MacBook keys NOT working.

New Macbook, bought in May of this year. Lately the keyboard has not been displaying the p, 0, ? and enter key. The MacBook is still under AppleCare, but I am curious if I can fix this at home instead of driving to NH. I live in Maine. The only issue I could think of is the fact that I work in the woods. My MacBook has been left in a case in an office for weeks to cold and hot weather. Would this remove key functionality? Thanks

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound (bong) for four times.
6. Release the keys.

MacBook Keys not working even after KeyBoard Firmware update

My friend's sister bought me a MacBook from the US last October. Fortunately, Apple announced the release of Leopard also on the same month and I got a free upgrade to leopard. I installed leopard about 3 months back. My keyboard was working fine when I had Tiger installed. After I installed Leopard, I remember installing a Keyboard firmware update once through the Software Update.
About two three weeks back, my MacBook started acting wierd. Some keys were not working (mostly 't', 'q', left shift, left command, zero which is not working even now. I couldn't close the last bracket because the key is not working. I am a php programmer and I can't think of living without the closing bracket and zero keys . But most of the keys works on and off.
After seeing on several sites that it is a problem with firmware, I once again downloaded the firware update, but couldn't install it since the installation wizard says that my system doesn't need it.
Can someone plz tell me what to do now? Will reinstalling help?

The problem persists everytime I restart my system or wake it up from sleep. But each time different keys have problem. I am now downloading update 10.5.4. Can someone plz help me?

Macbook Key not working

The "[" key of my Macbook stopped working somehow. It works 1 in 100 times so it is not completely off but It doesn't respond at all normally. I am not sure if this is a software problem or hardware one. Is there some way to check my keys. It is beginning of the new term at school and I just got something else repaired in my macbook a month ago. They keep it for weeks without giving any backup. I am so upset with my decision to buy Macbook. So many problems all the time.

That is perfectly normal. Serial numbers are platform specific. You need to upgrade to CS6 and make the switch.

im on 10.5 on my macbook black and this just started last week where the computer would start up an i would be typing then like 3 minutes later i would press the keys and there would be NO response!!!! The mouse is just fine i can quit programs via the menubar. I consider myself a techie and know my lingos and what not but i still havent figured this out. It only started after i upgraded to 10.5 i havent had this macbook for less than a year can anybody PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!???

Give it a try and search on "Leopard keyboard". Brings up a lot of other folks having keyboard issues. Given the number of hits, I think there is a software component to most of the difficulties. It may be related to the waking from sleep.
In preparation for the replacement computer Apple is sending me, I did clean install of Leopard on an external hard drive 2 days ago. I did transfer all settings from my DOA MPP to the external firewire installation of Leopard. I have booted from that external firewire drive for at least 48 hours, installed the remainder of my software AND have had no more significant keyboard freezes. I should have had a number based on past experience. There have been a several "pauses" when I thought all was lost but quickly I had keyboard response again without any extra ordinary efforts like plugging in an external USB keyboard or rebooting. My Powerbook G4 has had no keyboard issues. My MacBook 1.83 GHz has had no keyboard issues. I have never had trackpad issues period.
I wish we knew a way to separate out the hardware vs the software issues we all are experiencing. I am more inclined to conclude that my difficulties are software related & not hardware. If you read through the posts, a number of people have the issue disappear if they do and archive reinstall.
But for me the problem solving stops on this computer since a replacement arrives tomorrow. I will problem solve MBP 2.4 GHz from there.

Command, option, ctrl, fn keys not working

thanks to a visiting dog who got tangled up the power adapter my laptop ended up on the floor, wide open with the keyboard popped out. I have inspected the connector cable and it looks OK to the naked eye. I disconnected the keyboard cable and re-connected.
When using an external USB keyboard all keys function normally. When using the built-in keyboard the only keys not working are the command, option, ctrl and fn keys. I have restored modifier keys to default (I had never changed them) but this did not help. I also toggled the "use F1-F12 to control..." option in the keyboard preferences to no avail and have restored keyboard shortcuts to no avail.
Is my keyboard shot? Is the a pref file I might delete?

Hi, Mel. If the external keyboard works properly, I'm afraid you have to figure your built-in KB has been dogged to death. I hope the pet owner will do the right thing by you. I also hope the KB is all that was damaged. How are your adapter cord, plug, and DC-In port? Does your battery still charge OK?
Whenever anything visits my house that's active, inattentive, and built low to the ground, my Powerbook runs on battery power only. I haven't seen one yet, but the new magnetically-connected, easily- and harmlessly-detached MacBook Pro AC adapters sound like a superb idea to me. Too bad our PBs can't use 'em.

Return & shift keys not working

My keyboard is unresponsive. problms started w/ "L" and "9" and "Enter/Return" keys. Did a s/w update and reboot but still no success. Now only "Shift" and "Enter/Return" keys are unresponsive.

I tried the troubleshooting steps listed in the article linked above but ran into the following problems:
a) the View menu doesn't have a "Speech" item listed (I'm running 10.9.2)
b) My MacBook Air doesn't have a disk drive; impossible to start up from an Install disk as recommended in step 10.
None of the other steps helped (sticky keys off, slow keys off, mouse keys off, etc)
Looking at the forums, looks like several other people have the issue of just the right-side shift and return keys not working, like me. Could we please have some advice that is specific to that particular issue?
In the meantime I'm using only the left-side shift and have downloaded and installed KeyRemap4MacBook and remapped my backslash key so it issues the "return" command. A clunky work around but it seems to do the trick, at least.

This is more than 'Shift key not working.' You have a serious problem. Follow this:

And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons and not a glassful that there is a difference.
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.

By the way, if you are still interested, I found a solution. It's a bit crazy, but basically I have insulated the parts of the keyboard connector corresponding to the power button using some thin tape and then used a very thin wire going from the logicboard (where the test pads for startup are located) to my eject key, this way the original power button does not respond anymore and the eject key can be used as the power button, just like in the new Airs
I can provide photos if you want.

Volume and brightness keys not working with new keyboard on imac

I just purchased a new wired keyboard for imac and brightness and volume control keys not working . i have tried adjusting keyboard settings. I have software version 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade software. Thank you for any help.

Do you have "Automatically Adjust Brightness" check box ticked in System Preferences > Displays > Display ? If so, you can't manually adjust brightness.

Each version of Extension Manager only installs/manages extensions for the same suite of products. EM CS6 only installs extensions for DW CS6. To install extensions for DW CS5, you should launch EM CS5 to install it. Note that you have to update EM CS5 to 5.0.3 before you launch EM CS5 in Mac 10.8, otherwise EM CS5 will crash due to Mac API change. You can use Adobe Application Manager to update EM CS5 or download and run http://download.macromedia.com/pub/dw_exchange/extension_manager/mac/AdobeExtensionManager _5_0_3_mul_AdobeUpdate.dmg which can be found at http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/.

Some keybaord keys not working after suspect virus on Tecra A

Apostrophe, delete, semicolon and end keys not working after a suspected virus attack. I found record of the same problem on the net but apparently this guy fixed his problem after he found scroll lock or num lock on.
This is not the case here but there is something going on with numlock - register shows 2 and not 0. change to 0 but when reboot back to 2 again.
Suspect changed back by bios. I thought i couldnt get to bios because DEL key not working but found ESC works.
Tried to reset default values for bios but then cannot save and exit as this required the END key to work.
I was running XP at the time of the (suspected) attack and could not rectify the problem so put the computer back to the OEM status which i hoped would help - it did not, same problem so rather than install all the software on the computer again with XP i upgraded to Windows7 - fresh install.
Still keys do not work - it was a real pain to start with as my computer was set up to ctl+alt+del to log in and i had to do this with on screen keyboard - XP - this also showed that numlock was on before and after windows boot.
The reason i suspect a virus - my wife was watching one of her tv shows on line from home country (another toshiba laptop) and i needed to use that laptop for something else so i asked her to use mine - later on we turned the laptops off and in the morning turned tham back on again, the other laptop with AVG virus protection flagged several hits and this one with (FAMOUS and completely up to date) Norton flagged nothing - once i got into it using on screen keyboard.
Problems with this computer was found after scanning with a different antivirus.
Anyway - i am left with 4 keys that do not work on my keyboard (actually they did work after i logged into the computer for the first time but i had to hold them in for a long time - and then next time i rebooted, not work at all and havent ever since)
Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated, i have been working on this all weekend with no joy at all.

I have essentially done both - tried Toshiba OEM status found on a small partition of the toshi hard drive - no good - then did a fresh install of Windows 7 - still no good
You know - as cunning as it sounds - i cannot reload the default settings in BIOS as it requires the END key to work so i can Save & Exit - all i can do is Exit Without Save - i sort of feel snookered at the moment.
Toshiba got back to me today and said that i have tried everything they would have (yeah for sure) and to take my machine into a service centre for a hardware check - yeah right on boys!

Hi there, I was hoping that you might be able to help me with the problem that I seem to be having with my Toshiba Satellite Laptop Keyboard too. For a few days now I havent been able to use a few of the keys on my keyboard, including (1) delete (the backspace key is still working though), (2) colon/semicolon, (3) apostrophe/quotation marks and (4) end (the home and PgUp and PgDn keys are still working though). Any suggestions?
Identical to my problem....obviously this guy had the same problem as well...see below - same thread.

However, i was not able to solve my problem the way this guy did - my scroll lock is not activated - it seems to work ok (on and off) i tested it using Excel to move around the cells.

Nevermind. For me it was scroll lock. My apostrophe, semicolon, and delete keys are alive and working again. I hope you have the same easy fix.
Incidently - never hear from the first guy again - probably ended up being his scroll lock.
