MacBook HD Failure - worry of carrying over file structure errors?

Hello all
Please excuse my intrusion .... I'm a composer and usually hang out on the Logic forum but have popped in to see if anyone has any experience with MacBook Internal Hard Drives?
I have a 2008 MacBook Duo 4,1 and have today had a hard drive go down for the second time this year. The Hardware test says ... ALERT ERROR 4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0) I tried to bring it round with Disk Warrior but no joy.
My worry is that having once again installed a new hard drive and re-built everything from a Time Machine back-up, a clever Mac friend suggests that I may be carrying over a FILE STRUCTURE ERROR that exists on the TM back up which could cause the same issue over an over again?
If this is a possibility - is there anything I can do that negates my having to re-install everything again from scratch? (including copious authorisations and licenses for a huge amount of software from Quicktime AVID codecs for use with locking movies to my DAW and Music Sample Libraries!)
Does anyone have any experience of File Structure Errors being carried over from HD back ups?
Many thanks in anticipation of help.
Best
Dick

Hey Dick,
just to get down and technical, since it feels like you did not understand all the facts (no offense, please, I will try to explain).
When a hard drive fails mechanically or physically, and, let's say, makes the computer crash, there is a pretty good possibility that files that were open at the time of the crash were not saved properly, and thus are broken. It's just a consequence from the failure and the crash, if it happened. It's not DUE to the failure itself.
So, if you have a TM backup, which, as was stated before, is just files copied to some other drive somewhere on the network, there is no way you could reintroduce some physical damage, that was on your internal drive, back to a new one. If you HAD a utility that would do a 1:1 copy of a drive, there would be the possibility that defective blocks would be copied, but not with TimeMachine.
Let's be theoretical.
Let's say your hard drive failed in stages. Let's say you were working on a project. And let's assume you had a bunch of files open, when the drive initially failed. The system crashed, and some of those files were damaged. Let's further assume that you rebooted the system, and did a backup. And let's finally assume that you THEN changed the drive and restored the backup to the new drive.
Now, in THIS particular case, that would mean that there is a possibility that you backed up one or more damaged files to the TM (since a damaged file is still that: A file) and then restored it.
Now let's finally assume that THEN, after the restore, was the first time you tried to open those particular files after the first crash. You would then see that they are broken.
To sum this up: That's the only scenario I can imagine how to get something damaged "back from the grave". Apart from that, it may just be bad luck that your drive failed for the second time, and I am pretty certain that you don't have a defective backup.
I hope I made some things clear. Please let us know if you have any further questions, and don't be afraid if they might sound dumb to you. There's no such thing as a dumb question. Just dumb answers
i.

  • File structure error

My source code file structure is the same as my Tomcat structure:
    /app/web-inf/classes/beans
    1) In my JSP (stored at /app/entry.jsp), the only way I can access my bean is by specifying class="beans.ErrorBean", then putting my bean in the /beans folder and specifying 'package beans;' in my bean.
Why can't I have my bean in my 'classes' folder, no package declaration, and in my JSP use class="ErrorBean"?
    2) Now, I have a class (/classes/Aclass.class - no 'package' declaration) that I need to access in my bean. But since the bean is in a package below, it cannot find Aclass. How do I get to it? If I move the bean up to the /classes folder, it sees Aclass, but then my JSP doesn't see the bean.
This structure all worked fine for another app where I didn't need to access a class in the /classes folder with one of my beans, but now it's an issue. If it matters, I'm using Sun ONE IDE.

The structure has worked on other applications for me, with only the beans in the classes/beans folder having a package declaration. This time, I can't even get all my code to compile.
Also, I thought when you have a package declaration, your classes should be in a folder with that package name. If your classes are in the /classes folder, I don't think Tomcat needs a 'package classes;' declaration. I haven't needed to use the 'package' declaration much, so I could be wrong.

  • Migration-from macbook to macbook pro-how do I transfer my files???

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering with anyone could help me with the migration system. I just bought a macbook pro online and I will be receiving it by tomorrow; however, I'm not familiar with the migration system, which I was pretending to use in order to transfer my files. Does anyone knows how do I perform it? Also, the drive that I'm migration could be any drive that contains my files, right? Plus, should I start the computer and transfer the files or can I turn in, add my personal information and set up mail account before migrate the system?
    I'll appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    M

I recently performed the migration through the migration assistant going from an iBook G4 to a MBP 2.2. I transferred all my user data except the applications, and it worked flawlessly. Apple sells a firewire cable for $14 to connect the two machines. Took less than 1 hr to transfer ~15 GB of data. I didn't have to type in a single password, and even my preferences carried over. When direct linking, the MacBook will be put in target disk mode. The migration assistant will walk you through the process.
You can run migration assistant after setting up items on the new machine. Just run the program from the Applications -> Utilities folder.

  • What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro (it has been taken out of the computer) to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfer files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro, which has been removed from the computer, to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfere files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

At the apple store they said I needed an esata to usb wire.  But looking at wires on line has been confusing.  Is sata the same as esata?  How do I know if I need a usb 3 or usb 2?

  • Any way color overlay could be carried over from psd to Reflow?

    Hello,
We are really excited about Edge Reflow in the office, but one pain is that layer effects in the psd don't carry over to the Reflow file. A lot of times we designers use color overlay on things like copy in various parts of the layout to see different comps and make the best design solutions. It would be great if we didn't have to change the color of the type before running the generator... Am I missing a setting? If this isn't something we can change on our end, are you guys working on it?
    Thanks,
    Marc

okay I see that this is getting little more complicated.
So now I see it isn't anything with windows.
I do edit the picture in raw and it looks good and save it as psd then when I open it in photoshop it looks right and if I select view-proof colors then it comes out with that crazy color as it will look after I save it.
So going from raw where i edit it looks good then after I save it even if I save it there as jpg and open on photoshop it alway changes when it is checked on proof color.
Is anyone on here that know whay this is happening? how do I make the pictures stay the same after I edit them in raw?

  • Text boxes not being carried over in Captivate 5

    Hi,
I am trying to import a PPT presentation into Captivate 5. The process is simple enough however, once the slides are converted, it's nor carrying over the text boxes. The slide titles and inserted diagrams are there but no text!
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Would it be possible to share the PPT or CPTX file so that we can investigate the issue?
    Thanks,

  • Hello - When I installed OSX 10.8 on my iMac, all my bookmarks and the bookmarks bar were gone.  On my two MB Pros they carried over with no problem.  How can I retrieve them?  Thanks

All my bookmarks and bookmark bar entries were gone when I installed Mountain Lion on my IMac.  When I installed in on my two MB Pros, they carried over without a problem.  How can I retrieve them?  Thanks.

Make an archive copy from one of the MBP (File>Export Bookmarks).  You may not need it, but if things sync the wrong way on iCloud, you may lose them on all your devices.
Then check out iCloud on the iMac. Is your stuff on iCloud.com?  Maybe try logging out and back in again.

Just upgraded Elements 9 to 10.  My neat image plugin did not carry over.  Can anyone help me?

Go to Program Files or on 64 bit systems Program Files (x86) and find the file NeatImage.8bf in the PSE9 plug-ins folder. Copy it to the PSE10 plug-ins folder.
Alternatively go to Program Files\Neat Image and copy the file from the source.

  • Categories carry over from Entourage to IPhone ?

    Hello all.
We're all still waiting patiently in Australia for the IPhone (only a month or two we believe...).
My query revolves around syncing and what gets carried over.
At the moment I run a Palm Treo 680 (nice phone), using a plug in via ISync to sync the Entourage files via ICal, etc and back to the Treo. The only problem I have is that the categories I set in Entourage don't carry over in the sync process, it then becomes a "note" on the calender event/contact.
If I create an event, assign it a category (eg Holiday), will the ITunes sync process bring all of that over (and visa versa ?). This for me is critical, as I used to be able to do this same process seamlessly on the PC and Outlook 2007 (which I ain't going back to anytime soon !)

  • DNG Conversion Of Sony ARW Not Carrying Over In Camera Lens Corrections

One of the great features of the Sony NEX-7 is that the NEX-7 makes automatic lens corrections for vignetting, chromatic aberration and distortion problems. These corrections are written to the file and the preview. However, when converting these images from ARW to DNG the correction data seems to be lost, and the images revert to their uncorrected state. This requires all images to then be re corrected with the Adobe lens profiles, which is both tedious, an extra step, and also seems to produce results that are somewhat less optimal than the original corrections made by the camera.
Should not the ACR Converter and Lightroom retain the lens corrections made by the camera?

    A Tonal wrote:
This is one of those confusing issues where the way Sony describes the feature makes it sound as though it's part of the ARW format, and the way Adobe describe ACR and DNG makes it sound like this would be one of those manufacturer specific details that DNG is supposed to convert into a the Adobe format.
Yes, that might be so. It's similar with the manual of my Nikon D600. Nowhere does it say explicitly that all these adjustments (including lens correction, Active D-Lighting, etc) work only for the JPGs. And it cannot be otherwise.
A Raw image is not defined yet, not written in pixels yet, heck it is not even an image.
The Raw image is only affected by the exposure, that's pretty much the only thing. Even White Balance is nothing but a metadata tag that - luckily - is read by Lr.
A DNG is Adobe's answer to the various Raw formats. But it is designed to behave like a Raw image. Therefore you cannot expect that camera settings that affect JPGs only carry over to DNGs.
    A Tonal wrote:
There are so many features on cameras that are only supported with JPG output that it almost makes it not wroth bothering with RAW, as by the time you get to the end of the process, with all the extra steps and work involved in handling RAW, you pretty much wind up with something that looks like a JPG anyway, and you had to give up using some of the camera's features to use RAW.
This shows that you don't understand what Raw is and what its advantages over JPG are.
I would recommend that you educate yourself about the advantages of Raw. Your photography would benefit from this, believe me.
Google "Why should I shot Raw?" and you will find lots of good webpages.
Finally, Raw shooting is much simpler than shooting JPGs where you always have to fiddle with the virtual 100s of different settings for JPGs.
What do you have Lr for? In Lr you can adjust your Raw image by looking at it on a large calibrated monitor, whereas for the settings in your camera you have to rely on a 3" monitor - at best.
Make your life simpler and your photography better: Shoot Raw.

  • Batch Renames do not carry over to Finder

When I Batch Rename my photos in Adobe Bridge, the images file names appear to change in Bridge, but when I close out of Bridge and open my images in Finder the images keep their old names and do not carry over the new Bridge batched rename.
Can anyone tell me how to get my files to permanently change their names from Bridge to Finder?

Working across a server in general, is not supported by Adobe.
Bridge in particular is very sensitive to any problem(s) in your server configuration, which we cannot troubleshoot for you.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Data Merge-how can I get underlines to carry over?

In my database file (excel converted to text for import), I have a lot of items that have underlines.  Of course when converting to txt, the underlines dont carry over.  Is there some way around this other than manually re-adding the underlines after I do the completed merge?  This is a LOT of underlines!

As promised, a simple script. Select the entire column -- vertically -- with the original single words, and run the script. It will search-and-replace this word in the cell next door with Underline On. If there seems to be a problem, the offensive word and its row number are saved, and displayed after the script has ended, so you can check if everything went as planned. Possible problems it catches are: the word does not occur at all in the next cell, or it appears more than once (in the latter case, all occurrences are replaced, though).
Copy, paste into a plain text editor (Notepad or Textedit in plain text mode; or, safest option, Adobe's own ESTK Editor). Save into your User Scripts folder as, ehm, make up a good descriptive name will you? Just make sure to end it with .jsx
//DESCRIPTION: Select a column of cells, then run to underline each of these words in the next column

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.
