket came back reporting that they'd replaced the motherboard. At least, after years of reading service-ese, that's what I gleaned... just listed an Apple part number that didn't turn up in any good searched, PCBA (printed circuit board assembly), M42A. Nosing around, this means they replaced the motherboard (they also listed replacing the heat sink, which would make sense if they put a new MB in and kept the old Core2Duo CPU).
What weirded me out was that the symptoms (sudden total failure, no response to power switch or anything else) made me think it was a failure in the power supply, but they didn't replace the internal power controller (I know this because the MagSafe connector still had the crud on it it had when it left here).
Anyway, I have to ask: even this late in the MacBook game, are machines still being produced with early motherboards, and would they still be in the channel even now that they have the 2.16ghz units out? We bought this out of stock at CompUSA in late March, seems like the MB would have been out long enough that the problems with the early motherboards wouldn't still be visible in production units now.
What was the part number on the earliest 2.0Ghz MacBook units? And is the M42A the new, good motherboard or the old, flaky one? I get conflicting information from vendors and what little info I can pick up on the nets. Some vendors are advertising 2.0Ghz units as "new good M42A".
The unit is back in my fiancee's hands (which is cool, because her endless support questions once she was forced to go back to her Windows XP Hewlett-Packard desktop were driving her -- and me -- to suicide) and I am once again pleased with Apple's ASCs, but I was just curious about it.

    Hi turtle,
Apple as other pc maker are required to have part stocked for several years after they discontinued their product, so I guess they still producing the same motherboard.
Maybe they have slightly changed here and there to patch the imperfect design but not totally changed everything around, maybe they just upgrade the firmware on the new motherboard.
    Good Luck.

  • The Intel GMA Chip.

My macbook game with an Intel X3100 GMA Chip (this was last christmas).
To my dismay I cant play my favourite MMORPG (Wakfu) or a couple of others because the games arnt supported for the chip, so I presume.
Is there any way to update the GMA for mac chip or get any new drivers?
and is there any way of getting a GPU Graphics card for it instead or as well as???
    I really need answers ><

This is also not an Apple and/or MacBook specific issue. With the exception of some high-end custom made gaming notebooks, the graphics processors in notebooks are generally soldered to the motherboard. Most notebooks come with either integrated graphics (which is what the X3100 is), discrete graphics (which the MacBook Pro has), or a hybrid of the two (Apple does not have any of these... but other manufacturers do). Integrated graphics processors are generally the least powerful. They share system memory... meaning they use up to a certain amount of your installed RAM for graphics processing. Discrete graphics processors are as close as you can get to something similar to a video card on a desktop. They have their own built in memory and do not have to grab memory from your systems RAM. Hybrid systems have their own memory, but can also grab memory from system RAM if needed.

  • IPhone Randomly Loses Wifi & Data Capabilities, Must Restart to Fix

So I've had my iPhone 5c for the better half of the year, but all of a sudden the past two or so weeks it has been randomly losing most of its functionalities, and restarting it is the only way I can find to fix it, which can be really annoying.
Here's a little more detail of what happens:
I will be connected to the WiFi at my home, when all of a sudden I cannot load anything involving internet (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or even sending iMessages). Despite the fact that the same WiFi network can be working fine on my Macbook, game consoles, and even other peoples' iPhones at the same time, I always try turning off the WiFi after assuming my WiFi was just down.. Even after completely disabling the WiFi on my phone and trying to use my data (while having 3-5 bars), I cannot load anything or send iMessages still. I've tried resetting my router despite everything indicating that the problem is beyond my WiFi.
And the strangest thing is that it only happens when I'm at my house, even though the problem does not seem to be my WiFi (since after restarting, my phone relies on the WiFi fine).
I would take this to an Apple store but I'm positive I'm going to get the "Reset your iPhone back to factory defaults and lose all your data" answer, which is not the one I'm looking for.

I am experiencing the same issue on my iPhone 5S.  Ever since around when iOS 8.0 was released I've intermittently seen this issue occur at random times.  With mine, it can happen at any time (regardless of the wifi or even LTE network).  Data and phone functions will just completely stop working even though the phone shows no indication.  The only way I find out it stops working is when I receive no data when trying to use several different apps which require network.
The only work-around I've found is to reboot the phone.  I've messed with all network-related settings attempting to remedy the problem prior to rebooting but nothing seems to do the trick.  I've tried resetting all network settings which has not resolved the problem.  My last resort was several days ago when I did a complete factory reset and re-install of the ipsw of iOS 8.1.2 from iTunes.
Seems there's either some sort of software bug or hardware bug occurring here.  I'm currently using Verizon, and I have a friend with an iPhone 5S on Sprint with the exact same symptoms.  Looks like I'll be paying a visit to the Apple Store to see what is happening.  In the meantime I've submitted feedback to Apple and I've installed the baseband profile to try and catch the event logs if/when the error occurs again to submit to Apple as well.
My suspicion is something happened with iOS 8 compatibility and perhaps something on my phone or the services I use is creating a software bug which temporarily kills the radios.

  • How can i install windows games in my macbook pro

I m a game lover but since i've macbook pro,i haven't played any game on my macbook...so guys please tell me how can i install windows games to my macbook pro.

As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

  • Why is it not possible to watch a football game in ipad i can watch on macbook

I've tried to watch a football game on an ipad and didn't arrive. I loaded the same site on my old macbook and had no problems at all. With the ipad however the video simply wouldn't load. When I tried to load the plugins they recommended I was told by Safara I weren't able to do so. How can I load the video on ipad? Is it a question of security or can the site be in any other way blocked? thx

It's not the NFL I was referrin to, come from Europe and meant soccer of course. Thank you for the helpful hints, I'll try to see if it changes anything on the ipad.
the site is livetv.ru, is a sports site and so far still a possibility to see league games.
I remember having had problems with mac in the beginning, but must have forgotten .
So basically the best option is to try out the two above and see for furter in the apps store? thx

  • Why does my mid-2010 Macbook Pro suffer from huge FPS drops whenever I try to play games?

    Macbook info: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, nVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB
When I play games on my Macbook Pro, such as League of Legends, Diablo III, World of Warcraft, etc., they operate well with latency of ~80ms usually and fps starting off between 30-60, but after only a couple seconds or minutes my fps drops to 5-15 and the games become unplayable and I must force quit the program. Restarting the computer helps temporarily but then it relapses.
I cleaned out all my downloads, applications, and other deletable files that I could find. I installed and updated Mavericks OS X and the issue persists. Before I installed Mavericks I noticed in Activity Monitor that almost all of my memory was in use while playing a game. After Mavericks the memory is almost all permanently in use, but from what I've read this is what is supposed to happen and instead of looking at memory in use you look at memory pressure, which looks normal.
I was going to upgrade from 4GB RAM (current) to 8GB RAM and see if that helps but idk if that has anything to do with my fps issue or not. Any thoughts?

Alright well I'm definitely not running virus scans or doing system backups and then complaining about slow performance.... The only other application running besides whatever game i'm playing is SMC fancontrol to make sure my computer isn't overheating.
In terms of CPU%, games like WoW and LoL take ~50-60% of CPU while active, but activity monitor still reports ~80% idle. For disk activity, i'm not sure whether it uses optical or not, I assume i just uses the hard drive, which is brand new cus it broke down about a month ago and I had to replace it (the fans are brand new as well, so I don't think it could be build up of dust or anything inside because it was opened and cleaned so recently).
I can set all graphics setting to lowest possible and improve my fps to 20, which is still awful, and enabling vertical sync just sends it back down to 15 fps. I don't see why I should have to use lowest graphics settings anyway. It can't be out of date drivers since i have 10.9.1 running. Could the graphics card be the issue? That would suck since I can replace and upgrade RAM but not the graphics card.
I have repaired disk and disk permissions multiple times, virus scans, the whole gambit and nothing seems to help.

    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • SMC Update 1.1 Macbook Pro Retina 15" with Bootcamp Win 7 FPS in Games

I have the 15" Retina Macbook Pro, and I have definitely had issues with framerate in games played on bootcamp windows 7. The game I am testing fps is Rift. I noticed when plugged in, the fps drops significantly compared to when it is not plugged in (on battery.) Running on ultra video settings at 1920 x 1080, when plugged in I am getting between 7 to 15 fps after about 3 minutes of sustained use. When unplugged however I get a sustained 34+ fps.
I installed the two new updates ( OSx 10.8.3 and MBPr SMC Update 1.1 ) in the hopes they would resolve my issue. However I am seeing the same fps problems as before.
Additionally while running the game the fan spins like crazy at all times and the power cord gets quite warm. Upon quitting the game, the fan continues to spin wildly with no end.
Can anyone else reproduce these observations? I had an open ticket with Apple to fix this prior to the update on my machine. I was so excited when I saw the release notes to these two updates as it appeared they would directly address my problems. Unfortunately there has been no significant change. Needless to say, my work order shall remain open...

    Hi All,
I tried this and it improved my FPS in games yesterday, still not getting FPS I would desire, but its become playable.
    Repasted here from another thread:
My retina MacBook Pro has had terrible graphics performance problems for a couple of weeks. I searched all over various forums and tried everything: resetting SCM, manually selecting discrete/integrated graphics card, deleting graphics kexts, etc. Nothing helped until I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19880198#19880198
Now my rMBP has silky smooth graphics again!
The directions in that post are a little hard to understand so I cleaned them up here:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Hopefully this helps others with bad graphics performance on retina MacBook Pros.

  • Macbook Pro Retina over 200F 5-10 fps in games (after SMC/PRAM Reset)

I have struggled with this for too long now.
I have read every single thread I can find about the issue and tried both complete reinstalled of Bootcamp, SMC reset, PRAM Reset, EFI updates, etc.
When I first got the Macbook, I could run our game development setup in around 60-80 fps.
I use the labtop for game development in Bootcamp (Windows 7 64)
Currently im not able to get more than 10 FPS. And it runs very bad - it runs in 30 fps the first second, the next its a 5, and then it goes up again.
Even though nothing happens on screen.
When i launch a game the GPU and CPU is over 200F in heat.
And thats with all the fans on constantly.
Im very worried here - Im travelling next week where I need this machine to be able to work.
What should I do? Is it broken? Should I get a new one, or will the same thing happen?
Thanks a lot in advance guys!

I would strongly suggest you take it into Apple Store to get it looked at.
In the mean time I can only suggest changing power management to see if this fixes it for now:
You can change the way your computer hybernates from hybernatemode 3 to 0.
3 = RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically. The downside to this mode is that it is very slow. The upside is that it is very unlikely that you will lose any unsaved work should your mbp lose power.
0 = RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake. The downside to this mode is that it does not save any of your work, should your mbp lose power, and you would have to remember to manually save before putting to sleep. The upside is that your computer would sleep & wake up in around 2 seconds.
    Go to Terminal & type:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
That should give you a result of 3.
To change it to 0 type:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
It might ask you to enter your password.
Then delete the old sleepimage file:
    cd /var/vm
    sudo rm sleepimage
Just remember, saving will have to be done manually by you,

  • Can I play games on my MacBook Pro by using an external graphics card and using windows via a software called "Parallels Desktop" or do I have to use Boot Camp (I have both installed)

Can I use Windows Parallel to play games? I mean will it not get enough power? Like I clearly remember that I read some where one my system that the Paralels is getting only 1 GB of my ram. I have the mid 2012 MacBook Pro, the $1500 one.

You shouldn't use Parallels to pay games. If you want to play games you need to install Windows via Bootcamp so that it has access to all the resources available.
