Macbook keeps shutting down on it's own
my macbook pro shut down on it's own yesterday and to turn it back on i had to press and hold on the on button for at least a few minutes. it keeps happening about every 15 minutes and then it stopped.
Reset your SMC which can sometimes fix unexpected shutdowns.

Why does my 15' macbook keep shutting down?
I never had this problem till recently. My macbook keeps shutting down around the 60% mark on the battery indicator.
I have requested for the new battery, as my battery is eligible. I'm hoping this will fix the problem.
Also, the light on the mag-safe power cord does not stay on. If I unplug it and then plug it back in then the light will pop on.
Has anyone encountered this?
Could it be the 10.4.8 update?Try resetting the PMU (Power Management Utility)
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
Hope this works

My iPhone 4s keeps randomly shutting down. It usually does this after it's been sitting in sleep mode for a few minutes. Pressing the home button or attempting a hard reset does not turn the phone back on. It seems to turn on on it's own. It has done this since I got it and seems to be doing it more frequently. I've only had the phone for about 2 months.

My MacBook keeps shutting down, then restarting, endlessly
Hello,
Posting from my phone. :(
Have reviewed all related questions but nothing sends to help this situation.
For no apparent reason, my Mac shuts down and attempts to restart. This happens whether any programs are running or not, and regardless of whether I am even touching the computer. It has happened when I have been working, or in the other room. When it attempts to restart and fails, I have to hold down the power button, wait, then turn it ok again. The restarts were only every few days but frequency had increased now to every few minutes!
What can I do, and what could be the problem? I am out of warranty.
Context is relevant: two months ago my old battery died, and the fan was ticking loudly and always on. Brought her to the Apple geniuses at the local store. They were to take my laptop for an hour to replace the fan and battery. When I came back in an hour, my hard drive, which I had installed myself a year ago but had had no problems till then, had inexplicably failed. They could not restart. I went home to pick up my backup drive. They restored my computer there in the store, and put in a new hard drive, gratis, along with the new fan, which I paid for. Something about their anxious behavior and how long all this took suggested something else went wrong, but I could not ascertain what, exactly.
When I got home, everything seemed ok till my computer randomly shut down and restarted twice. This picked up in frequency over the past two months, and you know the rest of the story, except this:
When I opened up my Mac, under the battery, my warranty sticker had been partially peeled off presumably by a Genius, and was sticking up. This was a month ago. Yesterday I took out the hard drive and held a flashlight to the inside. There were little bits of glue-balls rolling around, which I picked out, and a random orange wire sticking up. One of the little rubber tracks that support the drive is missing, but this has been the case for a year, with no problem. The glue-balls and the wire, however, were new additions.
I am a student trying to graduate, pending on whether I can finish typing my final papers....
HELP?!
Thank you!Try Apple Hardware Test - you need your original system installation DVD. Insert the DVD, and reboot while holding the D key.
If it is randomly rebooting due to a hardware fault, AHT might not even run. With all the detritus inside your MacBook that you describe, anything is possible.

My MacBook keeps shutting down
I bought my MacBook in August so it is very new. Recently it has started to shut down after about 5-10 minutes of use. I read on the main page about an update but it is for older operating systems and tells me that my computer doesn't need the update. The problem, however, did start occurring since I moved to Poland from North America. I'm not sure why that would be a problem but I don't know much about computers. I am a graduate student and can't have my computer shutting down whenever it feels like it. Which is why I bought a Mac in the first place. If someone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it!
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Check if your machine qualifies for this:

If not, check my article on heat:

Otherwise call AppleCare. You have free AppleCare for the first 90 days, and a chance to extend your coverage to 3 years from date of computer's purchase by buying AppleCare within the first year. -
Macbook keeps shutting down randomly
I've had my Macbook for about 9 months with no problems but it has suddenly started to shut down randomly. I have looked at lots of support advice on this site but nothing has worked. I have the latest firmware and battery update patches. Following advice on this forum, I thought it was down to recently installed widgets that might me using too much CPU so I binned them to no avail. It also isn't the temperature, when it last died that was at 49c, so well below danger level! From what I can ascertain, it isn't kernal panic either, and no panic logs have been stored. I haven't had any error messages. I have looked at the console and system logs, but they don't mean much to me.
Here's what happens:
Completely randomly, regardless of what applications I have open or with no external decives attached, my mac switches off, or almost. The start up "ching" sounds, then the screen flickers on and off while the light at the front does the same, it also makes the start-up sound a few times as if it's trying to restart. It doesn't close down completely but won't come back up again. When it first started doing this, I could force it to shut down then reboot it, but just now the only way I could get it to do this was to remove all power: take out the battery and remove the power-in cable then replace the cable and reboot. It still does this with the battery removed completely, so it's not the battery causing this. I've also tried holding down the on/off button until it makes that long tone sound just to see if it would start up before removing all power, but it didn't!
Help! I've tried everything I can think of and the apple store is closed in the UK!Ummm, nope. All due respects, this problem cropped up suddenly, at about the same time, for multiple users, on different laptop types. Probability of all this happening at once due to simultaneous hardware failures is much lower than if it was caused by say a software update not playing well with something (a piece of 3rd party software, etc). I'm having the same exact problem, I have put a new battery in, same thing happens.
This is similar to 3 or so years ago when widgets were first introduced, laptop battey lifes dropped to about 1/3 and the machines heated up. General consensus was it must be hardware, well no it was software, and a software fix took care of it. I'm hoping someone figures this out soon...
Thanks -
My MacBook Keeps shutting down without warning
Every since downloading Mavericks I have been having problems with my MacBook Pro. The worst thing is that the computer randomly shuts down without warning. Today this has happended about a dozen or more times. Every time it generates a report that is sent to Apple. I have coppied the first few lines of the report and I have pasted it below, I can post up the full report if need be: if anyone can help that would be great!

thanks very much for the help; the problem only started after I upgraded to Mavericks and started immediately after that. I have seen that there are other problems with my GPU particularly the icons on my desktop decaying. My computer is a mid 2010 CPU, it backs up automatically to our AirPort
In any case here is the full error message:

Macbook keeps shutting down after replacing the screen!
Hi,
The screen of my four year old Macbook cracked the other day and, after being quoted around £500 from Apple to replace it, I decided it was pointless seeing as though the machine cost £700 nearly four years ago.
A friend of mine ordered a screen and replaced it for me. I've just turned it on for the first time an hour ago and the screen and everything else works, but for whatever reason the machine just turns itself every now and then. Does anyone have any idea why?
I assume it must have something to do with how much of the processor is being used because I have done a little testing and have found that, when the machine is hard at work, it switches off after about ten minutes, while after 45 minutes of being idle, the thing has stayed on when I haven't touched it (typing this from a different machine).
So I'm just wondering if anyone can help me diagnose the problem, and better still, help me resolve the issue. I know taking the Mac to the Apple store would have been the safest solution but surely you can understand my unwillingness to do so considering the machine is worth less than the price to fix it.
Many, many thanks in advance for any help.
Additional info:
The Apple logo at the back of the screen is very dim compared to normal.Have you tried a different charger?
Hardware fault, very likely logic board.
Make a service call to Apple for diagnostic / repair at your local Apple store. -

Can someone tell me what's going on?Hey Kaylyn07,
Thanks for the question. The following article may help in troubleshooting Kernal Panic’s for OS X:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4636
In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with the Mac itself. They are usually caused by software that was installed, or a problem with connected hardware.
To help avoid kernel panics, install all available software updates until Software Update reports, "Your software is up to date." OS X updates help your Mac handle the kinds of issues that can cause kernel panics, such as malformed network packets, or third party software issues. For most kernel panics, updating your software is all you have to do.
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you need help with this process, consider bringing your Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
Thanks,
Matt M. -
My MacBook keeps shutting down on it's own without any notice and it can't be open unless I unplug it if it shuted down plug and vice-versa
I changed my batterie about 1 year and a half ago, what would be the cause of this problem ? And do you have any advice because it's not on the warranty anymore and I dont want to bring it in and pay a fortune.
Thank you for your helpI fear I know that the problem is, but you might want to visit your local Apple Store/Genius Bar for a second opinion. Apple's extended warranty program for this model has ended, but there's a chance that a good-hearted person at the Genius Bar will respect your situation.
I urge you to leave a message on this thread with the results. -
MacBook Retina shuts down after a few seconds after every boot
Hi there
My retina macbook keeps shutting down after booting and rebooting by its own a minute later. No error message is displayed or anything like it, it just magically shuts down.
It had been working fine until now but it seems to be going crazy for whatever reason...
When it shuts down by itself, I can't turn it on myself. It does it on its own even if the lid is closed and then shuts down again after about 30 seconds.
This only happens when it's connected to a power source (it doesn't even start when it's not).
I have tried to reset the PRAM without success.
The only time the issue doesn't happen is when I do a Safe Boot.
Can anybody tell me what is up with my Macbook (I really need it for work AND school).
ThanksHave you done a SMC reset?

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?
Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first. -

My new MacBook Air keeps shutting down the screen while I use it
My new MacBook Air keeps shutting down the screen while I use it and has to be rebooted. I took it in to the Genius desk at my local store, but they couldn't find anything wrong and said that they have never seen this problem before.
I Spoke to the IT support guy at work. He has the same problem with his new MacBook, but not with his older one. He suggested that it is a software issue with all new MacBooks and is connected to the timing of it going into sleep mode. Does anybody have a solution? Apple doesn't seem to have one.Try a SMC reset.
