Macbook is slow; will it help to bring it in for repair?

My macbook has been getting progressively slower over the 2 years I've had it. It's becoming unusable. I'm using only about 30% of my memory.
I have called apple customer support and I did both of the things I was asked to do (delete system files and something else, I don't remember.) I was told that this was all they could do, at least over the phone.
Do you think that the Genius Bar people would be able to speed it up?
The nature of my school/work (CS major) is such that being without a laptop is a huge inconvenience. If it isn't going to help to send it in for repair, I'd rather just buy another computer... maybe a PC.
Thanks for any advice/experiences you can share.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • If I buy a new macbook with Apple, will they help me install a dual operating system?

I've heard Bootcamp does this, but I've never owned a Mac before, and am daunted by the change. I would love a Mac for ease of use, as many of my friends seem to love it, but for school purposes, my PC laptop is better. My PC needs to be updated, though, and I really want to spring for the Mac, I just don't want to lose being able to not have to do my homework in a computer lab. A friend has dual operating systems on hers, and says it works beautifully for running both, though I don't know what macbook she's got. If I go to an Apple store and get a laptop from them, even bring the Windows 7 operating system (I'm NOT doing Windows 8), will they help do this for me? Does anyone know if it is alright to have the dual systems, or if it takes away from the hardware's ability to work? ANY advice is welcome.

It  is not hard. Boot Camp allows running Windows natively, same as on a laptop PC would be with a few differences in fan and thermal control and drivers.
Once installed natively which would be dual-boot setup, you can then install and use VMware or Parallels to assign the Windows partition for use as a VM inside OS X, no more need to dual boot unless you want to.
All of the information can be printed out from Boot Camp Assistant utility, or from the support help page and link to the manual:

  • Can i bring into genius for repairs if i bought it from a reseller?

I am wanting to puchase the iMac 27".  I do qualify for education pricing, however, I see B&H photo offers no tax, free shipping, half off AppleCare, free Parallels for way cheaper than my student pricing.
My question is, I worry about if something is wrong with it.  I want to be able to bring in into an Apple Store and not have to ship back and forth to a reseller.
I have read others posts that Apple tells the customer to deal directly with the reseller, but that does not make sense if you have Apple Care.
Can anyone help?  I need to order it by tomorrow.
Thank you for any help you have.

If you did not buy it from apple they will not replace it with a replacement unit they do make you wait for repair parts to come in
Sorry, but you should read the warranty - it does not state such a thing. Apple - like most manufacturers - allows themselves options and the options are that they will "repair or replace" - it is of no consequence where the unit was purchased. The machine is Apple and the warranty is by Apple. No matter where it was purchased, they will at first attempt to repair the problem; usually a minimum of three same repairs need to have been attempted before they may agree to replace the machine.

  • MacBook Extremely Slow to Sleep - Help!

My macbook has always taken under 10 seconds to launch into sleep mode (either from apple menu or closed top). In the last 3 weeks however, the time to sleep (ie: screen off, blinking light) is appx 40-50 seconds. I'm not sure what has happened. I know there are 3rd party software options to reduce the time to launch into sleep, but what I'm looking for is a way to debug my machine to restore it to it's past performance level. Past posts have indicated that problems can be found in the console posts, however I am not confident of my ability to diagnose anything from these. Can anyone help? • Macbook Pro Slow/Disk space help please

I have mad skills in other areas, but not computer management.    Help appreciated!
My older Macbook Pro is slowing down.   Websites are slow to load, switching from one app to another takes way too long.  I looked up reasons and low disk space seems likely.  I ran EtreSoft and got the into below.
My confusion:  I can't figure out what is taking up 150 gig of space.  I have tons of pics and videos, but still only 38 gig worth.
Any advice?   Thanks for your help!

You did a good job outlining the potential problems, but I still have some questions:
    1. What's the size of your MB's monitor?
    2. Have you backed up your data? If not, do so.
    3. Aside from the problems you noted, have you observed any other issues?
    4. Did you check the internal cables and connectors?
    Post with your results!

  • Will somebody help me bring back my original harddrive, email, etc?

Am I doing something wrong in the questions I've asked? I apparently haven't had any response to my queries from several days ago. Thanks for your help. JL

    Hi, Judy.
You wrote: "I then moved icons out of HOME, inadvertantly, and lost my emails, all my bookmarks, stickies, CALENDAR."That was an unfortunate mistake.
For Thunderbird help, I suggest you consult the Thunderbird Support site. They also have a community support forum where you can search or post for Thunderbird help.
I don't use Thunderbird. However, a quick search of their documentation indicates that:
    • Thunderbird Mail is stored in your Profile folder.
    • The default location for the profile folders under Mac OS X can be found here. They state the Profile folders for Mac OS X are:
    ~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/<Profile name>/
    ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<Profile name>/
In terms of Finder navigation, these would be:
    • Your Home > Library > Mozilla > Firefox > Profiles > yourprofilename folder.
    • Your Home > Library > Applications Support > Firefox > Profiles > yourprofilename folder.
To find where these folders may be now, you might try the following Spotlight search:
    firefox kind:folder
which will search your hard drive for all folders with firefox in the folder's name. Copy and paste that search criterion into the Spotlight search field. Once you find them, then you can determine if they need to be moved back where Thunderbird expects to find them.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but I suspect the "clean up" you performed may have left you with a bit of a mess that you may be unable to sort out on your own. The clean up you performed also leads me to suspect that you may be somewhat new to the Mac or Mac OS X.
You may want to get some hands-on help from someone skilled with Mac OS X in resolving this problem:
    • If you have a friend with more experience in troubleshooting Mac OS X, I'd suggest asking them to come over and provide some help.
    • If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, you might want to call them to discuss the bringing your iMac there to get some hands-on help from the folks at the Genius Bar. Apple offers ProCare to help folks with such issues. For some folks, ProCare is money well spent.
If you're new to the Mac or Mac OS X, you may find my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ helpful. It lists a number of resources that will help you shorten the learning curve, including books, online training, and more.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook 2009 Slow with Mavericks - Help Needed with EtreCheck Report

I just completed my upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks last week. I  finished applying all of the software updates after the initial install of Mavericks. The only problem is that my computer is running a lot slower than before. This seems to be common for 2009 MacBooks, so I ran EtreCheck but am not sure what else I can do to improve my performance. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you are using CrashPlan, I would modify its behavior so it is not running backups while you are actually using your Mac.
You need to have CrashPlan run while you are away from Mac for extended periods of time.
Update all of your Web browser Internet extensions and plugins, also.
Especially, make sure your Telestream Flip4Mac video plugin is updated to its latest version.
There have been user reports of issues with earlier versions of Flip4Mac plugin and Mavericks.
Also, if you have any connected,  third party devices, like non-Apple keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to go to each device makers' websites to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions, if available and applicable.

  • F4 help not bringing in data for Attribute maintenance

    Hello SRm Folks,
I am having this issue wherer I am trying to put default values for attributes in PPOMA_BBP. When I select the attribute and put the source system as the backend R3 it doesn't pull any values. For example for attribute BSA (document type in R/3) if I put R/3 as backened systen it doesn't pull any values. If I remove the system then it shows me the values from SRM. I am having this issue with a lot of attributes like movement type, funds, functional area etc. I have defined the backend system correctly and checked all my RFC destinations, they seem to be fine.
    Any suggestions

    Hi
As per standard you must get all values existing in the back end when you select attributes .
check both ways srm to r/3 and vice versa as well as check rfc user properties like type of user and profile sap all and new .
    regards
    Muthu

  • New Macbook, bringing in for repair

Hi, My Macbook is less than a month old and I'm having problems with it (sometimes doesn't turn on, potential logic board problems etc)
I'm planning to take it to a Authorized Apple Servicer, but would it cause any problems that my HD is partionally partitioned to WindowsXP operating system? Should I remove that part before bringing it in for repair?
    Thanks

That shouldn't cause problems at all, especially if you used Boot Camp to do it. Apple has put Boot Camp out there so should expect that some machines are going to come in with Windows installed on a second partition.
No need to remove it that I can imagine.

my hard drive is damaged. I'm using disk utility; can I safely use CHECKSUM? will it help or give me info?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!
    Julie
