Macbook Harddrive Replacement and Time Capsule
I'm new to the wonderful world of Macs. I got my first Macbook less than 2 months ago, and am so far loving the heck out of it. The 160GB harddrive that came with the unit is proving to be too restrictive, and as someone who can't really be tethered by an external drive, I've purchased the 320GB WD HD that is mentioned quite a bit in these forums.
When I pop in the new drive, will I simply be able to restore my "old" system off of the TC?
Any warnings? Anything a newbie should be aware of?

Getting naked connection is not always the greatest idea .. a number of ISP have given up as Telstra tend to use ill-trained contractors who swap phone lines based on dialtone.. rather than doing proper line check.. no dial tone.. obviously the line isn't used.. chop it over to another person.. woops it was your naked ads service. Sorry about that.. it will only take us a month to find a free pair and wire it up.
Anyway apply with one of the big ISP ..

Pick if you are going to bottom end like tpg or better end like iinet. It will depend on who has equipment in your local exchange.
Put in an application for ads naked service.. and the ISP will tell you what you need to do.. often it is as stated easier to just get a phone service as well.. both tog and iinet I think will offer full service.
Telstra has to hook you up to phone and then disconnect it. So the ISP can take over the connection .. it is a longer process than you would like and costs $300 or so due to the new line install.
Nothing is done to your apartment.. phone lines are terminated on a patch panel in the common areas of the building.
Once you order you can get a modem.. both iinet and tpg will offer you a modem.. probably free if you sign up for 2years.. otherwise they charge you.. post in dsl hardware in whirlpool.. i am revs per min over there.
Getting a modem and TC setup is no biggie.

MacBook Pro and Time Capsule after adding new wireless router
I have a MacBook Pro and Time Capsule (which functions wirelessly to router and computer). I added a new wireless router (netgear, not my idea) and had to change name of wireless network. Now Time Capsule flashes amber and does not show up in Airport Utility.
Do I have to set up Time Capsule from scratch? If so, if you can aim me to directions I won't have to waste tech support's time.
My additional question on a similar vein: I also have a Time Capsule (second time capsule) which is plugged into the wireless router using ethernet cable for use with a windows notebook running windows 7 which backs up wirelessly. Do I have to change anything on this Time Capsule (second Time Capsule) as a result of change in name of network (I've already adjusted computer to connect to network)?Hi DD,

Time Machine Backup hangs on both USB and Time Capsule

I have some problems with Time Machine backing up my MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I am using the MacBook both in the office and at home attached to a USB hub with KeyBord and external screen. The MacBook is usually closed and I put in sleep mode ("Ruhezustand" in German) when changing the location.
In my office I have a Time Capsule and at home I am attaching an USB 3 external hard disc directly to the free USB port on the MacBook. Everything worked fine for a long time and I did not pay much attention to the updating process itself.
Since a couple of weeks I have the problem, that Time Machine Backup hangs - on both USB-Drive and Time Capsule. This could happen at different positions like 550 MB of x.x GB or 3 KB of x.x GB (Calculating Time Remaining).
The only way to run the backup completely is to restart the Mac. Then everything runs fine and the following automatic backups are running smoothly, too. It seems the problem only occours after moving from one location to another.
I tried checking the Volume of the Mac and the USB drive and also tried repairing Rights on the Volume.
I also tried resetting the pram during the start-up procedure.
Changes I made in the last months are moving from Mavericks to Yosemity, replacing old Cherry Keyboards with Apple keyboards and updating a driver for the USB-Hub including Lan-Access.

MarkusOk, I got a lot of results. I hope this information is helpful. Keep in mind I restarted the machine and Time Machine is now working fine. This will probably be the case until I am in the office again (not before Tuesday).

Windows 8.1 on Macbook Air connecting to Time Capsule
I have installed Windows 8.1 on a separate partition of my MacBook Air. My Time Capsule (2 TB) is visible when I boot to iOS X, however, when I boot to WIndows, it doesn't show in the Network devices list even though the MacBook Air is connected to the Internet through the Time Capsule's wireless network. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to make the Time Capsule available under WIndows? I have turned on Network Discovery and file sharing in Windows.

Although rather out of date it adds bonjour for windows and other small apps which help.
Then in standard Windows Explorer, type the TC IP address directly into address bar.. thusly.
\\10.0.1.1
Now you will need to find out the IP of the TC.. that should now be available in the airport utility you have just installed.
If it refuses to open the issue is firewall .. turn it off.. or it is network is set to work or public location not home.. reset it to home. -

This is crude but if you need a work around, just plug the USB drive directly into the iMac.. copy the files to it.. then plug it into the TC.
You also do not need to use the TC as an intermediary between your iMac and MBP.. just turn on sharing in the computer.. so you can directly copy files from one to the other.. Macs have public access directory preconfigured for each user account.
As far as mounting the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to server.. and type.
AFP://TCname or TCipaddress
Where TCname is the actual name of the TC.. I strongly recommend you follow SMB network rules.. ie if your TC has a name like
Fred Blog's Time Capsule 2445566.
It is too long.. it has spaces and it has non-alphanumeric characters.
Shorten it to FredTC
No spaces no characters that are NOT alphanumeric.
TCIPaddress is simply the standard IP.
You can also use CIFS://TCname which according to the article forces the connection back to SMB1 rather than SMB2 which as usual is broken.
But I would definitely use AFP if possible. I cannot understand the decision to move to SMB as standard. -

i live in a two storey house where i use my airport express to create a wireless network in the main floor, and time capsule to extend it in the upper floor, where my room is. i have like 16 mbps in the main floor, and 2-3 mbps in the upper floor after having speediest.
i used time capsule in the upper floor because i use wireless backup daily and don't want to put internet down while i im doin it and consequently my parent can have internet access in the main floor, am i right? or do i have make just the opposite in order to have a good internet speed?
secondly, while checking airport express wireless mode on airport utility, there is like 4 different type of radio mode(802 11n bg comp, 802 11n 2.4, 802 11n a comp, 802 11n 5ghz) which i have no idea what they mean
what do you recommend?

thank youWhat you have would appear to be working but I can comment how I would redefine your setup. Note that both Airport Express and Time Capsule can function as wireless base stations so you do have wireless everywhere and at all times — using the Time Capsules for backups doesn’t mean your parents won’t have internet access regardless of the where the base stations are located.
You appear to have devices to connect to your network that use the 2.4 GHz band with 802.11g such as the iPhone 3G and perhaps the 5 GHz band with 802.11n such as likely the Macbook Pro if it’s a recent model. The iPhone 4 can use 5 GHz and 802.11n. Can’t comment on the Sony and Samsung but you can check their specs.
Now the Time Capsule (if it’s a recent version), can simultaneously supply 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band signals, but the Airport Express (if it’s recent) can only use one of those bands at one time. Likely the lowest common denominator for your devices is going to be the 2.4 GHz band since the devices that are capable of using 5 GHZ also support 2.4 GHz. If you don’t use 5 GHz, you won’t lose much in a two-storey home because likely it’s the 2.4 GHz band is better signal anyway because 5 GHz signals drop off quickly with several walls/floors to penetrate.
You also didn’t mention if the Airport Express is used to support a printer and/or AirPlay (using iTunes to play on remote speakers via the Airport Express connection) but that might also be a factor in the best location to place the Airport Express. Although the printer could be switched between the Time Capsule and the Airport Express if needed, only the Airport Express will support your remote speakers.
Recommend you use the Time Capsule as the Base station. When using Airport Utility to define the network, after you name your network, etc., select the Wireless tab, check the box “Allow this network to be extended” and set the Radio Mode to "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)”.
Using the Airport Utility, click on the Airport Express; after you define the device and network name, select the Wireless tab, define the Wireless Mode as “Extend a Wireless Network” and check the box “Allow wireless clients”.

Our IMac's hard drive died and we thought great we bought a time capsule to back up the immages and files,except when we had the hard drive replaced the time capsule did not recognize the newer opperating system and would not reboot the files back,so the apple store tech loaded them into a file folder and loaded them to the main screen and erased the time capsule,the problem now is how to load this file back permenantly and watch video's that are stored,when in I Photo when I try to view video content I get a message stating that I may need to download more software to support this format.
If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem. -
You guys have been great so far helping me with the myriad issues I've run into with my Time Capsule (*** happened to the usual Apple ease of use with that, btw?), so I thought I'd throw another question at the crowd:
I have a HP PSC 380 all in one printer/scan/fax. If I plug it directly in to any of my Mac or Windows computers, it detects it correctly and prints fine. If I hook it up to the Time Capsule, it sees a printer but doesn't install the same driver it does when directly connected. As a result, the Mac computers (my mini and my wife's MacBook Pro) see a printer but nothing happens when I send document to print. My Windows machine (running Vista) sees the printer too, but throws up an error 3/4ths of the way through a test page.
Is this printer just not compatible with print sharing or is something not set right?Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at this iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link.
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.

Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if the printer you are interested in is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work. -
My family and I want to access and edit all of our photos that are currently stored on time capsule. She has a laptop, I have a laptop, our family has an imac and iphones. We want to have the changes that we make to the pictures (red-eye correction, contrast, brightness, etc) to be reflected on the time capsule file so that when another one of us goes to print or make a slideshow those changes will take place on another computer because it is all stored on the time capsule. Also, we don't need to store all this info on our computers. Is there anyway to do this with iphoto and time capsule? Apple is usually pretty good about integrating things, but I can't figure out how to do it.
Is there a plug-in that will allow me to do this? Can someone make one?
Google Picasa allows us to do this, which is phenomenal. We are eagerly waiting for Google Picasa for Mac to come out for this feature alone. Thank you for any commentsYou could look into multi user image management applications likeMedia Expression. It would let you put the source files on the server and each user have their own catalog of thumbnails linked to the source files. EM lets you rename files, add metadata to the files, etc. But if you're going to stick with iPhoto and want to have everyone have full editing rights in the library you'll have to put the library on an external HD formatted for OS X Extended (Journaled).
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -

I'm new to macs and moving over in a big way!
I started with a time capsule and all was fine apart from the coverage in the house.
It seemed easy to extend the wifi so purchased an AE 802.11n and extended the network.
It does extend and I can connect to the internet but the network is now really really slow and the time capsule backup wont work.
connection is :
Ethernet modem - Airport express ( as its close to my audio equipment ) - extended WIFI conection via 802.11n.
Any suggestions? why is it so slow?
Im at 7.3.1 firmware on both AE and time capsule and the Macbook pro is at 10.5.3.
Any suggestions?I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36. -

LOL.. pull the old one out.. put the new one in. Setup the new one.. do not copy setting from the old one.. it is better to start over and never copy configuration files.. although you might get away with it.
Plug the old TC into the new one.. change it to bridge mode.
You can then access and copy old backups to the new TC if you want. Although IMHO just keep the old TC for 6months. .then wipe it and sell it or use in different role. Do start clean fresh backups on the new TC.
If that is all useless. ask the specific question and we can try for a specific answer. -
MacBook Lost Connection With Time Capsule, Unable to reconnect
On my first attempt installing time capsule and setting up airport was ok. Then one day, I completely lost the connection. Now my MAcBook can not find time capsule or airport.
I have tried the following:
1. Resetting the Arris modem and the time capsule.
2. Unplugging and disconnecting everything, re-install the Time Capsule Set up disk.
3. Updated software on mac website.
Still., the light continues to blink amber, when I have my computer scan it doesn't find anything. It will not allow me to choose manual setup. This is very frustrating. Please help. I'm about to return it. I'm wasting a lot of time on something that should work.Here is the setup I use to configure my Time Capsule. Haven't had a problem with it since day one - even through multiple reconfigures for testing purposes.

Next, attach an ethernet cable between your ISPs modem --> and the WAN port on the Time Capsule (that’s the little round ‘wheel’ symbol), NOT to one of the LAN ports <•••>.
There should be no other devices between your ISPs’ modem and the Time Capsule.
*Reset Time Capsule*
First, if previous attempts to configure the Airport device have failed, it’s a good idea to reset it following steps outlined in this KB article:

Make sure you hold in the reset switch for a good 10 seconds, then release.
*Reboot ISPs’ Modem & Time Capsule*
Make sure that any time you disconnect and reattach the TC (or any wireless router) to your ISPs modem, that you cycle the modem's power off and on. Sometimes it doesn't forward the IP address assigned by your ISP unless it is rebooted.
If you are using the Time Capsule as your only router then power down your ISPs modem.
Unplug the TC from the wall outlet.
Wait 10-15 seconds.
Next turn your modem back on first. Let it initialize and acquire an IP address (about 30-60 seconds).
Plug in the TC back in again.
After it has restarted (30-60 seconds), the amber light will slowly flash.
*Configure Airport Utility*
Next, launch Airport Utility.
Highlight the device on the left and click “Continue”.
You may be asked if you want to “Reset” or “Restore” one of the configuration profiles. Select “Reset”, and click “OK”.
Name your Time Capsule. Keep it short and simple. Use only letters & number, no special characters.
Enter the password twice and check “Remember this password in my keychain”. Avoid using a “different password to secure disks” for now.
Click “Continue”.
Airport Utility may “discover existing wireless networks”. If the Time Capsule is your only router, then choose “I don’t have a wireless network…”, and click “Continue”.
Name the new network. Keep it short and simple. Use only letters & number, no special characters.
Enter a password for your new network twice, check “Remember this password in my keychain”, and click “Continue”.
Select “Share a single IP address…” and click “Continue”.
If you are presented with a dialogue box warning you of a blinking amber light, click “Ignore”.
At “Select how you connect to the internet” choose the type of service. (Most will choose “I use a DSL or cable modem with a static IP address or DHCP”.)
Click “Continue”.
For “Configure IPv4” choose “Using DHCP”.
Enter the DNS server numbers provided by your ISP. If you don’t know what they are, many have had success using the ones provided by OpenDNS:
208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
For “Domain Name” enter what is provided by your ISP. (i.e. dslextreme.com)
For “DHCP Client ID” enter what is provided by your ISP. (i.e. dslextreme)
Click “Continue”.
Review the Summary and then click “Update.”
If you are presented with +“This device and its network services will be temporarily unavailable”+ click “Continue”.
At “Congratulations! Your Time Capsule is configured…” click “Done”.
NOTE: If, after the Time Capsule restarts, you are present with “Problem 1 of 1: Internet Connection”, click “Continue” and then “Ignore”.
Select “Update my Time Capsule with these settings”, and click “Update”.
When the Time Capsule reappears, click “Manual Setup”.
Select “Wireless” in the toolbar.
Click the “Internet Connection” tab. Here you may see an IP address that looks similar to this, “169.254.96.123”.
Click the “Renew DHCP Lease” button.
The number beside “IP address” should refresh in a few moments.
If the “Update” button in the lower right becomes active, then click it.
*Join the New Network*
Finally, go up to the Airport menu. Give Airport a few moments to scan for available networks. When your new network appears, select it from the list.
At “Mac OS X wants to use your confidential information…” click “Always Allow”.
You should now be connected to the internet.

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer. So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only. How to I make the connections?
Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC. I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so. The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems. I was expecting the same with the TC. But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did. And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else. In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else. I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way. But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems. I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this. Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup. I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart. But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time. If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct? Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
