Macbook Internet Network Hacking (Help Please!)

Hi, Thanks for looking...  I am concerned that my apartment neighbor (a computer network engineer) might be trying to hack my Macbook and snoop around with my internet usage, and possibly access my Macbook remotely. Could someone please answer a few questions to ease my concerns please? (The Macbook is connected directly to the broadband modem and there is no wireless internet involved.)
// I suspect he might have gotten physical access to my broadband modem and seen it, is there any information on the modem itself that would give him access to my macbook and internet usage? (The modem says: cable RF MAC Address... and a serial number)
// How easy is it to hack a specific Macbook? Say if my neighbor was indeed a hacker, and wanted to mess with me for whatever reason, would it actually be possible to find out my internet IP address (could he hack the ISP?) to snoop around with how I use the internet? (The Macbook now has the firewall enabled and file sharing, etc. switched off.)
I know very little about this computer networking stuff, so I'm thinking the worst scenario is happening (which is hopefully far-fetched and exaggerated.) If anyone could help me by sharing their knowledge that would be an awesome help! Thanks!

Depending on the router, it may be very easy for him to hack it, whether he has seen it or not. If you believe this may have happened, see How to manage a hacked wireless router.
As for hacking the Mac, that's not a significant concern unless he has had unmonitored physical access to the machine. If he has, the only way to be sure he hasn't installed something to monitor you is to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch.
If he is able to get on the same network as you - which you should make sure to prevent by securing your wireless router - be sure everything in System Preferences -> Sharing is turned off. If you must have a service there turned on, be sure it can only be accessed using a strong password.

    Steve --
You have made an extra folder called "Internets" and put the Safari app in there.  It (and all other apps) need to be freestanding (not enclosed in another folder) in the HD > Applications folder.
Because it's in this folder, it has not properly updated.  Running 10.8.2 OS, you should be up to 6.0 Safari.  But because it's in a folder, it's still way back there.

I am getting white screen of death on my Macbook Pro, can someone help please?

Intermittent or inconsistent situations as you describe are the most difficult to resolve.  First step you should do is be certain that you have your data backed up.  I suggest that you do this by creating a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner.  The advantage to this is that not only is it a backup but can immediately be used to run your MBP in the event of an internal HHD failure.
The article that I gave you to start your search contains a link to this article:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
Though lengthy, it can resolve most issues if you go through all of the sections.  If you cannot achieve success, then an Apple store genius bar is the last option.
    Ciao.

There's a new driver bundle for OSX 10.6 that you might need to install, the HP link seems to be failing at the moment but there's a version of it here: HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.3_Ph4.dmg
There's a piece on the HP Forum about it here (some folks have problems installing ...)

  • Internet on my MacBook is so slow - Help Please!!

Basically I have a MacBook, about a year and a half old, runs on Tiger, all the latest updates on software etc etc. However my internet connection when on my Mac is very very slow (took over an hour to download an album from iTunes the other day). This can be intermittent and sometimes it speeds up every so often but only for an hour or so. The guy who set up our internet (long story but we are out of range of normal broadband so we receive a radio signal at top of our hill then is relayed to the house) tested the speed and it's in top 3% in country and 5% in the world. Also my Dad's iMac and my Mum's Macbook work on the same network and run much faster than mine so I don't believe there to be any problem with the actual internet connection itself.
I use Firefox but have also tested Safari, and they both run very slowly. I downloaded OnyX in hope that this might help me, ran all the clean ups etc and freed up about 30GB of space on my hard drive. However, this doesn't seem to have helped either.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me any advice on what to do or any particular programs which would help out my situation.
    Thanks very much,
    Nick

Also if this helps, as mentioned in my previous message, I experience periods when the internet speed picks up again to it's original pace. However, what is interesting is that this consistently happens every night between 11 and sometime before 7am. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • MacBook pro can't find any wifi networks. HELP PLEASE

Ok so my late 2011 MacBook pro15" starTed dropping out of my network every now and then. Rebooting it got it hooked back up again. Now just a few weeks ago its not picking up any real wifi networks (according to my phone and what my computer showed me before there's a bunch in range). It shows this network called setup as the only wifi network in range and when I click on it, there is this little grey picture of a computer where the wifi bars should be.
Xbox,  phone and all of the roommates devices are hooked up just fine.
I've taken it out to a couple of coffee shops and its the same thing.  Either seeing no networks or that setup thing.
I've tried restarting,  verify and repair disk, deleting all of my preferred networks.  I don't know what else to do.

Also I've tried to use one of those usb WiFi adapters that essentially bypasses the computers airport card.  That shows all the networks in range but will fail to connect to any of them.

  • WT110, Have internet but no network! Help please!

So I upgraded from a standard Linksys 4 port router to a Linksys WT110 for the wireless abilities.
At present I have all windows firewalls off, DHCP Server is enabled, ddns is disabled, MAC Address Clone is disabled, every computer is on the same workgroup but I can't ping or access any of the computers on my network.
Only one is actually wired. Where I used to be able to see my xbox and my 2 desktop computers, now I can't.
Is there a setting on the new WT110 that I'm just missing that will allow sharing/viewing of the computers on the network?
Basically this is what I have setup...
192.168.1.100 - Main Computer (XP Media Center)
    192.168.1.101 - Xbox
    192.168.1.102 - Laptop #1 (XP Home)
    192.168.1.103 - Laptop #2 (Vista Home)
192.168.1.104 - Backup Computer (XP Home)
Again, the 2 desktop computers and xbox worked fine on the previous router, but since I installed the new wireless one for the various laptops I've lost all networking abilities. Internet is fine on everything. Just nothing else.
Do I need to take my WT110 back? What am I missing? It feels like it's just a basic setting or something I forgot to reset.
Any direction or tips would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

There is no setting on your router to block any kind of traffic between the computer.  If the computers are not able to ping this is a firewall issue even windows firewall can be a problem.

  • TS1398 My MacBook connects happily to a wifi system but my iPad doesn't altho it identifies the network. Help please

Cannot connect to an existing (and workin) wifi system. My MacBook connects no problem!

You have the latest iOS 5.1.1 on your iPad?
Reset your modem/router (turn off power for some minutes)
On your iPad go to Settings, General > Reset > Reset all settings.
Then Keep pressed the Powerbutton and the Homebutton at the same time until you see the Apple logo in your screen.
Then turn power on on modem/router.
Sometimes it can be the security on your router, be sure it is WPA2-AES.

  • Problem with macbook connecting to wireless: help please

    thanks for reading this thread.
i have a linksys WRT54G2 router connected straight from the ethernet port of a cable internet connection. it's been working fine for the past month or two for both me (using macbook 10.5.6), my flatmate (running vista pc) and my girlfriend also running a macbook.
but, the last few days i've been having problems getting connected. which are:
not connecting to wireless network automatically, and asking for password which is already remembered in keychain
getting connection timeout when trying to connect
getting invalid password, even though password is correct
websites taking around 2 mins to load when connection is eventually made
the internet is working fine on both my flatmates and girlfriends computers, but jut doesn't seem to like mine. heres what i've done already:
restored router to factory settings and updated with latest firmware
cleared all known wireless networks within network preferences
    tried both firefox and safari
accessed router using IP address and loaded pages instantly
works fine connected to router with an ethernet cable
the only thing i havn't tried is a different wireless network, which i'm going to try tomorrow when i go into university.
has anyone any idea what the problem may be? like i said, its been working fine for the past 2 months but has just decided it doesn't like my macbook.
any help or suggestions would be great, thanks alot

I had the same problem as you. It all started when all of a sudden my macbook wouldnt automatically join my home wifi that is usually does. I ignored this issue because it still worked, and this persisted for a few months. After a while, the situation got worse and after waking up from sleep, my wifi signal would go strong at first, then weaken until it kicks me off, and i no longer could reconnect as I would get a connection timeout error. I just went to the apple store and they replaced the airport card for free for me.
So basically your airport card is slowly dieing, replacement is inevitable.

  • Express to extend network - setup help please

I would really appreciate some help ensuring i have the correct set up for my express (x2)
I have a mac, macbook, sky broadband modem and a basestation
I connect to the internet using the modem and network "sky 13222".
The basestation has a network id as well "af506f", but i dont use this to connect to the network.
The idea for the 2 expresses was to expand my range into a weak reception of the house for one; and to connect my new pannny bluray player with the other.
I have plugged the first one in and it has showed up on the airport utility f9567b, but when i go to configure it suggests switching networks, which i am unsure about the next steps...the guide doesn't help really..
Anyone with a recommended setup for this?
I am not sure the setup was right before the expresses but i could connect wirelessly to the macbook and my wii ok...
    many thanks in advance

Hi, to set up the airport the computer has to connect to it hence "switching networks"
Once you added your new Airport to the your existing network then you should be able to switch back and it may all work!

  • 55UL605U Network setup help please

Ok so we've had this tv for weeks now and no matter what I try, I cannot get it to connect to my home network.  Could someone please help a newbie to get this connected?  PLEASE

    Hello,
01: If Macs, this may be important...
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
02: The beauty of the guest network - and the whole point of it - is that you get two separate wireless networks for the price of one AirPort base station. The traffic is segmented and isolated, so users connected to the guest network can't see or detect the traffic on the primary network, and vice versa.

    Hi,
I am in need of an external home network drive in either 1 or 2TB form.
It will be for an imac and macbook pro + ps3 to use.
I saw this Western Digital one but was not sure how good it is -

    aye, indeed.
that's why i suggested the OP searches the forum for information on both drives
personally, i swear by LaCie drives. i like drives sold by [OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire> too. alas, they seem to have no NAS on offer ...

  • No Internet.  Need help please!

Ok here's the story.  I have an iPhone 3G with Net10.  Everything worked fine until the 17th of this month then I couldn't connect to the internet anymore without wifi.  I have contacted Net10 with this problem, was on the phone with them for an hour and half.  After trying to install a new profile, that wouldn't install, and even erasing everything and rebooting, I still cannot connect to the internet.  They told me that they have done everything they can and I now needed to contact Apple.  That everything on their end was good and said I should be able to connect.  Can anyone please help me?  I would greatly appreciate it.

Depending on what version of iOS you have, that is an older AT&T carrier file. The current file is 15.5. That may be the one that Net 10 generally uses though. If you do not have access to the APN settings, then you need to contact Net 10 to find out if they have a carrier file that you can use and load on your phone to provide their current settings. This is more than likely your problem, your APN settings will no longer allow you to access Net 10's network. They are going to have to work this out, it really isn't an Apple problem. The carrier files can provide or deny access to setting areas and the APN area is one the most frequent denials. That makes it so people cannot try and make configuration changes and mess up their access.

  • Can't log into my XP machine from MacBook Pro using GoToMyPC - Help Please?

I just got a new MacBook Pro 17" and am having trouble logging into the the computer at my office (Dell Machine XP Pro). I've used the service for quite some time now so it's not that I am new to the web based service.
    Here's what happens:
I sign into my account at the GoToMyPC.com website with my username & password without problem. The website shows that my Dell machine is "on line" as normal. When I click onthe Connect button, the the Safari window resizes (universal viewer?) and looks like it starts to load. However, within a few seconds, I get the spinning beachball of death. I've tried to let it sit there for as long as 10 minutes with no change. I have to force quick Safari because it's "not responding"
Here's what I think I know and the steps I've taken thus far...
I know that the service is working because I am able to log in from my wife's laptop ( HP - Windows XP home) from the same home wireless network that MacBook is connected to. That also rules out (I think??!!) any issues with the wireless network in my home.
I don't believe that there is any inherrent problem using a Mac to log in using the GoToMyPC service since I tried it on several different computers in the Apple Store without any issues whatsoever.
I talked with GoToMyPC tech support and they they it seems like a Java problem. However, it seems that I have the latest Java plug-ins in my Applications/Utilities/Java folder (1.3.1 & 1.4.2). Other than that suggestion they weren't much help.
I called AppleCare and they had me set up a test user account with no other changes to settings, etc... No help. They then had me re-install the OS from the original discs. No Help and know I have a folder called "previous systems" on my HD taking up 10 Gig. Can I just delete this folder or have I now opened up another can or worms?
I've poked around the security settings in the system prefs panel - but nothing juped out at me as a pssible soltion so I didn't change anything.
I'm at my wits end - I need this to work and can't figure out why it isn't.
    Anybody got any ideas???
MacBook Pro 17" - 2 Gig Ram - 120 Gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   OS 10.4.7 on the "previous system"

Glad to hear that you found it.
Unfortunately, when we try to help folks...we usually stumble around for ideas, especially when we don't have the "whole picture". Your router/modem security setup was the wild card.
In your case, it was particularly odd that wife's PC could get out to Citrix through the router's firewall, but Mac couldn't.
But I'd be willing to bet that there's a FAQ section at GoToMyPC, that will explain this for you. But when you're up to your ears in alligators...well you know the rest
(Do you have a firewall running on both the Motorola and on the wireless router? Or don't you have a router, as such, and the network is provided using just the Motorola? Something to think about. Two firewalls are not necessarily better than one).
no reply needed...just glad you're "in".
