MacBook just stopped working

I have a 2011 15" MacBook Pro that stopped working today. I was ripping a DVD onto it using software I had just downloaded off of the Internet. I left it for about 20 minutes and came back and it was off and won't turn on. When I left the battery was at about 60%. I put it on the charger but the light is green so it is not charging. I have the most expensive norton antivirus on it and the website I downloaded the DVD ripper off of was the only website I've been on in the last few weeks that isn't in my normal rutine of web surfing. I haven't had any problems with this computer up until a week ago when I was playing a game i downloaded off of the app store and it randomly shut off but when I turned it back on everything ran normal. My brother said it sounded like it was working hard while I was gone but it does that every once in a while so I assume that is normal. I hope I've given enough information for an informed suggestion.

If you have AppleCare, you should call them. If you don't, and you don't want to pay for a technical support call, take your system to your local Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • My MacBook just stopped working.

I was just watching a programme from the BBC on the internet and put the laptop to one side. Next thing I know the screen is black as if the battery is dead. It had enough charge when I was watching the programme. The battery indicators don't light up at all. When I plug the charger in it glows green but not bright, and then it flickers between green and amber. I have tried holding the power button for about 30 secs - nothing. :(

You supplied no info about your os or which model computer you have.  So take your pick...
MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues .  The affected computers  were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008.
MacBook Pro (Early 2008): Dark bands showing intermittently on built-in display
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video.  Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.

    Hi krishna706,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone is working but the screen is dark, try these steps next:
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
Try to restore your phone and set it up as new.

  • My macbook air stopped working suddenly and started beeping no backlight ...just beeping

my macbook air stopped working...and started beeping...how do I recover...no backlight ....just beeping

three beeps in a row?  That indicates the RAM is bad on the logic board.
verify the scheme of the beeps and report back.
3 beeps = RAM is bad
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

I was using Safari , 5 tabs open, when my macbook pro just stopped working .What can i do ??

Press the Power button for about 10 seconds to shutdown the computer. Wait a couple of minutes then restart. If it restarts OK, then immediately repair the hard drive:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • MacBook Charger just stops working!

Ok, so I am on my 3rd charger the 3rd one is literally 6 months old and it just stops working. All of them have... and when I go to the genius bar nobody can help me, they just suggest a buy a new one. Of course, those are over $80 including tax... and I am sick of spending that. I mean, I do nothing out of the ordinary. My charger is plugged in the power outlet and I dont move it, I dont play with it, I dont abuse it, it dont do anything but charge my laptop.
So can somebody please tell me whey they just start working and where I can buy a charger that will at least last me a couple of years?????? I mean, does apple create these issues purposely so I spent $80 every 6 months??? Not cool!!!

yup that was it.. The bumper has a little plastic piece that stooped the charger from fully seating... So I had to perform surgery on my $29.00 Apple bumper so the accessory that are made for it fit.. Nice...

  • I have pluged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
    Help.

    BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

  • Apple TV Airplay Just Stopped Working

Apple TV Airplay Just Stopped Working.  I have a second Apple TV that still works with the same connecting devices and no problems.  Running 10.8 on my macbook Retina, iphone 5 is up to date and ipad has latest.  One day I went to connect and it wouldn't show on my macbook as an available airplay.
So frustrating, I have reset, re-connected via wifi, turned airplay on and off, checked setting on my machine, made sure I am on the same wifi network... still nothing.

BTW, I should clarify, I am specifically having a problem mirroring.  Home sharing is on and all my library is there, just no mirroring.

  • Why do some keyboard shortcuts just stop working?

Since upgrading to Lion, some of my keyboard shortcuts - especially one for Mail - just stops working now and then and the only thing I can figure out to fix it is to restart the macbook.
The main one I've had trouble with is ⌘+ enter to send a message.
It seems (unreal, I know) that certain messages disable it in replies.
Any other way you can think of to reset the keystroke other than restarting?
    Thanks
    Tom

    Hi there
Sounds like the project has somehow become corrupt. You may need to create a new project and copy/paste slides. You may also find that this will transfer over the issue. So it could be limited to a specific slide or even a single object on a slide.

  • DHCP just stopped working !?

Hi, I have Macbook Air SSD running Leopard 10.5.2 (9C7010). Boot ROM version MBA11.00BB.B03
It would appear that in the middle of the day, DHCP just stopped working. It doesn't matter whether wireless or connecting via the USB ethernet adaptor. If I want to get network connectivity, I have to manually assign the right IP address, router address, subnet mask and DNS addresses.
While I was travelling from UK to India this weekend, DHCP just stopped working - default "Automatic" network location.
It worked at home, it worked from the BA airport lounge.
When I arrived at hotel in India, I could not connect. Network Prefs reported a locally assigned IP address. I contacted their IT dept and got static IP address, router address, DNS addresses, and then everything was fine again.
In the office in India, no joy again with DHCP and it reported locally assigned IP address. Again, when I got static IP/router/DNS from our IT helpdesk, everything was fine.
Now I returned home, and it's just the same. DHCP not working, but if I assign a static IP address on my own home 10.x.x.x subnet and manually tell it the gateway address and DNS servers, everything is fine again.
I have rebooted quite a few times. I didn't install any new software or change any settings - it seems to have simply stopped working on the plane between UK and India !
Anyone else had DHCP problems like this ? Or have any idea how to get it working again ?
    Cheers
    The Baron.

Just got back from the Apple Genius Bar.
They booted my MBA from a separate boot disk, and the DHCP worked fine. That proved it was a software settings fault rather than a hardware fault.
They then tried deleting all the Locations from network setup, and adding a brand new fresh one. Sadly that had no luck.
They then advised me to try an archive/install of OS X from the original media. If the archive/install doesn't work, they said to come back to the Genius Bar with the install media and they will book a longer appointment
When I got home, I first created my own boot disk on a spare USB hard drive, and confirmed that if I boot my MBA from this fresh installation, the DHCP works just fine. So I am hopeful about the archive/install.
I am trying it now. If I have any luck, I will let you know. Also how painful it is copying over previous user settings, applications and so on.

  • Airport just stopped working

    Hi Everyone,
I hopw someone has some info that might help.
I have a MacBook and PC (yuck). Both just stopped working with my Airport Extreme, and when I tried plugging the ethernet cable directly into both, nothing happened. No data was transferring.
I called my cable company and they were able to get my PC working, directly connected, but not the MacBook.
When the ethernet cable is plugged directly into the MacBook, nothing happens...no lights showing it's connected to the computer. When I connect the ethernet cable to the Airport, everything lights up, showing a connection, but I can't get the data to transfer from Airport to MacBook (or PC for that matter).
Right now, I'm hijacking someone else's wireless signal in my condo...don't really know who. So, I know my Airport card is working properly.
The tech at Brighthouse cable saod something about earthlink customers having trouble recently because of something that earthlink downloaded to them, where IP addresses wouldn't renew. I never downloaded anything, is this possible?
I'm really stumped, and frustrated because I can't connect, and it's not feasible for me to hardwire in due to the location of my cable modem. Plus, that only works with the crappy PC, and I don't want to use that.
Please, someone help...I'm desperate...and at a loss for what the problem could be!
    Thank you!!!!
EDIT: I just powered up my old iBook G4, and it won't connect to my base station either
EDIT X2: I should probably add what I have already tried...I have (several times) unplugged the cable modem and Airport base station. Used Airport set up to re-set it (again, several times).

    Ok MCOJerry,
    Here's the scoop.
My friend called and gave me the story much like you described. Almost identical in fact.
He had called TimeWarner, who didn't come to any resolution and then referred him to Earthlink, washing their hands in the process.
A over seas tech support then spend a couple of hours, then made a call back with another tech. who also spent significant time on the phone. This time the tech reconfigured OSX a couple of times. Set up alternate location profiles, changed the DNS settings etc.
They re-assigned the IP address and forced the cable modem to init. the MAC address list. They also disconnected the Airport Extreme (the square version) connected the mac directly to the modem and forced a manual set of IP settings.
They got the mac to work with this last configuration, but of course the rest of the machines were out of luck as was the network printer.
All in all he spent six hours on the phone.
When I got 'the call' I had him give me some preliminary network stats and then had him reconnect the Airport Extreme. This yielded a dead internet connection.
So as I wrote earlier, I went over there armed with a boat load of tools & cables.
I reconfigured the mac to a normal & stable automatic type configuration. I also reset the the Airport buy pressing the reset button for 5sec. Then set up a new configuration. I made sure that the latest update was applied to the Airport extreme.
Then I logged on to the cable modem. Don't mis-understand, I did not log on to the internet through the modem. I logged on to the modem's internal web server. checked some logs and ran a couple of tests.
Then I found the problem. The real problem: The signal power level from the point of demarcation (at the pole) was so low as to be useless. Eliminating the Airport Extreme, simply removed a level of complication in the system. It also may have removed some spurious RF that may have been introduced into the network. It did not result in a resolution to the real problem.
The cable line needs to be physically repaired. Either a wet connection or a frayed shield or the line needs a booster. But the problem, which looked like a Airport extreme issue is in fact a bad cable line.
I do have him up and running on the Airport Extreme at this moment by eliminating all extraneous length from his cable line within the house. The cable modem is now located in the basement where the cable enters the house. I have an single ethernet cable running from there to the Airport Extreme. I pulled all the other electrical items from this particular power line branch (This specific circuit.) This is all temporary until the cable guy/gal arrives to fix the problem.
I hope this may help you in your trouble resolution.
    -Alan

  • Airport Extreme Card just stopped working -help!!

I've had my MacBook Pro since mid August with a built Airport Extreme Card. It has for most of the time been working fine with my Netgear router. Yesterday it just stopped working. The black bars aren't showing on the aiport, it keeps refusing to accept the WEP password.
I have tried switching the airport on and off, and have also switched off the router and re started it, all to no avail. The WEP password is correct.
I have a WIFI printer connection and the airport will not connect to that either.
This has happened once before about 6 weeks ago but I can't remember what I did, if anything, to remedy the situation.
I have 3 other laptops all working perfectly well on the system, and all printing from the printer without any problems.
Any suggestions before I and the laptop go hurtling through the first floor window?
