Macbook HDD died?

So I was working normally like always and my Macbook froze all of a sudden. When I powered it off and back on, I got the white/grey screen with the Apple, but it wouldn't move from there. So I tried it again and then I got a grey folder with a question mark. So then I tried it one more time and all I get is the white/grey screen. I restarted once more holding down th C button and the grey folder w/ question mark comes up. But that all that happens, nothing more. Anyone have any clue as to whats wrong or how I could possibly retrieve my files? Thanks!

When you restarted while holding the "C" key down, did you have your Leopard disc in the MacBook? The "C" tells the mac to boot from CD. If you didn't, then do so, and run Disk Utility from the Leopard disc. If you can see the hard drive, then maybe run a repair permissions on it. If you can't see the drive, then yes it may be shot.

  • MacBook HDD dead; looking for a replacement if data recovery isn't possible

The HDD in one of my MacBooks has died - ticking at startup, and the file folder with the exclamation point ( ! ) on it upon boot. This just happened randomly one day, as I was watching a movie and the movie froze. I shut the computer down for the night, and the next morning this was what I was presented with upon startup.
I've tried a number of things - rebooting, cold restarting, resetting the PRAM, and booting from the OSX CD to use disc utility, nothing works. In disc utility the HDD isn't even recognized (it doesn't show up all all, only my SuperDrive). I've even removed the HDD and set it up as an external one to my second MacBook with no luck (it, again, doesn't mount, and so isn't detected in disc utility).
Now the issue that I have is, will it be possible to salvage this drive (if for nothing else than just the files on it)? The files aren't dreadfully important, and I don't want to spend a whole lot of money to recover them. I've tried using the demos of File Salvage, Data Rescue II, and Drive Genius 2 but none of them have been able to help me. Is there another way to mount the drive, so that I can access and/or recover my files?
If there isn't, I'm going to purchase a new HDD (this is under warranty, so it'll be replaced, but I want a backup/upgrade as well). What is the maximum capacity HDD that a MacBook will be able to use? I know that it's a SATA HDD, and I can easily get HDDs that are 500GB, but will those be compatible with my computer?
    Thanks in advance.

It does sound as though your drive has expired...try placing the bad drive in your freezer for a while and then place it in the external case you mentioned and see if you can get it to mount....I have seen reports here that it can help the drive to mount although I have not tried it myself...
As to the size of the drive..it needs to physically fit in the MacBook...9.5 mm in height and 2.5' SATA...storage capacity is not the issue...500 GB's is fine

  • Macbook Pro died and now won't connect to the internet

I just got home from college and my Macbook Pro died while I was using it because I couldn't find the charger in time to plug it in (stupid mistake that I never ever let happen usually). After I found it, plugged it in, and started it up again, the date and time were messed up on the computer. I reset them to normal and tried to connect to the internet using my old settings, but it hasn't connected.
I've tried a lot to try and fix it so far and it still won't connect. Other computers and devices (HP and Dell laptops, iPod touches, PS3) that my family have and use all work and connect to the internet fine.
I've tried to run the Network Diagnostics and after plugging in all of my settings and information, it says that it can't fix it. Next to it on the left, the Airport, Airport Settings, and ISP are all green...but the Network Settings is yellow and the Internet and Server are red.
I've deleted my internet settings and tried recreating them and that hasn't worked either. I have also tried the Assist Me portion to make a new connection - no luck there.
I've also tried resetting the Macbook Pro and the router (an Actiontec router for Verizon FIOS) multiple times and that hasn't worked either.
I unfortunately can't use Time Machine either because I don't have an external hard-drive and haven't set it up.
I just don't really know what to do at this point. Hopefully someone can help me out!

Same problem--hoping to get Apple's attention by throwing my hat in the ring with everybody else.
Things tried (now approaching 2 weeks of failure):
    Deleting "Airport" Connection, Adding/Restarting/Re-adding/etc.
    Archive Install
Erase & Install (full reinstall done by Genius)
    Card Replacement
    Bluetooth Replacement
    Zapping the PRAM
    Trying different connections/routers/locations/connection types/etc.
Visited Genius bar 4 times now.
Have been without the computer longer than I've been with it.
Trying to change over from a horrifically bad Dell to a refurb Mac worked once before...though I've come to believe: It's not the refurb, it's not the hardware, it's not the settings, it's not the router, it's not the install, it's not the associated software, it's not the connection, it's not the Super Moon that comes up tomorrow...It's a hardware issue as this has been happening since I opened the computer out of the box, and we have an identical computer running identical programs on an identical network with the identical updates and NO problems whatsoever--I'm assuming the innards may have been cheap'ed out somewhere to save a buck or a connector is faulty after a particular build date?
Full symptom list (in no particular order):
    Connection Timeout
    Connection Drop
    Not recognizing Airport
Card Recognition but endless connection time
    IP non-recognition
    Random re-connect
Indication of connection without transmitting/receiving data

  • Old MacBook Pro Died, Trying to Transfer Creative suite

    Hello!
Wondering if anyone can help me, my old MacBook Pro died (Logic Board faliure) , I had Adobe Creative Suite CS4 on it and I want to get it on my new computer.
I got an enclosure for the harddrive and can transfer files to my new computer but after transfering my Adobe programs it won't let me open them, says there is some sort of licencing issue (error 6). I'm just wondering if there are some files I am missing or what, I can't deactivate it on my old computer as all that is left of it is the harddrive. I also don't have the install disks as I moved and lost them... If anyone can help me out with this I would be very greatfull.
    Regards,
    K. Spencer Jones

Of course you need the serial number. And yes, it’s on the DVD case or sign into your account and you’ll find it there….if you registered.

  • My old MacBook pro died, got a new Mac can I use my cs4 with my new computer?

MMy old MacBook pro died, got a new Mac, can I use my cs4 with my new computer? Do I need to buy a new license?

Using Time Machine, or any other such program, to transfer Adobe software from one machine to another works probably less than five percent of the time. Uninstall from your new machine. Run the cleaner tool (do a search for Cleaner Tool on this site if you don't know what it is). Then reinstall properly from original media or downloads.

  • My MacBook Pro died suddenly when I was removing a flash drive (LG up3 neon ps4) and is now both unresponsive and unchargable. Is there anything I can do to fix it on my own? (There aren't any apple stores in my current country)

My MacBook Pro died suddenly when I was removing a flash drive (LG up3 neon ps4) and is now both unresponsive and cannot be charged. Troubleshooting.... Is there anything I can do to fix it on my own? (There aren't any apple stores in my current country)

    Hello antol1n1,
Sorry to hear your MacBook Pro is not charging or powering on.  Sometimes a System Management Controller reset can help with the following charging and power issues:
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
To reset the System Management Controller on your MacBook Pro (with a built-in battery) , you can follow these steps:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find more information in the full article here:

    I hope this helps!

Try rebooting while holding down the Command and R keys (two keys).
If you see an icon for Recovery, select it and continue.
Then select Disk Utiltiy and press Return.
Now select the hard drive and the Repair Disk.
Quit DU when that is done and restart.

If you hve tried the bag of uncooked rice trick and nothing is helping, only option is the Apple store genius bar for an out-of-warranty replacement.  For the iPhone 5 that is $229 in the US.

I have had two previous work MacBooks that died and both were authorized, however, now I can't reauthorize my new laptop because I have reached my limit of 5 systems authorized when technically, I only have 3 authorized.  Any suggestions?

  • Macbook HDD reset after repair. Will autosync wipe iPod?

My girlfriend's Macbook just got back from being repaired from Apple due to a broken iSight.
In the process of her repair Apple wipe her harddrive clean and consequently her iTunes library was lost. She has all of her music on her iPod, but her iPod settings were set to autosync the iPod when she connects it to the Macbook.
I hope to use some software to take the music off her iPod back onto the Macbook HDD, but my fear is that when I connect the iPod iTunes will automatically lauch, try to sync and then wipe her iPod clean.
Is there a way to make sure this doesn't happen so she doesn't lose all of her music?

My guess is you want to find an Apple certerfied repair center or you are in the market for a new unit, even if that is until you can do something.
If it is under AppleCare, call their #800.

One you start up the new one for the first time, Setup Assistant starts and offers you the option of migrating your old Mac to your new Mac with Time Machine, among other choices, as the source. You can also use Migration Assistant (in the Utilities Folder) to do the same thing.

  • MacBookPro got extremely slow recently. Is my HDD dying?

Just about a week ago, my Macbook Pro (13 inch, late 2012, standard configuration) suddenly got extremela slow (although RAM and CPU are both rather low).
I get the beach ball doing very simple tasks like opening a new Tab in finder or even by hovering over the red X from a window.
Apple Hardware Test didn't find anything wrong, as well as the disc Inspector, but when I was running a benchmark (iQuickMark) i got reeeaaaaaally bad results regarding the hard drive (image attached).
Strangely when an app or a process is running, it's running totally fine. I even could play a whole concert with MainStage2 and as soon as the performance-mode was active (after about 10 minutes of loading) -> no more lag at all.
That's why I think there is a problem with my HDD.
Do you think it's dying (after 1 and a half years?) or is there a different problem.

    New information...
    The Hard drive seems fine!
I exchanged it with a brand new Samsung SSD, and put the old HDD in a USB-case.
Now I can Boot from the USB-Drive without any problem. But the new(!) internal SSD doesn't work.
When I try to format/partition it via the disc manager, I get an error message when trying to format in MacOS extended format (no problem formatting in FAT).
So my new guess is, that it's the Hard Drive Controller that may be problematic.
Is there any way, this could be fixed? Or am I doomed to always have my drive connected via USB?
