MacBook is freezing for no apparent reason

Last night and this afternoon my MacBook froze for no reason that I could see. Everything comes up on the screen, but one time the mouse wasn't visible at all when I touched the trackpad, and the other time the mouse was the only thing that would respond. I had to force it to shut down both times, and both times when I started it back up I saw the file folder icon with a question mark on it, then it would boot up as normal. Nothing seems to be wrong with it, except for the freezing, and the question-mark file folder icon worries me because the last time I saw it, my computer crashed. Does the folder icon mean something and is there anything I can do to keep the computer from freezing again?

How large is the hard drive and how much free space do you have?

  • MacBookAir freezing for no apparent reason

My new MacBookAir freezes for no apparent reason (e.g. in the middle of a Word document, in the middle of a Skype call, as well as in native Mac applications).  Happens at least 3-4 times a day.  Also seldom comes out of sleep without hanging.  Hardware test says everything is OK.  As a long time Mac user this is very disappointing and frustrating.  Ironically Windows 7 on Boot Camp seems to run just fine.  Makes me wonder why I bought a Mac - won't be buying another one anytime soon. Any ideas?

Not a temporary freeze - get those as well.
This is a full freeze (left it for a few hours without result).
Forced reboot - hold down the power key until it shuts down, then restart.

  • MacBookPro5 freezing for no apparent reason

    Hello everybody,
I used to be the proud owner of a MacBook Pro 2.66GHz 4GB RAM purchased in May 2009. For a year it just worked beautifully but about a week ago I started having problems. The MBP freezes and the only thing I am left to do is a manual shutdown.
I first thought that it could be related to my hard drive being fragmented or corrupted so I booted from the installation DVD and ran the disk utility to repair the booth drive and the rest of the HD including permissions. Just after I finished running everything it froze when I was watching a you tube movie with nothing else opened but entourage email client.
Then I thought of some kind of virus or spyware and got MacScan without any success.
I was thinking of restoring to factory default by having a clean install but I have been doing some Internet research and found that other MBP owners are having the same problem and complete re-installation has not been a final solution.
I do have an external monitor and both my USB ports are being used. One for an external keyboard and the second for a small hub where I have my external HD, printer and the iphone.
If this had happened a couple of months ago I would have taken it to the Apple store but my warranty expired by then and now I only want to take it there if it is a must.
    Any recommendation is well received.

    Hi Anitita,
Yes, it is a pain in the neck. I have been looking all over the Internet for possible ways to isolate this problem but its random behavior makes it very difficult. The worst part is that no matter which diagnostic test you run, the machine just comes out OK with no apparent problems.
I have applied some logic to the problem based on the information I have gathered from different Internet sources:
1.- Some say is hardware related because it has happened on both MAC and Windows 7 installations using the Intel based MacBook pro.
2.- Some others have concluded that it is a video problem because it has frozen during a youtube film and underneath there is still recorded in logs activity.
3.- Several people state that the problem is Memory and/or hard drives. They say it is related to the amount of free memory or disk space available.
4.- Some others have claimed they have been freeze free since they are not using either spotlight or time machine with a configured 1 hr backup period.
5.- There are a few that claim that after reseting NVRAM and PRAM the problem has gone away for a while.
6.- Finally there is a group that claims they isolated the problem and it was related to heating of the CPU or battery.
By my experience, I can say:
1.- It could be hardware related. My guess would be some part of the motherboard that has a very little use life and it is now overheating.
2.- If it is some hardware, it may as well be related to the NVIDIA graphic card. There were problems with an older model, so I would not scratch this one out just yet.
3.- If there is very little space in the disk or little RAM memory available it could make the computer collapse but you would get a different reaction or error.
4.- I stopped using both spotlight and time machine this morning and I can not rule them out yet.
5.- The typical failure related to the NVRAM or PRAM memories appears at boot time. That is not our case so I will not reset it yet.
6.- I installed iStat pro. A freeware widget that shows the temperature and fans speed of the mac. I have been monitoring all the time using iStat and I have got freezing behavior in both Cold and Hot temperatures of the CPU. By the way, fans are working just fine.
I did also tested the machine for spyware or viruses, just in case. It came out clean using macscan.
I have come to a conclusion with three main scenarios for this freeze:
1.- The first one could be the result of CPU/memory resources being totally consumed by opened/running processes. It could be any combination of the above mentions and that makes it difficult to track. In order to check this scenario I am deactivating most of the processes that demand a lot of CPU or Memory. I will not turn the machine off or unplug its power cable during that time. I will know more in a couple of days.
2.- I will also keep monitoring the heating problem specially if it is NVIDIA related. I have an external monitor and on my next freeze I will take the video adapter out and leave the machine alone for about 10 minutes to see what happens or if it recovers by itself.
The other part of the hardware problem could be the battery but some users are working without the battery and they keep getting the freeze.
3.- I guess if it is not any of the above, it will have to be motherboard related and that is what I don't want because my machine behaved perfectly for a year and 2 months, enough to get the warranty expired.
Both scenarios 2 and 3 have to be solved by an Apple Support Agent, if you are covered by warranty it will not cost you a dime. The problem is having them reproduce the failure and that is not easy to achieve. Scenario 1 is software/resources related and while a patch comes out, we could workaround it, if proven.
I will keep posting my findings here.

  • Vista constantly freezes for no apparent reason

My formerly stable Vista has over the last few months had increasing number of freezes, usually after being left idle overnight or for several hours.  There are multiple entries in the event log similar to the following:
"Faulting application EXCEL.EXE, version 12.0.6718.5000, time stamp 0x54e45be7, faulting module gdiplus.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x54c99538, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x731074b2, process id 0x1510, application start time
    0x01d0765688cea01f."
I have been experiencing lots of application crashes when I drag an Office app from one screen to another.  It can almost be produced at will if I have Explorer running at the same time.Any ideas welcome.  I have auto updates on for Windows Vista.
I am also having issues when installing/ updating purchased software.  I get errors writing to writing to file: C:\Config.Msi\xxxx despite my personal account having admin access.  I have a workaround where I login as Admin and that seems
to overcome the problem.  But now I notice the MSIInstaller is having problems - e.g. Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 -- Error 1310.Error writing to file: C:\Config.Msi\68638b.rbf.   System error 5.  Verify that you have
access to that directory.I have been holding off an upgrade pending the next version of Windows mainly to protect my access to many apps that I have purchased and not wanting to repurchase under a new OS.

Kindly go through the following KB Article to fix the issue.
How to troubleshoot Windows Installer errors
What happened to the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (MSICUU2.exe)?
After using the above Fixit Application run the setup to install Office.

  • Why does my new iMac keep freezing for no apparent reason?

Why does my new iMac keep freezing? This usually happens when it is not being used and is particularly frustrating when I do need to use it and ahve to switch off and then on again and wait for it to reboot.
I am not computer literate so keep any answers as simple and idiot friendly as possible. I treat it like a car. If I put in the key and turn the ignition on and the enginesprings into life I am content. If not.............. well!

In order to provide any help we need to understand a little bit more about the problem you are experiencing.
You indicated the issue occurs when the sytem is not being used. Does this mean that you stop working on the system and the system 'goes to sleep' where the screen goes black, but when you need to wake it back up by pressing keys on the keyboard or clicking the mouse the system doesn't wake back up? To test for this issue open the System Preferences and click on the Energy Saver preferences. See the 'Computer Sleep' slider to the far right 'Never' setting. You can set the 'Display sleep' setting to any number you prefer. With these settings see if the issue still occurs and let us know the results. If it resolves the issue then give Apple a call and let them know you are unable to wake the system when it goes to sleep. You shouldn't be having that issue.

  • When I am browsing the page will freeze for no apparent reason. I lose all ability to go to a new page either by entering an address or by clicking a link on the page. This does not appear to happen on any particular web page.

I am still connected to the internet

    Go back to FF3.6:

I did yesterday and have had no hangs today. I did NOT have to uninstall FF4.0, I just put 3.6 into a new directory.

  • My finder freezes for no apparent reason, What is happening?

The beachball appears and nothing happens, the most recent occurance was followed by a blank startup screen with no log in window and the only way to get anything working is to do aa hard reboot, which I hate doing cause that must mean something is seriously wrong...

I would navigate to the 10.6.8 update combo page and download and re-install 10.6.8. It's possible your download was corrupted somehow. After downloading and installing the update reboot from the 10.6.x install Disk, hold down the Option key at the startup tone and choose the Install Disc. Choose the language then click the Utilities menu and Repair Disk Permissions (2x) in Disk Utilities. Then exit and restart the computer normally.

  • My MacBook keeps freezing for no reason!

So I bought a MacBook about 3 weeks ago and I was super excited and I love this thing, but it keeps freezing for no apparent reason! I will just be on the internet, or listening to music on iTunes or chatting, and it will freeze. I can't get any response from the keyboard or the mousepad and if music is playing, it sounds like the track is skipping. I have to force shut it down by holding the power button down everytime this happens. Sometimes it will happen after 30 minutes, sometimes not for 3 hours. I took it in 2 weeks ago for a hardware check and it came up clear and they told me it should be fine and might be my wireless internet connection. I have a NETGEAR wireless router. So, I turned off airport and did other things on the computer and it ran fine for over 3 hours without freezing. I was convinced it was my internet. BUT.... I had my friend come over and hook up to my internet connection and we both were on our macbooks (she has the exact same model as me) and mine froze and hers was completely fine the whole time! I was really angry and confused, so I brought my macbook back in again last friday. They told me there was an airport update, so I downloaded it and it seemed to be working. But that night, it froze once again. I was so frustrated and didn't know what else to do, so I did a complete system reinstall to clear out any programs that may have been causing the problem. I was so sure that this was going to work. And it seemed like it did. It's been working all week without freezing. Until tonight. I was sitting at my desk, reading my email, listening to music on iTunes, and chatting on iChat. I wanted to move my computer, so I unplugged from the wall, sat in a different chair and didn't plug back into the wall. It was fine for about 2 minutes in the new location, and then it froze once again. I honestly don't know what to do other than just bring it back and ask for a new one. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Any other suggestions? I just want this to stop!!!

    Hi Stephen,
There seems to be alot of threads about this issue.
I just put 'freezes' into the search and loads came up.
It sounds like you've had a bad start with your new MB.
Does it get extra hot before it freezes?
There is a thread about the heat issue and freezing here...

Have a read and see if any of your problems are similar.
If it persists much longer I would get in touch with Apple again and get it sorted.
    Hope this helps!

  • Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive

Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive.
Tried to reset pram, smc, nvram.
    Tried installing new RAM.
    Tried installing new hard drive.
You should know that my internal drive is installed in a cheap external case and plugged in a USB 2.0 port because i am waiting for a new hard drive cable.all
Yep all good things happened to me...i don't know if all these problems are linked, ahh and also my trackpad is behaving very erraticaly sometimes, it's like it is possessed by a ghost. My computer is not under warranty anymore so i'd like to avoid a trip to the Apple store but i'm close to doing just that.
    Any help appreciated...

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:

would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

  • Macbook pro 13 inch mid 2010 crashing for no apparent reason

    Hi there guys,
My Macbook Pro for the last few months keeps crashing for no apparant reason. I say this because it does not seem to matter what program I am running, how many programs I am running, or indeed have anything to do with my software. Im now sure of this because I took it to the genius bar today and they gave me a system format/reset and the problem is still there.
They also ran diagnostics on the hardware and everything seemed to be ok...
Has anyone else had this problem? I'll paste my report after my latest crash below incase anyone can make heads or tails of it!
    Thanks everyone!

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by starting up in safe mode and then restarting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve starting up from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Even if FileVault is not active, an aftermarket SSD may be the cause of kernel panics. Check the manufacturer's website for a firmware update.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If the system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

  • The sign-in graphic changed on my macbook air for no apparent reason.  what's up?

The sign-in graphic changed on my macbook air for no apparent reason.  What's up?  How do I get it back to my chosen graphic and why did this happen?

When I originally set up the computer, I just chose a preloaded picture that was offered.  (For example, I chose the sunflower, but now I get an eagle--but never chose the latter).  It's not really a big deal, I was just worried that somehow my computer might have been tampered with.  The OS update may be why it changed.
How do I change it back--if you wouldn't mind taking the time to explain something that is probably very simple to a not too computer-savvy user.  Thanks!

Next time you want to put your iMac screen to sleep, try switching off the Magic Mouse, wait for the notification to come up on the screen telling you the Magic Mouse has been disconnected, wait for it to disappear then press the keyboard shortcut to put the screen to sleep. See if that helps and we'll go from there. If that doesn't help, can you just say wether the screen always turns back on the same time every time?
    Hope that helps

  • TS3276 I have no sound on my MacBook Air for sending and receiving messages. All sound settings have been checked and are OK. This problem has arisen many times and is intermittent in the sense that the sound returns and disappears for no apparent reason.

I have no sound on my MacBook Air for sending and receiving messages. All sound settings have been checked and are OK. This problem has arisen many times and is intermittent in the sense that the sound returns and disappears for no apparent reason.

Open System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects
Select:  Play user interface sound effects
And make sure the Mute box is not selected.
Now open Mail. From the Mail menu bar clik Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Make a selection from the:  New messages sound  pop up menu.

  • Hi folks! My MacBook Air is making awkward little chipping sound... For no apparent reason. My Macbook Pro does the same. Goes like "chip... chip... chip", always three times in a row, for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how this occurs? Thanks

It seems to be linked to the sound being on. When I mute the thing, it doesn't do it. When I plug headphones into it, it does it over the headphones.
    Thanks for your help!
