Macbook Keyboard DEAD (not using Leopard)

Several weeks ago my keyboard and trackpad stopped responding on my macbook (which is now out of warranty) but the power button still works. I bought a new topcase and installed it thinking this would fix the problem, it didn't. So last night I backed up all my files and reinstalled Leopard hoping that a fresh install would bring the keyboard back to life, this also did not work. Also noteworthy, I only erased and reinstalled the partition on my hdd for leopard and left windows on its little 10GB sector.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok I tried this but it is actually for Leopard. As the post states that is not my case. I tried to use it anyways and it told me it can not open because I am not running 10.5
Ive come to the conclusion that my logic board may be the problem. The keyboard and trackpad are both not recognized by the system profiler.
The only thing listed under my USB bus is Bluetooth.
I ran the Hardware Check and it found no problems. As a reminder I purchased another top case. (keyboard and trackpad) and nothing was resolved.
Can anyone back me up on the guess that the logic board is toast?

  • Ipad keyboard disabled, not using bluetooth. How do I turn keyboard back on??

Trying to input some data for a ipad based POS and I somehow disabled the keyboard on the ipad and cannot figure out how to re-enable it. Does anyone know how to disable/ enable the keyboard for ipad 4??

Thanks so much for your response! I should have worded my question better though I meant to say, I am not using a bluetooth keyboard, I did, however set up a bluetooth printer to the ipad and since then, the keyboard does not appear on screen.. Does it confuse this bluetooth connection and assume it is a keyboard? How do i get the onscreen keyboard back? Thanks again!

  • Transferring iMac 27" to my Macbook Pro and not using Migration Assistant?

    Hello,
I have my new iMac all set up and used Migration Assistant from my old iMac but created a new user account when I first set up my iMac and chose the do not migrate option. I didn't have the right Firewire cord so had to use Migration Assistant to transfer over after I was all set up with internet.
My new iMac is all up and running and I'd like to now migrate all my files to my Macbook Pro without doing it wirelessly (as it took over 24 hours to do last time). I'd like to transfer over files using my external hard drive.
elmac gave me some information in regards to another question which I edited here:
Hi, I use both TM & SuperDuper (2 different EHD's) I copy from SuperDuper (updated daily)(My Home Folder) iTunes you can enable sharing between computers and transfer that way..Photos from iPhoto Library..dragNdrop I use my Network, not as fast as FW..but easier on the mind. When I unpack my mac, I just set up with my email & Apple passwords..After that I repair Permissions then go about transferring.
Can I just transfer my home folder called Tuley from the main hard drive on my iMac to the user account section on my new Macbook Pro? Then I can transfer over the itunes folder etc.? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

Creating an account in System Preferences isn't the same as just putting a home folder into /Users/. The account needs to be created first.
Then I can transfer over the itunes folder etc.?
    Yes.

  • Standard Macbook Keyboard Shortcuts Not Functioning

    I have a Macbook running 10.5.7.
For some time, I have been unable to use any standard keyboard shortcuts such as CMD-N to open a new finder window etc.
I have re-installed the MAC OS X software from clean, reset the defaults for keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences but nothing works. I don't believe it's the keyboard as I have tried holding the option key while booting and do get the screen offering which drive to boot from.
Every now and then, following a "Restore Defaults" in keyboard shortcuts, they will function but following a re-start, they are no-go again.
This applies to all shortcuts such as CMD-SHIFT-4 to grab a screen shot. Simply no keyboard shortcuts work at all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Darryn

I don't have an answer, but I just experienced the same problem. Suddenly my copy/paste shortcut doesn't work. I hope someone provides an answer soon!

  • Thermal Problem - MacBook keyboard is not working properly

I have a strange problem which I have never seen beeing reported before. While working with battery power everything works normal. When loading the battery or under heavy processor load the Macbook heats up and the keyboard has the following problem: the number keys 1 to 9 (and only them) do not work any more. If the Macbook cools down, the number keys start to work again.
What can be the problem ?

Sounds like you may have a circuit laminate problem with the keyboard. You need to contact apple to get help for this problem.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro dead not turning on, how do I get all my files off it?

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 15" MacBook Pro. Basically it's completely died on me, a few things have been going wrong so I know it's times up. I just want to know how I can get all my photos, documents & files off if it's completely died & won't turn on? Are all my files ect on the hard drive or on amother part of the computer. Any help would be really appreciated as I have a lot of photos of my 2 young children on there which will break my heart to lose.
Thank you in advance for any help
    Shelley

Remove the drive from the Mac and place it in an external drive case. You may be able to access the files.
buy yourself an external drive and start backing up, this need not have been a problem.
there is a recall in place on your Mac, for graphics problems, take it to an Apple Store, if yours qualifies there is a free repair available

  • Remote IP address invalid - not using Leopard, still on Tiger

I am looking for help! I see many solutions for people having this problem who are on Leopard, but my work MAC is still running Tiger and I am now getting this error when someone tries to video chat with me. When I try and video chat with buddies, the error I get back is "Erica (workMAC) did not respond" (Note: Erica (work MAC) is my user name...). I did not have trouble with this previously. The only thing that has changed since the last time I video-chatted is that the static IP address our internet provider assigned to us has been changed, due to recent upgrades to the service in my area. I suspect this is a culprit, but cannot find out how to fix the problem. Suggestions?

The Error 4 refers normally to one end being on Leopard and the problem being at then end.
It is normally seen by the end without the problem.
I have not seen it Tiger to Tiger chats.
As you are on Tiger that does not preclude the others from being on Leopard.
However I would still be interested in the new Internet Service.
I have heard of situations during upgrades where in (Downstream) and out (upstream) data is actually over two routes to maintain speeds.
Effectively the ISP routes you through two IPs in fairly simple terms
This may have something to do with what is going on here.

  • Keyboard backlight not working Leopard 10.5.8

    Heyy guys
I was given this PowerBook G4 17 Inch to restore I got all the PowerBook G4 installation disc's (Include Tiger and iLife). Works well then I brought leopard and done a clean install and combo updated to 10.5.8 and now the keyboard doesnt light up anymore?? is this a bug? I cant find any keyboard firmware updates or anything...
    Thanks for you help

Well this is actully really weird because I did a fresh install of Leopard 10.5.1 did a combo update to 10.5.7 and the keyboard worked! Then when you leave it in a high "light" condition area the keyboard turns off, and when you try and adjust the brightness it says it cant recognise the keyboard illumination feature. Then you close the lid and leave it for an hour, come back and the keyboard works again, THIS IS REALLY WEIRD LOL

  • MacBook keyboard is not working properly, highlights randomly

Over 2 years ago my MacBook was fixed for liquid damage, hot tea was spilled on it while it was closed.  Just recently it started acting up, highlights randomly, cursor jumps around while I am typing, thus deleting what I have typed and etc.  Please, is there any remedy I can do myself, at home?

Your alt (aka opt or ⌥) key is stuck down. This seems to be quite common these days.
Try teasing it up with the corners of two credit cards or similar flexible, non-conducting tools.
If that doesn't work, the wafer switch underneath may be damaged, in which case it'll need to go in for service.

  • Keyboard on 2006 macbook keyboard is not working properly. I'm just getting weird symbols when I type yet an external keyboard works fine. Is there something I can reset or replace? Please help!!

Is there a way to run a diagnostic at startup?

  • Leave macbook on or turn it off when not using it?

any one please can you tell me is it better to leave my macbook on when not using it as I heard that it does some important updates at night time? or is it better to just turn it off and then reboot it when next going to use it. I use it pretty much every day and leave it on charge which is also my second question would it be better to leave my mac on charge but I have noticed the power adapter which is not on the extention cable but just on the small plug from the socket to the power cable

As to your second question, leave it plugged in most of the time if you can. Use it off AC power occasionally and calibrate once a month or so.

  • Why won't my Macbook keyboard work?

My Macbook keyboard is not working. It was fine earlier but upon using it again later I realized that all the letter keys did not work. Whats more is when I try to type with a letter key the mouse cursor vanishes and the trackpad registers single clicks as doubles. I can use a USB keyboard fine and typing with reverses the aforementioned trackpad error (though it returnsw as soon as I type with the built in keyboard again).
    Any ideas?

Further, do you know for sure that your MacBook Air model supports keyboard lighting?  Not all of the models support this.
Which model do you have?  (Go to About This Mac (under the Apple logo in the menu bar), click "More Info" toward the bottom, and tell us what the top 2 or 3 lines say in the resulting display.

  • USB keyboard suddenly not working

My A1243 keyboard has suddenly stopped working at all. It also doesn't work when I tried it on another mac. However, the mouse that I attach through the USB port on keyboard still works through the keyboard.
Is this a settings issue? Do they have batteries? Has it just died?

It's possible it gave up the ghost, most USB keyboards do not use batteries like BT devices.
    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for your machine for a battery you should not remove yourself, or a battery you can remove.
Also try with a different USB keyboard, that will give you a pretty good idea.

  • Problems about trackpad+keyboard when using Leopard on Macbook Pro

I'm using Macbook Pro Multitouch 2.4 and I have two problems while using this laptop. have anyone same problem with me?
1- about trackpad: I 'm not usually using tapping trackpad, but when I try to use tapping trackpad for a while, trackpad cannot tap. So I must change to click trackpad. When I logging out or restarting, the trackpad can tap again.

I'm using Leopard v1.5.3 although 1.5.2 also have the same situations.
