Macbook Headphones Pop Noise

Hello,
I recently purchased a Macbook 13" Retina.  Thus far, the machine has been working wonderfully.  However, I was listening to an online course via headphones today and noticed that, if I stop or pause the audio... after 30 seconds to a minute or so, there is a popping noise.  Seems to happen each time there is any audio and it is then stopped.
Not a big deal, but I want to make sure there is nothing wrong with my system.  From what I've researched, this may be the audio driver going to sleep to save on battery life.  If that's all it is, I'm fine with the sound.  Has anyone else with a Macbook noticed this or has any other information?
Thanks,
Tom

This sounds like a hardware problem but first lets try going to "Audio MIDI Setup" in your Utility folder and checking the settings.
An just to make sure you plugged your guitar into the mixer (no amp in between), mixer (line out / tape out) is plugged into macbook Line in.

  • MacBook Pro Popping Noise PLZ Help!

Hello I have a macbook pro that I recenlty got around August of 2013. after a couple of months I started to get a strange popping sound coming from the inside of the computer near the right. I recently went to the Genius Bar and they have replaced some things like my opitcal disk and such. At first it was ok, but as soon as I got home (of course) I heard the annoying loud Popping noise. I asked if it was my hard drive and they said nothing was wrong with it. I hope I'm not the only one this is  happening to. Does anyone have any Idea what it could be?

Since you are still under warranty, call tech support & tell them exactly what you stated in your posting.  More than likely, they will order the repair shop to examine your comp a little closer.

  • Speakers/Headphones Emitting "clicking/popping" Noise

I am having a really hard time explaining this, so please bear with me while I try to explain it.
I purchased my macbook pro at the end of January. A few weeks later, I noticed that there was a "clicking" or "popping" noise coming from the laptop. Thinking it was the hard drive, I kept a close ear to the computer, only to realize when I had my headphones on that the noise was coming from the speakers.
The noise comes at random and is just a random series of clicks/pops. I cant seem to figure out what is causing this issue. This happens regardless of whether I am plugged in to a wall outlet or on battery, eliminating the possible cause of a power issue. This leads me to a possible hardware issue in the sound card.
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue? Is this something I need to take to the Genius bar to have looked at? Its gotten very annoying as I'm a bit of an audiophile and it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Thank you in advance for your help - it's much appreciated!

Ok I'm not sure if we're having the same issue now. What my problem was I would hear a ticking sound at random moments, usually twice at a time. I did some further research myself after going to the Apple Store and them not finding anything that stood out. It turned out to be the (SMS) Sudden Motion Sensor that I was hearing. Random annoying little sound that I could also hear in my headphones. I usually work on my laptop on my lap and it moves a little bit at a time and shifts largely when i get up or move around. Sudden and distinct movements activate SMS which is intended to save your HDD and its data from damage from being dropped. I was able to find instructions on how to disable it to do some testing and that confirmed it. So I'd recommend checking this link out. This might be the issue you've been having as well. Good Luck.

  • Broken Macbook Pro/charger. Popping noise while charging.

I've got the latest Macbook Pro, and while it was charging I heard a popping noise from what I'm pretty sure was the charging port while it was connected. I didn't think anything of it at first, but then I found that my charger wasn't working. The light was not lit on the charger and my laptop didn't recognize that it was connected.
I do not have another charger so I don't know if it is my charger or laptop that is broken yet, but does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?
    Thanks for your help!

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service. I assume it is still in warranty.

  • Mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina Making Popping Noises

When my MacBook is opening up to 15 tabs in Firefox or anything intensive I hear popping noises coming from my computer. I held down the D key at startup and am doing the full testing as suggested and am hearing the popping noises there to. What should I do? Thanks, Jeff

Make sure your Airport card is turned off. There have been a lot of people reporting problems with pops and clicks after the latest Airport card update, and turning the card off seems to alleviate the problem.

  • MacBook EFI Firmware has the popping noise gone for you?

Installed the firmware upgrade today and eagerly hoped the annoying popping noise would magically disappear. Hope disappeared instead - it is still popping away. Any one else have a different experience?
    Message was edited by: macvicar

I installed the EFI Firmware update 1.5 on April 14th. I'm using a Motu 828mkII with GarageBand and Logic and I now have the popping noise (a "vinyl", popping sound that seems to happen during recording, sometimes during playback).
Does anyone know why this was introduced? From other posts it appears that this was already a problem but I never had it until I installed the 1.5 update.
Another reason to not take the latest updates i guess...this is really frustrating. I also updated my Motu drivers but that did nothing. It appears this is definitely related to the firmware since I see all the other posts here in the Apple support forums.
    Anyone from Apple out there??

  • Pop Noise from Audio Out While Using iTunes 9.0.1

I have a black MacBook with Leopard 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0.1. I have a a pair of computer speakers plugged to the MacBook's audio out minijack. Every time I run iTunes to play my music everything goes fine until I stop the music (you know with the space bar or the stop button). 30 seconds after I stop the music a loud pop noise comes up and stops, as if some electrical device was receiving a charge of electricity. When I play music back again on iTunes, the same noise comes up again with the music and goes away immediately while the music continues all right.
This is what I have done so far:
Change my energy saving parameter to several different configurations (perhaps the hard drive stopping when unused was the cause) but none fix it.
Turned off Airport...did not fix it
I timed the pop noise and it happens exactly 30 seconds after I stop my music on iTunes and then again 30 seconds after music has been stopped unless I start playing the music back again and the pop noise sounds again.
Any help would be appreciated as I use my MacBook to play music sequences for my band (I am the drummer) so the darn noises come through our PA system (and I also tried my small computer speakers and it does the same thing).
    Thanks,

I spent a good amount of time reading several discussions. Apple is aware of this issue but no solution as of yet. The popping noise is "normal" behavior and happens because of how the sound system is programmed in the computer.
The solution (sorry for the bad news) is to not use the audio out minijack at all. Instead, get an audio interface that connects to your USB port and then route the output signal from your audio interface to your speakers, headphones or PA system. The popping noise will not sound. I tested it several times.
If the only cable you have is a minijack male type then go to Radio Shack and get adapters. I had to get me an adapter that takes two RCA males and converts them to a female minijack type.
    Good luck.

  • Popping noise while sleeping

I started to notice a "popping" noise (about 1 Hz) when I got external speakers for my Mac Mini. It occurs when the Mac is sleeping and the external screen is on (but sleeping its own "sleep").
If I disconnect the analog audio out (from where the external speakers take their signal) the popping ends.
If I connect headphones to the same jack, I hear no popping in them.
If I hit the power button on the external screen and power it down, the popping ends. It will not return eventhough I power the screen on again.
If I disconnect the USB cable that power the speakers from the Mac, the popping ends, but returns when I connect again.
Any clue to what this problem comes from? Some kind of ground loop?
    /BE

Seems we've isolated the problem to Electrical at least. Sounds like a Ground loop somewhere.
    See this nice article...
    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov04/articles/computerproblems.htm
Audio equipment which uses a double-insulated design needs no earth connection, and so is less susceptible to earth-loop problems. Such equipment will often use two-core mains cable, which has an oval cross-section, and the mains plug will sometimes use a dummy plastic earth pin, as shown here.
Disconnecting the earth wire inside a mains plug might solve an earth loop problem, but it's a dangerous solution, because you're removing an essential electrical safety measure.
And my best guess at this point is the PSU for the Speakers.

  • How do you solve popping noise??

Does anyone have a solution, or can suggest a course of action to address the popping noise that occurs when my macbook Pro's speaker turns on, say when launching a song from itunes. It is not super annoying yet. But it would be nice to solve. Is this a 10.4.8 thing or software glitch, or hardware related. I have a new MBPCD2 2.16

Are there any technicians from apple that review these forums? I have the issue of the popping noise and was very concerned, but it make sense that for power saving that the speakers get de-energized.
    Should I be concerned?
I just bought this MBP. You think that something that costs this much, wouldn't have this kind of issue. I've been faithful to PC for 15 years and finally converted to MAC because I was getting tired of PC issues (like this) It is extremely pleasing to fire up my mac and not have to work on it, check virus definitions. I kinda don't know what to do with my time now!!!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Popping noise after export

So my song plays just fine in GarageBand, but when I export to iTunes, there are some popping noises that come in (very subtly) at the same parts in the song. Here are some troubleshooting things I've already checked:
    1) It is not my speakers -- I've tried two different pairs of headphones, and another set of speakers.
    2) I do not have the decibels amped in the GarageBand edit.
    3) I've tried reducing the decibel levels to all negatives, and it still pops in the same spots.
    4) I've tried exporting the song in all different formats, compressed and uncompressed.
Anyone know of something else that might work? Thanks!

Did you change your song's tempo after recording? If GB has to re-render a sound file, it often introduces artefacts.

  • Adaptor made a popping noise...

And now is no longer charging my Macbook Pro. I'm a little hesitant to keep plugging it in, as I'm a bit worried that the "pop" noise could be some wiring or some such inside the adaptor, and I don't want it to catch fire.
    Could someone please help?

Call Apple & they will send you a replacement or take it to an Apple store for a replacement.

  • Popping Noise Then No Sound

I have a mid 2007 macbook with 10.4.11. I was listening to things on the internet (youtube, etc.), and it was working fine. I shut off the sound (F3), and a while later I wanted to listen to something else. I pressed F3, and I got a loud popping noise instead of the normal one. I pressed it again to shut off the sound, and got the same noise. I did this a few times, and it kept happening. I tried listening to sound with it turned all the way up, and there was no sound coming out of the speakers. I closed it to look at the speakers and see if there was something in them or something (there wasn't), and it went into sleep for a little while. When I opened it again, the sound was working perfectly fine.
It's still working like usual now - should I take it to Apple and see if something's wrong, or was this just a one time thing? If it happens again, should I just close the top again? What caused this?

Even if it's fixed now? Because it's been working fine since then.

  • Popping noise on Creative 6600's / Audigy

    Hi there,
I've been using this configuration for a while now and haven't had any problems with it. Until now.
The speakers seem to have developed an annoying popping noise, but it only happens in 3 out of the 6 satellite speakers. The noise is the same level no matter what the speakers are set to on their wired remote, and only stops once the speakers reach volume 8, and then the sound is awful because the speakers can't actually cope at that level.
I've taken apart the little remote and cleaned everything out which seemed to stop the problem for about 60-20 seconds, then it started again.
The noise will stick around for a few hours and then dissapear for a couple of minutes ata time, before coming back to annoy me again.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks in advance...
    Stom

My Powerbook G4 12" makes a popping noise before and after (there is usually a delay after a sound is played) a sound is played through the built-in speakers. It could be that when your Powerbook goes to sleep, the speakers were activated and then they are "turned-off," which results in a popping sound. To test if this is the case, plug in a pair of headphones and put the Powerbook to sleep. If it doesn't make the popping sound, it is just the built-in speakers. If it still makes the sound, then the problem lies elsewhere.
