Macbook is faster than my Macbook Pro?

I did a quick test running the Universal Binary of Firefox and surfing a few sites.
Why is my Macbook faster than my MBP? Both have the same 2 GHz core clock.

It could be the power management system. I don't know the numbers but if you download CoreDuoTemp. you will see when you are just woing a little web surfing the mhz are not always at 2.0ghz. Do a test see what the mhz are doing the same task on both.

  • Why is my MacBook downloading faster than my new Imac?

I have a two year old Macbook; 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM with about 30GB left of memory. I also just purchased, from apple, a 27" Imac; 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. and have just under 850GB left. The Macbook is running on 10.5.8 and the Imac is on 10.6.3.
My issue is that when i download/stream video to my Imac it takes a substantial amount of time. I love to watch movies, tv shows, ect, on my Imac. I was disappointed by how slow the downloads would take. So I set up my macbook right in front of the Imac to compare the speeds. I went to the Movie Trailers section on apple.com and I clicked on The Last Airbender 1080p (149MB) at the same time for both computers (on WiFi of the same network). My macbook finished the download 5 minutes faster than the Imac. I then tried the 42MB version with a minute difference with the Macbook. I then went to youtube and it was almost the same speed. I tried Itunes and it was about the same speed as well. I then did an internet speed test with both and got these results:
    Macbook: Download 18.45Mb/s, Upload 2.28Mb/s, Ping 93
    IMac: Download 20.88Mb/s, Upload 2.3Mb/s, Ping 89
I don't know if any of this information helps or if anyone will even read this far but the apple store is extremely far from my house and would try almost anything to fix this issue. My questions are:
    1) Is this a known issue that has a fix, if so how do i fix it?
    2) Is this possibly a faulty computer that i would have to return?
    3) Is this the way it's supposed to operate and if I don't like it take it back
Thanks in advance for anyone who even reads this post.

You may also want to check your router. Some routers use a priority bandwidth feature that will dedicate more bandwidth to one machine. If for some reason the macbook's download was started earlier than the imac's, then this might be part of the discrepancy. There are a lot of factors to think about when it comes to wifi bandwidth.
I do agree with the one comment about testing one computer at a time instead of simultaneously.
Also, when you said you have the movies from the Macbook on your iMac, can you elaborate? If you are using a shared library, then your iMac is going to be using part of your download speed for updates to your shared itunes library, where your Macbook is only going to be uploading the list. If I am incorrect in my understanding of the sharing of iTunes library, someone please let me know.

  • Faster than 2010 Mac Pro?

    HI,
I am wondering if anyone can tell me if the new Mac Mini is actually faster than my current Mac Pro Tower?
    It's a Mac Pro "Twelve Core" 2.66 (2010/Westmere)
    Thanks

    based on these:
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/creativesuite/production/cs6/ pdfs/adobe-hardware-performance-whitepaper.pdf

You Mac Pro is faster and can likely be improved like adding an SSD boot drive

and maybe upgrading the graphics card

  • No faster than a MacBook Pro 17?

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 macbook pro 17" with a 2.3 i7 (4-core). I was looking into upgrading to the new Macbook pro 2013 but I see in the specs that they are still shipping with 4-core i7 processors. For the purposes of this question I am only concerned with processor speed. Is it possible that there has been no processor speed advances since early 2011?
    Thanks a lot in advance

IMHO the newest Mac notebooks with the Retina screens are just a Gimic. Apple is so intent on making notebooks as small as possible that they are missing the Big Picture. Sure a lot of people want a light thin notebook but most also want to be able to upgrade them in some way in the future.
If one pound +/- makes all that much difference to you in the transportation of a notebook maybe you should get off your duff and start working out.

  • Does the 15" 2014 GT 750M model drain battery faster than the iris pro version?

I can't decide between the 750M model or the iris pro model. I've heard the GT 750M is not worth the additional price
as it drains the battery much quicker, is this true?

The 15-inch MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M also comes with an Intel GPU, which is the same GPU as the model without the NVIDIA GPU.
This means that the battery life will be the same in both models with tasks that do not require higher GPU performance (home tasks). The NVIDIA GPU is enabled when you need more performance, so you do not need to worry about that. However, as the NVIDIA GPU is more powerful, it needs more power, reducing the battery life when it is being used

  • New iMac faster than my MacPro?

I've recently purchased a new 24" iMac for a 2nd home I have out west. After a few days tinkering with it I'm pretty positive that this new machine is quicker than my 2 year old MacPro that I have at home. I was hoping after looking at the specs below if people could confirm that this should be the case.
The reason I'm wondering is that I even though the iMac is brand new, the Mac Pro was and still is far more expensive than the iMac. The main reason I would like to know for sure is that since I work from home and have fairly advanced needs (two VMWare Fusion vms running on top of OSX 60+ hours a week working with important financial software), if the iMac is indeed faster I may be looking for an upgrade. Before I essentially toss my $2700 MacPro to the side though I want to make sure the lag that I notice that I don't yet see on the iMac couldn't be simply cured with an OS reinstall, which hasn't been done in over 2 years.
I'm also a little unsure of how to compare the Xeon vs the current Pentium processors, as well as how important the 1067mhz vs the 667mhz ram is to my needs. I basically run two Fusion VMs with 1gb dedicated to each one in Unity, Safari, iTunes, Mail, Adium, and Skype occasionally.
    Specs for each machine..
    24" iMac - 2.93ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram 1067mhz, 600gb ATA HD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
    MacPro w 30" Cinema - 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 5GB Ram 667mhz, 250GB ATA HD, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    All advice greatly appreciated.

I'm also a little unsure of how to compare the Xeon vs the current Pentium processors
No Intel Mac has ever had a "Pentium" inside.
The Mac Pro would be faster for applications that are designed to use multiple processors. It has 4 cores versus 2 in the iMac.
VMware Fusion has a option (in the virtual machine's settings) to use more than one +virtual processor+, but it is not as efficient booting the OS directly. Also, it probable that things like the financial software you are running on the virtual machine is itself not designed to take advantage of multiple cores. Therefore, CPU clock speed becomes the overriding factor for performance in your case. Since the new iMac runs at 2.93 GHz versus 2.66 GHz for the Mac Pro, it is certainly possible that your iMac is faster than the Mac Pro, in your situation. If you were running Final Cut Studio or Logic Studio (or other app that takes advantage of all the cores), the Mac Pro would be faster.
Also, Snow Leopard has a new technology called Grand Central Dispatch
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/#grandcentral
which is supposed to make use of multiple cores more efficient under Mac OS X. I don't think it will have too much impact on existing third-party software, but it will be interesting to see what the developers at VMware and other third-parties software firms can do with it. So your Mac Pro with four cores may become more efficient (faster) under Snow Leopard.

  • Something faster than the Elgato Turbo?

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro 2.66 and from what I've read on line, there's no point in getting the Elgato Turbo Encoder. Is there something I can get which will encode faster than the Mac Pro 2.66?
    Thanks

8 core mac pro. i'm going to end of year. probably save 25% more time.

  • Why is my 2008 Macbook faster than my 2012 MacBook Pro?

I got a basic, 13Inch Macbook back in 2008. It has been used, nonstop, for the past almost 5 yrs since i bought it. I never turn it off, it always gets used on a bed/couch, tonnes of windows/programs constantly open. Its full of crappy DLed programs, movies, music and whatnot, has only recently been updated to 10.6 OS X. Its dying, the charger barely works, and it over heats and blacksout sometimes and yet, it runs so much faster than my end of 2012 13in MacBook Pro, 2.9GHz model. Slower to the point that i still use my old one and let Hubby take the new one to the Construction site with him. Ive used it maybe once or twice since i bought it in November. Booting up is slower, general use is slow, opening programs is slower. And its got almost nothing on it!
Just wondering why its slower when its newer and supposedly better? I thought i was upgrading?

Wipe the drive on the new system and Reinstall OS X. Factory installs aren't all they are supposed to be. Sometimes corrupted from the Get Go.
Only by wiping the drive and doing a Fresh Clean Install will you know if your slowness was caused by some type of OS corruption or posibly a hardware problem.
Also you don't mention what RPM the drive is in your older Mac but Apple puts really Slow 5400RMP drives in the newer models by default. These Slow 5400RPM drives will slow down the whole system. Slow to boot. Slow to load programs and files into those programs and slow to save back to the drive. Also OS X is constantly writing to and reading from the hard drive so a slower drive will again slow down the whole system.
If it is less then 14 days old you can return it No Questions Asked for a full refund and then maybe try another, different, machine.

  • Seems like non retina macbook pro is more expensive than retina macbook pro!

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.6 GHz is $2,299.00 with the Antiglare Widescreen Display now. If I wanna upgrade it with Crucial 16GB kit ($80) and 256GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD with Data Transfer Kit ($220) it's gonna coast $2,599.00 all together.  On the other hand, with the base Retina version with the upgrades (2.6 GHz, 16GB) from Apple It only coasts 2,499.00.  I even save $100 for my external DVD burner if I want to get one. Most people say on this forum non retina is cheaper than retina MAcbook pro but I couldn't figure it out how please tell me if I am missing anything!
I have been looking for most discussions in this forum about retina and non retina Macbook pro.  Most people think that upgrading is the biggest issue with the Retina Macbook pro but can we upgrade the non retina version more than 16GB?  if we can't it's not an issue.  With the SDD I guess we can go with the external ones if we really need one and I assume that external SSD's are going to get cheaper in the time too or we can get external USB3 / Thunderbolt hard drives.  I just decided to purchase one of these Macbook pro and started looking for more information online to figure out which one is better but I got more confused because the numbers say the Retina is cheaper and upgrading is not that big of a deal but most people who know about Apple products more than me on this forum say non Retina is cheaper and it can be upgraded after purchasing it.
I might be wrong with my thoughts but I need some info about upgrading. What rigs can I upgrade with the non retina Macbook pro?
(Only RAM and Hard drive or more than that?)  I would like to know your thoughts and advises too?
    Thanks for your help!
I am thinking of getting one of these for video editing (Final cut pro X)!

Yep, the only things that you can upgrade on the non-Retina models is the RAM and the HD/SSD. I'm assuming that your calculations are correct, so you've just got to decide if you want to the Retina display model or not. For me, there have been too many issues with the Retina models to buy one just now - but I'm sure that there are a lot of happy Retina owners out there - we only hear from those having problems.

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

  • Should I sell my MacBook Air to get a MacBook Pro?

Currently I have a MacBook Air Mid 2011 with the following specs:
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Hard Drive: 250GB
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
I originally put up an add to sell it for 950$ since it's from 2011. I wasn't sure if this was a good price or not but that's besides the point. I got an offer and I have the option to sell it now. The reason I would be selling it is because I would upgrade to a new 2013 MacBook Pro. I'm currently a student going into 1st year of University. Since I'm a student I can get the new MacBook Pro for only $999.00 so I wouldn't have to spend too much money upgrading which is good. The only thing I wasn't sure of is if this is even an upgrade I should consider.
Here are the specs of the 2013 MacBook Pro:
    Processor: 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1600MHz memory
    Hard Drive: 500GB
    Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000
I don't know much about specs so I don't really know if a 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 is better than a 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5 or not. The program I'm going into doesn't involve a super high powered computer, but I do have one elective which is Computer Science which might require a high powered computer.
Anyways, I just wanted to upgrade because sometimes when I'm watching Netflix or YouTube videos that my MacBook Air tends to struggle sometimes. It gets very hot at the top left of the keyboard. It's not like the laptop lags or anything but it can get VERY hot. I try to keep the fan uncovered but I feel like there might be a big dust build up or something because it never did this when I first got it.
I'm also wondering if it'll be more convenient having a MacBook Air. I can get the brand new MacBook Air for $1049 which is only 50$ more than the Pro, but I imagine the pro is more for my money and my MacBook Air might even be faster than the newest MacBook Air.
Anyways any tips would be nice because I have a week to make my decision so thanks to anyone who is willing to help me out!

  • Is the MacBook Air fast at video editing?

I don't know whether to get a MacBook Pro or Air. I would prefer the air, because of the portability and flash storage. Just curious about whether it edits video smoothly?

A major factor or two will be the amount of ram you get (not upgradable in the Air) and the amount of storage.  The Pro can come with a faster cpu and a second discrete gpu depending on the model, and can be upgraded in memory if you see you need more.  But the Air's SSD storage is going to be faster than the hard drive in the Pro so you will see a quicker response for some tasks.  Of course, you can also order a Pro with SSD if that is important to you.
Either properly setup and equipped will work...but with the Air, make sure you get what you will need at the start, upgrades post-purchase are very limited.

  • Macbook Air 13" 2011 vs Macbook Pro 13" for a uni student?

    Hi all,
I am a university student studying Humanities and Psychology, so I write a LOT of essays. My other computer activities include watching movies, surfing the web, the occasional MMO (WoW and/or EVE Online) and listening to music.
I have a 1Tb external HDD connected to my wireless so hard drive space isn't an issue.
I am torn between the new MacBook Air 13" 256Gb, 4Gb RAM, and the 13" MacBook Pro 500Gb, 8Gb RAM.
The cost of either isn't an issue.
Let me know what your experiences are with either, and leave your opinion on which would be the best for me.
    Thanks.

First off EatsRainbows, DO NOT get a new computer without a solidstate drive (SSD) it is the most important component of your computer (prorams open faster, saving is faster, transfering files is faster, everything happens fast). IMO the better screen, slightly better keyboard of the Air will be better for you. Also it wins in my hardcore comparision:
    2011 13” MacBookAir vs. 2011 13” MacBook Pro
Both are the base models, the Pro has the optional128GB SSD to match the Air.
    Cost:
    MacBook Air - $1299
    Macbook Pro - $1449
    Winner = MacBook Air
    Screen:
    MacBook Air –  13.3” 16:10 1440x900
    Macbook Pro - 13.3” 16:10 1280x800
    Winner = MacBook Air
    CPU Performance:
    MacBook Air – i5-2557M
    Macbook Pro – i5-2410M, Single Thread 5.5% faster,Multithread 13.5% faster
    Winner = MacBook Pro
    GPUPerformance:
MacBook Air – 384MB Intel HD 3000 (IntegratedGraphics)
Macbook Pro - 384MB Intel HD 3000 (IntegratedGraphics)
    Winner = Tie
    Size:
    MacBook Air – 0.68 in thick max, 45.2 in^2
Macbook Pro – 0.95 in thick max, 108.5in^2
    Winner = MacBook Air
    Weight:
    MacBook Air – 2.96 lbs
    Macbook Pro – 4.5 lbs
    Winner = MacBook Air
    BatteryLife:
    MacBook Air – 50WHr, 7 hours
    Macbook Pro – 63.5WHr, 7 hours
    Winner = Tie
    Winner:
    13.3”MacBook Air by A LOT
So you give up slight loss in single thread speed, for something that is much heavier, much larger, and has a worse screen. Basically you would be mad to pay more for aMacBook Pro.

  • SETI at home--FAST on Intel MacBook

Folks, I've been running SETI@Home for years on my Macs and PCs. For the past couple of weeks, I have using the Universal version (BoincManager 5.49) on my MacBook, in the background.
This thing is fast. BoincManager treats the Intel Core Duo CPU setup as two separate computers. Each one of these is amazingly faster than either my Dell P4 Tower or my G4 Tower.
And, oh yes, when SETI kicks in, and both of those CPUs are cranked up, things heat up in a hurry. But the computer doesn't bog down, slow down.
If you are into the SETI project, and other similiar projects, this UNIVERSAL build is simply amazing.

I don't worry about the heat. I just use the computer. The CPU is going to throttle back if programming cycles / interrupts cause thermal events. There are plenty of sensors to determine this.
However, the BOINC settings do allow you to throttle back the CPU use.
Also, settings allow you to have the project stop as soon as you touch a keyboard or mouse / pad. After a timed duration, it will resume.
