MacBook just returned from repair and DVD drive blocked!

Hi,
I just got my MacBook back from repair (screen flicker) but there is something seriously wrong with my DVD drive...
I can't put a disc in -- it feels like it's blocked. At first I thought the engineers might have left a disc in there, but I can't get it to eject.
What to do?
Steve.

I just received a refurb macbook yesterday, unpacked it, and when I went to insert a CD into the drive, I had the same exact prob you have. I made appt with Genius bar and they looked at it... they said it was a quite common prob with the drive going out of alignment when they snap the case shut during assembly. The Genius took a small plastic tool, wrapped the tip with tape and pried the slot which caused the drive to align properly. Of course, my mind started to wonder, it this fix just a band aide, or is it really fixed? … but I guess I was just happy not to have to send it out, the same day I received it, for repair… and if I continue to have probs with the drive, the Apple Store is just a block from where I work, and I have the AppleCare I bought with the $ I saved w/ buying a refurb.

I have just returned home from holiday and reset my phone to icloud (having said it wouldn't lose any information) I now find that I appear to have lost all my holiday photos.  Has anyone got an idea how to retrieve them?

If you've enabled PhotoStream, you should be able to find photos there. Otherwise, you are SOL.

  • Bootcamp woes, unable to boot from USB and DVD drive reads all DVDs blank

My partner and I are completely unable to install Windows using Bootcamp.  We have tried dozens of solutions on the internet.
2011 iMac (purchased in by me and my partner 2012) reads all DVDs as blank.  We have (hilariously) another Mac, an MBP, that has the same exact problem.  You'd almost think "Superdrives" eventually just stop working or something.  So obviously we can't install Bootcamp on the iMac using a DVD.
But what about a USB stick?  Well after modifying the plist file and writing a bootable Windows USB and trying to boot from that, we were greeted with the mysterious and apparently yet-unsolved "no bootable device" error.
So our iMac can't boot from USB drives or read DVDs.  We've only owned it for two years.  And this is the second Mac we've owned where the Superdrive has died.  And we don't even use DVDs more than like once a year.
But anyway, can someone tell me what we're supposed to do if we want to install Windows aside from throwing money away to buy another Superdrive that is probably going to die again in a year?  Maybe a way to make our mac boot from our USB stick?  Something?
    Thanks.

Should you have another drive with a MBR, use it to rule that issue out. Alternatively create a GPT on the flash drive and try to boot from it.
What options are there for the usb controller/boot priorities/order/options? Does the laptop recognize the usb flash when already in bios setup? Should there be any form of choosing the device to boot, use that with the flash drive in the socket, then switch it with the external drive.

  • MacBook just back from repair, whining now?

    Hello Everyone,
My Macbook suffered from that awful discoloration issue, and I sent it in a month ago to get the case replaced. While it was there, the Apple people said that they needed to replace the logic board too...
So it took them a whole month to get it back to me. And now, finally - I just plugged it back in! But, now, to my dismay, there is an awful squealing whenever the power supply is plugged in. What the **** is this all about? Is there a solution? Should I send it back!?
    - Alex

If you send it back you'll probably get another whiner. It's annoying, but typical for MacBooks (MBPs too). The whining is caused by the CPU saving power (if I'm correct) when it's hardly being used.
Try to not let it get to you and in a while you won't even hear it anymore. I'm speaking from personal experience. I'll sometimes hear it when I'm in a really quiet room studying or during lectures/seminars at college. I let it go.
Just enjoy your fixed MB !
    Billy.

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works
    Any ideas, solutions?
System Windows 7, firewall Comodo Internet security
    Thanks everyone for the help

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

I have a 2007 Macbook, so it's probably a lot older than your Macbook Pro, but it sounds like what happened to me, except that mine hadn't travelled anywhere. I pulled out the ram and blew out some dust, popped them back in, and wha-la! it turned back on and worked better than ever! Or otherwise you've got a dud/old/warped/fried battery, which is also what happened to my laptop - it got so  bad it did what your laptop is doing. Ordered a new battery online and all good since then. Or otherwise, like the previous post asked, 'is it plugged in?'

  • I just switched from pc and want to get printer drivers to work with macbook air.  How do I do that?

I just switched from pc and want to get my HP all in one printer to work with macbook air.  Is it just as simple as downloading drivers from HP?

Turn the printer on and plug the printer into the MBA and your mac should install the printer for you (usually any necessary drivers too).  I had a printer I used on a pc and I plugged it into my macs usb port and my mac automatically recognized it and took care of everything for me.  If you do this and it wont print, then yes go to the HP website the install latest drivers for 10.7

  • How do I run system recovery dvd from an external dvd drive?

I am having trouble trying to restore my DV 6000 (dv6915nr) from an external dvd drive.  I am aware that this laptop has had several hardware issues, including the loss of use of the internal dvd drive and have tried all the fixes that I could find, including changing filter settings in the registry, changinging the boot order in the bios and even removing the intenal drive.  Since none of these fixes worked, I removed the hard drive and installed window 7 Prodessional in a desktop computer.  After reinstalling drive in laptop, I installed all the Vista drivers from HP.  Computer works fine except for sound card and Nic that failed and have been replaced by USB devices.  Simce I am not 100% sure the hardware failures are motherboard failures and not software, I would really like to run my System Restore DVDs that I purchased from HP.  And that's where I need help.
I am A Plus and Network Plus certified, so I am pretty sure  that I have tried all the obvious soutions.  Evedrything turned on, checked the cables, accessed dvd in wimdows and even ran restore disk in a desktop machine to the point that it told me I was trying to restore the wong computer.  I downloaded a program called Win To Flash that allows you to copy a setup disk to an external hard drive, but that didn't work.  HP restore disk does not have  Setup file on it, so it wouldn't copy to drive.  Tried just copying the disk to external and that didn't work either.  Also tried switching drive letters D and E without any success.
    Bios choices are:
    USb floppy
    ATAPI cd/dvd rom drive
    USB diskette on key
    Notebook Hard drive
    Network Adapter
Original restore partition is long gone.
I would rather restore it with an external Hard drive, not an USB memory stick.  I think both would work the same.  I do have an USB floppy drive, if there is some way of starting installation from floppies.
Like I said, I really like the computer, even with all its faults, but I would like to restore it to its original  Operating System.

Some progress, I got it to try to boot from an external hard drive.  Downloaded a program called WINToboot. tried to run it, got as far as formatting my  hard drive and might have loaded some kind of boot program.  Would not copy my restore disks because they did not have set up program.  Copied both restore disks to hard drive and tried to boot laptop.  F0 produced choose external hard drive choice.  Got "no OS found" error. only choice ctl alt del. I think I am headed in right direction.  Just need to know what to load on external hard drive.
