MacBook in China

Does anyone know why my MacBook can't boot up while I am working in China?  This happened on both of my trips.  It always gives me a grey screen and a folder icon with a question mark in the center.  When I return to the states, everything is working properly.

The symptom you describe usually means that there is a problem connecting to the HDD which could be the cable or the HDD itself.  Why it would work in the states and not in China either defies logic or it is a case of coincidence.
I would open Disk Utility and and check the SMART Status and run Verify Disk.
Back up your data as a precautionary measure.
Ciao.

  • Traveling with Macbook to China

    Hi,
I am about to head off to China with my beautiful Macbook. Is there anything else I need other than a small travel adapter? I don't want to plug it in out there and watch it blow up.
    Thanks in advance

No. I used my MacBook in China for six months without any problems or adaptors. I bought a power bar in China so I could use my two pronged plug on the power adaptor. We usually found free wireless in coffee shops.

  • Buying a MacBook in China???

    Hi,
I might be going to China to work for a few months.
Does anyone know if the Mountain Lion supplied with MacBooks in China is the "full" Mountain Lion?
I've been told that Chinese authorities have a lot of restrictions in regards to the internet (some social media sites are banned - no harm - and Skype is somehow restricted) and I'm wondering that if I buy a MaxBook in China will Mountain Lion be missing anything?
    And does FaceTime work?
    Cheers

I wouldn't have any problem. Last time I visited China, our hotel had high-speed access with an ethernet port in every room. I didn't bring my iBook though.
For the most part they're not interested in arresting tourists for the websites they visit or inspecting everyone's computer for all the content. Millions of tourists visit every year and take tons of photos. They were never interested in inspecting my camera, although a good deal of gov't employees there were absolutely clueless.
How they treat the locals is a different matter.

i wont be travelling to other countries, so i figured i dont need the apple travel kit thing. also, besides the macbook will be taking some other electronics.

    Both will work just fine.
Just pick one that within your budget and need.

  • Keyboard layout in China?

    Hi!
I'm moving to Shanghai and will be studying there for four years and the first thing I will do before my studies is to go from my two year old white MacBook and buy myself a MacBook Pro. I will be doing a short stop in Hong Kong before I arrive in Shanghai and I know exactly how the keyboard looks on a Mac from Hong Kong, it's a standard English keyboard, but is it the same on the ones from Shanghai or are there any Chinese characters on the keyboard? and is everything you would find on an English one still there?
I am going to study Chinese so the perfect keyboard for me would be an English one with Chinese characters (whatever standard that is being used today) on as well, just like all the number keys on my current MacBook have special characters on them.
Also, does a charger from Hong Kong work in Shanghai power sockets?
Because of the limited Online Apple Store in China, where your only choice is to buy over the phone, the "configure your Mac" function doesn't work and I would like to know, just to be completely safe, if you can configure your MacBook in China with your choice of RAM, Hi-Res screen etc.
    Thanks for any help!

  • TNT shipment tracking woes - familiar?

(Because the other thread is huge)
Ordered my MacBook online on 28th May (Sunday), and was given a delivery date of 7th June. I can track the shipment fine through TNT. Only problem is, it's the 6th of June and the status hasn't changed since June 1st. It's still in China:
Pick up date 31 May 2006
    Destination Edinburgh
    Delivery Date
    Signatory
    Date Time Location Status
01 Jun 2006 20:40 Suzhou Shipped From Originating Depot
31 May 2006 19:20 Suzhou Consignment Received At Transit Point
Two phonecalls to TNT yielded the same answer: the last place it was scanned was the depot in China and it's still on schedule for delivery on the 7th, so it should be fine. Now I'm no expert on the logistics of international shipping, but it strikes me as highly unlikely that TNT will be able to get my MacBook from China to Scotland inside a day and a half when it normally seems to take them a week and a half.
Has anyone else had (or is having) a similar experience?
MacBook 2.0 Ghz (white)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   (Somewhere in a TNT depot in China)

    Well,
first shipping: Ordered May 23rd, shipped May 26th, Receiced May 30th. Tracking was wonderful.
second shipping (a replacement unit): Ordered May 31st, Shipped June 3rd, tracking is: hold back due to technical problems since June 4th.
TNT says it is not in China anymore, but can't tell me when it will be deliverd.
They say it is scheduled for the 9th (but no guarantee).
Apple's web site says meanwhile: June 10th (a Saturday, not sure
if TNT will deliver Apple packages on a saturday). Moreover, by telephone Apple allows delivery till june 13th (tuesday).
So, it is not only TNT which is annoying, it is Apple, too -
when it comes to delivery status information. It seems to
me that my replacement unit will take longer than my original purchase

  • Change iTunes Store Country

    Hello,
I am from Berlin, Germany. If I want to log in to the German iTunes Store, it says that I am not allowed. It seems I am only allowed to use the Chinese iTunes store.
The historical reason is, that I first used my MacBook in China (I lived there as expat) and logged in to iTunes store from a Chinese IP address.
When I browsed this forum, I saw a lot of legal discussions, that you should not use a store from another than your country. But this is not the case for me, as I am a German, and I am in Germany, and I can NOT access the German iTunes store.
How can I change my iTunes store account, that I can use the German iTunes store?
    Thx,
    kinnla

    thx for the reply, Diane!
Recently, I ordered a photo calendar and already changed the credit card, billing- and shipping address of my apple ID to Germany.
I tried the following to access German iTunes Store:
    1. open the German iTunes store
    2. press "sign in"
    3. enter my apple ID and password
    4. Now a popup comes, telling me my billing information was changed outside of iTunes. I can only press one button (chinese already, I guess it is 'OK')
    5. Now I am logged in (can see my username on the top right corner). It is still the Germand store site. On the top there is the status "accessing iTunes"
    6. After about 5s, the site "Edit Payment Information" appears. It says: "There were errors or omissions in the information. Please correct the indicated items." And then printed in red: "Your account information has changed. Please review your billing information and approve it for use in the iTunes Store. If you cancel, you will not be able to buy music until you have approved your billing information." It shows my German address in Berlin correctly, but country is fixed to China. So no way to change it here.
In fact, this is where I hang. I tried the following:
    7. Press the right button of the lower two ones. It is Chinese languge again, I guess it is 'continue'.
    8. Now it is printed in red: "The <chinese word> must be a 6-digit number". This is related to my postal code. Postcodes are 5 digits in Germany, in China they are 6.
    Then I gave up.
Now, after writing these lines, I tried again and found a way:
    1. In the iTunes menu, press Store -> View my Account
    2. Now it shows my account info, still in Chinese, and I am able to change my country.
    3. Change country to Germany.
    4. Language changes to German, I need to confirm the AGB
    5. Now I can access the German store.
So again, thanks for your hints, Diane! It led me to the solution.
    Regards,

  • [HELP!!!]iCloud, Mac appstore not connecting, ever since I  move to china bot in ipad and macbook pro

since I move to china a week ago i realize base on my personal experience that the country is definitely no mac friendly, which is unfortunate for me since i own a macbook pro, iphone and ipad, and i tell you why. ever since i move to china it seems that most of internet related services that apple offer in the mountain lion seemed to be useless, firstly, I can't connect to the mac app store, secondly, i can't connect to the iCloud to do backups for my ipad and iphone and sync notes, and lastly, although not a big lost for me but still noticable is that the help center no longer able to find help if needed from the internet. oh yeah and the safari seems to work slower. I tried to search for any person that are in similar situation like me but no ane seems to be in one therefore I started this discussion. please help me out...
to give you guys a heads up, looking at all the problems the patterns seems to relate with the apple connections only, I use a mid 2009 macbookpro from Australia, and I bought the mountaion lion from an indonesian appstore, currently my feelings leads to the fact that my mountain lions that are not bought from chinese mac appstore is the reasons, since i read from some articles that the mountain lions that were released in china are different witht he rest of the world.
any help or solution in order to make my mac working normal again is very much welcome, cheers guys

The Magsafe autoswitches based on detected power.  You will likely need a wall adapter to alter ther US-based 3-prong to whatever is used in China.

  • MacBook Pro not working, and I'm in China

Hello everyone, I am posting on here because there is no way to email customer support and I am currently lacking the ability to make phone calls. Sorry, but I'm about to get a little personal here (note: I added this little note in later after I realized how ridiculous I sounded) - I am currently 48 hours without sleep; that is my excuse. My 4 year old MacBook Pro seems to have sh*t the bed, and the worst possible time. I have just spent every last penny I had to come out here to China to seek bigger and better opportunities and my side kick is this here dead laptop. I don't treat this thing like crap. She's a little banged up, got a cracked screen, but this all happened within the first year or so of getting her (freshman year of college about sums it up), so I assume this has nothing to do with any of those shenanigans. I don't download things, or do whatever else that would make her act this way. I use the Internet, and save Microsoft Word and Powerpoint (downloaded in 2011) documents. That's about all. Everything is on there in that little box that I need, to be out here. Absolutely everything. Most importantly, all of my resume, cover letter, and school information that I need to get my life started out here. I don't speak the language, I don't know anybody, I can't ship this puppy out of here (e v e r y  l a s t  p e n n y [dont worry, my hotel is paid for for the next month, and it's free all you can eat breakfast]) but I'm not getting anywhere without this laptop. And to top it off, an old email address that may have had at least a partial resume on it is locked by Yahoo, and guess what the only way to unlock it is? that's right, I have to call them.
Please tell me, what are my options? And thank you for taking the time to read my pathetic story.
Attachment that won't attach: I press the power button, and a file folder with a question mark blinks on and off for a minute and then she turns off.

    Hello again, D'Anna.
Thanks for the update in regard to your issue. At this point, it seems like your issue may be hardware related.
In your situation, you might be better served by seeking out an Apple Retail Stores or Apple Authorised Service Provider in your area.

  • I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 from the USA.  After installing Mavericks, Adobe CS6 crashes whenever it is plugged into a 27inch cinema display I purchased from the apple store in China (We moved to China). It works when not plugged into 27inch display.

I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 from the USA. It is now running Mavericks.  I connect it to a 27" Cinema Display that I bought in China after we moved to China.  Before I installed Mavericks, I could run all of the Adobe CS6 and Adobe CS5.5 applications on my Macbook Pro while connected to the cinema display. Now that I have Mavericks installed, whenever I am connected to my 27" CInema display my Adobe applications crash upon opening.  I know this is a rare scenario, but does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? Is there a new driver that needs installed?  I'd appreciate any help.

I am also having a similar issue. I used Adobe Lightroom and my whole display goes black. Even my laptop screen and the lights on the keyboard go black. I can still hear the fan running, so I assume it is just the display. This is my first Mac and I have had nothing but issues. I think I am going back to Windows after this.

  • TS4006 Why can't I see a map when using find my iPhone on my macbook air in China?

I am using icloud on my macbook air to track my iphone. I can get the position of my iphone with a green dot, but there's no map showing. Why is that? I am in Chengdu, a city in China.

There has never been a function to copy anything from an iPhone and paste it to a computer.
All of your media should be in iTunes already.
If it is not and was purchased from iTunes, right click on the device and select Transfer Purchases.
If the media is not in iTunes and was not purchased from iTunes, how did you get it on the device in the first place?

  • Sites blocked in China still blocked on my macbook pro in US

Since I've returned to the US from China, where Facebook and Youtube have been blocked for months, I haven't able to access those sites from my macbook pro here at home. I know there is no problem with the connection in my home, because I've tried accessing those sites on a other macs from my home simultaneously, and only had the connection problem from mine. Is it possible that some block got installed on my computer through the internet in China? How can I resolve this problem? (I've already tried accessing the sites from different servers; Safari, and Firefox which I just installed in the US, with no luck).

I am in Jilin China and went to the local Apple resale store, but all the MacBook Pros with Retina Display have Chinese as the core language, and the store workers couldn't help me get English.  Where can I buy a BacBook Pro in China that has English as the core language?

Not very bright of them.  Every Mac can be switched among 33 languages, including English, in a few seconds via the system preferences.

    And in Chinese
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14211?viewlocale=zh_CN
Along with that, when setting up a brand new Mac (or after install an fresh version of the OS), the first thing you have do is: select a language. That choice sets the language for the rest of the setup and the default. Pick English and you're done.
But as Tom mentioned, that can always be changed.
