MacBook gives flashing folder on startup, won't boot into single user!

Arrgh.
If I choose a startup disk, flashing folder still appears. I don't have my original cds with me currently. Any ideas?
thanks!

Hi Neil,
Welcome to macbook forum.
Flashing folder mean your HD doesn't have proper OS
to boot up.
Maybe your OS X was corrupted or the HD is failed.
Without the installer CD to help you boot up, you
cannot do much.
Good Luck
Hi,
i have the same problem.
a folder is flashing on startup.
all started when i tried to rename a file from an external hdd.
the system became frozen and i forced it to quit.
and on the next startup the flashing folder appeared on the scren.
i inserted the startup disc that came with my product and i tried to re-install the software.
BUT there is no hdd in my laptop...
it doesn't show up.
i do not know what to do.
the main problem is that i bought this macbook before 10 months from the Apple store in Manchester, U.K. and now i live in Athens, Greece and there is not official Apple customer service or repairing service.
i hope that my machine hasn't become useless...

  • MacBook won't boot in Single User Mode

My MacBook will neither boot up in Single User Mode nor in Safe Mode. Nor will it perform a PRAM zap. The key-combinations I use during boot-up are OK, because they work well on my iMac. Does anyone know why this is? And of course: how it can be solved?
    MacBook: white, late 2007, 13", 10.6.2
    iMac: early 2008, 20", 10.6.2
    key-combo's used: command-S / shift / command-option-P-R

Called MacHouse, they supposed it could be Firmware-related. Since all software on the MacBook was up-to-date, a Firmware-update could not help me out. They advised me to remove the Mac's memory and reboot, thus forcing the Firmware to get a fresh grip on the installed hardware, including keyboards and the like. I don't understand the technical details of this, but it worked.
Removing both memory-cards made the MacBook make panicky beeping sounds, but removing one of them, rebooting, then reinstalling it and reboot again did the trick. It will now boot in Single User Mode, Safe Mode and Apple Hardware Test.

  • MacBook won't boot into OS X (Lion)

I installed Lion about a week after its release, and didn't have any problems with it until a few days ago. I can boot into my Windows partition and "Recovery HD" partition no problem. From Recovery HD, I've run a disk utility check (which yielded an OK), and a subsequent fix anyway (which also yielded an OK). After that it still wouldn't boot, so I went into Windows and opened and read files on my Macintosh HD, and that worked just fine. Booted into single-user mode and ran a fsck -fy, that came back with an OK, so again, I tried to boot OS X to no avail. I went back into Recovery HD and did a Lion reinstall. I didn't actually see that finish, because it finished while I was asleep, but my computer was off when I woke up (which is indicative of an attempted restart, since when it tries to boot into OS X, it hangs at the Apple logo with the spinning wheel. Note that this is different than before, when it would get past that screen and leave me at a blank gray screen, where I could control the pointer.) Can anybody suggest something else I can do to fix this?

the utilities are on the disc too... try holding C at boot like mentioned... otherwise your optical drive or system bus may be bad.
also try a PRAM reset too: hold command option P R at startup until you hear the chime a 2nd time.

  • Boot in Single User Mode gives no keyboard control (wireless (ALU keyboard)

    Power up Mac Pro
when startup sound comes I enter cmd+s
System boots into Single User Mode
    until it displays: root#_
Now I am not able to type anything on the keyboard to display on the screen
What could be the cause of this strange behavior?
I am using the wireless apple alu keyboard with the magic mouse
Oh, I also tried this with an USB attached keyboard and I had the same result. Booting into Single User Mode went fine but then the keyboard did not do anything after once we were in Single User Mode.
Other than on this occasion the keyboard (and mouse) works fine. I've also done the latest firmware upgrades to the keyboard as well. All system software is at the latest revisions.

You may want to find *Using Tiger* forum or PPC G5 iMac; or, go back to earlier versions of Applejack (which always from my experience worked 100% on Power Macs and pre-Leopard).
AJ and SU just use Apple's diskutil and you are always better off with something like Disk Warrior, AJ/SU is handy when you don't have another drive handy to boot from or just wanted to clean up caches or something.

  • 2Ghz Macbook won't boot into OS

I've had it (white 2GHz MB) for a month, and wasn't expecting something like this to happen so soon, if at all. I've had other problems with my PC laptops, but nothing this..weird and unexpected. I got a Mac just so I wouldn't get such weird and wonderful problems such as this.
I was just browsing on the net, nothing special, I bookmarked a page in Firefox, and then the screen comes up telling me to shut down and restart. Did that, had the apple logo come up, think for a few seconds, then the restart screen came up again.
Ever since then, when I try to turn it on, something (I'm assuming it's the hard drive) whirs up for a second, the apple logo comes up and the intro sound goes, and then it shuts down. Then it repeats this process, with the HD whirring up, intro sound going, apple logo appearing, then shutting down. The first time through this, the white indicator light turns on, but after the first shutdown, it stays off. I can stop it from cycling through this by holding the power down until it shuts down, but that's the only way that seems to affect it. Trying to turn it on again only makes it go through this again.
I'm planning on bringing it into the store when I can, but I live several hours away from the nearest. I guess I could send it in too, but I don't want to be without my laptop for a month or more if it's something that would just require the right input of keys or something simple.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
2GHz Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   won't boot into OS, weird problem

I've now tried inserting the install disk, but what I had assumed was the HD seems to be the disk drive instead, because now it seems that it is pushing the disk out, not allowing it in.
The only added RAM was instore when I got it, upgraded to 1 gig. No recent applications that I can remember. I don't think I did anything different with it at least for quite a few hours.
I don't know what a bad battery would have to do with it, it was fully charged, and does the same thing when the AC isn't plugged in.
I've been very happy with the laptop and Macs in general until now. Everything's run beautifully, I haven't been getting discolouration or anything, there's a bit of a whine but it's quieter overall than any computer I've had before. It's just a really, really odd problem (that seems to be isolated, from what I've seen looking around). Unfortunately, this problem is making it totally unusable for the moment.

  • Yosemite install won't boot into any mode

Really sorry if this has been covered before but I spent a good time searching and couldn't find any existing posts with symptoms to the same extent.
I've got a 2008 iMac 27" and have the latest version of Yosemite installed (10.10.1 I guess). I upgraded to Yosemite probably 2-3 weeks ago and everything has been fine. Then yesterday when I woke it up from sleep it effectively froze - no mouse or keyboard input. So I did a reset by holding down the power button, and when I turned it back on it went to the apple logo boot screen with a progress bar that gets to just below 50% and stuck there. I've restarted quite a few times and left it running up to six hours and still it doesn't boot.
Now this is similar to the issue here - OSX Yosemite won't boot after install on mid 2010 iMac - except I am unable to boot into any mode, and the only startup keys accepted are the P-RAM reset. It won't boot into recovery mode (command+R), safe mode (Shift), startup drive select mode (Option), diagnostics mode (D)... nothing
I've booked into a Genius Bar appointment when the Apple stores reopen after Christmas, but I'm hoping that is a last resort and to be honest I'm unsure what they can do for me except to say it's a lost cause.
Are there any suggestions on what could be happening and why it's ignoring the startup modes? I would have suggested the keyboard not being recognised except the P-RAM command works perfectly, so it's obviously seeing it. I'm a little scared that because it won't let me into a boot device menu (which must operate independent of any HDD) then there's an issue ahead of that in the boot sequence, so possibly the motherboard is shot...
Sorry if I seem a little desperate. I had a HDD crash two years ago to the day (great Christmas present Apple) and it kind of puts a dampener on things.
Happy holidays and I'm grateful for any help that anyone can offer

  • OS X Lion 10.8.2 won't boot into recovery mode

Help! OS X Lion 10.8.2 won't boot into recovery mode, I get a grey screen, the apple icon and the spinning symbol...Does anyone have any suggestions?
Have a MacBook Pro (2009) and had no problems until upgrading to LIon from Snow Leopard... thanks!

Hi there - thanks very much for your suggestion, it did reboot eventually but took a long time to get there.
I've have run Disk Utility. After Verifying the disk it said it needed Repairing - so tried doing that and got the message " Error: Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files" I have got Time Machine but haven't backed-up since Dec 12...Can I use "Restore" to copy the MBP HD to an external HD and then re-install Lion?

  • Computer won't respond to single user or "C" command when booting up

The machine goes straight to the regular log-in screen. To repair, I have to redesignate my start-up disk. And I can't use applejack as I can't get into single user mode. I also tried to zap the PRAM, one of my favorite activities when I had an original I-Mac and was running OS 9, but I couldn't do that either. It does eject a CD while booting up when I hold down the right button on the mouse.
I've repaired the disk, repaired permissions, run the maintenance scripts, and checked my preference files. I've also redone keyboard set-up. I haven't done a hardware check.
I'm using a Macally ikey keyboard but the same thing happens with the apple-delivered keyboard that came with the machine. (I spilled coffee on the latter so its only partially functional.)
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Replace the keyboard with another MacAlly, or Apple wired keyboard.
    Don't drink near your keyboard.
    Use the startup manager:

Limping along with a keyboard that has been shorted is only asking for something wrong to be typed at the wrong time.

  • Factory fresh Thinkpad T440 won't boot into preinstalled Win8

    As the title already tells,
my company orderd new Thinkpads with preinstalled Win 8.
So I packed one out and pressed the power on/off button but the Thinkpad won't boot into Win8. Right now it hangs in the screen where I can choose from which option I'd like to boot (network, SSD etc.)
So I decided to take another one but it has the same problem.
I have no clue what I can do about this problem.
Has anyone a suggestion for me what I can do now ?

    Hi Mjschuster,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
Check if the HDD is detecting in the BIOS.
If yes, then perform “System Restore” to reinstall the Operating System.
If it is not showing in BIOS, try reseating the drive.
    Best regards,

  • EMac won't boot to hard drive - Flashing Folder at Startup

I did have this eMac working with this Hard Drive months ago. Now I just get the Folder with the Flashing icon at Startup. So I installed OSX Tiger on a Firewire External Drive & it Works perfectly running from the FW HD. The Internal Hard Drive then shows up on Desktop. I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive & everything comes up Perfect. It just won't Boot to the Internal Hard Drive. I even used Super Duper to make a Clone of the Firewire Hard Drive that is running, but Still I get the Flashing Folder with The Finder Face, when I unplug the Firewire Drive & attempt to boot from Internal HD. Any clue? Thank you in advance.

I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive
Run Repair Disk on the eMacs internal disk.
If it passes then open the System preferences > Startup Disk and select the eMac's disk.

  • My 2006 macbook has flashing Folder and '?'

My 2006 macbook won't boot and I can't see it's hard drive on my imac when in target mode. I can reverse the target mode and run the imac from the macbook but still don't see the macbook hard drive. I have the OS install disk it shipped with but the optical drive doesn't seem to work. In target mode (with the macbook as host and with the install disk in the imac) I've tried to boot from startup disk but can only see the imac's drive. I'm guessing the hard drive is dead but would I be able to use it as a host with a dead hard drive? Any tips?

The flashing folder/? Means the MacBook cannot find a bootable operating system.  In this case the hard drive is not working or the operating system is corrupted.  Since you cannot see the hard drive at all from the iMac and Disk Utility on there, the hard drive is not working.
When you say the optical drive does not seem to be working, have you tried starting the MacBook with the system install disk in the drive while holding the C key down?
f that will not start, then you need to get a new hard drive...I would NOT buy one from eBay.  There is no guarantee you will get a working drive from there or have any recourse if it is bad.  Go to people that can be trusted like OWC, http://www.macsales.com they guarantee everything they sell.

  • Macbook crashed : Flashing folder with question mark (noise on hard drive)

My macbook (intel core duo) just crashed a few days ago. This is what it's doing:
The screen displays a a flashing folder with a question mark. I did find an article in apple for that : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
But the think is, it (macbook) turns off after a while. I did try to boot up with the installation CD, but it can't find my hard drive. So, I thought it must be a hard drive problem. And I could hear that the hard drive makes a noisy sound. So, before I run to bestbuy or futureshop to get a new hard drive, I wanna make sure that it's really the hard drive that went kaput!
I was trying to install the leopard. It just crashed when I went surfing, and editing on iMovie.

I have a MacBook 13" Core 2 Duo, 160GB HHD, 2GB memory. My hard drive appeared to "crash" a few days ago. Whenever I pressed the power button, I would eventually get a grey screen with a folder with a "?" in front of the folder icon. I decided to re-install OS X thinking this would resolve the issue. During the install process, I would eventually get to the point where I am asked which drive to install OS X. The computer didn't recognize the internal hard drive. I do have an external hard drive for backups and the computer did recognized this one (WD MyBook).
I have since bought a new internal hard drive (Seagate 200GB 7200RPM 2.5" Mobile with Shock guard), installed it and went through the process of re-installing OS X. Again, the computer doesn't recognize the new internal hard drive. And again, the external hard drive is recognized.
For the time being I've installed OS X in the external hard drive. But now I have a new internal hard drive but is useless since the computer will not recognize it.
Anyone installed a new internal hard drive and experience the same thing as I have? Anyone with possible solutions or any advice you can offer?
    Thanks.

Before you give up, reset system PRAM and NV-RAM and see what happens.

  • MacBook Pro flashing folder with question mark - NO installation/setup disks

I recently bought my Macbook Pro in August of 2012 and I have noticed that the newer MacBooks do NOT come with additonal installation disks or anything of the sort. I started up my Mac today and was faced with the flashing folder with a question mark on it. I already know what this is implying and I have tried literally everything to fix it. It does not recognize command-R so I cannot choose HD recovery and when I try to perform "first aid" on it, it does not recognize my disk-0 and when I try to verify or repair, it does not let me. All options are greyed out. I have tried resetting the PRAM but that does not do anything either and I cannot boot it to single user mode. Please help. The last thing I want to do is bring it in for repairs as it is my last week of classes in university and I absolutely need my laptop for school work.

  • Macbook Pro (Core Duo Mid 2006) won't boot

My macbook pro won't boot.  I'm suspecting that the HD has gone out again, but I also don't seem to be able to boot from a CD.  When I startup, it gives me a grey apple screen with a spinning gear.  I tried running disk first aid from the command line and it said the B-Tree was corrupt and could not be repaired.
What has me confused is that I am also unable to boot from a CD/DVD.  When I startup with a CD in the drive, it spins up and then ejects.  If I insert it again, it spins up again, then spins slower, but I can still hear it spinning and just hangs.  It seems to make no difference if I hold the C-key or not.  I have tried 3 different MacOS X disks and a DiskWarrior disk all with the same result.
I've also tried zapping the PRAM and letting it sit unpowered with the battery out.
Leading up to all of this, the computer got very slow.
Any ideas?  I'd like to have a feeling that my CD/DVD drive isn't broken before I spend any money on a new HD.  The computer is 6 years old, but I'm just not ready to spend another $1-2k on a new one.
    Thanks

You got 6 years out of it, it's 1.5 years past average of 4.5 years, hopefully it's a software issue.
Run through these User Tips, it's for 10.6 which you should be on (call Apple via phone for the 10.6 disks) and give it your best shot to extend it's life a bit longer.
