Macbook+iMac Xgrid Netowrks

Hi there,
I'm thinking about getting an iMac and I currently own a Macbook. Would it be possible to create a network so that the iMac utilizes the Macbooks resources and even uses its display as an extension, like how is down with an extra monitor?
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Xgrid does not require Server, any install of OS X can be setup to be the controller or an agent. The problem is you have to have programs that take advantage of XGrid, most do not. I use Visualhub and have used the XGrid capabilities between my MBP, my MB, and my iMac and it worked great but only when you have multiple files (it won't break files apart, it'll just send whole files to be processed). It doesn't just use the other systems resources for everyday stuff, unfortunately.

  • MacBook/iMac won't boot if iPod is connected

Neither my iMac Core 2 Duo or MacBook Core 2 Duo will boot when my 5th generation (mk 1) iPod is connected. The Mac just sits at the grey screen that initially appears when you first switch the Mac on. No Apple logo, nothing. As soon as you remove the iPod the Mac boots. I have tried leaving the machine for 20 minutes but it still just sits at the grey screen if the Pod is connected.
    anyone else seeing this?

If you have the dock disconnected (and everything else except an Apple keyboard and mouse, and the iPod) and it still happens, then the first thing I'd be wondering about would be a conflict with the driver software for one of the other devices.
One good first step might be to make sure that there are no "non-universal" device drivers installed - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303209 for details.

  • Sync to MacBook & iMac?

I travel with my 30 MB 5th Gen. iPod and MacBook. I have the iPod synced to my iMac in the office, but frequently need to recharge the battery to the iPod while on the road. I tried to do this recently and the MacBook re-synced the iPod to iTunes on the laptop, when all I wanted to do was recharge the iPod's battery. Now that I've re-synced the iPod back to the office iMac, how do I recharge the iPod battery while traveling (using the MacBook) without over-writing the iPod's contents? I don't have iTunes in the MacBook and iMac synced (should I?). Thanks!

Either connect the iPod to your computer with the FireWire connection whenever you want to charge it, or follow the instructions in this article.

  • TS2972 Connection Issues with Macbook, iMac, and Apple TV 3

I have an Apple TV 3 (ATV3) and my iMac connects via Home Sharing just fine, but my MacBook running 10.6.8 doesn't show up, nor does it recognize the iMac in iTunes. All devices have Home Sharing turned on using the same AppleID. Any thoughts as to why my Macbook seems to be the odd one out?

I had this problem earlier and was able to solve it by checking the display setting in the System Prefrences. This link will help you. http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=B%26sec tion=4%26tasks=true

  • MacBook & iMac G5 Connected to Time Capesul via Airport- no internet access

Intel MacBook and iMac G5 are connected to the Time Capsule- both show a WiFi connection in the top corner of the screens- except only the MacBook has an internet connection. The iMac (PPC) and the MacBook are running 10.5.5. When I run Airport utility on the iMac, is reads that it is unable to find any Apple wireless devices. I am remote, so I am not picking up other rouge signals. Any ideas?

    what's the difference between accounts?
My guess is that there is configuration setting, specific for the AirPort, that is conflicting with the Belkin router. When you created a new user profile, it used a default configuration that was allowed it to connect.
I would further venture to say that it may likely be a particular setting that got you access to the school's network that is causing the conflict.
Ok, to try to resolve it so that you can go back to use your original profile, we will want to first try to clean up any saved Preferred Network in that profile. So, log-off the new user profile, and then, log back on with your original profile.
Using System Preferences, we will want to first delete all of your saved Preferred Networks. (ref: System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort) Delete all of the Preferred Networks entries, and then, click on OK.
We also want to remove any saved keychain entires for AirPort connections in the OS X Keychain. You would do this with the Keychain Access utility that you will find in the \Applications\Utilities directory on your Mac.
In the Keychain Access, look for entries with the Kind of "AirPort Network Password." These may have different titles when connecting to non-AirPort routers. Regardless, these would be the saved credentials (network name & password) that you would have entered when attempting to connect to a wireless router with your MBP's AirPort. These entries were created when you responded with "Yes" when you asked if you wanted to save to the Keychain.
When done removing the entries; log-off, and then, log back on with your original user account ... and then try accessing the Belkin's wireless network with your MBP again.

  • SMB file copy to Macbook/iMac

I am unable to copy files larger than 944kb to either my iMac or Macbook from an SMB NAS. I can copy any size file to the NAS, delete it but cannot copy it to the Macbook or iMac. Installing DAVE Network solves the problem but that app costs plenty. I never had this problem with 10.4.x.
Any one got a solution to this - I currently connect via FTP to the NAS to copy files to the desktop but via FTP I cannot copy to the NAS or delete files.

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and type:
    sudo chown -R $UID
followed by dragging the folders into the Terminal window, pressing Enter, and providing your administrator password; nothing will be displayed in the Terminal window while it is being entered.

  • MacBook + iMac: identical mirrot

    Hi All,
I currently have a MacBook with two system accounts on (one admin, the other standard). I'm also purchasing an iMac and I was wondering how can I obtain an identical mirror of the two Macbook users on it, using my home wlan. Any help appreciated.

When you purchase the iMac, connect it to your MacBook via a firewire cable and use the "Migration Assistant" to move all of your files, folders, applications, users, and settings over.
This is very simple to do. It is called "Target Disk Mode"....
    Enjoy.

  • How do I set up email accts so that they are coordinated between my iphone, macbook, imac?

my iphone, macbook, and imac email accts are all set up as imap accts but I have to treat email individually on each device.  SSL is off but server port numbers are different.  how should this be setup so that what I do on my laptop email is automatically done on the iphone and imac?

That can only be done if you have an IMAP or exchange email account.  POP3 accounts won't sync changes across your devices.  If you have a POP3 account you can ask your email provider if they have an IMAP option.  If not, you would need to switch to an IMAP account such as iCloud email, Gmail or Yahoo.

  • OfficeJet 6700 Printing on MacBook & iMac

Our OfficeJet 6700 has been printing great with a wireless connection on our Windows PC for a year.  However, we just purchased a new MacBook and iMac and are having problems.  The operating system on both is OSx10.9.  When we first set up the printer on the new computers, they prompted us to install new drivers, which we did.  They will print, but we have to turn the printer off and then back on for each separate print job.  I have tried turning everything off and then back on incuding the wireless router, but it still does the same thing.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Belkin routers do not support Macs very well.
Try this: get into the router settings and disable the ICMP Protection (to enable Bonjour).

  • Anyone come up with a docking solution for MacBook- iMac

I still miss the days with the DuoDock.
I use my laptop heavily for work but when I'm home I'd love to just slip it (with lid CLOSED!) and plug a single cable in and have the video be presented on my iMac 27" (perhaps as a Spaces as another desktop screen).
Is there a solution for this?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
Depending on the age of your iMac, this may be possible. I have included a couple of links that I would recommend taking a look at below.

  • MacBook/iMac and two Factor trusted device

    Hi Guys,
Is it possible to have a MacBook Pro as a trusted device for two factor authentication?
I am signed into iCloud and 'Find my Mac' on my MBP, however it is not displaying along side my iPad and iPhone as a potential trusted device.
Googled about can't find anything confirming?
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    John

Unfortunately, I don't think so.  It has to be an iOS device with Find My iDevice enabled, or a device capable of receiving SMS messages to be a trusted device.  At the present time, Macs using Find My Mac are not included (although I'm not sure why).

  • Facebook doesn't have all facilities on iPad that it does on MacBook/iMac

When on facebook on the iPad it doesnt show who in your friends list is online, nor is the facility to instantly chat with them.
Also when viewing the window with the list of your friends, the facility to scroll doesn't work, it moves the whole page up or down rather than the list of friends within the separate window, so you can only view the first half a dozen or so of your contacts.
Anyone have any answers/solutions to this?

The way to do it is to go to news feed, this has your online contacts on the right hand side, when in panorama.

    Hello Spiceheads!
During recent years the number of Apple-products in our enterprise has increased quite a bit. This comes with a whole lot of issues for us, as they are not nearly as easy to manage centrally or troubleshoot when they finally go wrong (I admit, that is not as often as PCs), let alone deploy to new users! Active Directory support is poor at best - our latest tests with it a few years back gave pretty much worthless results and we never picked it up from there. Our Mac users manage their own machines entirely.
I know Windows 10 and how to deal with it is the new big thing to discuss right now, but what do you guys do with people who insist on bringing their own Macs - or departments that insist on running Macs and just end up paying for it out of their own budget(!) - and then, for instance, want to print, access SMB...

  • Cannot send nor receive email on new iMac; migrated settings from MacBook

I just recently bought a new aluminum iMac. I migrated files & settings, including Mail settings from my MacBook to the iMac. Despite the copied settings, I cannot send nor receive messages on the new iMac. I have always been able to send & receive e-mail on my MacBook, so I would think the same settings should work on the iMac.
I have tried Connection Doctor, and I am getting successful connections on both the POP Account and SMTP server.
I have compared settings between the MacBook & iMac, and they are the same. My MacBook uses Tiger and doesn't have the option of default & custom ports. It is set to port 25. I have tried custom ports of 25 & 587 on the new iMac as well as the default port option. None of those seem to work.
Is there something else that could be wrong or anything else I can try? Thanks ahead of time for any assistance.
