MacBook Heat

Has anyone found that the MacBook really heats up when on for several hours?
Can anything be done about this?
Doug
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Arumdev,
I had this problem once with a Dell Laptop I had. I put it "to sleep" tucked it away in the case, and flew across the country with the computer in the overhead container. When we got to the destination, I pulled it out, and notice right away that there was a problem. I could feel the heat through the case! Plus, there was a smell... (Yikes!) To make a long story short, this was a brand new notebook and I fried the battery! From that point on, I barely got two minutes out of the battery. Until I bought my first Apple last summer, I had never had any luck keeping a batter "good". I get 3.75 hours out of my MBP at the moment running just Entourage, iTunes, and the Palm Desktop App. I don't think that is bad at all... AND it's about 50 minutes more than I ever got out of my PB 12" running the exact same apps.

User Tip:  How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
    Per your user manual:
Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
Call Apple Care if you have it or your computer is still under warranty.     Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • Aluminium MacBook heats up very fast

Why does the left side of the MacBook heats up so fast? And it can be really really hot at times.
Does any other MacBook user encounter such problems too? Is there a solution to this?

I have only had my mac for 3 months and already when using safari for a while it starts heating up a lot. When i then check the activity monitor it says that CPU is 100 % and then I have to close safari down and restart it. first then it gets silent. but this should not be the case with a new mac, is something wrong?
Yes, if Safari alone is indicating 100% CPU then something is wrong. Of course, this assumes that you don't have several windows or tabs open within Safari each of which is displaying some type of animation or video. If you do have multiple windows or tabs open in Safari try closing those which you are no longer using. However, even one animation or video can take quite a lot of processing power so don't be surprised if your MacBook gets a little warm or "hot" while it is displaying same. This is also true (or even more so) when playing video games.
In any case, the definition of "hot" or "too hot" depends entirely on your experience. I know that my previous PowerBook G4 ran much hotter than my Aluminum MacBook. A few parts of the PowerBook G4 could get so hot that it would actually burn your skin (if you were unwise enough to remain in contact with the case after the pain began). In that sense, my Aluminum MacBook never gets "too hot" and in my experience it is actually a "cool" or slightly warm running notebook computer.

  • HT1338 When the MacBook heats up the touch pad is erratic

When the MacBook heats up the touch pad is erratic

Take it in to an Apple Authorized Service center (Apple Store) and have it checked out. There are problems where the battery swells up and puts pressure on the bottom of the trackpad causing erratic issues like that.

  • Macbook heating after 10.5.7 update

i downloaded the 400 mb update and installed it .
at first it crashed after restarting so i had to do a forced shutdown
    then it worked normally...
the mac then started to heat to 65-70 at minimum even if i'm not running anything
i tired installing the update again (same downloaded one) and it seems to PARTIALLY solve the issue .
now it heats every 30 minutes or so and the fans roar then it goes back to 60 (my macbook at 10.5.6 used to give me 54 degrees !!)
the other problem is that my external drive stopped working : sometimes it discovers it , sometimes it doesn't , and it keeps asking me for my password whenever i try to copy anything to the drive and even if I type it , it'll tell me that I don't have privileges to do anything!!!
    my question is :
could a 60 degrees heated laptop be harmed on the long run??
would it help if i installed the COMBO update ??

Well, just to make sure the 10.5.7 update was installed correctly, I downloaded the Combo update, rebooted the Mac in Safe Mode (SHIFT key held down), re-installed via the Combo update, and rebooted.
No improvement. CPU temp still gets up into the low 60's when the machine is just idling along. I'm going to try an "Archive and Install" of OS X from the CD I got with the Macbook, apply the 10.5.6 Combo update, and see how that goes...
And yeah, I'm a bit disappointed with Apple. If an open-source project run by volunteers like Debian Linux can find the resources to do decent regression testing of OS updates, surely Apple can as well.

  • MacBook Heat Issues

Today I received my MacBook (1.83 GHz).
I have had it sitting on a flat stable surface, as Apple tell you to, for the last 5 hours.
The hinge is hot to touch which is fair enough.
However the left hand side where all the sockets are is also hot to touch.
It feels like warm air coming up between the keys on the keyboard.
Sitting typing this at my iMac I can feel the heat on my arm from the MacBook sitting beside me just as if I was sitting beside a fire.
I think it would not be possible to use it for a whole day in the same way as all my other computers.
I tried turning the Energy Saver settings down from performance as they suggest. This has made a slight improvement but I would expect to be able actually type at the keyboard in Normal setting instead of having to go to reduced power.
Before anyone asks, yes I did check the vent for the plastic.
Is this the same kind of experience others are having with the MacBook?
I'm going to give it a full test of sitting on my desk powered up all day tomorrow and then see about sending it back.
    MacBook 1.83 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I agree the MacBook get very very hot underneath in the upper left quadrant. It's not too hot to touch but I would venture to say that if this MacBook were to be on the bare skin of a child it will hurt them or cause them to shed/thro/drop the MacBook to the floor in a hurry at the very least.
I've been running Front Row to view shared iTune's purchased TV Videos on my LR TV set for several hours. My iTunes server is my PowerMac G5. The base of the MacBook is very very hot during this playback and is certainly not comfortable residing on my lap.
It's debatable whether Apple will do anything about this (if they even can) until someone clearly hurts themselves and it becomes public knowledge.
This is a shame as the overall MacBook is a wonderful product IMO. However, this is one flaw that cannot be ignored.

  • HELP Macbook heats up!!

Hi so after my Macbook has been on about 10 min the bottom of it heats up to the point I can't rest it on my lap without a blanket or pillow covering my legs....
It's a late 2008 macbook, I got it in december for x-mas.. any advice? Should I take it in to the store?

Never put the computer on a pillow or blanket! This will cause more heat and possible damage to the computer. The computer should be operated on a hard flat surface that allows for proper ventilation. Ideally the rear of the computer should be elevated at least 3/4" to allow good ventilation. Room temperature should be kept at or below 75ºF (24ºC). There is a reason Apple does not call them "laptops" anymore.
The computer is not intended to be used on your lap. See Apple Portables- Operating temperature.

  • I download a game from app store and when i start to play my macbook heats up

when i download a game from app store and start to play it my macbook starts to heat up very quickly making me to delete the games in order to come to normal.why is that?i mean i wont be able to play any games ? because i tried that not only with one specific game but with many

The MBA may be used for light game playing. It's not designed for heavy games that demand lots of CPU and GPU power. So you need to determine if the demands of the games meet what the MBA can deliver. It's also possible you are trying to play a game version that is not wholly compatible with the version of OS X in use. This can cause issues with compatibility. It's important that your MBA possesses the minimum hardware needed for a game. Note that having the minimum hardware does not mean that the MBA is suitable hardware.

  • Fixing the macbook heat issue

    Hi,
There is a fairly simple solution, to at least reduce the risk of damaging your macbook by letting it run at high temps. I bought my 2.0GHz macbook over the weekend, it was idling around 70 - 75 C. Thats a little high in my book.
I put the macbook on the vantec lap2cool laptop cooler that I have for my AMD64 HP laptop. Within about 30 minutes of running, the macbook was running between 42 C (idle) and 60 C (being taxed). Now the vantec is pretty cool, but its a little bulky for the little macbook.
I picked up a targus cooler for about $24 at the local walmart, its keeping it idle around 48 C, and under normal conditions (text mate, iTunes, Firefox, Thunderbird) its running around 54 C. The targus cooler is pretty quiet, slim, but a little cheap. They sell some high-powered solutions on newegg.com with better CFM and higher RPMs.
Now I'm sure a lot of typical mac users are going to have a fit about using a laptop cooler that makes the macbook a little bulker, but its way better than the damage your going to do to the macbook by running it hot on a daily basis!!

Intel processors (at least recent ones) are well known for having heat related issues. AMD processors offer better price/performance with reduced energy consumption and output. My HP zv5000z which is AMD64 based, has two large fans on the base, and kicks off a fair amount of heat exhaust. That however is heat thats NOT in my system. If I use it for games, then I'd be crazy not to have it hooked up to the Vantec Lap2Cool.
Apple in my opinion are taking a bit of a gamble. They've had to trade-off heat issues, performance with keeping the system quiet. To me, kicking the fans in on the macbook is a last ditch attempt to keep the system from keeling over, hence the loud noise (high RPM fans). What Apple is likely gambling over is that most users will run the machines in a "cool place" and the average user won't tax the system. Your business, designer, etc types aren't going to be playing games on it. They are gambling that the system will hold up to the level of heat abuse until the warranty runs out, or you purchase AppleCare. Either way, I assume they don't lose money.
In terms of melting, I seriously doubt you'll see physical melting of the system. What you are more likely to see is heat related damage to electric components (either the processors themselves) or surrounding components, resulting in system failure (or odd issues like display problems, random crashes etc). Lets just say its in the best interest of the health of your system to keep it cool.
The fact that Apple has corrected this on the MacBook Pros with firmware / hardware changes, would suggest there is some teething issues with the move over to Intel, and perhaps a shift in the type of customers buying the macbook.
With the market being so competitive, do you really think Apple is going to say -- "Hey these Macbooks look nice, but they overheat, you need to get Apple Care because they'll fail sooner than expected, and you should buy a laptop cooler to extend the life of the product". This adds what $300.00 to the price of the laptop, thats already slightly higher than lightweight options from vendors such as Dell, HP etc. When you go to the Apple Store and the person working there insists that you should buy Apple Care because the system is going to fail sooner rather than later, that tells you something right there.
Now if a laptop cooler keeps the system running between 43 C and 60 C instead of 60 C and 90 C, then aside from your own comfort with the thing on your lap, keeping the system cool is a good idea. Unless you like to return things to the Apple store?

  • Expected cost to replace macbook heat sink

Does anyone know how much it would cost have have apple replace the heat sink in my early 2008 model macbook? The warranty is obviously gone, but other than the fact that it overheats, the computer is in fine condition. here are my basic specs.
    2008 model mac book (black)
2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo prcessor
2 gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (upgraded from 2 GB by user)
Intel GMA X3100 144 mb graphics
    running lion OSX
I don't trust myself with opening up the main casing, I barely trusted myself upgrading the RAM.
    Approx cost anyone?

The heat sink and fan are an assembly. What makes you think there's a problem with the heat sink specifically? Have you reset the SMC?
Laptops with a battery you can remove
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Macbook heats up using ext display

My macbook 2.16GHz is dimming so I plugged in an older LG display and put the MB into clamshell.  I notice that the MB is getting pretty warm.  Is this because the lid is closed.  Not only is the screen dimming and so is my eyesight.  I'm wondering if heating up is normal, or if the display is too old and a newer one would be cooler?   I really like the big screen but can't afford and iMac.
    Thanks,
    Connie

I'm using a macbook with Snow Leopard but the closed lid option was clitchy.  We are supposed to put the MB to sleep and then open the lid ant the MB display would stay off.  Didn't always work.  The MB had a heat problem which caused a Kernal Panic yesterday.  Not receiving any replies from this question I began again searching for one.  I did a search of these discussion boards and couldn't find the link below because the way Discussions now works it didn't show up.  So, I searched Google.  It found the link below.  End of part one.
I discovered the magnet fix in the link below which is primarily used for Lion, but I wanted a simpler fix for Snow Leopard.  What I discovered is that all you have to do is Pass the little magnes over the sweet spot and the MB display turns off.  The magnet doesn't have to stay on the computer sweet spot.
This makes me happy because who likes the idea of a magnet on their Macbook?

  • Macbook heat up issue

    Hi,
I have a Macbook (Early 2008), I've been using it for a while with no problems at all. I'm running Lion (10.7.5) and everything was going smooth until this recent issue started to annoy me so bad, that I can hardly use it now.
Previously, whenever I'd watch an online video, the temperature would go up to 80° Celsius. If it were a long video, the temperature would hit 86° Celsius and the laptop would go to sleep mode. That was fine, it made sense to me that it needed cooling and since its an old machine, can't expect more from it, anyways it would wake up and resume activity as I pressed any button on the keyboard. On average use (web browsing, running apps and etc), the temperature remained between 60° to 65° Celsius. Since last night, the laptop constantly heats up even if left idle. The temperature is fluctuating between 73° to 80° Celsius. I tried playing a YouTube video and the temperature went up to 90° Celsius, the laptop went to sleep mode, but the fans kept spinning at full speed endlessly. I pressed spacebar but it didn't wake up, tried other buttons and the power button too, but doesn't work at all. Normally when in sleep mode, the sleep mode indicator light would be pulsing, but now I see its just lit, no pulse. I had to put unplug the power cable and even remove the battery to shut it off and then start it again. Same thing happens over and over again.
When I restart the laptop, a dialog box appears saying "You computer restarted because of a problem." and displays some crash report.
Can anybody help me fix this issue?

Thanks for the quick response Mike! I hope this is the info you've asked.

  • Macbook Heating

How hot (degrees) is too hot for the macbook?

Before the fan behavior was regulated by firmware, mine would go up in the mid 80s (celsius) and would become buggy in the high 80s. Never had a heat-induced shut down, but others have reported some, with their cpu temps in the 90s.
Right now, mine hovers around 60 doing regular stuff, and will heat up to around 70 under intense load (with fans ramping up).
Hope it gives you a little insight.
Keep in mind, every machine behaves a little differently. Some run hotter, some cool. From what I've read, mine is within the average range, maybe a little hot.
