MacBook in Greece--Problems all the way

Hi there!
I bought the very anticipated macbook on the 9th of June 2006.After two (two and a half specifically) weeks of regular use(netbeans, dreamweaver), macbook died unexpectedly. No white light,no fan spinning,no sound,no startup image.Nothing at all(motherboard dead?)
The macbook was bought directly from the main reseller here in Greece, Rainbow(www.rainbow.gr).After 20-25 phone conversations and another 10 e-mails, they are refusing to replace the machine or give my money back. Estimated time of service - unknown.
Is this the proper apple support in Greece? I am wondering.
Thank you in advance, for any reply.

After 10 days of my first post, i received the macbook with a brand new logic board.Problem is it does not have a serial number, but never mind.
Now i am pushing it to the limits with @seti, in order to test the new logic board.
Thanks for the replies.

  • MacBook wont boot up all the way!!

I recently updated my computer with Quiktime and itunes applications and it asked me to restart after updates were complete. It restarted but it gets stuck on the gray screen with the apple and the turning wheel and wont go any further. I read similar posts but the problem is i do not have any of my original software with me because i am living in Europe right now. I tried the shift and power and also the command and ctrl and power and nothing has worked. is there any way i can fix this without having to reinstall?

I don't have an answer since you don't have the install DVDs or apparently even a backup drive with you, but this is a good place to point out the need for preventative maintenance to anyone who is interested.
It is always somewhat risky to install new software. It is like surgery; it is usually safe but there can be complications caused by the fact that everyone's computer is setup differently and many people have corrupted files already on their computers that they are not even aware of. Then when the new installed update comes across something that is corrupted, bad things can happen.
I think many people don't use an external hard drive as a backup because they don't want to spend the money. In this case, do what I do, as a redundancy to an ext. backup drive, partition your computer's drive such that you can install a copy of OS X on each partition. Then you will always have a functional OS in case you get caught without your install DVDs or any other method of getting back on track.
The second OS (on a partition) is also great for trouble shooting all manner of issues that might come up from time to time. The only downside is that it will consume some space on your hard drive but then you should not be living so close to the edge anyway if you absolutely need that few extra GB of disk space.
Business and industry could not possibly survive if they did not use redundancies and fail-safes to cover the unexpected. Individuals should not think that they somehow can.

If these do not resolve the issue or if you are not comfortable with proceeding through these steps then take your Mac to an Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.  An Apple store will perform these initial steps, diagnose the problem, and give an estimate for repairs (if needed).  If the Mac is less than one year old or is covered by AppleCare any repairs would be free.

  • Macbook Pro not booting up all the way, weird problems

Last night I was using my Macbook Pro, closed the lid then came back later and when I opened the lid it wouldn't wake back up. Shut it down by holding the power button, then tried booting it back up. You can hear the CD/DVD drive spin up, (got my copy of X-Plane in there) but nothing else happens. Keyboard backlights never turn on, display stays dark, and the sleep light never lights up all the way either, just stays dim. Leave it for a few minutes, then close the lid and the sleep light gets bright like the computer is awake, and you can still here it running.
Sounds like classic SMC issues right? Well tried resetting that several times, no luck. Reset the PRAM while I was at it as well, no luck. Really not sure what's wrong now.
Macbook Pro was purchased spring '08, can't remember all the specs off the top of my head but it was the top-of-the line processor, 2-gig of ram, the nvidia 8600 video card. I've heard that there have been some issues with that card however I'm not yet convinced that this is a video issue. Software update ran just a few days ago, so I'm running whatever the latest version of mac os X is. (10.5.??)

Here's a link to the NVIDIA program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
There is a specific test they run to diagnose this problem. If it pulls the right error code, you get a free logic board replacement. Print out a copy of the article and take it along--oddly enough, there are still a few Apple guys that don't seem to be familiar with this program.
So far I have not experienced the NVIDIA problem myself, but I have read a number of posts about it. Some people have reported multiple problems--some so severe that their Mac won't boot up enough to run the test. However, since your Mac sounds unusable the way it is, you may as well make an appointment at the genius bar and see if you qualify for a replacement logic board. That could cure many things.
    Good luck!

  • Mini Dvi to hdmi problem, the mini dvi doesn't even plug in all the way?

    hi,
i have a mid 2007 macbook, i just bought a mini dvi to hdmi cable, i tried to plug it in and it doesn't even plug on all the way, 1/3 of the conector is still hanging out, and it doesnt display anything anyways, nothing is detected on the macbook or the TV.
somone seem to have the same exact problem as me with the laptop, but his query wasn't answered it was the last post on this thread.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3660057?start=0&tstart=0

Thanks for that. I have a Y adapter (3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound just like you said). Under input options on my TV, I can select either HDMI1 input (which gives me video only) or AV1/S input (which gives me audio only) - not both at once...Could you explain how I can get stereo audio on my TV?

  • MacBook Won't Boot Up All The Way

Hi, I have had my macbook for quite a while, and it has had problems before like a non working battery and random brightness changes but ever since I installed the latest security update it will not boot up all the way, first it takes a long time for it to pass the white screen with the Apple logo and loading circle, after that it reaches a blue screen, with no response. Once it made it to my desktop background but none of the icons or dock showed up. Any help?

I have the same problem mentioned in the original message. I downloaded the updates and my computer will no longer boot up. I put in Disk one of the install disc, but that did nothing and now I can't get the disk to eject. I was going to try disk 2, but can't get disk 1 out.

  • My MacBook Air will not boot up all the way.

My MacBook Air will not boot up all the way, it only allows me to sign in and then it stays on a white screen. I tried restarting, rebooting, recovery and smc reset. Nothing works, it stays with the same problem. How can I fix this?

  • Having a problem with mini dvi to hdmi.  Can see the background, but must move all screens all the way to the right to see on tv.  Any solutions?

I'm having an issue with setting up mini dvi to hdmi.  I can connect and see the background picture from my macbook (approx 4 years old) but in order to see any screens or video, I have to move the screen almost all the way off the macbook display to the right.  Any ideas why this would happen?  Also, there is no audio, although when I bought the adapter and cable at the Mac store, they assured me it would handle both.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Displays on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will makethe second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in ClamshellMode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
No Mini-DVI adapter can carry audio. The only MacBook that sends audio is the Mid 2010 model 7,1 through a Mini DisplayPort.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

Why can't I update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1? Every time I try it gets all the way done downloading it; however when it's processing the file the page tells me "There is a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. Network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active. or try again later." and next to the file it has err = -3259. I have tried this 17 times and it won't work. My iTunes is completely up to date. I have made sure that my connection is fine and I have tried turning my firewall off with no avail. This has happened to me before but usually the update will go through after 2-3 tries, never to this extent. I don't know what to do. Help!

Error -3259 is a network timeout error, usually. This article might help:

  • My iPhone 5 dies at 20-24% it doesn't go all the way to 0%. Will apple replace my phone or fix my phone for free since its hardware problem and I have no money. This is my second iphone 5 replacement.

My iPhone 5 dies at 20-24% it doesn't go all the way to 0%. Will apple replace my phone or fix my phone for free since its hardware problem and I have no money. This is my second iphone 5 replacement. I have no apple care so I'm worried. My phone has NEVER touched water! I only get 1/5 of battery use. I've also spent 30$ at the apple store on screen protectors for nothing! I really don't have 220$ nor 50$ I am on a strict budget. I believe I have to pay 220 not 50 ford a phone replacement for accidental damage. I don't know what category this falls under. I really need a new phone or battery. HELP! Will I have to pay? Also my screen lighting is all topsy-tervy every I put my screen on highest it won't work I have to wait about a minute? Forgot to mention that my apps exit out by themselves all the time when Im using them.

So, have you tried a reset?  Restore from backup? Restore as new?  You seem to have a few problems but do not mention any action taken to resolve them.  What have screen protectors to do with anything?

  • My iPod is working but the charger won't go all the way in the charger slot to recharge it,someone please tell me want the problem can be. How can I fix this. Thank you

MMy iPod is workin, but my charger no longer fixes all the way in the  slot to recharge it. Want should I do. Thank you

Hey Lynette1234, As UbuntuXP stated check and clean the port of foreign debris. Lint packed in the bottom of the charging port is most often the problem, This seems to be more of an issue with the lighting ports used on the iPod 5. The following will help you clear / clean the lighting port on an iPod 5. Try using a strong light and a magnifying glass to look into the port, using a soft brush to carefully remove any debris, if you must a non-conductive probe may be needed, I find a round wooden toothpick work well. Avoid touching or bending the gold contact pins on the long side of the port. Damage them and you will have a costly repair. Also, make sure the silver lock springs (looks like silver bump on each end) on the short sides of the port are free to move, if not clear the debris. If the older 30 pin type, same thing avoid touching, bending the contacts, and remove all foreign debris. Many report a soft toothbrush works well or a toothpick. Avoid using solvents if the contact pins appear corroded, generally plugging / plugging the charger end , about 12 times will clean dirty contacts. If you must, a cotton swab cut to fit the port with a drop of 91% isopropyl alcohol on it, (you want the swab damp, NOT wet or dripping), will remove most any corrosion. simply run the swab in and out as if you were plugging it in until the swab comes out clean. May need to use more than one swab. But check for lint / foreign debris first. Good luck. Cheers.

  • Macbook won't turn on all the way.  Please help.

Macbook won't turn on all the way.  At first it only showed the grey apple logo, but now it says that I need to restart the computer by holding down the power button for several seconds or pressing the restart button.  I tried this already but it's not doing anything.  Please help.

    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life. Congrats! Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads
Just select the appropriate carrier and network type, select your Blackberry model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.

  • My 2012 MacBook Pro fell and it now makes a clicking noise and shows a grey screen on startup. I'm afraid the hard drive is damaged. Is their anyway to still back up my hard drive even if it doesn't turn on all the way?

So my late 2012 MacBook Pro was sitting on my desk when the desk collapsed. The computer fell with it and I was quite scared at the moment, but thankfully I opened it up and it worked perfectly fine again.
I was later watching a YouTube video and pressed the back button. The screen then froze, and I could not force quit safari. Then this weird clicking noise started to happen. It was coming from the right of the trackpad. That's when I decided to force shutdown the computer with the power button.
I let it sit and then decided to turn it back on. The clicking noise then came back and there was just a blank screen on the boot up. Eventually a grey folder with a question mark started flashing on the screen. That was all it did so I decided to turn it off again.
I'm going to take it into the Apple store ASAP, but I'm curious if my hard drive is damaged and if I will need a new one, which would erase everything on my Mac. So I was wondering if there is anyway to back up the hard driver even if it doesn't boot up all the way, or turn on the computer all the way.
P.S. I have never backed up my hard drive so I wouldn't know what to do.

You may have damaged the HDD which is located in that spot. I would take it in for service.

  • Having a MBPr late 2013 and having a sound problem the sound does not come tom the headphones even its all the way up and when i remove the headphones it docent come out the internal speaker either ? any idea how i fix this?

the sound do not come out the headphones sometimes altho its all the way up in the setting and when i remove the headphones the sound doesnt come from the internal speaker either and only a reboot fixes the problem and thats annoying! any idea how tto fix this?

Hello. I've been able to play sound without problems through headphones or external speakers to date - the output always switched to these automatically until today. Now, sound output continues through internal speakers even if I plug in headphones or external speakers.
    - I tested the headphones and speakers on other devices: they work fine.
    - When I plug in headphones or speakers into the audio output port (I have verified that I'm not using the input jack) the devices are not detected and are not listed under the output tab in system preferences-sound.
I concluded from this that I probably had a problem with the audio port, so to test that I tried the following. I plugged a powered multi-USB device with ports for microphone line-in and headphone line-out into the USB port and switched it on. I verified that it was working by plugging a USB stick into the multi-USB device - this was recognised successfully, so the device was clearly working. I then plugged in headphones and speakers into the audio line-out on the multi USB device - but still no sound came through them (and tey were not listed among output devices) and the Mac continued using internal speakers.
What should I do? Does the latter test suggest that the problem does not lie with the audio port, or is my test not conclusive? What would you advise?
    Many thanks indeed!
    NG
