Macbook just getting grey screen after Itunes update

I have a macbook that won't boot up. It was updating some software, Itunes included and required a restart. Well, it never restarted, just a grey screen. Is this a known issue? I know my macbook is just out of warranty (of course). Is apple doing anything about this or is this just my computer? Please help, I'm freaking out!

A grey screen (no Apple logo) on startup, be it after an update or not is typically an indication of hardware failure on the machine. It's possible that the update "broke" a startup file, which would prevent you from booting into the OS but typically if that were the case the machine would get further into the startup sequence.
Do you have access to the system restore discs that came with your computer? If so, put the first one in, restart the computer and hold the "option" key. Are you presented with icon(s) that look like a HD or CD-ROM?

  • MacBook hanging on grey screen after SMC Firmware Update

Hi, I'd be very grateful if someone could offer some help with my current problem.
I have a black macBook to which this morning, I applied the SMC update. After restart, I heard a chime and the grey screen came up - all good so far......
.....except 20 minutes later, the grey Apple screen (with rotating progress thing) is still there, awaiting the lovely blue screen which just doesn't want to appear for whatever reason.
Tried resetting PMU, zapping PRAM with no joy.
    Any help gratefully received.
iMac 20inch Rev. B and Black MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I had the same thing happen to me while updating my girlfriends macbook last night..
I started off by booting my 17" mbp via firewire from her machine, and repairing disk / permissions.. didnt work, I tried booting her HD from my MBP and it spun forever too. did the PMU reset and Pram too ( 3 times ), no change..
Solution: Archive and Install and then re-patched everything...
the macbook works now and the SMC firmware installed perfectly this time.

  • Macbook stuck on grey screen during software update reboot

After I run my software updates, it tells me that I need to reboot to install them. However, it gets stuck on a grey "Software Update" screen. It will not allow me to force quit. I've even left the computer on overnight, still there. I have to do a hard shut down. Also, when I do boot it up and continue normal activity and attempt to do a normal shut down it takes me back to that grey Software Update screen. Even if I didn't try and run it for the day. Each time, hard shut down.
I took it to Geek Squad 2 weeks ago for this issue and a kernel error. They shipped it to Apple repair. They fixed the kernel error, but I cannot get this to update or remove the grey screen. I dread having to take it back in...but my warranty will expire next month. Any ideas? I am not getting the continuos spinning circle at that page or the Apple logo that I've read about.
    Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro Getting Significantly Hotter After New Update

Since getting the new Flash update with hardware accelleration, I've been noticing a significant rise in temperature (when before it wouldn't get hot to the touch much at all) when on sites with Flash. On the Apple discussion forums other people seem to be having the same issue with the new update. Is this known to Adobe and will there be anything done about it? Thanks.
My model is 15" Macbook Pro 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Mid 2009) with Nvidia 9400 and 4GB RAM with OSX 10.6.4 and Flash 10,1,82,76.

What happens when you turn off hardware acceleration?  Do things cool down a bit?
And while we're on the subject, did you ever download and try out the "Gala" preview release?  Gala had some additional hardware acceleration capabilities that arrived a little too late to make it into the official (10.1.82.76) version.

  • How to get back library after iTunes update?

All of my music is installed in a folder named iTunes Music on a USB external hard drive. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I might have made a mistake. Without the external hard drive attached to my laptop, I downloaded and installed the most recent version of iTunes for windows. With the external drive attached, I opened iTunes and the library is gone and the entire music panel in iTunes is empty. I tried to change the library back to F:iTunes Music, the folder where the music is stored, but nothing happened. What do I do now? Please help.

Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ (or C:\Username\Music\iTunes\ in Vista). Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact. If you had moved your previous library to the external drive navigate to it and open the library file from there: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.

At startup I get grey screen and a folder with a flashing question mark.  How do I reset my MacBook Pro to the manufacture defaults?

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • I keep getting a msvcr80.dll error after iTunes update failed?

I keep getting a msvcr80.dll error after iTunes update failed?

Seems the base of the problem is the update installation does not change the libraries but the software wants to see them changed.  So the user has to go clear out all software that shares the libraries and then install the full version so they are rebuilt properly.
