Macbook HD Noise

Hi,
I bought a 13" Macbook Pro 2 months ago, It came with the stock hd (Hitachi 500gb 5400 rpm).
At the beginning, it wasn't making any noise but now started to make noise when I open applications.
Does anyone knows how to I solve this issue?

You have AppleCare, give them a call.

  • My macbook makes noises when i turn it on.

i recently bought a macbook pro 15 inch, the 2.66ghz one and when i turn it on it makes noises but the noises sound like they are in rhythm and are maybe playing a song? is that normal?

Me, too! It sounds like the optical drive is doing a little tune! The actual sound has that optical drive buzz, and it starts on first B-flat above middle C (forgive musical dorkiness - if it helps, I could actually transcribe it) ... just a couple seconds long. It happens at start-up (including restarts) and wake-up. It's pretty loud, actually, like it would be disruptive if it happened during a lecture ... What could this be? Is it ominous?

  • Macbook Display - Noise, Interlacing/Dithering, and Offset

    Hello,
Starting yesterday, my 2011 Macbook Pro (specs below) has been having issues with its display / graphics card.
Frequently, especially while using resource-intensive programs like Chrome or Logic, my display will begin to introduce noise, then go black for a second, then come back on with the screen's image offset, wrapping around from left to right:
After a couple seconds my computer freezes (beach ball, but can still move mouse). Then my keyboard becomes unresponsive, leaving me no option but to shut down.
I double-checked the connection between the display and motherboard - seems fine. This is more likely a problem with the video card, I'd imagine, but I'm no expert. Thoughts?

  • Dropped macbook  making noises from optical drive, won't accept CD's/DVD

    Hi,
I am new to the forum, and unfortunately I am posting because I have a problem. I dropped my MacBook (which I've had since August 2006) from a desk, about 2-3 feet onto tile floor. Luckily, everything turned on and is working just fine, except everytime I turn my computer on and everytime it wakes up from sleep, the optical drive makes lots of noise. It sounds like it is trying to eject a nonexistent disk, except it makes that typical noise 3-4 times in a row before stopping. Also, it will not allow me to insert disks (I can get them almost all the way in, but it won't go completely in). I checked in my system profiler and it shows the details of my optical drive, and it is a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857. I called Apple and told them what was happening, and they told me to bring it to a local authorized dealer. However, I am a college student and it's really hard for me to find time to give up my computer for an undetermined amount of time while they wait to diagnose it. Also, I have a feeling it is going to be really expensive, considering they want at least $100 just to look at it, before the cost of labor and parts to actually repair it. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice on alternatives or experience with this type of issue would be very much appreciated!

My computer just started having the same problem, only I haven't dropped it. I did, however, inadvertantly knock a hot chocolate over, and a little got into the optical drive. I turned the computer off immediately, cleaned it, and left it to dry for a couple hours. But now, whenever I close the lid & the computer goes to sleep, the optical drive keeps making an eject noise (every TEN SECONDS, incredibly annoying). When the computer is open and running, this doesn't happen.
Also, I just popped a DVD in there to test the functionality of the drive, it recognized it and went straight into DVD Player, so that's fine. However, it's hard to get discs to come back out ... it looks like the spilled liquid has dried but stiffened the felt(?) along the insert slot for DVDs/CDs ... when I try to eject, it makes a noise like it's trying to get the disc out, but can't. I used a paperclip (gently!) along the opening and that loosened it up enough to get the disc to eject, but it's still dirty... any ideas on how to clean that without taking the whole computer apart?
I'm having one other issue now, and I don't know if it's related... when I use the trackpad, it won't recognize it if I use my fingers to tap & select items instead of clicking them with the button. But I can still use two fingers to scroll. I checked in System Prefs, it says I should be able to do all the mouse functions by tapping the trackpad, so I don't know what the problem is. :-\

  • 17" Macbook Pro Noise & Trackpad Click Sound

    Hi all,
I just got a new 17" MBP delivered from Apple, its a fantastic computer. I've upgraded from a Titanium Powerbook.
I notice when I move the new Macbook I hear a sound like a light saber from the left side, very low, its only apparent when the device is tilted, I assume its the HD, (I haven't installed the ssd in my signature yet, so still on the 7200 stock HD), is this normal, I never heard it from my Powerbook?
Also the trackpad click noise and feel are not the same as the ones in my local apple supplier, I have a noticeable click sound pressing the trackpad, and some slight resistance before the click engages, but the store ones I tried have no resistance before the click engaging and there is no audiable click from the trackpad. Is this because mine is new? Will mine go "soft" like the store models I tried?

    Hi,
Regarding the "click" sound: as was already mentioned, there should be some click and resistance in your trackpad, specifically as you move down the pad from top to bottom. If you're convinced that these are more audible and resistant than they should be, you may be right: when I first got a unibody MacBook in early 2007, I had to return it to the Mac Store immediately because of a similar problem, and they ended up replacing the entire chassis as a result. Unfortunately, the same problem ended up coming back again, and I obstinately decided to live with it instead of doing the right thing and having it fixed, so I dealt with a progressively loud trackpad for the next few years.
My advice: if it doesn't feel right, make an appointment with your nearest Mac Store and have them look at it. It won't cost you anything, and the worst that can happen is that they tell you it's fine (which you can again verify while at the same store by trying other machines of the same make and model).

  • Santa Rosa Macbook fan noise fix, sort of

I don't know how many of you guys noticed this, but when I got the new Santa Rosa MB it was definitely louder than my previous C2D Macbook. Even when idle doing nothing.
I found out that the lowest rpm on the new Santa Rosa goes at 1800, which in a quiet room at night is way to loud personally.
In order to fix it just download fan control 1.2 and then put the lowest RPM setting to 1000. For me that instantly made the MB super quiet again.
Hope that helps to those that wish more silence out of the Santa Rosa books.

I made an appointment at the Apple Store I got it from (4 days after I purchased). I told them about the weird clicking noise and they took it to the back (store was pretty loud) and came back in a few minutes and offered to exchange it since I was within my 14 days. The new one is way quieter and only makes fan noise with intensive processes (as expected). Doing some research after the fact, I believe my issue was the ticking/clicking one described here: http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=MacBook#.22Mooing.22fan_noise.2C_Ticking.2FClicking_Fannoise Overall, they handled it pretty well (I was prepared to field an inquisition about this manufacturing flaw, luckily I didn't have to and they recognized the problem pretty quickly), and I'm finally enjoying my new MacBook.

  • Macbook strange noise and 3hr battery life

    Hi,
My new macbook (before-june09 model) is making a strange DVD Drive noise when I turnit on, restart and wake from sleep. It also gives me only 3hrs of battery life.
I recently exchange my 2.5GHz macbook with NO noise and 5 hrs of life because I wanted to upgrade for this 2.66GHz, 350 GB, 4MB RAM when the price dropped due to the new models.
Now I'm starting to regret,is anybody having the same problem, or I just got a bad one.
    Thanks

This is the temp on my uni 08 vintage after adding a 256GB Crucial M4. That's right, 150 degrees Fahrenheit when measuring with a meat thermometer just above where the SSD resides in the chassis. The battery lasts about 38 seconds when I take it off power. .... I'll try the 0309 firmware to see if that helps.

  • Black Macbook thud noise problem

Ok, here's my situation. I'm hearing this thud or click hard drive noise from lower right side corner of
my macbook. From the original stocked hard drive I heard this noise, and I thought it was hard drive
failure, so I bought a new hard drive which was WD 80 g, and after couple of month I heard this thud
noise again, so I bought another H.D which happened to be my third hard drive which is about 1 month
old from now (WD 120 g) and guess what? I'm hearing this thud noise again. So I'm suspecting that,
this cannot be possibly hard drive issue. How could it be hard drive problem if it makes thud noise
in every 1-3 month after hard drive life is normally at least 1 year old?
Does anyone come up with same issue and resolve the problem?
This is so frustrating. I cannot buy new hard drive every time this thing occurs.
I'm really disappointed by the quality of macbook comparing to my 3 years old Powerbook is still
    strong.
    Here's my spec of hardware.
    2 GHz intel core duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    serial number is 4H632xxxxx
    SMC version: 1.4f12
    hard drive: WDC WD1200BEVS-22RST0
It could be some firmware issue or motion sensor issue
If anyone come up with any solution will be appreciated...

When you replace the hard drive did you take the shield on the original drive and put it on the new one? Is there a chance the noise may be coming from the optical drive? They are side by side. The noise you are describing sounds more like a dvd drive noise. Have you returned ny of the drives under warranty to the manufacturer? The new ones purchased should have still been under warranty.

  • MacBook speaker noise / hissing

My MacBook (purchased March/April 2007) makes a hissing/popping noise from the speakers (i assume) after being on for about 30 minutes. The volume and mute buttons have no affect on it, it will continue indefinitely. Very annoying and it makes it impossible to concentrate let alone listen to music or watch itunes videos. Here's a link to a YouTube video i made of the noises.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcK0VJMM5z4
If I need to buy AppleCare to get this fixed, I will.

    EDIT:
After starting up on the DVD and still hearing the noise, I decided to instead restart and zap the pram. Give that a try... so far so good.
It's done by holding down Command-option-P-R on restart (right after the first chime & before the screen come on), then releasing after the second chime. Or for even more drastic measures if that doesn't work, look here (if you dare ^_~ ): http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
(I'm not familiar with the new Intel Macs & only have PPCs, so if someone else can direct correctly otherwise, please do so ^_^ )
    Anyways, good luck!

  • Macbook Fan Noise at Low RPMs

My Macbook makes an annoying buzzing noise when the fan is running at low rpms. It sounds almost like a motor running and is very irregular. If I use smc fan control to up the rpms to near 3000 this noise stops and becomes the usual noise for a fan running at higher rpms.
Is my fan broken or put in incorrectly? Is there anything I can do?

To add to Michael's statement. There is a 14 day window for returns. If you just got it return it and get a different one.

  • MacBook weird noises

I don't know how long it has been going on, but my macbook has been making a pretty strange noise. It is hard to describe but its like a whining high pitch noise, almost like the computer is trying to constantly process something.
Does anyone know what this is?
    Thanks

I've had this problem for a while too. I have one of the first Unibody 13" Macbooks and when my battery is getting low, or sometimes even when plugged in the bottom left of my MacBook starts to squeal. Whilst I have no real solution to the problem I have found one thing that works instantly.
I have a system preference tool called BetterTouchTool installed on my MacBook that lets you assign pretty much any multitouch action you can think of to any event you want to occur. I have 5 finger tap set to send my display to sleep. As soon as the screaming starts, I 5 finger tap and the noise stops immediately. I then just wiggle the pointer and I'm away again, no screaming in earshot. Strange I know, but it works every time for me.

  • New White Macbook Odd Noise?

Hi, i have just unboxed my new white macbook, i have noticed that it makes a really strange hissing whining noise that comes from the area where your letters Q W E are on the keyboard, what is under those letters, is it the processor or something? also i noticed that the sound changes when i scroll on the screen.
It seems a bit loud, and to say i have only been using the macbook for a few hours its already doing my head in!
It makes no difference whether the macbook is being charged or not, surely this isnt normal?
    Any help would be great.

My new Alum MB had the same sound. I'm not sure anyone knows exactly what it is but I've heard about the same problem with MBPs and MBs even on older models.
However, my sound went away after one day and hasn't come back. My sound varied with backlight intensity. Does yours?
One thing I could suggest is to reset the PRAM and SMC. Shut down, unplug the magsafe, and hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Then put everything back, hold down command-option-p-r until it chimes twice. Last thing I would recommend is to make sure you have all of the updates installed.

  • Older MacBook Pro noise

Since installing Snow Leopard, the laptop is noisy.  I'd like to see a picture of what moves: that is, what do the moving parts look like?  There is vibration under the area left of the touch pad.  What is making the sound and what does it mean ?
I disconnected the 2TB external drive in case that was a factor:  no difference.

Three components would make noise: the fans, the hard drive, and the optical drive. Where you are describing it is hard drive - on some models the optical drive is on the right side under the palm rest. Assuming there's no media in the optical drive the only sound and vibration from that region would be the hard drive. A hard drive isn't perfectly silent and can make a noticable click as the read/write head moves from track to track. Excessive clicking though can be an indication of a drive going bad.
