Macbook hangs on blue screen with menu icons, won't start

I am having an issue with my MacBook (2010), which won't fully start up anymore. It gets past the initial grey loading screen and starts loading a few of the menu bar icons in the upper right corner. Then it stops with only a few of those icons loaded, a blue screen, and no desktop icons.
The MacBook is running 10.6 (if I remember correctly, it's 10.6.8, but I'm not 100% sure).
Things I've tried already:
- Safe boot (doesn't work, no indication that it recognizes me trying to start it in safe mode)
- Resetting the PRAM
- Leaving it on for a long time to see if it will eventually start
I lost the OS disc a while ago, so unfortunately I can't boot from that. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

You might want to consider running the combo updater over your install to refresh your files.
Combo updater: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update v.1.1 - 1.09 GB
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.6.8 install from a regular update, just run the 10.6.8 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.6.7 to 10.6.8. If somehow the 10.6.8 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 blue screen with loading icon

I was using my 2011 15 in. (2.0 GHz model) Macbook Pro, when a blue screen popped up for a second or two showing a circular gray loading icon, then disappeared and it looked like I had just logged in. It started to load the dock and desktop icons and my startup programs opened, but it didn't look like it had restarted because it didn't ask for a password, and only lasted a few seconds including the blue screen. At the time it had happened, I was working on a very high poly model in Blender, which might have caused it. I just got this computer, so I really hope there is nothing wrong with it, but I also got a warranty on it, so if there is anything wrong I can bring it in. If anyone knows if this is serious or not, please tell me. Thanks.

Thanks for your response, and since I submitted this question, the same problem happened again. This time I was playing Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam, so I'm noticing a trend where this problem only occurs when I'm working with 3D graphics, which is basically why I got the Macbook Pro in the first place, thinking it would be good with this sort of thing. Interestingly, though, I first played the game on this computer fine at fairly high graphics settings and got a good, steady fps for about an hour, but the second time, when this crash occured, I had only just started. This has gotten me confused and worried, and I'm wondering if I should bring it in to Apple, and if so, if they can fix it. Any answers would be great. Thanks!

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 won't shut down. Blue screen with spinning wheel.

it's an 15 inch macbook pro. since I bought this computer was working fine about last year. Somehow, start of this year, the problem begins. Everytime when i opened microsoft word 2011 on mac or Photoshop cs5, and quit the software as normaly. When i try to shut down the blue screen with spinning wheel apears. this spining wheel is endless. But funny thing is that after use other software such as games, web browser (safari) etc. and quit them. when i shut down there was not a problem. only word 2011 for mac and adobe photoshop cs5. Any solutions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Macbook pro hangs on blue screen at startup

I've been having intermittent problems with my Macbook Pro starting up, but this is the first time it's completely failed to start up: I get the startup sound, the grey screen with apple logo, and then it just hangs on a blue screen, with a grey startup dial, and nothing happens. It was working fine up until this evening; it's confusing to say this, but it seems to have moods where startup is an issue. But I have taken it in several times for this very problem: the first time, they replaced my hard drive, the second I was told to reinstall OS X, and then add software back one program at a time. All I had on this machine was Adobe Creative Suite 4, nothing which would cause any issues. I don't even have any fonts on this machine!
Desperate to know what might be the problem; I've tried a few of the basic troubleshooting work arounds and none of them are working. Does anyone know what the issue could be?

If you get a external USB or Firewire drive, you can hold c and boot off the installer disk #1 that comes with your computer, the second screen in is a Utilities Menu and Disk Utility.
Select the EXTERNAL DRIVE and Erase, format HFS+ Journaled GUID partition.
When that's completed quit Disk Utility and your back in the OS X installer, install OS X on the EXTERNAL DRIVE.
When that's complete quit and reboot hold down the OPTION KEY and select the External drive to boot from.
    Now GRAB THOSE FILES!!!
After that you can do what you want to the boot drive, if you can't fix it, you can always install OS X again (without formatting) and it should leave your programs and files alone. But if something goes wrong you have a copy on the external drive.
You can choose to Disk Utility format and reinstall everything, OS X, programs and files as well.
If for some reason you can't access your internal drive, either booted from the install disk in Disk Utility or via the external drive, it's possible your hard drive died.

  • My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • MBP stuck on blue screen with spinning loading icon during update to 10.6.7

    I have a mid-2010 model Macbook Pro 13inch, 2.4ghz/4gb ram
I've been scouring apple forums and even reddit and my googlefu has yielded no such luck. Basically, System Update has been yelling at me for a few weeks now to upgrade to 10.6.7 (among other updates) and I've been putting it off and putting it off, with the intention of eventually doing the update, but I just kept forgetting.
Finally tonight, I remembered, and decided to open System Update, and do all the recommended updates that it was asking me to do. So, without thinking twice (I've never had an issue with this before) I clicked download and install, and away it went, downloading like usual and then rebooting.
Thing is, it's been stuck at this blue screen with the spinning spiral coming up on 5 hours now. I know the 10.6.7 update was close to 400mb, but I've never had anything like this happen before.
My hard drive had more than 150 gigs free on it last time I checked, and it's been running absolutely flawless up until now.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it supposed to take so long? What do I do?
I've been contemplating shutting it down by holding the power button, but since it's a OS update I'm afraid the drive will be corrupted, and unfortunately I don't have a current backup of the drive either... Help

I left my macbook plugged in over night, we're now going on 14 hours of this blue screen with the spinning wheel/symbol. Anyone?

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • Blue screen and corrupted icons with 10.5.7

    Hello.

I needed to do some urgent work, and so I accessed the vista partition...and that worked (?!?)

  • System hangs during shutdown, blue screen with gear spinning.

My MBP gets stuck during shutdown/restart process.
The system acts like it is shutting down, exits the the desktop, goes to a blue screen with a spining gear then never turns off.  It seems the screen falls aslep if you leave it awhile but the system itself won't actually shutdown. If you move the mouse the screen lights back up. but still shos the "death gear"! happens on both shutdowns or restarts.  System must be turned off by holding the power switch for 10 secs.
    Please help!
    Chris

Seems like a odd thing. If youve downloaded torrents of hacked programs or things like that may have been the cause by the uploader hacking and doinng this. I would bring the Macbook Pro to the apple store and see what they can do. If they cant do anything about it I would backup all the important programs and get rid of anything that seems suspicious. Then upload the stuff back onto the computer after you restore it. Thats the best solution.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
