Macbook keeps addressing CD drive every 10 seconds during sleep.

HI My macbook won't enter sleep when the lids is shut. It keeps adressing the cd drive every 10 second or so and I remain logged into iChat even with the lid down.
I have all the latest update etc . What can I do?
Also if I put the macbook to sleep manualy with the lid up as it adresses the hard drive it wakes up again.
Please help
Thanks

i have this problem also. when i simply shut the lid, the computer refuses to go into sleep mode. not sure if it's a hardware or software problem or both, but IMHO it's a problem with "safe sleep" that apple has implemented in all their new laptops.
a solution i've found is using "Deep sleep" a program which puts the macbook into a hibernation mode instead. http://deepsleep.free.fr/
it's a widget. just use instead. it takes a few more seconds to boot back up (about 8 seconds or so) but it's worth the piece of mind, especially when transporting in a laptop bag!

  • Macbook keeps waking itself up every 10 seconds

    Hi
I upgraded to ilife 09 and snow leopard a while back so not sure if this is related but suddenly my old macbook won't sleep. If I leave it, close the lid or manually hit sleep it just whirrs back into action like it's waking itself up and trying to read a disc maybe.... Can't find any fix online. Tried taking battery out and no luck there. Help appreciated

Hi again, I will try the RAM reset and see what happens. The bluetooth says blutetooth not available - perhaps this is it. My other later work macbook running same time same place has all teh usual bluetooth options..... Can the bluetooth thing be fixed?
Your bluetooth is fine. Unfortunately, it sits on the USB bus, which isn't. I didn't piece all this together until after my machine was out of warranty. If you still have some AppleCare left, take it in.
If not, there is no way around it. The bluetooth will come back on at random times. The sleep may even start working again. Just don't ever rely on it. After you close the lid, make sure the light pulses before leaving the machine. If it wakes up, shut it down. You can install iLid so that even if the lid pops open (while in a bag, for example) it won't wake the machine.

  • Address Book: Refreshing Every Few Seconds. . .

... not doing anything unusual, Sharing is (???) and Contacts are all local: first notice this occurrence when simply editing / adding new contacts to the address book; in the middle of editing each card, it just (what appears to be) refreshes each card, by card, by card; all 1000+ of them ... it also does this during any kind of interaction with Address book, ie: adding / deleting / viewing / searching ... doesn’t matter what you are doing; if interacting with address book, it stops responding (losing command of the app), and appears to update each and every card; then later comes back to your control... this happens like every few seconds during your session with Address Book.

  • HT1338 why does my imac keep making a noise every 30 seconds when I am not using it?

My iMac keeping making a sound (sort of a clicking sound) every 30 seconds when I am not using it. It is very annoying; is therre a way to stop it?

Bring it in to service, and ask them to tell you what the noise is.  Sometimes it just is the optical drive realigning itself.   It could be the sign of a dying hard drive.  Only they can tell the difference.

  • 24" iMac has buzzing sound every 5 min during sleep after upgrading to is x lion

I have a 24" iMac purchased new in 2009.  Haven't had a problem and usually put it to sleep mode at night with no problem.  I recently upgraded to OS X Lion and started noticing 2 problems during sleep mode.  One is a constant humming noise that wasn't there before, as if the computer is still running.  Second problem is that every 5 to 10 min or so, a slight buzzing sound pops up.
The noise poses as a real problem during the night as I have the iMac in my bedroom.  I'm forced to completely shut down very evening to avoid the noise.  Can anyone help?  Thank you in advance.

I have a similar problem on my early 2008 macbook pro. After the audio driver is idle for a minute or so (after an itunes playlist or youtube video ends) the headphone jack output starts buzzing horribly, to the point where i have to turn off my soundsystem or play a muted song to “wake up“ the card and stop the buzzing. This must be due to different power management parameters in Lion, as it started immediately after the upgrade and disappeared after I reformatted and returned to Snow Leopard. Maybe there is a way to force the audio hardware to stay active?

  • Macbook sleep wakes every 8 seconds in sleep, does same with shut down

I just upgraded to X 6.6. and now choosing sleep from menu puts it to sleep only to wake in 8 seconds. I tried the menu shut down and it rebooted in 8 seconds. It woke up even with the top closed.
I can only turn it off with the power button.
Anybody know how to fix it?

    Also, there's this.....
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Some have resolved sleep issue by downloading the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try
    USER TIPS……..
Check in System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked? If so, uncheck it.
One user reported, " I couldn't make my macbook pro to go to sleep because I had my wireless headphone receiver still plugged in. I unplugged it and then it went to sleep."
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed
WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
One provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
"I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
One user has had success, after trying all these tips, using an App. called PleaseSleep. I've never used it though.

  • My 13" black macbook keeps having hard drive failures -- I'm on my third hard drive

The first one lasted 2 years. It failed within the special warranty period that Apple offered because so many computers like mine were also having hard drive failures. I didn't know about the special warranty they were offering, even after contacting Apple and telling them about my problem and describing the exact symptoms of the problem they were fixing for free. Thank you for that. So I went to a local store and paid ~$130 to have it fixed. This time I was paranoid about not moving my computer, and if I did have to move it, make sure it was off. Then without warning, it happens again less than 2 years later. I would expect a computer hard drive, especially one that is taken care of as well as mine, to last more ~20 months (less than 2 years) TWICE. It seems that this is a problem not with the hard drive but with the computer. I'm pretty upset that hard drives are now basically disposable -- I'm afraid to use it now unless absolutely necessary, otherwise I'll feel like I'm making its clock tick closer and closer to the next time it fries the hard drive. For as much as I paid for this computer, I expect a bit more than that. Unless there is some magical fix to this, I can safely say my next computer will be a super cheap net book.
Does anyone have any more info on this, any ways to avoid frying more hard drives, or has any one had any luck resolving this issue with Apple? I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!

Mechanical hard drives have moveable parts and they are going to fail eventually. Every drive has an MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) rating in the thousands of hours, but that is an average (half will fail sooner, half will fail later) not an absolute longevity guarantee.
I've used an original (Apple-OEM Fujitsu 120Gb 5400rpm), a Hitachi 320Gb 7200rpm, and currently a Seagate 500Gb 7200rpm drive in my mid-2007 MacBook. I replaced the 120Gb because I was running out of room. I still use it as an external backup for certain files. The 320Gb Hitachi failed after less than two years, but had a three-year-warranty, so it was replaced at no charge. I'm using the Hitachi replacement externally to clone my current drive in order to test OS X and software updates before installing them 'for keeps' on my working system.
A solid-state (SSD) drive might be less prone to mechanical failure, but that is still no absolute guarantee that it won't EVER fail, and SSD's are still about double or more the cost of mechanical drives.
The best thing is to simply be prepared for the eventual failure with a strategy for frequent and reliable backups.

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.

  • MacBook keeps blacking out for a few seconds

I have a weird new problem. It started blacking out (I thought it had switched itself off but it hasn't, it comes right back as it was after a few seconds) around every half hour or so. But now, just a few days after the problem began, it is blacking out every few minutes. Luckily it comes right back on and I don't lose anything, but it is annoying and certainly not right! Any ideas what this could be related to and how to fix it?

It sounds like it is either the inverter cable or the inverter board. Probably the latter. You can find repair guides, parts, and tools on ifixit.com. If your computer is under warranty, take it to an Apple store and have them fix it.

  • Ipod Nano 4GB Keeps connecting and disconnecting every few seconds

when i plug the nano into a usb port... it shows up everywhere and then disconnects and then reconnects and keeps doing this, therefore i can update my ipod?
Also... the ipod works fine on the xp pc next door so i have to assume its the USB on my pc.
    Running Windows Vista RC2

My 80 GB iPod Classic is having the same problem -- when I connect it to the computer, it syncs as it should and then when I attempt to disconnect it, it starts syncing again. It does this no matter whether I disconnect through iTunes or through the desktop (i.e., dragging the iPod icon to the dock to eject it). This never happened before a software update last week. I forget the update but it was something to do with the Intel processor, I think. My date and time was also screwed up but when I woke up this morning that was finally ok.

When I tried to run the repair disk permissions I get am error message stating "no valid packages."
    Any suggestions ?
This usually means someone has tinkered with the contents of /Library/Receipts & removed the ".pkg" or ".bom" items in it that tell the permissions repair procedure what the correct permissions should be. (See About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature for the full story.)
As a rule, users should not tinker with anything in /Library or System/Library unless they know exactly what they are doing (or at least have a good backup to recover from the problems this can cause). Because the missing files may mean someone has done more tampering than just removing them, I suggest for your situation that you do consider an Archive & Install, followed by running Software Update to get all current updates into the system.
BTW, the earlier advice from nerowolfe was not about doing an install from the DVD. As he explained, after you boot from the DVD & choose your language, immediately go to the Utilities menu at the top of the screen & choose "Disk Utility" from its menu choices. The installer application will be replaced with Disk Utility, which allows you to run its checks & repairs prior to or instead of installing the OS.
I am suggesting here that you do go ahead with the install because of the potential problems with the existing one, but for other times you should know about the utilities you can run from the DVD without doing an install.

  • Why is firefox continuously connecting while on a web page? The wheel is spinning every 10 seconds or so. I reinstalled firefox so I need help.

Firefox is continuously "connecting" while I am on the web. It does not matter what site I am on but it keeps connecting (wheel spinning) every 10 seconds or so. Like it is reloading the page. The page does not go away, but it is driving me crazy as it did not used to do this. I did download a free trial of WordPerfect, but it was not what I was looking for and deleted it. I also reinstalled Firefox, so I am not sure what is going on. Help Please! I have a Windows 7 Sony Vaio computer. I ran the virus check a couple of times and it came up okay.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
