Macbook has failed me, rufuses to boot.

after 10.5.2 two days ago, my macbook booted up regularly. however after the additional leopard graphics update last night, it no longer boots up at all. i have to use this ****** vista to report the problem. my macbook is right beside me, with nothing but a plain blue screen. occasionaly the mouse cursor appears for about 30 seconds, then dissapears and the screen remains blue. what can i do? if i cant log in apple cant update my mac!!! help!!!

Maybe somebody else could help you with recovering your machine, because from your description I dont know how you would go about doing that. You could run the 'macosx install disk 1'. Just pop it in, and hold down the c key while re-booting. This will boot your macbook directly from the disk. From there you can try the apple hardware test to see if any of your hardware isnt working. You could also try re-installing leopard if it came down to it.

(Sorry, first time user of these forums, and it's confusing in it's own right)

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • Backlight on my 2007 Macbook has failed!!

Hello recently my macbook backlight was flashing off depending on which way i pulled the screen, however it did still work. I have tried to replace the inverter and that hasn't made a difference, obviously it is quite an old model and unfortunately i dont have any insurance. I was wondering if there is any other way this could be remedied at a zero to minimal cost, the display is working as i can see the finder box but obviously no backlight. Any help would be appreciated.

HI I have tried all those suggestions on that site and it still has no backlight, as I've said I have tried a new inverter that also hasn't worked. I am getting video as I can see it with a torch, and I have checked brightness etc, however it isn't making a sound when I press the volume up or down button, could this be related? Is there a way to change the bulb at all? Any ideas?

  • Macbook 10.8.3 Won't boot past apple screen

My macbook has not been able to boot from being totally off without reinstalling OSX every time.
    1. does anybody else have this problem?
    2. is there a way to fix this on my current hardware without replacing stuff?
    3. what is likely the problem?
    4. will replacing the hard drive possibly fix this?

More details, please. You get a boot failure. You reinstall OS X. The next boot is successful. Then what?

  • My HDD has failed.  How do you re-install OS X to a new drive?

When trying to install Mountian Lion, I discovered that my HDD has failed.  I can boot into my Windows partion but not into OS X.  I am fine with installing a new HDD myself but how do I get OS X back onto it?

Well, you have no choice but to find your original Disks, there are two: An Install Disk & an Applications Disk. If you can't find them, you'll have to call AppleCare to get replacements.
If you had a clone of your system, this would be easy, so next time keep a bootable clone handy. When you get your original disks, you can then use disk utility to format the drive, then reinstall SL, update to 10.6.8, then redownload Lion. Once you download Lion, make a USB install stick BEFORE you upgrade to Lion. That way, you're covered if something like this happens again.

I understand that your desktop computer is giving you an error message stating that the boot disk could not be detected, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To ensure that your hard drive you computer is trying to boot from is in working order, I recommend following the steps in this document on Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8). This should help determine if there is a fault with the hard drive.
If the hard drive passes all of the required tests, I recommend returning the BIOS back to its default settings by following this document on Recovering the BIOS.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

My Macbook has died. Mail and Firefox wouldn’t boot up today and so I turned it off at the button. Now I’ve just got a spinning wheel and nothing works. In the middle of doing a magazine too, altho I did some backup on a stick.

Try rebooting while holding down the Command and R keys (two keys).
If you see an icon for Recovery, select it and continue.
Then select Disk Utiltiy and press Return.
Now select the hard drive and the Repair Disk.
Quit DU when that is done and restart.

  • My late 2006 Black MacBook has a gray screen and won't boot.

My late 2006 Black MacBook has a gray screen, folder icon, and flashing question mark.  I replaced the HD with a Western Digital 500 GB and had no change.  What's wrong with my MacBook?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the hard drive Operating System data is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Once it has finished booting and you Choose Your Language and you are at the Install screen launch Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then select the First Aid Tab run Repair Disk and if that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • "ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." On HP Envy 20

Hello -  I have an ENVY 20 All-in-One PC and up until yesterday it was running fine. When I turned on my PC, a black screen appeared with the message: "ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." I followed the directions on this post and ran a Hard Disk Test in BIOS. I've run both the Quick Check and the Extensive Check and both were passed. I'm not sure what to do now. Any solutions?  Thanks, mgmartinelli

Mgmartinelli, welcome to the forum. It appears that you may be getting some conflicting information.  The error message that you first received is normally attributed to a failed/ing hard drive.  You may want to disconnect the drive and reconnect it to see if that helps. Please click the "Thumbs up + button" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

  • Macbook Pro won't connect to internet, says ISP has failed.

For months I have not been able to connect to my internet at home from my MacBook Pro. I have tried restarting the router many times. All of my other devices, as well as my roommates' devices connect to the internet. My wifi icon at the top says that it has connected but that the ISP has failed when I refer to the diagnostics. I've tried countless troubleshooting articles and none have worked so far. Any suggestions?

Im going to answer my own question. Problem Fixed! After I was on the phone for over an hour with a senior advisor we found the problem was with the download or the instilation. He had me Shut Down Computer and hold down Command and R then press power button hold this down until the recovery window pops up. Then reinstall mountain lion os system. this does not wipe out documents, photos and apps like windows does. I didnt know this since Im new to MacBooks. Hopefully this may help someone else.
PS I beleive In order to do this you need to be plugged into your router to have internet access. They had me do this. This will take about an hour but now Im up and running.

  • Macbook not booting up so I resorted to Disk Utility...it has been stuck on "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required"

So my Macbook was not booting up so I resorted to using Disk Utility...it has been stuck on "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required" for over two days.
Has anyone else had to wait this long?
I have read that I should leave it until I get another message but I saw this reply on another site....
"Hi everybody, the message: “Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.“ means: the Disk Utilities is telling you what it is doing: 'Disk Utilities': "(I'm) Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required (& I'm done with it)." So when you see this message, the DS (Disk Utilities) is done & you can close the application"...
Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Doesn't have to be another MacBook - any Mac with FireWire (400 or 800) will do. FW 400 to 800 adapters or adapter cables should be available from any computer store.
    Instructions for FWTDM -
Disconnect all other FireWire devices from both computers before you use FireWire target disk mode. Do not connect any FireWire devices until after you have disconnected the two computers from each other or have stopped using target disk mode.
To use FireWire target disk mode
        1.    Make sure that the target computer is turned off.
        2.    If you are using an Apple portable computer such as a PowerBook or MacBook as the target computer, plug in its AC power adapter.
        3.    Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer can be powered on.
        4.    Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
        5.    When you are finished copying files, locate the target computer's hard disk icon on the desktop of the host computer and drag it to the Trash or choose Eject (or Put Away) from the File menu.
        6.    Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
        7.    Unplug the FireWire cable.

I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I would be happy to assist if needed as there are many models of HP Notebooks, I would need the model number.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Please respond with which Operating System you are running:
Which Windows Operating System am I running?
Here are links to recovery may fail and troubleshooting recovery problems. You might need to disable any virus protection software to do this. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.
    Please let me know.
