Macbook goes to sleep but does not wake-up

Hmm... I've had this macbook for a while now (?? a year maybe ??) and about 2 months ago I started having this exact issue, close lid to sleep returning it would not wake and a hard reset (hold power for 5+ seconds) is required.
I too discovered such links as this and also the older (also unanswered):
http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8690782
But as others have said there doesn't appear to be a solution?
RESET THE SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) does appear to work, however the issue returns again after a few days or weeks... I cannot find anything that guarantees to return the issue it just starts happening again after a while.
The battery appears to be in okay condition, although I think it might run down a little faster now days than when I first bought it, but I assume this is to be expected.
I also had suffered from what sounds like an issue with wifi weirdness - signal would drop to 0% suddenly, no longer "see" the wifi hub that it has been using forever (although it still, randomly, sees other nearby hubs) for no apparent reason, and that kind of thing - all these times the only solutions that have worked have been to stuff around with the wifi hub turing off extas, flipping from "Auto" to a specific Number (1 to 13) and turning on (OR OFF!) Mixed B/G to just B OR G... very strange... and random.
The only things I've changed recently are, upgraded to snow leopard (from leopard) and got an external display. But I cannot say if the incidents coincided or not, as I didn't realise the sleep/wake issue was an issue for a while, as the first few times I just thougth "Oh, something weirds happened... Reset..." and didnt' really think too much about it until it happened for the 3rd or 4th time and I could see there was a pattern...
The external monitor via minidisplay port adaptor i got from teh apple store.
I don't use it with the machine closed or external keyboard/mouse, although I've heard you can do this, I use the monitor as a secondary display when I'm at the desk, the rest of the time I just use it as I have always done.
I would love to see a solution to this, I guess I could try warranty, but I dunno if the issue is warranty "level"...?

  • My iMac goes to sleep and does not wake up, the fans also make a loud noise

My iMac has just had its hardisk replaced, few months ago. Now whenever I go into any website, do downloads and when it goes into screensaver it makes a **** of a noise then when I leave it it does not go into sleep but shuts down. If I try and restart straight away it won't switch on I have to wait a while. I think it gets very hot and might be shutting down. I have cleaned the fans and reset the SMU and PRAM. Any other suggestions or do I need to replace the fans???????????????????

You certainly have a heat problem, since the machine needs to cool down before you can turn it back on. Have you opened the case (as long as it's not an iSight) and vacuumed the fans and air vents? If that doesn't help, you will probably need to take it in to be looked at. Have you checked t see if you qualify for one of Apple's Repair extension programs?

  • My MacBook Pro pwers up but does not get past the the Apple logo.

I have a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion.  It powers up but does not get past the Apple logo.  The hardware test did not reveal any problems.  It will also not get any further when I try to start up in Safe Mode.  The last thing I was trying to do was connect to it from my desktop which I have done before.  Any ideas.

I was able to get into the Repair utility and resolved some Permissions problems.  It verified the disk and found no problems.  However, it did not resolve the issue.  I was also not able to get into Safe Mode.

  • Computer hanging on closing lid and not going to sleep, indicator does not blink

    i have a 1 month old Macbook Pro 13" i5 with 4Gb memory.
when i am closing the lid the computer is not going to sleep, hard drive continues to spin and power indicator does not blink and it remains solid.
on opening the lid again screen keep blank and does not show anything while i can hear spinning of hard drive. than i have to forcefully shut off the computer by pressing power key and than computer starts after that.
Apple support told me to press shift+control+option+power and than start computer, it fixed the problem only once and they told me to do it again when it comes again. but write now i am getting it everytime.

    Hi guys -
First off make sure you don't have 'Wake for ethernet access...' enabled in System Preferences/Energy Saver/Options - I'd also run Disc Utility and repair your permissions as well. OS X requires 'maintenance routines' to be performed on a certain basis and you can use this free application to help you with that...Onyx.
Check the obvious as well - that you don't have any applications that might keep your Macbook awake ...some printer utilities do this for example.
After all this shut down and restart and hopefully things will be better - if not, there may be a chance that the mechanical parts that put your computer to sleep may be at fault ...and you'll need to visit an Apple dealer to verify this.
    Hope some of this helps.

  • P55T-A5116 when it automatically goes to sleep it will not wake up without a hard reboot

When I allow my computer to go to sleep and it stays in sleep mode for about 15 min, it will not wake up unless you do a hard reboot.  The power button stays solid illumination of white and the screen is black, even when I make the settings for any keyboard stroke to wake it up.  I updated the driver for the display, but that did not work.  I've looked at all the postings in the forum, but doesn't seem to have a solution.
The odd thing is that if I manually put the computer to sleep, the power indicator blinks like it should in sleep mode and wake back up.  The issue is when I just leave it unattended and let it go to sleep.  The only thing I haven't done is do a complete factory reset, which I really don't want to do.  Can someone help me with this?

Hello guys. Same story! My computer sleeps off when am typing. Sometimes it becomes too much and i can hardly type any   word. Its very very annoying and it has stressed me because i have much to do. i have checked power settings but looks to be okay. Imagine it has gone to sleep 10 times as i typed this text!  i have to keep touching the power button all the time! sometimes i touch any key and it goes on

  • Led Light on MageSafe Charger Does not light;MacBook Air Recognizes it but does not charge

So I've had my MacBook Air (Mid-2011) for over a year now. The reason I am posting this is because I originally had a 40W MagSafe "L" Shape that came with my MacBook Air. Well I accidently spilled Pepsi on it while it was plugged in and you get the gist of that. Well I had bought an 85W "L" Shape adapter and it works perfectly fine, no problems. I've had the 40W stored away for probably 5 months or so and recently got the itch to work on it and try to trouble shoot it. Being an IT student, I get a hunch to just take apart things and try to fix them. But anyway, I've reset the prongs on the L part itself, I've changed the plug in to the 3 prong AC instead of the "Duck Face" thing. I've checked for SMC updates and it told me my MacBook does not need it. Well when I plug in my charger, it is recognized immediately by my MacBook. But on the top where the battery level is, it says "Battery is not Charging" and also says "Power Source: Power Adapter". So I am a little confused as to why it won't charge. I let it dry out when this first happened in some rice but I am not sure that did anything for it. I also have cleaned it, like i said I reset the prongs on the L shaped adapter itself. I haven't on the other hand gone and opened it, just because messing with those adapters and any adapters can lead to you getting shocked regardless. So if anyone has any suggestions let me know, I would like to use this charger as a At home charger or my mobile charger when I go to school. Thanks!

"drying it out" does nothing as per the acid in the soda and sticky corrosive sugar and acid left behind.
Youve gone thru $100 worth of effort in repairing a $60 charger, and plan on more effort.
Either a used charger online would be a cheaper option and better than possibly causing logic board damage to your macbook Air.

What all USB or Firewire devices do you have connected?
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if sleep/wake works OK in Safe Mode.
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • HT201150 macbook air 11" 2013 does not wake from sleep mode. Any ideas?

Since I have changed my macbook air, I had started to have these issues. This is my third macbook air11" and until this one all was fine. All of a sudden I started to have the sleep/wake problem. Oce the lid is closed, it goes to sleep and does not wake up or the battery needs to be charged pops out and I have to charge for 10 minutes and find out that I already have 80-90% battery power. Also the apps open up, but the windows get lost( mail is open, but no window to read the mails) The genius bar checked the laptop twice and finally changed it , but nothing else changed in my life. All the issues are the same, and even getting worse. Just a minute ago, I even lost the WiFi. "There is no hardware message appeared!! Anyone for any ideas?

You're welcome... here's hoping it's not a hardware issue but this test will elimnate any suspicions.
You could also check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart

my macbook pro goes to sleep by it does not wake up afterwards. I have to restart it. I had recently to change the board in the attached Thunderbolt display, because I noticed that the same problem arose when the display was attached.
Now with the new board, it can't be the display's fault. I hope it is not macbook pro's main board fault. Maybe hasthe notebook board been damaged by the faulty display?
To bring my MacBook Pro to service will slow down my work. This is why I am posting this message, in the hope to be able to run a diagnostic test myself.
    Thanks a lot, in advance.

  • Display issue - My macbook pro 2011 detects my display but does not display an image

Hi, I am having a problem connecting my MacBook Pro (2011) to my HP 2511x display.  I used the display all morning with my mbp connected and closed.  When I came back, after the computer went to sleep, I cannot get any image on the display.  The computer detects the display but no image appears.
    I have tried-
Installing the latest firmware and software updates
restarting both the computer and monitor
trying all of the possible display arrangements and settings for resolution and refresh rates
Also I am connected using a minidisplay to DVI adaptor in the thunderbolt port.
    Any and all suggestions appreciated.
    thanks.

  • TS4080 apple thunderbolt display image on display intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys. Rebooting by pressing the power button resolves issue.

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
    Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.
