Macbook keeps shutting down randomly
I've had my Macbook for about 9 months with no problems but it has suddenly started to shut down randomly. I have looked at lots of support advice on this site but nothing has worked. I have the latest firmware and battery update patches. Following advice on this forum, I thought it was down to recently installed widgets that might me using too much CPU so I binned them to no avail. It also isn't the temperature, when it last died that was at 49c, so well below danger level! From what I can ascertain, it isn't kernal panic either, and no panic logs have been stored. I haven't had any error messages. I have looked at the console and system logs, but they don't mean much to me.
Here's what happens:
Completely randomly, regardless of what applications I have open or with no external decives attached, my mac switches off, or almost. The start up "ching" sounds, then the screen flickers on and off while the light at the front does the same, it also makes the start-up sound a few times as if it's trying to restart. It doesn't close down completely but won't come back up again. When it first started doing this, I could force it to shut down then reboot it, but just now the only way I could get it to do this was to remove all power: take out the battery and remove the power-in cable then replace the cable and reboot. It still does this with the battery removed completely, so it's not the battery causing this. I've also tried holding down the on/off button until it makes that long tone sound just to see if it would start up before removing all power, but it didn't!
Help! I've tried everything I can think of and the apple store is closed in the UK!
Ummm, nope. All due respects, this problem cropped up suddenly, at about the same time, for multiple users, on different laptop types. Probability of all this happening at once due to simultaneous hardware failures is much lower than if it was caused by say a software update not playing well with something (a piece of 3rd party software, etc). I'm having the same exact problem, I have put a new battery in, same thing happens.
This is similar to 3 or so years ago when widgets were first introduced, laptop battey lifes dropped to about 1/3 and the machines heated up. General consensus was it must be hardware, well no it was software, and a software fix took care of it. I'm hoping someone figures this out soon...
Thanks

Can someone tell me what's going on?Hey Kaylyn07,
Thanks for the question. The following article may help in troubleshooting Kernal Panic’s for OS X:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4636
In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with the Mac itself. They are usually caused by software that was installed, or a problem with connected hardware.
To help avoid kernel panics, install all available software updates until Software Update reports, "Your software is up to date." OS X updates help your Mac handle the kinds of issues that can cause kernel panics, such as malformed network packets, or third party software issues. For most kernel panics, updating your software is all you have to do.
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you need help with this process, consider bringing your Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
Thanks,
Matt M. -
Internet keeps shutting down randomly
Just got my Mac Mini and love it so far, but my internet keeps shutting down randomly and restarting itself. Is there a lack of memory being used for it and is there a way to change it? If so, how much should I allow it to use?
I'm on a LAN line, no router, the School is the ISP... Haven't had this problem on my PC. I did it about 2 times in a row, but hasn't done it since.

Why does my 15' macbook keep shutting down?
I never had this problem till recently. My macbook keeps shutting down around the 60% mark on the battery indicator.
I have requested for the new battery, as my battery is eligible. I'm hoping this will fix the problem.
Also, the light on the mag-safe power cord does not stay on. If I unplug it and then plug it back in then the light will pop on.
Has anyone encountered this?
Could it be the 10.4.8 update?Try resetting the PMU (Power Management Utility)
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
Hope this works

You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years. You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired. -

your EtreCheck report will not reveal why your MacBook Pro shuts down randomly. What this report does reveal is that you have out-of-date versions of Java and Silverlight installed. The latest version of Java (7, Update 55) can be downloaded from here, and the latest version of Silverlight (5.1.30317.0) can be downloaded from here.
Without knowing some example situations in which your MacBook Pro randomly shuts down, it will be difficult to diagnose the problem. Would you provide some examples during which it has shut down? That is, which programs are running when it happens? How long has it been booted up when it happens? &c.
In the interim, after updating Java and Silverlight, you can try running your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test, to see if it can detect any hardware problems. -

Macbook Pro shutting down randomly but very frequently
Hi guys,
I am having an issue with my unibody macbook pro. Its the 15" 4gb ram, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo version.
Basically the macbook just shuts down sometimes...like I'll be doing something and it just TURNS OFF!
I have reset the SMC controller, my batt is fine- I just dont understand what is happening?
As I typed this, it happened, but in a slightly different way...the screen goes grey and you get the typical "you need to restart your computer bu holding the power button" etc
The error I got from just now is:

I cannot really afford to take my computer to apple atm as I rely on the macbook for work and I have some real important stuff to be getting on with and cannot be without it right now.
Please can someone help me so I can sort out this really annoying mess!!!
Many thanks guysWelcome to Apple Discussions
Did you upgrade the RAM yourself or is this as you bought it ?
The kernel panics seem to be caused by any issue with the CPU's so this might not be user-fixable and you may need to call AppleCare and have this fixed under warranty (if it is stock/Apple RAM)
+panic(cpu 0 caller 0x28d59c): "pmapflushtlbs() timeout: " "cpu(s) failing to respond to ilterrupts, pmap=0x84b6e0 cpustorespond=0x2"@/SourceCabhe/xnu/xnu-1504.7.4/osfmk/i386/pmap.c:3548+
All I can suggest is that you try the following and see if it helps (it can't hurt)
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
fsck -fy
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - run the command again and keep doing so (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
reboot -
MacBook Pro shutting down randomly/violently
I have had several issues with my MacBook Pro in the last year or so. At completely random times when I'm using it, it will shut down in one of about four ways. The screen will either change to just one color (has been pink, yellow, green, orange, blue, black, etc), the whole screen will be filled with small horizontal lines of varying bright colors, a box will come down telling me that my computer needs to restart, and to hold the power button if it does not automatically, or it will turn an off-white color and have what looks like code along one side. It usually comes up with a report after it restarts. I've taken it to the Genius Bar several times, but it never crashes while it is there, so no one can help.
Any idea what this could be? It usually doesn't happen very often, once or twice a week, but lately it has been getting worse.I'm getting the exact same problem here. "kdenby" got it pinpoint correct. Those are the 4 ways in which my macbook pro has been shutting down randomly every single day. It passed the point of tolerance many months ago.
I've had my macbook pro 13'' for 2.5 years and this started happening about 6 months ago. Not very often at first, but now it occurs every half hour. On certain occasions, the computer shuts down right after arriving at the log in screen.
This is becoming rather vexing, as I cannot do anything productive on my laptop. Please take a look at this issue. -
Macbook keeps shutting down on it's own
my macbook pro shut down on it's own yesterday and to turn it back on i had to press and hold on the on button for at least a few minutes. it keeps happening about every 15 minutes and then it stopped.
Reset your SMC which can sometimes fix unexpected shutdowns.

com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform 1.8You have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.

What you can do to use it is download gfxcardstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.
You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar. Take along a printout of your panic. -
Macbook Pro keeps shutting down randomly
Hello-
My 15" Macbook Pro (Late 2011) has started unexpectedly and randomly shutting down. I recently installed Mountain Lion and it started after that, and only seems to happen when running on battery power. I've tried an SMC reset multiple times and that doesn't seem to help. I'm running a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM, updated to 10.8.2.
Based on my battery report, I don't think that's the issue:

My MacBook keeps shutting down, then restarting, endlessly
Hello,
Posting from my phone. :(
Have reviewed all related questions but nothing sends to help this situation.
For no apparent reason, my Mac shuts down and attempts to restart. This happens whether any programs are running or not, and regardless of whether I am even touching the computer. It has happened when I have been working, or in the other room. When it attempts to restart and fails, I have to hold down the power button, wait, then turn it ok again. The restarts were only every few days but frequency had increased now to every few minutes!
What can I do, and what could be the problem? I am out of warranty.
Context is relevant: two months ago my old battery died, and the fan was ticking loudly and always on. Brought her to the Apple geniuses at the local store. They were to take my laptop for an hour to replace the fan and battery. When I came back in an hour, my hard drive, which I had installed myself a year ago but had had no problems till then, had inexplicably failed. They could not restart. I went home to pick up my backup drive. They restored my computer there in the store, and put in a new hard drive, gratis, along with the new fan, which I paid for. Something about their anxious behavior and how long all this took suggested something else went wrong, but I could not ascertain what, exactly.
When I got home, everything seemed ok till my computer randomly shut down and restarted twice. This picked up in frequency over the past two months, and you know the rest of the story, except this:
When I opened up my Mac, under the battery, my warranty sticker had been partially peeled off presumably by a Genius, and was sticking up. This was a month ago. Yesterday I took out the hard drive and held a flashlight to the inside. There were little bits of glue-balls rolling around, which I picked out, and a random orange wire sticking up. One of the little rubber tracks that support the drive is missing, but this has been the case for a year, with no problem. The glue-balls and the wire, however, were new additions.
I am a student trying to graduate, pending on whether I can finish typing my final papers....
HELP?!
Thank you!Try Apple Hardware Test - you need your original system installation DVD. Insert the DVD, and reboot while holding the D key.
If it is randomly rebooting due to a hardware fault, AHT might not even run. With all the detritus inside your MacBook that you describe, anything is possible.
Using Apple Hardware Test -
Macbook pro shuts down randomly (sometimes it beeps)
My computer has been having issues randomly freezing and then shutting down. Sometimes it beeps 3 times and then repeats those beeps until I force it to shut down. I took it to an apple authorized dealer and they found that my hardrive was failing, but not any other problems. After I got it back I download the OS X mavericks upgrade (This computer is an early 2011, 15" macbook pro, unibody).
From searching it seems from the beeping that it is a RAM issue. I have tried reseating the RAM and using only one card at a time. After a few days it continues to its hold habits.
It works best when it is on a solid table top and it is not moving. When I move it, sometimes with even the most gentle touch, it continues these issues.
I ran an apple hardware test and it did not detect any issues, however the problem still prosits.Hey! I tried re-installing the OS but it didn't fix it. I called Apple Support and they sent me an OS update and that didn't work either. I went to a friend who knows a lot about computers, and he suggested that it could be a problem with the RAM memory. He downloaded memtest for me (http://www.memtest.org/), ran it and indeed, the test caught some problems with at least one of the memories. I then took it to the Genius Bar in the Apple Store to get it fixed. They had to take it away, though, because they need to run some more thorough tests to see what exactly is wrong with it, since changing the memory might not solve the problem. I'm waiting for them to return my computer, so until then I won't be able to tell you if this worked. It seems too much of a coincidence that this happened right after I upgraded to Mountain Lion (especially if other people are also having this issue after an upgrade...). Good luck!
