MacBook & LaCie D2 Quadra Firewire Problems

Hi,
I have a LaCie D2 Quadra External Hard drive with Firewire and USB 2 ports, formated as Mac Journalised. This is the Problem I have since this afternoon (Before, everything was fine):
When I connect the Hard drive using FireWire to the Macbook, the Disc Images doesn't appear on the Desktop, but the Hard drive makes the familiar noise that it's connecting, so I don't think the FireWire port is damaged.
When I connect the USB port, the Disc Image appears on the Desktop, so the Disc Drive isn't damaged.
So, what could be the problem?

It works again!
I took it over to my friend's house and hooked it up to her macbook to see if it would work, and it did fine, so I knew it wasn't the hard drive.
Then when I got home I tried it again, just to see if anything had changed, and it worked fine!
I'm guessing there was just a little glitch that got reset when I connected it to a different system.
I don't know if it will work for you guys, but it's simple enough that it's worth a try.
Good Luck!

  • Install SL on LaCie d2 Quadra firewire?

Before beginning a relationship with SL on our MacBook Pro, I was wondering if I can install it onto a new/blank external LaCie Firewire to be sure our printer and the apps we always use will continue to work OK (before going ahead and installing it directly onto the MBP)
I've read here folks saying that some external drives aren't recognized by SL - but what if the external had SL installed on it? Could I use the option key and choose to boot to the external?
And if this idea would work, could I partition the external before doing this so I can use the rest of the external for storage of photos or music or whatever...
    Mrs H

Thanks, donv (The Ghost) this is wonderful news. I was hoping the answer would be yes it will work!
    One (or 2) further questions.
I do use SuperDuper! Smart Updates to do my backups and I love it.
...you can clone the volume on your external drive to your internal--much easier and much less risky than reinstalling...
So, after I've partitioned the new HD and installed and tested out SL from the external with my most used apps, I could move SL over to the MBP HD using SuperDuper!? But, I won't want to copy the volume containing SL over what's on the MBP, wouldn't it erase everything currently on the MBP.
**There's probably a setting to do this sort of cloning, I just don't know where to find it...can you help with this, please?
**Now I have my MBP backup on another LaCie that I partitioned in Apple Partition Map format (I believe that's the correct term) For installing the OS onto the external I've read that I must make a GUID partition. Can one HD be partitioned with both a GUID partition for SL install and Apple Partition map for the remaining partitions?
Thanks again for your speedy reply and help.

  • Lacie 4big Quadra upgrade

I have a Lacie 4big Quadra 12TB external drive connected to a Macpro server as a backup drive connected via FW800 but I'm out of space.
Lacie now do the same drive but with a 16TB capacity but rather than buy a complete new unit I was wondering if anyone had replaced the drives in one of these units for larger drives, either Lacie drives or for instance 4TB seagate drives.
Ideally I would like the 20TB thunderbolt version but as I cant get a thunderbolt card for the MacPro that's out of the question.
Another option is a different manufacturer  but the drive needs 16TB minimum, raid 5, be swappable & connect via either USB 2 or Firewire 800 but not a NAS.
    Thanks

Why aren't you looking into SATA PCIe? Forget using USB2 definitely not and not for RAID5.
Maybe look to Mavericks which has improved its software RAID support (though it is nine-dot-zero so maybe not today).

  • Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if I upgrade to Lion and then restore from the external drive?

I ordered the disk to update to Snow Leopard.  Did that so I could get the App Store.  Did that so I could download Lion.   After I installed Lion my MacBook is super sluggish.  Takes like 6 seconds just to open a drop-down menu in Finder.
I have been backing up. Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if wipe my drive using the USB Lion OS stick (which I think I'll have to buy even though I downloaded the new OS online)?  I have been plugging my laptop into the Lacie drive set on "auto" and it's been working great.
One Genius said yes "you will get everything back" but my Mac buddy says "say goodbye to most of your apps".  Then a guy at the university I asked "do you have a disk image". And I said "what the **** is a disk image?".
Is the problem that I installed an OS on top of new OS without wiping the drive?  Or, is my MacBook Pro too old? Do I need to buy a new one?

    Any help?

SA will indeed transfer accounts, files and apps at first start. Can do so even faster if you clone the internal HDD onto the external (just split into a partition large enough to contain it) and then use it as the source. Probably faster than Time Machine too. The safest and quickest way to do a disk image or clone is using CarbonCopyCloner (free), and it will preserve the Lion Recovery Partition too.
Since you'll have to re--download the Lion installer again, note that you can concoct your very own Lion Installer USB Stick with it prior to reinstalling and not have to pay for the Apple-branded version. See Kappy's tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3786371?tstart=0
As for the sluggishness, I believe that a great part of the cause is that you only have 2GB RAM. Don't know if your Mac can take more but try at least to get to 4GB, if not 8GB. Should attempt this before  messing with the reinstall, as this may get you what you want.

  • MacBookPro Firewire Problem...(Lacie Quadra d2 & Canon ZC70mc)

    I have a MacBookPro(2.4Ghz, 2GB ram) running Mac OS X 10.5.2.
    I also have a 500Gb LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drive (Model301110U)
which is plugged in via my firewire 800 port(power adapter is
also plugged into my Quadra). This is listed in my System
    Profiler as "d2 Quadra (button)".
I have not had ANY problems using my Quadra drive until now.
Once I plug in my Canon ZR70mc minidv camcorder into my MacBookPro
(via the firewire 400 port) the Quadra disapears from the System
Profiler and I get "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices" in
the FireWire device tree. Neither the Quadra nor the Canon are
accesible or listed in the System Profiler.
If I disconnect the Canon, the Quadra reappears and works normally.
If I disconnect the Quadra and connect the Canon, the Canon works normally.
Any ideas? Please advise. I've also submitted this question to the
    Lacie Support folks.

Just bought a new Lacie D2 Quadra 750GB. Connecting to the computer(s) via FW800 with a DV camera connecting to FW400, which i'm trying to capture through FCP.
LAcie mounts and works fine , but spontaneously unmounts itself with the comment "Device removal". Disconnecting the video camera is the only way for the drive to appear on the desk top again.
I've tried different cables/ports with no success. I'm relunctant to tak eth edrive back to the shop as it works fine in everything else (without the camera connection) on both computers. Is there an Apple problem here?

  • Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feed

Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feedback. I had a powermac before this with the speakers and it worked fine. But the mac pro is having these issues. Is it the firewire port or the speakers or (and most likely) just a firmware glitch with mac pro? Anyone else see these issues?

    http://web.mac.com/jerimydulay/Site/MyAlbums/Pages/Lacie_FirewireMIDI.html
Here is my audio settings. For some reason I wish I could remember what I did. It was actually the Apple Store tech in the Unversity Village in Seattle that gave me the idea and I swear I had to change the settings in MIDI setup. Now that Leopard is out it seems the MIDI stuff has been redone. I included screenshots of my MIDI setup as it is currently to see if you see something different on your computers. Let me know!

  • MacBook Pro with LaCie 2big Quadra

Just brought a 2tb LaCie 2big Quadra external raid drive to add to my macbook pro, the thought was to add a bigger drive capacity to my SSD (128GB) my thought were to move the home file from the macbook to the drive one, so my pictures, music and documents where all saved there, then via raid have all that data mirrored to drive 2, am I thinking about this in the right way

The only disadvantage that comes to mind that you may miss is a 'historical record' that Time Machine would provide.  If you were to trash something and found you needed it, your stuck.  Your backup would always reflect your current data.  If you can live with that, fine.  Perhaps some one else will come up some other issues.
    Ciao.

  • Finder no longer detects a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive

I have a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive that is connected with firewire 400 to my Macbook Pro. It will not show in Finder or the desktop.
It constantly in running because I can hear the clicking sound coming from it and it runs all the time. I cannot see it on my Mac.

Yes, you have to format it with Disk utility - that is what it is for. So it seems you did that correctly - check back to make sure that it is the GUID partition scheme.
Do you have any LaCie software installed? Your drive needs nothing on it to work. First, try to just restart your computer - that may work (after ejecting and unplugging the drive). If it doesn't, plug it back in and you might want to try to run through it again (use partition this time > one or more partitions).

  • Iomega Prestige or LaCie d2 Quadra 1TB external hard drive?

Good day. I am in need of more storage and am debating the Iomega Prestige or LaCie d2 Quadra 1 TB HD. I plan on using the HD to store my iTunes music files, DV camcorder tape files and overall time machine back-ups. I am leaning toward the Iomega with a USB port since it is priced under $100; however, the LaCie has firewire connectivity. Will I see that much more speed or improvement by utilizing the firewire and going with the LaCie? Is it worth an extra $50-$60?

It depends on how much $$$ you are willing to spend and if you already have a wireless router. Replacing an internal drive, unless you are able to do it yourself, will require paying a technician for installation. If you already have a WiFi setup, you probably don't need the router functions of a Time Capsule.
One option to consider is buying the largest capacity external HD you can afford. You can then create two partitions on it: one for Time Machine and one for everything else (a rule of thumb for Time Machine is to give it at least 1.5x to 2x the space used by the drive it is backing up). Or you could pick up two external drives--depending on the size you buy, the cost probably would be less than a new internal + Time Capsule setup)--and use one exclusively for Time Machine.

  • Camcorder Firewire problem

Help! New iMac 24", 2.8. Firewire 800 has two drives attached, daisy-chained to another -- one is for video capturing / scratch disk, other is for time machine drive. The Firewire 400 port is used for my Canon camcorder. My plan seemed to me a good one. However, when I first connected my camcorder, my time machine drive seemed to unexpectedly "eject" itself, and a warning message appeared basically saying I did not eject it properly. Furthermore, and most disturbing, is that iMovie 08 gave me a "communication error" message and I could not import video no matter what I did. It did detect my camcorder and did seem to communicate enough to make the camcorder play video on its own lcd, but no video actually transferred to the Mac. I tried iMovie 06 and with some luck it seemed to work. That firewire port (400) has worked recently with a different hard drive. Interestingly, when I disconnected both of my 800 drives, the import actually worked in iMovie 08! Yet I need one of those drives as my scratch disk! When I reconnected my scratch disk, the import screen told me my camcorder was disconnected or off! What gives! Help! If it makes a difference, my time machine drive is actually a 400 speed drive daisy-chained to the back of an 800 drive which in turn is connected to my 800 port. Thanks in advance. Frustrated to say the least.

Trouble is in the air Stevo and I can't help you. There is something critically wrong with the firewire system in our new computers! They apparently can read to/from most hard drives, but are leaving many pro and semi-pro users high and dry when it comes to supporting video cameras! I have a two-week old 20" iMac , a brand new Lacie Pro 1TB external triple interface and two Canon XL video cameras. With the Lacie connected via Firewire 800 and a camera connected via Firewire 400, we get a "VTR OK" prompt in FCP for a few seconds, then it switches to 'no communication'. The computer simply isn't seeing the camera properly because of a weak/faulty/cheap firewire system. We've tried to capture directly to our main hard drive without the Lacie connected, and every other permutation we can think of, with no success.
iMovie and FCE will not see our cameras either (or our Panasonic camcorder) so I'm completely stranded with a brand new computer and external hard drive. New firewire cables were also tried, to no avail. Maybe Apple would suggest I buy new $6000 video cameras at random until I find one that hopefully works?
As a home-based videographer, I am now shopping for an entirely new editing system that will NOT include Apple products at ALL. What a shame - I have completed hundreds of video projects using a G4 iMac laptop over the past three years without problems. Keeping Apple in my business venture has now cost me dearly - a $2000 computer that is completely useless and a growing list of clients that aren't receiving my video work. Apple would rather let its customers search for their own answers through vast forums than provide reliable computer technology or meaningful customer support. My affiliation with Apple computers should have stopped when my G4 finally died a peaceful death.

  • Firewire problems in OS 10.4

I read the threads on this topic.
    People say there's a problem.
But, no one has an answer.
I have tried in vain to get the Target Disk Icon to appear on a second Mac over Firewire. But, No Luck.
    I have a half dozen G4 Mac's (DA's, QS's, MDD's) and 3 or 4 lengths of firewire and I've tried everything. But it's not happening.
    What's the problem?
Also, I would really like to know how to get rid of that Setup Assistant, Registration screen thing. All that stuff every time I put a fresh copy of the OS on a new hard drive.
    Thanks,
    Shamus

I too am having trouble getting my imac (10.4.11) to read the firewire when the firewire is connected to my brand new macbook pro. Now, I can connect my external hard drive to my old imac with the firewire, no problem. All I want to do is migrate my files from my old mac to my new macbook pro...it really shouldn't be that difficult. I just spent $25 on a firewire at Microcenter - the sales guy assured me it was the correct type - and low and behold nada. Is this a function of the firewire "400" on the imac to firewire "800" port on the macbook pro? The firewire fits in both ports just fine, but I have pressed the "T" key on the old mac computer and nothing happens.
Note, that I started to do a wireless migration, which would have taken 6+ hours and ultimately timed out after 3 hours...should I give that another go? Thank you. (For the premium price we mac users pay, really this should be much easier.)

  • External HD (Lacie d2 Quadra 500GB) random disconnects

    Hi!
I have a problem with my external HD (Lacie d2 Quadra 500GB). The problem occurs since the 10.6 upgrade. My external HD is disconnected every few minutes. Sometimes I only see one partition, but most of the time both partitions (one of them is my Time Machine partition) are being disconnected by OSX. I read that some Western Digital drives get disconnected, too. But as far as I know my drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 HD.
    Any solutions?
I can plug it out of the USB2 port and back in again. It will appear for a few minutes and after that the next "Drive disconnected" message comes up (sometimes the message does not show, too!).
    I would appreciate any help!
    Thank you,
    Markus

I have the same problem with an external SimpleTech portable HD direct-wired via USB. My drive is strictly used to hold music and photo files. The problem has started since upgrade to Snow Leopard.
It disconnects every few minutes and has to be unplugged and plugged back in again to my MBP to get it to reconnect. Sometimes the "Drive disconnected" error message comes up, sometimes it doesn't. When I plug it back in sometimes it doesn't get recognized and I have to repeat the procedure. The time it takes to become recognized, when it is, is much slower than before upgrading to Snow Leopard.

  • Firewire problem since upgraded to 10.4.3

    Hi there,
since I have upgraded my iMac G5 to 10.4.3, it is no longer recognising my external Lacie firewire drives. These work fine as I have tried them on a machine running 10.4.1, and they worked fine on the iMac G5 before I upgraded to 10.4.3
The iMac powers the devices but they do not mount or show up in disk utility or apple system profiler...
    any ideas?

    Robert,
Take a look at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=260074
Also, which update method did you use when you went to 10.4.3? Did you use Software Update or did you download the update from Apple's website? Some users have reported a resolution of Firewire problems by downloading and installing the 10.4.3 Combo Updater from Apple. You can do this even thought you are already at 10.4.3.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

  • My incredible story with a Raid LaCie Biggest Quadra Fw 800.

I bought a Raid LaCie Biggest Quadra Fw 800 in June 2007 at Ktuin store(the biggest retailer of Mac and LaCie in Spain) in Madrid Calle Orense for 1079,00€. As soon as I took it out from the box and I connetted it to my Powerbook G4 and my MacPro the drive burn them out. Some smoke came out from the firewire socket. Three months later LaCie gave me a new Raid LaCie Biggets Quadra Fw 800.They didn’t pay anything for the damage caused to my 2 computers. Luckily the Macpro was still in warranty. Mac fixed it for free but still I had to pay 700€ to fix the Powerbook.
Well, I put the brand new Raid LaCie Biggest Quadra Fw800 on my desk and I saved there all my last 5 years of work as a photographer. I didn’t make any back up because:
    1) I’m a stupid guy
    2) I had confidence on raid system (they make back up their own)
    3) Never I would have thought that a second Raid LaCie Biggest Quadra Fw800 will broke
Exactly 9 months later the Raid LaCie Biggest Quadra Fw800 stopped working. The message of the computer was that it just can’t recognize the device.
At Ktuin store in Madrid the kept the Raid LaCie Biggest Quadra Fw800 for 45 days passing programs to rebuild the volume lost. Also the LaCie sent a new box to put the 4 disks but…. nothing, it keeps not working. They told me that if I wanted to recover my datas I needed to bring it to a recovery lab but I would have lost my warranty on them. I had to choose datas or drives.
Now I’m waiting news from my recovery lab praying that they will be able to recover my photos. The estimate is from a minimum of 1300€ (one disk broken) to a maximum of 7200€ (4 disks broken) (Mixed of 2 estimates from Recovery Labs Madrid and Serman Madrid 12/08/08).
    So
    1) I lost a client who had bought a report and I couldn’t deliver him the photos
    2) I have client waiting for his photos since 45 days
    3) I have agencies waiting for my photos
    4) I payed 700€ to fix my powerbook
    5) I will have to pay between 1300 and 7200€ to recover datas
    6) I won’t have the right to take advantage of the warranty and will have to buy new drives which sure won’t be LaCie
    Thank you very much LaCie

    Ps
Today september 2nd, 2008 Recovery Labs Madrid confirmed what Serman Madrid had already said: my raid has been formatted at 35%. This occurred when the raid was in possession of Ktuin store in Madrid. The Recovery Labs Madrid technician said that this probably happened when they decided to change the box. The drives finding a new environment have started formatting automatically. The Ktuin technicians were working being coordinated by LaCie technicians.

There are numerous threads here about losing data and the best way to backup. It is commonly held that the best advice is to back up your data three times. This is mostly for a desktop setup but the principle remains the same.
1 - To another hard drive in your machine.
2 - To an external drive that is solely turned on and used for backing up all data.
3 - burning all data to DVD that is then stored offsite or to another hard drive that is also stored offsite.
This is to ensure that should your house burn down or someone rob you and steal everything at least all your data is safe.
There are of course other ways to backup one or more of these steps such as backing up over ethernet to an external server etc and what method like TM or Dantz Retrospect configured to your taste.
Some, also suggest burning all your data to disc every five years or so, as that seems to be the accepted lifespan of CDs and DVDs.
You have to ask yourself " Can I afford to lose my data ?"

  • Experience with Iomega 250GB Ext Drive & Lacie PCMCIA to Firewire 800?

    Hi!
I bought an Iomega 250GB Ext. Hard Drive and I'm contemplating buying a Lacie PCMCIA to Firewire 800 PC card for my PowerBook G4 (the G4 is older and does not have built in Firewire 800 capability.) Has anyone had experience with this configuration? I'd like to know if there have been any problems trying to go with this configuration before I buy the Lacie card. If there are problems with this set-up then my best choice it appears would be to use the Firewire 400 port on the laptop and on the ext. drive. (There is also USB 1.1/2.0 capability.) Anyone with experience in this area please advise.
    Thank you!
    tenntooter

    Hi t,
I haven't had experience with this setup, but ran across this test sometime ago. They tested the LaCie card you're looking at with a Ti 800MHz with no issues.
(There is also USB 1.1/2.0 capability.)
Take my word for it, you don't want to use USB1 (major slow) and to use USB2, you'd need to buy a PCMCIA card to USB2 adapter anyway. Even then, in real-world transfers, FW400 is faster than USB2, so if your FW port is working, there's no reason to go the USB2 route.
