Macbook keeps freezing after updating software

Recently I took my Macbook in for repair and got a brand new hard drive. I was looking forward to having an actual working laptop and started to copy my files over. After installing all the programs and updating the OS, the macbook suddenly gives me a black screen and tells me to restart. I restart the laptop and it freezes at the white screen with the logo on it. I figured i would reformat it and try it again. Same problem happened.
Ever since I've gotten my laptop back, I have reformated it about 5 times. This is not normal for ANY laptop and other windows laptops don't have this problem at all. I'm very disappointed in Apple and don't really feel like going back to the Apple store for another hard drive. Does anyone have the same problem or is it just me?
I'm using the 13' Aluminum Macbook, 2.0 ghz, 4 gig ram, 160 GB 5400 Sata Hard drive, Model Identifier Macbook5, 1

Did you try simply running disk repair from the startup DVD?
It may also be that there is hardware besides your HDD that is causing the kernel panic. Next time you start up, hold down the "d" key and see what it tells you.
Some people recommend a program called Rember to test RAM specifically. You can download it from versiontracker here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/52452
Two HDDs in a row should not fail. If it has to go back to Apple again, demand that they call it a lemon and that they give you a completely new machine.

  • Applications keep freezing after updates are installed...

My MacBook (Santa Rosa model) cannot seem to run any applications with out having them freeze every few clicks. It happened after updating from 10.5 to 10.5.6, with quite a few other updates installed at the same time as well. This happens to pretty much every application I run. What should I do?

Try downloading the Mac OS X 10.5.6 combo updater and install it.

  • Macbook Boot Freeze after update 10.6.8

I have a macbook pro A1226 Late 2007 running OSX 10.6.4 it runs this just fine however when i update to 10.6.8 or install lion it will not boot up. Just a grey screen spinwheel then freeze with different colors. It works fine when i plug in external monitor. I just dont understand how it works perfectly fine on 10.6.4 but will not update. Any thoughts?

    Try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Now use Software Update to get all other updates for Snow Leopard.

  • Itunes keeps freezing after update....

    Hi,
I have had my Itunes library on a external drive through my airport extreme for some time now and have had no problems. When I updated my OS to Leopard and Itunes10 I started having problems with Itunes freezing. I realized I needed to mount my drive before opening Itunes and this seemed to work. But after the most recent update Itunes has started freezing again or just taking a really long time to load and when I access my library through my 2nd gen Apple tv it now locks up Itunes. If my Itunes is frozen I can turn off my airport and it unfreezes but I have to reconnect with my library and it just freezes up again. Can anyone help Ive tried everything it seems.....

    Hi...
Has an answer been posted to this? I have exactly the same issues; and it is driving me absolutely insane! It keeps on freezing/unfreezing and has become incredibly slow!!! It takes me up to an hour to add 4 tracks to the library...
I upgraded my entire IT to Mac because of the iTunes integrations, but now I am starting to regret it!

  • Macbook keeps crashing after update to Yosemite

    Hi,
My mid 2010 Macbook Pro crashed about 8 times today after I installed Yosemite.
By crash I mean that it simply shuts down, restarts, shows the Grey "Your computer restarted because of a problem" screen, then immediately restarts again. In most cases I did not even get to see the crash report, the one that came up is attached below.
The fan is going all the time too, at a fairly high rate which it has never done before.  The Activity monitor shows that the process "launchd" is continiously at 70% CPU usage, which might be normal or not - I don't know...
I removed most of my startup items but still no luck.
I would be very grateful for any ideas!
    Thanks!
    Valentin

This is happening to us too.  I've upgraded 2 MBPs, an iMac, and our Mac Mini and it's happening frequently on the Mac Mini.  The problem is that there's seemingly no recipe for reproducing this.  It'll happen 4 times over 4 days and then nothing for a week.  I've tested the RAM with Rember and the modules are fine.
I have all energy saver features disabled so I'm not sure that this is the issue.
My family is out of town next week so I may just do a fresh install on the mini and see where that gets me.  We just use it as our media server so there's not a ton of software to reinstall.

    wwifi keeps freezing after update.

    Hey F.hodgkiss,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines the basic troubleshooting steps for Wi-Fi connectivity. I have also included the steps related to the symptoms you may be experiencing:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap  and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Unable to access the Internet while connected to Wi-Fi
If you're using a public or commercial network, you may need to log in or subscribe.
Check to see if you have a self-assigned IP address:
    Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected and tap ( i ) .
If your IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx, you may not be able to access the Internet.
If you do not have a self-assigned IP address, see if other Wi-Fi devices on your network have Internet access.
If they do not, consult with your network administrator or ISP for further assistance.
If they do, reset network settings on your device by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • HT1338 my macbook keeps freezing

my macbook keeps freezing how do i fix this problem?

Boot from your installer dvd, recovery partition, or external bootable drive and run Disk Utility to repar/verify your drives (not repair permissions).
Do a smc and pram reset.
Boot in safe mode then reboot.
See if your machine still freezes after those operations are preformed.  If so run Apple Hardware Test to check your machine.
If AHT findes nothing then your software additions will need to be investigated.  But worry about that later.
