MacBook hard disk never stops

My MacBook (Late 2008, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running OS X Lion (10.7.5) has a hard disk that will not stop running lately, even during sleep.  I have a Time Capsule using Time Machine and have iCloud running with iPhone 5 and 2 iPads in the house.  However, this has never been a problem before.  When I have the MacBook running on battery in the house, the batteries even run down in less than 2 hours due to the hard disk and fan constantly running.  Also, it seems to be affecting the speed of the wifi internet access and of the Time Machine backups.  Any ideas please?

Or is Spotlight scaning the data on the disk?
Even it is doing the scaning, it could have been completed and stop. Have you tried to do the Restore for your iPod?

When I connect my iPod to my Macbook the hard disk never stops spinning. When I connect it to my PC spinning stops after sync with iTunes and just turn on when I access the iPod.
Does anybody know how to turn that off?

  • MacBook hard disk failure - nothing retrievable

My MacBook fell off a guitar amp the weekend before last. It carried on working for the rest of the day without any problem, but after I shut it down, I was unable to boot it up again the following morning. It couldn't get beyond the grey screen and spinning wheel.
I took it to a Mac reseller/repairer who, after keeping it four days, reported that the hard disk was dead and because it was a mechanical failure, nothing was retrievable.
I've come home with a new hard disk fitted, but could really have done with retrieving some of my files from the old hard disk.
Does anyone know if this "nothing can be retrieved" diagnosis is correct?

You could put the bad drive in an external enclosure and then download Data Rescue II and see it it can find files to retrieve. If it can, then buy it for $95 (I think) and maybe you will retrieve everything you need. It worked for me on a drive that was otherwise un touchable.
The way I look at it is this; you will not be out a dime to try this procedure. The reason I say so, even though you have to buy an external enclosure, is that if you had already owned an external enclosure with a drive in it you would not have be in this predicament. You could have used it for an ongoing backup of your regular drive. So, if you were to buy one now, and also buy a good drive to put in it, you won't have this problem again. Otherwise you will likely experience it again some day as most people do experience a HD failure at some point,
Data Rescue II is free to try to see if it is going to work for you.

  • Problems on MacBook Hard Disk

I have a problem of my MacBook. My Mac's hard disk free space is getting smaller and smaller, but i haven't saved new things, download stuffs nor upgrading any of my software. It seems that every time i switch it on and surf the net with safari or just switch it on and do nothing, the capacity of my hard disk will decrease. I have been seeking for help almost two weeks, it is really difficult to know what is going on to my MacBook. Help please.

    Hey,
Did you manage to get an answer? Are you deleting internet temp files? Some time ago I had the same issue when I started using Veoh Web player.
It seems that software saved the downloaded video information and, of course, the free space began decreasing.
Not sure whether this answer may help you but, who knows? :-))
    Kind regards

  • MacBook hard disk upgrade - any concern?

After installing Leopard, I found that my 2GHz Core Duo MacBook original 80G hard disk is really not enough for the OS plus my usual apps (Final Cut Studio, Photoshop, iWork, iPhoto), they took up more than half of my HD space. So I decided to get a 250G hd for my MacBook. Then my friend @ the computer store told me the early MacBook can't use anything larger than 160G! Is that true? I just don't wanna spend those extra $ for GB that I can't use.
    Thanks!

It can use the 205 GB with no problem. Some people get confused because at the time your MacBook was made the 160 GB drive was the biggest one you could get installed by Apple. Thats because it was the biggest one available at the time. It was not a limit of the MacBook but a limit of what apple sold. You might have your friend that works at the computer store to hang out here on the forums he might learn something about Macs:->

  • Macbook hard disk problem??

    Hi all,
My macbook crashed and i had to restart it but since then, although it turns on, it doesnt boot. The screen lights up and i get the apple logo but that's all. I ve done the PMU, PRAM resets but nothing changed. Does this mean that my hard disk is gone? Has anyone else had this problem before?
    Thanx for the help
    G.T.

    Hi -
Try booting up from your install CD (hold 'C' at startup with disc inserted) then launch Disc Utility from the top menu. Verify the disk for problems, repair permissions and hopefully all goes well.
If you can't boot up with 'C', try holding down 'Option' until you're presented with a choice of the CD or your still existing drive.

  • MacBook hard disk just died

Guess what? After suffering from the worst case of RSS, which led to two logic board replacements, after one palm rest, keyboard and trackpad area replacement due to discoloring, after all that suffering and lost time, after suffering from the huge quantities of heat produced by the MacBook which letd to a crack in the 100% wooden desk I put it on, I now, yes me, get a question marked folder when I start my macBook. Aparently the hard disk just died!
I tried everything, there's no way any application from the MacOS Disc 1 becomes aware of the hard disk's existance now, it's just gone forever.
It really makes one think about the quality of the parts used to make the MacBook and recent Apple hardware.
I know I'll go next week to the Apple rep to ask for the disk replacement that will take some time to get here (and surely they will send me the same 60Gb when they do send it) and then reinstall the whole thing.
I just wonder what will come off next??
    Best,
    Pedro
MacBook (Week 20, Replaced LogicBoard twice), White 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Also: PowerBook G4, Airport Express, iPod Nano

Yeah they will change it, but to my point again, what will come off then? and will it be on warranty when that happens? And what about my lost time, files, work, money, life?? —This is getting to my nerves the guys at the Apple shop are like: Hmm, here comes the MacBook guy again!?!?!
I didn't drop it, I treat it like it's my baby. It just died there sitting on the desk.
What kind of crappy hard drives are they putting in this machines, that last just seven months?
Is this the next RSS, behold the new HDDS (Hard Disk Dying Syndrome!)??
    Best,
    Pedro

  • Macbook Hard Disk Swap Woes

I recently purchased a hitachi 7200 rpm 200 gig hd, when i placed it into my macbook rev C (2.0 core 2 duo) the laptop ran at 150 degrees according to istat pro. This was at idle! I used an external enclosure and carbon copy cloner to clone the hard disk then simply replaced it. I decided to use this drive as a time machine drive and got an Apple 160gb Fujitsu drive from OWC. I cloned it and installed it and again, 150 degrees. I doubt that I am installing it incorrectly as each time i replace the stock drive the temperature returns to 108F at idle. What am I doing incorrectly? Is there a firmware update I have missed?

Hey inducedaphonia and welcome to the forum -
During your switching process, are you moving the EMI shield from the old (original) drive to the new one? You'd be using a Torx T8 to do this. -GDF

  • How do you erase a macbook hard disk and reinstall OS X ?

I just upgraded to a MacBook Air.  Now I want my wife to be able to use my older MacBook (2009 model).  What is the best way to erase it completely and then put her TimeMachine backup from her (even older) MacBook (2006) on it?
She is runnign OS X Snow Leopard.  I am running  OS X Lion on the 2009 MacBook.
    Thanks in advance!

    Drive Preparation and Reinstall
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, if there's a security concernt, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Upon completion quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once Snow Leopard has been installed you will be able to restore from a TM backup via the Setup Assistant.

  • MacBook Hard Disk Failure

My white plastic MacBook running 10.4.11 won't boot. I get the folder with a question mark in it. I tried several things like mounting the disk from my iMac using Firewire Target Disk Mode, reseating the internal HD, but I wasn't able to mount the MacBook's internal HD. So I tried the DIsk Warrior emergency CD I had made about 2 years ago. When I got to the Disk Warrior application it could not see the internal HD either.
I think the HD is just total toast, and am going to replace it, but I want to check if there is anything else I can try to mount the disk.
Second question, I am going to replace this HD for sure; are SATA II drives compatible with SATA I?

    Try a data recovery application*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html#RECOVER
If they can't see it, yes unfortunately you will have to replace the hard drive.

  • Replacing MacBook Hard Disk

Hi there, I would like to replace my 60Gb MacBook HD with a 160Gb HD and keep my existing Documents, settings and programs.
I understand how to create a disk image on an external 2.5" SATA firewire drive, but once this is done is it possible to just open the external drives caddy and swap the internal and external drives, so that I have the new larger drive with the disc image internally and the original 60Gb internal drive in the firewire caddy as an external back up?
This sounds like a great solution for all MacBook HD upgraders wishing to keep their original drive and its contents (separate 2.5" SATA caddys are also very pricey) but I cant find anything to confirm it works.
MacBook core duo 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   MacBook, Cinema 20", Ipod Nano 8GB
Mac OS X (10.4.8)   MacBook, Cinema 20", Ipod Nano 8GB

Well... most can be opened. However... the companies that make them want to be able to sell you new ones. It's far cheaper to just buy a new drive and pop it in the case... so they sometimes make them tough to open. What I would suggest that you do is just buy an external enclosure. Something like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392009
Then just buy the bare drive that you want. These enclosures are made to make changing the drive easy. It's usually cheaper to go this way as well. Then you can put your old drive in the case and use it as an external drive as well.

  • 13" MacBook AirPort search never stops

On my 13" MacBook Air, when I wake it up from sleep, it quickly reconnects to my home network just fine. But it keeps searching for more networks anyway (e.g., the bars in the AirPort icon keep cycling). If I turn AirPort off and back on, this cycling stops and all is fine....until the next wake from sleep. Any ideas what may be going on?

Did this always happen or just started to occur after making any software updates?

  • Macbook Pro fans never stop running

Hey guys. Ever since this latest OSX update, the fans on my MBP run all the time, nonstop. Even when i've closed down all applications and most processes, those fans still pull 6k rpms. However, when i bootcamp into my Win 7 build, the fans barely run if at all. When i originally purchased the MBP last year, this wasn't an issue at all, but with these latest updates, it feels like things are slowing down and running less efficiently. What's the deal??

They run immediately coming out of sleep. On a restart, it takes a few moments, but they very quickly get up to 6200rpms.
Even now, the laptop has been sitting idle on my coffee table for 3 hours and the fans are both going full bore and the kernel_task process is at 658mb's and 89% of the CPU load. What in the heck is using that kind of power???
Finally, yes it's got enough air. I use a laptop stand or prop it up off the table every time i use it.

  • Time capsule hard drive starts/stops every 5 min: problem?

Every five minutes, whether or not a time machine backup is due, my 1 TB time capsule hard drive starts, spools up, then stops (I used a stopwatch to time the interval).  Is this a problem?  Never happened when unit was new (late 2010), or before Lion.

    Yes, it is a problem..
Firstly check the log if there is a lot of instances of AFP getting logged in and off again.
Try disconnecting everything that is ethernet connected to the TC.. does it still happen.. if yes, turn off all the wireless stuff and see if it still happens.
If it still happens disconnect the wan.
There simply may not be anything you can do about it.. Lion has altered the setting for spotlight to analyse the drive.. but the new firmware also seems to make it worse. Not sure if you can stop it or not.. but it will cause issues over time.. in fact it would be better if the hard disk never spun down than to do it on 5min interval especially if the disk is also parking the heads.
How desperately do you want to pursue the problem??
I would suggest wiping the current setup. And even erase the drive after copying anything you need off it. So you get it back to scratch. You can ring applecare if it is still under warranty. I am not sure they will treat it seriously.
